The Force Awakens - Official Thread (HERE BE SPOILERS)

I think this will be a thoughtful movie that may inspire the younger viewers to actually ask themselves the existential question the movie raises; "who am I?"

I hope so.  B)

Agreed.  I'm hoping it's like the reboot that he did for Star Trek.  That was a great job in getting back to the storytelling that Trek was so good at while opening up the Trek universe to be different in subsequent movies.

Hopefully, The Force Awakens will be similar, since it can virtually go anywhere from the end of the original 6 movies.  With a new movie expected almost annually, I'm hopeful that there will be good stories told.

There are a LOT of good story lines for Star Wars from the books, but the Cinematic Universe will go its own way.

This is Star Wars week, and the commercials and hype is everywhere.  What do you think, will this be the greatest opening box office ever

To answer your question, Dave, I think it almost has to be the biggest opener ever. Look at the number of pre sale tickets already. Plus most theaters will be showing it in half of their screens. The numbers are going to be staggering.

I heard this morning that it'll take a global box office of over $1.5B for this one to turn a profit after all the marketing. Thats an incredible number considering only 5 movies have made that much...ever.

I think Mark used to post about a guy that was a major influence on George Lucas, trying to remember who that was it will come to me in a minute.

Watched Temple of Doom last night, saw all of the Star Wars homages and hidden tributes, are at least the one's I remember.

I have not seen that movie in over a decade but I still say, "Oky Doky Mr. Jones..." at random times.

I was browsing the ESPN site and for the game it was showing it listed the "Star Wars Starting Lineup."  Later ESPN showed some kind of Japanese sword fighting competition, "the history of the light sabre battles" hosted by Mark Hamill.

A person doesn't have a choice but to be involved with this thing.

I thought all the previous ads said TFA was due to be released Dec 18th?  How come it's all over the place on the 17th?

My local theaters all have evening times for the 17th.  I am NOT going to go and fight the crowds on the first day.  I think I'm going to go for a morning show on Friday.

Attn Mustang Guy:  Can you recommend a local theater with good sound?  I'm not feeling any love for the mediocre sound at our local Regal Grand Central Mall (Regal Cinemas).

We have one theater that just has the SW TFA logo, then a second theater with Real D (3-D).  Is that Real D any good?

Your six La Scala setup at the Speaker Ranch has me spoiled as it blows away any and all of our local theater sound systems.

There is a whole set of books in what is called the Star Wars EXPANDED universe, but GL has made it clear that ONLY the movies are canon, so the movies will be consistent with themselves and are independent of story lines from the books, comics, cartoons and games.  I think the books could

There is an interesting series that focuses on families, Leia and Han marry and have several kids which includes a son who goes to the dark side and daughter who becomes a powerful Jedi.  Luke marries a dark side assassin called the Emperor's Hand, turns her to the light and has a son named Ben who becomes a Jedi.  The story lines are cool but have nothing to do with the movie.  The kid's names in the books are not the same as any of the characters in the upcoming movie.

/spoilers

With all this dark side stuff going on, shouldn't this be included?

I don't want to be an adult anymore, looking for a family to take me in as a 6 year old girl

Just sayin'

Considering the EU, The animated The Clones Wars is canon, or so I thought.

Two generations want in on this. Before we had multiplex theaters, you typically only had one or two places in town where you could see a movie. I saw the original three at the magnificent Dabel Theater in Dayton, which had a gigantic curved screen and seated about a gazillion people. We waited in line for over two hours to get seated - the line went around the block.

The opening sequence took my breath away, along with everyone else in the place - it was palatable. No one had ever seen anything like that before, it made you feel small. Seeing it on a big screen at home is not the same. No way, not even within a light year - I'm doing imax all the way on this one.

My kids enjoyed the original three on laser disc. Very cool reliving it with them, but the prequels were awful, and left most kids feeling a little deflated.

Some of you are jaded, and frankly, it's kind of sad. When I saw the extended trailer, I got a little choked up. Yes, it's ridiculous, but having that powerful imprint brought to the surface kind of jolted me.

As soon as they gave this to Abrams, I knew it was going to be amazing, and the kids who got shit on by Lucas with the prequels will finally experience something they won't soon forget.

"Who are you?" is the question the the millennials must answer for themselves, possibly for the first time in their lives. It's a question not asked these days, but is being resurrected in The Force Awakens, a question for a new generation. It is truly a movie for a new generation.

So all these kids are gonna go to find out who they are? You are way overthinking this. I'll bet 99% of the kids are going to see the weird space aliens, cool special effects, and an interesting melodramatic plot.
