  3. Several years ago, I had the opportunity to hear Jeff Hoak's LaScalas and they were beautiful sounding speakers. I had the chance to pick up a pair recently and had TOTALLY forgot how large they were. LOL. These have an absolutely beautiful finish. Other than a few small nicks near the bottom of the cabinets, they are in amazing condition for a 34 year old speaker. Everything looks original and they have AA Crossovers. Serial Numbers are Sequential. Based on the serial number, they are Vintage 1980. There weren't any stickers on the back so I'm not sure of the style these (not even sure what different variety LaScalas came in. I have no idea what finish these are in or if they were stained at one time. Feel free to help educate me on these because I know little to nothing about them. I've been listening to a variety of source material. Youtube and streaming and Airplay from my cell phone sound like garbage on them. Haha. I think it's because they are just very revealing? Once I hooked up Dave Matthews, Eagles and a few other concert DVD's, they sounded very nice. I've always heard guys speak of how the 3-way heritage speakers have better midrange. I've owned Forte II and Chorus II and I thought those were "heritage" but later found out they weren't part of the heritage series. I never felt they blew away my RF-83's in the midrange department. The LaScalas definitely have a better midrange though. That midrange horn is HUGE! The throat on the horn is 2ft deep. It's very smooth and vocals sound amazingly natural. Bass from the LaScalas in my HT is extremely weak. I even turned the crossover for my mains to Full and they were still weak. I've always heard guys say that about the LaScalas and there are a few that "claim" the LaScalas have plenty of bass. Sorry, that's just not the case in my room. Over the next week, I want to move them into my living room (wife has to leave for a few hours to do that). I want to see how bass sounds with hardwood floor and how they sound in a very open floorplan layout. No worries as long as you have a capable sub. My RSW-15 provided plenty of low end to allow the LaScalas to really shine. Movies sounded amazingly clear and precise. Very detailed. My next step is to do some A/B comparison between the LaScalas and the RF-83's to see how they directly compare to each other. Because the LaScalas do not have banana plugs, I have a set of speaker cables hooked up to the RF-83's and a second set hooked up to the LaScalas and will have to change the cables on the back of the amp. It should be another fun comparison. Here are some pics I took of them tonight.

  8. That's your place ? If so it's cool looking, I like the style kind of Acadian and the yard fits perfectly. We just went through that, everything blooming and sadly most of the azaleas have lost there flowers, but the Japanese Maples are filling out well, my all time favorite plant.

  9. LaScalas and a sub and you will want to kick those skinny supermodel looking things to the curb. Just kidding, kind of, now consider this, they sound amazing outside as in playing to a crowd of a say like, I don't know youth pastors kids or something.

  10. Thanks guys. Too bad my room wasn't just a few feet wider as the LaScalas prevent me from opening the bottom left and bottom right cabinet doors. They are pretty massive speakers and take up a lot of real estate. It's funny how when I first started the in the forums, how I would often say that to my eyes, that I did not care for the design of the "older" klipsch speakers because they look so "dated" and that I prefer the much more modern look of the Reference Series. While this is still somewhat true, my opinion has begun to change the closer I get to 40. LOL. I'm beginning to appreciate all Klipsch speakers, both current models as well as older generations.

  13. It really is nice, I love areas like that, large pine trees and plenty of azaleas mixed in and plenty of privacy, looks like Gerbing azaleas. It's strange how azaleas work there not like many plants, if you trim them much later than about 30 days after the last flower falls off they won't bloom the next year, even with all the growth the rest of the year internally they set the buds for the next spring very early. That's why when people trim them a lot to keep them a certain shape they bloom only on the un cut wood and it looks very different from any others in the yard. Good eye dtel. They are GG Gerbing azaleas. Good info about pruning as well. Luckily I was the first house in this area. Now monster houses dwarf mine like the 6000 sq. ft. house next door with the18 year old hottie. Dam you Tarheel, just had to go talkin about view again........

  14. That's not a bad gig. Well the wife and I both know it's just a fun thing to do for a wile, I just don't have all the goodies I would kind of like to have, and with the money and the time, for now surfing sales, and road trips is pretty cool.

  18. For HT I honestly don't think that anything beats (3) LaScalas (or Belles) across the front. Seriously there can't be a better center channel (and of course front L & R) but dialogue and front stage panning is simply stunning. I truly love the sound but have to make a choice for HT and due to space constraints have RF7/RC7 across the front w/ RF7 sides and RC7 rears to replace the LS Fronts/Cornwall sides/Heresy rears. I do love them for music but it's as if they were born to be theater speakers. If I can ever get off my butt and get the Heritage stuff sold I'll be changing it up but I think I'm secretly procrastinating.....

  19. I could easily see how a pair of LaScalas up front with a Belle would be an amazing front soundstage for HT.

  24. At least one McIntosh pre-amp has a center channel output with a little center volume control on the top of the unit. So then you have to buy a third amplifier. But the theory must be like the Klipsch mixing box. You can't just get center mono by directly connecting together the pre-amp outs without ill effects. If directly connected the Left and Right stereo are connected together and the Left and Right channels are no longer isolated. But if you put in the resistors, there is enough isolation so the Left doesn't contaminate the Right and vice versa. Larry C IIRC had posted a schematic of a Scott tube receiver or integrated amp (pre-amp and power amp) which was difficult to dope out. My recall is that it had the center channel output for a third amp. It was a tube amp with output transformers and IIRC there was a scheme to drive a third, center amp bridged across the transformers, and give Left plus Right without a third amp. This is a bit difficult to explain. If we connect a speaker across the Left and Right outputs, the speakers receives a signal which is the difference between the two channels or Left minus Right. This is simply because of how a two terminal load like a speaker or resistor works. It responds to the difference in voltage at the terminals. For example, if we hook up our normal speakers to an amplifier it is responding to, for example, the Right "hot" or red and the ground or zero volts of the amplifier. So Right hot compared to zero (or minus zero) is just Right. Same with the Left. So bridging gets us Left minus Right. Unless we do something else as a work around. The workaround is to wire the output of the Left output transformer in reverse polarity. Now it is putting out minus left, just flipping over the sine wave at all frequencies. Horrors you say, now my left speaker is getting an inverted signal and is out of phase. Not to worry, we just connect the left speaker inverted with its red to the minus ground and its black to the "high" output. So, that is sort of a double inversion returning things to how it should be for the Left speaker. But now we can bridge the center channel speaker between the Right output and . . . what is negative or minus Left because the output transformer is wired, inverted. As before, the center speaker is going to respond to the difference in voltage between its terminals. But it is difference between Right and minus Left. That is to say, Right minus (minus Left). It is exactly like our early math education with numbers. We learned that A - (- is equivalent to A + B. So the center channel is now actually responding to Left plus Right. You don't have to buy a third amp. But you will have to use some sort of "pad" to adjust level. Actually the bridging typically between the 4 ohm taps while the mains are connected to the 8 ohms taps. This reduces the level of the center channel. Anyway. I believe the Scott amp did it this way. You'll also see similar schemes in the Klipsch papers. These days it is difficult to accomplish because only tube amps use output transformers. Sorry that got so long. But it does explain some historical things you see. WMcD

  28. Glad to see you have not left your original goal, because when you first got into this audio stuff it was for better sound, why stop now, sound first. I do understand in a living or more of a family room aesthetics have to be considered but in a dedicated HT room where they possibly can't even be seen, style doesn't count. Whatever you decide sounds best for you is best for you, what else matters, guest will be blown away either way ! And I would bet Mrs.Youth just wants YOU happy with whatever you do in that room.

  30. Nothing like a little pressure. Can't say I don't like to add a little also, it adds to the fun when someone hears a model for the first time. But in the end it's whatever makes Youthmans ears happy is what he should do, the model, size, shape or age should not matter (if it fits into your setup) . It's really that simple, when you turn down the lights and watch a movie or music it's all that counts, that was the original goal and it shouldn't change. imo We don't all hear or like the same thing

  31. That's true, and wakejunkie is already trying to figure out when he can come down again next. Might be a fun project together (aka me watching him solder).Man, it's getting hard replying to everyone's comments so if I miss yours, don't hesitate to bring it to my attention. Well, we are all excited for you . . . you give so much to the forum. One question. When you look inside the back into the HF section of the LS, do they look like the old oval tin-looking caps, or do they look new? (Someone may have saved you the trouble.) Even better, snap a quick pic when you can. But I know there is a lot going on for you between now and Easter morning. And . . . I love that pic of the La Scalas aside RFs in your HT pic above. Inspiring in a Klipsch sort of way.

  37. Listening to boxenkiller on youtube. Can't turn it up cause the wife is in bed. Sounds great but still no comparison in the bottem end between the Lascala and the RF-83's. I can feel the 83's in my chest, definitely not with the LaScalas

  38. I concur with your history lesson. I had the 2PH3 setup with mono LaScala center between two KCBR flanks for over 30 years, using PWK resistor box. I built mine with a potentiometer in the center only and fixed R and L resistors. I could dial down the LaScala to perfection relative to the R and L.. Wide sound stage was always possible this way no matter where I moved the system. I think the peopel that do 2-channel this way are an even smaller minority than 50 years ago. When I visited PWK, he showed me some old papers from Bell Labs outlining a complete stereo LP playback system with mike, pre-amp, cutter head, turntable, etc. (all tube of course), from back in 1926. It took quite a while for commercial adaptation. Then DVD came along with 5.1 srurround and I caught the upgrade bug after hearing K402's in 2007. Now I just do 2.1 and the vocals always sound like they are coming out of my HD TV withe the great imaging of the 402's.

  40. The Ht I was talking about was designed much like yours, you could not see any speakers, the front 3 were behind something very similar to what you have. Being hidden he used split LaScalas, you could not see anything. I am sure Indy would not mind me showing a pic of his room so here it is. not a good pic but just to give you an idea

  41. no biggie. I only moved over here to hash it out so we could avoid cluttering up the conversation with this kind of stuff. so much for that effort. btw, this is one thing I absolutely love about the Klipsch forums that gets messed up by nearly every other forum I'm involved in. They maintain a fairly hands-off approach and allow us to self police when it comes to etiquette and conflict - and for the most part it works.

  46. It really does, I sometimes miss pics because i'm trying to look like I am not just there taking pictures and blend In but many people tend to look your way or just what you said feel intimated and it ruins some pictures, not even counting the fact I don't want to be mugged ! I really want to go back to the French quarter in the evening and after dark and bring the tripod. Sometimes we get our niece or daughters and husbands to go walking just so we have a little crowd, mostly because it feels safer than just my wife an I, and more fun. We have never had a problem but we don't want to look like a big target either.

  47. Good idea, hate to buy a bottle and find you don't like it. I like it with just ice, let the ice slightly melt and your ready, I like liquors like that, you can get the real taste not being mixed with anything. well that's how I also did with Crown Royal which has now been replaced by American Honey which was introduced to me by forum member CECAA850 as a present, when he was passing through. Really good stuff and very smooth. American Honey? Wow, I am behind the times. That is how I drank my Crown. Intense flavor. I will be on lookout for the Frangelico. Thanks
