  1. Morning all. For some reason I'm craving tacos today. I have no idea why. Weather has been nice, we actually had a fire last weekend out on the patio. I like this time of year. We're anticipating the arrival of our daughter and son-in-law in a week. They're moving to within about an hour from us as opposed to being 15 hours away for the last couple years. They'll stay with us till they find a place to stay. I REALLY need to get our bathroom done as we already have one semi permanent house guest (my nephew). 2 more cars in the driveway, two more people in the house and another Rottie should round things out nicely. My wife and I love it though as we can't get enough of seeing and being around family.

  2. Good evening.......y'all Just catching up on posts....not much going on....was a good day... Yes it getting chilly here for sure and I wimped out and wore the long pants today...it was just to damn cold for shorts. Ever know some of those people that wear shorts all year? The Interstate Battery guy that comes to the shop wears shorts all year....it'll be below zero with crazy wind chill and he will have shorts on. Now he is one of those BIG boys...I think his calf's are the size of my torso..... Yesterday began the battle of the leaves......I sucked up the leaves on the deck with my Echo leaf blower/vac. The little Echo is my latest addition to combat my leaves. Ok I'll check-in........in the AM......good night all.......or y'all.... MKP :-)

  13. The misconceptions are interesting. Most people probably don't even realize they're listening to horn loaded drivers when they're at a live concert or movie theater.

  14. So I'm trying to figure out what it is about the look/sound of horns that is all but shunned in the audiophile community. I've been to multiple high end shops and most of the people there shake their head and want to run screaming from the room when I mention horns. I've heard things like they are "honky", they shout at you, shrill, etc. A lot of people won't even listen to a horn and proclaim it horrible just by sight. It's almost like saying dome tweeters are horrible because they're too round. For me, as a musician, I have found horns to be much more lifelike in their presentation. I have no bias towards any speaker, however, and I will base my opinion on what I hear. I do wonder if you did a blind test, if those that proclaim horns terrible, would change their mind.

  15. Afternoon y'all Not much going on.....nice day at the shop....got some good work....and I finally think I have fixed this Mazda 6......this thing has been driving me nuts. The used car guys sold it a few weeks ago. The girl brought it back saying the alarm would go off. Well I am not the Mazda "guru"...... but I think I got it....a bad L/R door latch.....so far sa good, has not gone off for a few hours... So I'm getting ready to crest the "1000th" post..... I'm gonna try and make it a good one....might even start a thread.....I don't know....just been thinking about it....gotta get my words of wisdom together..lol lol OK guys....have a great day..... MKP :-)

  18. You got that right. Don't confuse dinner and supper.
    4 points
  19. Correct; if using y'all while addressing one person, someone else not present if implied. For example: "What are y'all doing for dinner?" implies a wife &\or family, too. The term dinner implies something else in Southern; but that's another term for another day...

  21. From Randy Bankert Drawbacks Of Conventional Direct Radiator Loudspeaker Designs While horns offer a dramatic increase in dynamic capability, image size, and presence, with harmonic distortion less than one quarter of the value found in audiophile direct radiator systems, most direct radiators severely compress dynamic contrasts and reduce image size. In addition, many direct radiator designs suffer from dynamic compression coloration, where the highs and lows are rolled off at high SPL's, resulting in a perceived midrange boost. Many direct radiator designs are not efficient enough to be used with low-powered single-ended triodes, and even with high-wattage and high-current amplification, these loudspeakers sound polite and uninvolving compared to high efficiency loudspeakers. Single-ended tube amplifiers need not apply, for obvious reasons (low wattage). Special Qualities Of Horns What special qualities do horns have that endear them to enthusiasts besides having very high efficiencies? The horn may be viewed as an acoustic impedance transformer. When a diaphragm vibrates, pressure waves are created in front of it. This is the sound we hear. Coupling the motion of the diaphragm to the air is not an easy thing to do due to the very different densities of the vibrating diaphragm and air. This can be viewed as an impedance mismatch. We all know that sound travels better in high density materials than in low density materials, and in a speaker system, the diaphragm is the high density (high impedance) medium and air is the low density (low impedance) medium. The horn assists the solid-air impedance transformation by acting as an intermediate transition medium. In other words, it creates a higher acoustic impedance for the transducer to work into, thus allowing more power to be transferred to the air. A horn is a tube whose cross-section increases exponentially. The narrow end is called the throat and the wide end is called the mouth. The transducer is placed at the throat. When the diaphragm moves near the throat, we have a high pressure with a small amplitude in a small area. As the pressure wave moves towards the mouth, the pressure decreases and the amplitude increases. Excellent natural efficient amplification. As mentioned earlier, horns have very special properties, including lower distortion than conventional drivers, faster transient response than conventional drivers, and are easier to drive at high SPL's than conventional drivers. Lower distortion at a given SPL: For an equivalent SPL, horns require a smaller diaphragm, and since distortion is directly proportional to the size of the diaphragm, a large diaphragm electromechanical transducer (conventional driver) has to move much more than a horned diaphragm in order to create the same SPL (sound pressure level). The larger the excursion, the worse the distortion. So, for a given SPL, a horn loaded system will generate much lower distortion than an electromechanical transducer. Faster transient response: Since the diaphragm is smaller, it is lighter and thus it accelerates and decelerates faster. This, in the real world means superb, fast snappy transients. As the excursion of the diaphragm is very small as compared to an electromechanical transducer, the voice coil is much smaller and again, this translates to a lower moving mass and again, results in fast transients. Higher SPL's with a given input wattage: Small voice coils also take full advantage of the flux in the pole piece gap. This increases the efficiency of the transducer allowing the amplifier to work with greater ease. Since the amplifier has more headroom and the driver handles peaks and high outputs more efficiently, horns are able to produce much higher SPL's before they distort. Thus, in the normal operating range, horn designs are faster, more dynamic, have a better transient response, have less distortion, and are easier for an amplifier to drive than conventional driver designs. Horns Have Impact! You feel the music, you become part of the music, and the music becomes part of you. The full-range phase coherent wave front of horns produces a solid image and presentation, as opposed to the phase impaired, smeared, and diluted imaging of typical low efficiency conventional driver designs. Horns will never sound veiled or compressed. The performers will be there, in your room, performing for you in the same way and location as the original recording venue. If the performer was six feet from the microphone during the recording session, he will be six feet away from you when the performance is reproduced through your system, not fifteen feet behind the speakers. Why would one want the performers to be fifteen feet behind the speakers if that was not how the material was recorded? We want the performers to be in the same room we are in, in front of us, so that we can feel the music, front row center. Due to their inherent benefits of low distortion, high efficiency, fast and accurate transient response, and wide dynamic range, horn loudspeakers provide a pure, un-adulterated musical presentation, a more organic and natural recreation of the acoustic event. As a result, each different musical selection is portrayed with its own character and life, not that of the playback medium.

  28. Maron had a heart attack last Saturday, and then another one while he was in the hospital. They have had him in a medically induced coma for the past week. Please pray for him in his hours of darkness, that he can come back and lovingly skewer all of us once again. He is one of the last gray haired eminences with ties to all of PWK's wrecking crew of tin foil hat experimenters.

  39. I think there is something to the "how much do they cost?" High end is obscenely priced in some areas. A certain company that has basically recreated the La Scalas, audiophiles say are great, and the price is way out of the range I would consider reasonable. Do things have to reach a certain price point to be considered good? I love music and like I stated I have no bias for what speakers will sound like. However, if you come to listen to my setup or talk to me about sound, check your audiophile notions at the door. [emoji38] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  41. Y'all callin' me a liar? heh heh... then there are a lot of people to tell they are using it wrong. Funny... I asked my brother who is an English professor. He said that some people use y'all in the singular but it's not correct... used mostly by TV shows and northerners trying to prove their southern accent. He thinks 'all y'all' is relatively new... 2 or 3 decades or so. And this is from a guy who I've heard say y'all more than anyone I know. I remember hearing it and thinking that 'all y'all' was pretty redundant but maybe just for emphasis that they mean for no one to be left out such as in the phrase, "all y'all can go **** yourselves!" Just an example... not directed at anyone on this forum.

Carolina Panthers looked bad early so I switched channels only to learn they spanked my bud bluesboy's Seahawks. Next time Don. Jake slept out last night covered with a comforter. Had to recover him about 3:30am. My chocolate lab would not have tolerated a blanket. Heading up to 62 today and 70 tomorrow. Welcome back Chuck and Gary. Cheers Ladies and Gents

  48. I can only share what I enjoy & what I experience. Same as anyone else here. Never thought passion & enthusiasm about new tech would be suspicious. If you're having conversations about me... then you have way to much time on your hands. (LOL). I only try & provide as much information & detail as possible, so people can make their own informed choices. Take it or leave it, makes no difference to me if anyone buys into Atmos or not. But those who have, seem to have a positive experience, just as I have. In the past few weeks I watched both Furious7 & Age of Ultron in DTS-HD & both titles were lame in the audio department. When DTS:X finally has content available, I'll post info on that as well. Why? Because if DTS:X is great... I won't hesitate to post that info as well. I hope its good, it should be. That participation should eliminate any fabricated Atmos alliance that I have (lol). Anything I posted or shared about Atmos is accurate & rings true to my experience. The immersive audio from Mad Max in Atmos, is the best thing out there right now. Nothing else can compare with it. Heck, I have absolutely zero interest in any music from Enrique Iglesias, but the Atmos track from him on the Atmos demo disc is so good... I've listened to it 30-40-50x. Anytime someone comes over, I play the Enrique Iglesias track just to have them experience it in Atmos. Everyone always says the mix is incredible.... and it is. Now when I put on the opening chapter of Mad Max & its game over. Nismo has no affiliation with Dolby Labs, Klipsch, Sony, or any other electronics manufacturer (just a geek like everyone else here). I am Nismo & I approve this message.
