Best live concert performances

Because of the recent thread on "What are we missing" - and the

indication that Klipsch speakers are best for live music and the

counter-argument that "live" performance doesn't necessarily equal a

"good" cd, or a better recording from the studio original.

What I would like is some forum feedback on good live recordings - now

I dont mean good live performances, spectacles or the like - you know

fantastic light shows that end up being crappy albums - but good

recordings that are equal to or better than the original studio

recordings...

I will start -

Sinatra - Live at the Sands w/Count Basie: I think this is

probably one of the best Sinatra albums I have ever heard, though

recorded late fifties, early sixties, it is lush and dynamic with a lot

of variations - has great sound in my opinion, Sinatra at his best, and

the interaction with the audience is classic, apart from the mildly

racist commentary and the soliloquy about Dean Martin being the captain

of the US drinking team.

Peter Gabriel - Secret World Live: Fantastic live recording of

Gabriel classics, excellent sound quality of the recording IMO, there

is crowd noise ocassionally, but the mix seems to be spot on, has a lot

of depth caused by the huge venues it was made in - but doesn't reverb

you out of the room, or make the singers sound like they are in a

tunnel. I highly recommend it.

U2 - Under a Blood Red Sky - Not the greatest sound production values,

but the album gets across the angsty simplicity of the band in the

early 80's, and why they were (are?) the most popular band in the

world. I like this album alot, but it is pretty noisy, and is

meant to be that way, I think.

Anyone else want to throw some in here?

K

Not sure if it "best" by any standards..... That said, from my youth... when music really mattered!!! hahahaha

Frampton Comes Alive! - Peter Frampton

songs like this available now as extended versions...

"I want you.... to show me the way....."

"Do you feel like we do" (yes with the vocoder....just ROCKS!!)

Outside this summer crank those up and ENJOY!!!!!

Of course, any number of southern rock groups as well as Yes, Zeppelin, Styx, REO Speedwagon, Queen, Kiss, Moody Blues, Doobie Brothers, Foghat, BTO, oh man, I could go on and on forever with one hit wonders... I enjoy them all.

That's the DVD...Moon.. Was already out on VHS......

I can't wait to see it on DVD too. I LOVE this CD very very much. For me, to hear the audience sing along with Gilmore is chilling over the top cool if your a fan. I made it my number one CD I enjoyed in 2005 to re visit..

Eagles: HFO and FWT1

U2: Rattle and Hum

and if you can find it

Sting:Bring on the Night is one of my all time favorites

and if you want a lot of energy it is an oldie but a goodie

Cheap Trick: Live at Budokan, it may not be the best recording but it still makes the hair on my neck stand up after nearly 30 years.

I strongly second Pulse! The VHS version had "One of these Days" on it and they simply blew it away.

I had the fortune of seeing this show in Nashville and as far as a concert might go, I'd say this was a life altering event. We were speechless about it for several months. held in Vanderbilt's football stadium, HUGE speaker array up front with more on sides and more behind. We were on the turf and could feel the heat from the explosions from the pyrotechnics. All during the show, I'd noticed a tractor trailer with SOMETHING about it... turned out, it held the "disco ball" and came up from the ground instead of perhaps coming down like I think it did in the vhs. Comfortably Numb was surreal.

When the chopper flew overhead & they had the double spotlight... it really gave you a feeling of what they might have felt like in Vietnam with a cacophony of sound around you and a chopper flying overhead... was really a stupendous show & I'm looking forward to the dvd also. I just hope they have ALL the music on it and don't cut some out (like they did on the cd's by cutting out one of these days)

I know you are looking for recordings so my answer doesn't qualify but I'll stick it in here anyways.

Best live concert I ever experienced was Bob Marley and hey, I was at

Woodstock, not to mention umpteen other great concerts, so I know from

live.

Not the same but try "Babylon by Bus" by of course, his jah-ness, Bob Marley.

Ya mon.

Just this last Wednesday I was in the front row at a Wilco show in Charleston SC. Other than being a little scared that Jeff Tweedy was going to yell at me, I swear it didn't sound any different than when I play their recent live album Kicking Television on the Khorns. It's a hell of a live album but the Khorns really bring the concert home!
