  1. Cool thing about Mr. Honda is that he started with almost nothing and no formal education. Leaving home at 15, he struck out for Tokyo to make his fortune. It's an interesting story how he created an empire.

  2. Hey Mark and JL, I guess there are Honda fans on here! Yes, he was an amazing guy, and took great interest in the racers that raced their machines. There are numerous stories about him and the way he treated his racers. Guys like Mike Hailwood, Freddie Spencer, Ayrton Senna. In the 60s he designed an engine for a new race bike to race in the world championship. It was the RC166, a 250cc 4 stroke inline 6 cylinder. I remember reading about the jewel like precision of the pistons and valve train. And especially a "secret" coating he applied on the cylinder linings. The Honda Racing Corp (HRC) tried to duplicate that "Secret" formula when they were making a replica of the RC166 back around 2006. Even though they had the original engine Mr Honda designed, they couldn't quite get the formula right. After trying a few racing engineering companies around the world, a French engineering company that did work for Formula 1 engines came closer than anyone else in duplicating that friction reducing coating. Here is that RC166 Mr Honda had designed, there are engine sound audio clips there also. Many say it's the best sounding engine ever made, revs to 18k rpm….http://world.honda.com/MotoGP/history/RC166/

  3. Yes it is.... Mr. Honda was incredible... I have done a good bit of reading on him.. After WWII that's when he started putting engines on bicycles...Before he started his motor Co. he sold piston rings to Toyota... Toyota turned him down at 1st told him they were not good enough... Back in the early 70's when the EPA was really starting to get on the BIG three car manufacturers for emission/smog he came to the US and told them he has an engine that meets all the emission/smog standards that was to be imposed by 1975. He said his engine will not only meet the standards but will not need a cat converter.. The CVCC engine. The BIG three auto manufacturers laugh at him. He went to GM and told them he could re-tool and put his CVCC cylinder heads on the 4 & 8 cylinder engines. To my understanding GM gave him a few engines and cars to experiment with. The CVCC heads worked very well on the GM engines.. He went to GM with his proposal... they turned him down saying it would be to costly. It added something like $35 to the cost of each engine. When I started with Honda back in 1986 I worked on those CVCC engines every day... They were some great engines back then.. That old Accord that I was working on this week was a old CVCC engine... really enjoyed working on it.. Before we moved to the US my dad raced motorcycles back in England.. All he rode was BSA, Norton and Triumph's.. He remembers when Honda 1st came to the Isle of Man. The 1st year Honda did not win.. but the years to follow no one could touch Honda... Yea Mr. Honda is one of my hero's... For some really cool "old" Honda stuff check out..... www.thisoldhonda.org ........you'll find some neat stuff there.. MKP :-)

  6. Good Morning everyone! My beautiful daughter just made me a cup as I am sitting here typing I am sniffing on a couple of different sets of KP-600 boxes. Need to set up some boxes for dual 18"s for my stacks Hey MKP! I bought my sisters old 2002 Acura RL 3.5. I know this car is heavy as all get out, but what do you know about getting some power out of one of these 3.5's?? How is everybody this morning? Was windy as all get out last night, but calm and 60 this morning Roger

  8. Being a big guy I rode Honda XR600R dirt bikes for years which produced 36hp at the rear wheel. Then I bought a Yamaha YZ400F with the ceramic coated cylinder, 5 valve, red line was 13.5K and the bike created close to 59hp at the rear wheel. Riding dirt bikes hasn't been the same since.

  9. That"s crazy stuff.. ya know I never got into bikes....I mean I rode a few here and there and I liked em... but never owned one... Now my dad on the other hand raced until he was in his later 60's. He would road race.. He got into old Yamaha's. He would race in a vintage class. My dad was also a horse jockey, he worked all the east coast tracks for 30+ years. He just did the Motorcycle racing as a hobby. The owner of the one Honda dealer I worked for in the late 80 was cleaning out all his old junk he had. He bought this one Honda motorcycle in the dealer one day. It looked like the one you posted in the video... it was a full blown race bike... but it was only a two cylinder 125cc. He couldn't get it running and none of us car guys wanted it. So I called my dad and told him about it. My dad bought it that afternoon. I remember he took it out to Summit Point were he raced... he had a blast with it. If I remember it had a RED line of like 14K and I think the power band was 10k.... I remember my dad saying I've never reved a eng up like this lol lol... He ended up selling it after a few years.... Yea he still kicks himself for selling it and what's really funny is my dad never rode a bike on the street in this country.. he's never owned a street bike he in the US... MKP :-)

  10. Although they lived in the same era, they were approx 400 miles apart. HD being in Milwaukee and Dodge being in Detroit. Interestingly the Dodge brothers both got the Flu in 1920 and both passed away that same year.

  12. First of all welcome to the forums and congratulations on owning one of the finest speakers that Klipsch has ever put on the market! That said, I feel I must be "that guy" and point out that you have set yourself up for years of frustration. How so? You are trying to make a speaker designed for stereo (aka "2 channel") reproduction fit into a modern home theater set up. You're already feeling some of the pain too: what center works best with the Chorus? what surrounds? do you need a different receiver? should you try tubes? and on and on. I totally understand if you only have space for a single system and have decided to make it one with a screen and lots of speakers. This is a fun way to watch football games and concert DVDs, play Xbox/PS/etc, or get a thrill out of movies with lots of explosions. After all, we are on the Home Theater part of the Klipsch forums. About 20 years ago I was in your shoes: I had a nice stereo in my (one and only) living room. So I decided to just live with my TV hooked up to my stereo. It was OK. Then, as I slowly got into DVD and Dolby Digital/DTS, I decided my stereo (including my Klipsch Heritage speakers) needed to have their own room. First it was a bedroom, then it was a basement, then I moved to a house with two living areas and set up a dedicated two channel system in the smaller of the two. The Synergy speakers I decided to use in my home theater simply do movies/sports/concerts in a more convincing way than my Heritage speakers (which, alas, never found their matched centers or surrounds). Of course, I wouldn't dream of doing critical listening to stereo source material on my home theater rig. That's not what it's designed for. And I'm not alone. I would venture a guess that a slight majority of members here keep a separate 2CH system in a different room that is optimized for just music. I have heard hundreds of audio systems in my life but I've never heard a system that excelled at both music and movies. I will say that a rig that is optimized for music will do better with movies than a home theater system will with just 2 channel music. There is a psychological effect in play here too: some people can't maximize two senses simultaneously. I am one. Sit me in front of a 50+ inch hi-def screen and I will see everything. The accompanying audio almost fades into insignificance. But turn off the screen and I am suddenly aware of the audio. Better still: pick that TV up and completely remove it from the room. Now you've relaxed the visual cortex of my brain (it is no longer anticipating something to watch) and my hearing becomes very acute. I am totally unable to do "critical listening" when there is a screen in the room. From my experience, this is not at all uncommon. You walk into a room with a big screen in it and your brain says "Goody! What are we watching?" That's not conducive to effective listening. Consider the option nobody has yet mentioned: put those mighty Chorus speakers into their own stereo system and stop stressing about finding matching center and surround channels and AVRs and such. Just get a nice 50 watt tube amp and a high quality source (CD, vinyl, or HRA player). Keep the screens out and use that system for LISTENING. I predict you will quickly find yourself caring a lot less about trivial things like bass "slam" as you let beautifully lifelike and dynamic stereo sound produced by vintage Klipsch speakers wash over you (eyes closed for best effect!) Meanwhile, get whatever 5.1 speakers-du-jour are recommended to you here. Hook them up to your Yamaha AVR and fire up that big screen with a good flick. Be binary. Be happy. Good luck!

  22. I'll start off by saying that I am extremely happy to be a part of this fine group and I had been wanting a pair of Klipsch speakers for years now ever since I first bought a pair of the Pro Media 2.1's and I was absolutely blown away! I had already owned a pair of JBL floor standing speakers which were very good but when my brother bought a pair of Energy take 6 classics and they almost sounded better than my 1000 dollar jbl floor standing speakers I knew I had to go Klipsch! Not to mention, I always loved the sound of the horn. I've spoken with some that don't like it and think it's too harsh but me personally I love the strong vocals it produces! I started looking into used and found 2 items that interested me one being a pair of RP-5's and the other being a pair of Chorus I's that the guy claimed to be mint. upon some research I saw that these Chorus speakers get nothing but the highest praises so I went and checked them out and sure enough they were in immaculate shape so I bought them and could not be happier! Now I am thinking I need to redo my whole audio system. As of right now I am looking to get a new center. I have a pair of JBL bookshels that I might keep as the rears because rear's really don't do that much in a theather I know the main's and center should match and be on par with each other. Now my question is which center should I go with? I actually called Klipsch and the guy told me I could try to find a single chorus or other vintage speaker but that really isn't an option because it would cover half my tv. I was thinking of the RP-450C What do you guys suggest? Also just out of curiosity, do you guys think I made the right choice going with the Chorus's over the RP-5's? I ask because I don't have any experience with that speaker. Thank you to everyone that read's my post and again, I'm glad to be a part of the community!

  25. If you run across another Chorus you could make a cabinet to hold everything. This is a Forte ll center which is not far off from a Chorus as far a size. Good luck, until you find something just run it on phantom, it's better than something that don't match at all. imo Have fun, you did great so far.

  31. Good Friday morning gang Installed the power supply in the Cave Pc last night and found hard drive has gone south Good to have back up's, Pc's that is. Have a few spare "New" hard drives, so I dig those out, I find they have changed connectors since 5 years ago It seems my stash of "New" hard drives is older than the Pc I built. Maybe a trip to Fry's a little later, 5 year warranty on these things and I made it six, no biggie New Receiver came in yesterday, still acquiring "New" ant goodies for the new radio. Of course I just had to hang a wire on it and throw the wire out the window, it works well. In fact someone, somewhere around here has a "Bug" in their house, HUMMMM? I could hear everything going on in a normal home, interesting. Never heard a "Bug" in the lower KHz range, and we are talking 200Khz, just below AM radio. Packages arriving daily for "New" Ant/install. Neighbor's be-a-talkin, Man, That guy sure get's a lot of delivery's Postman say's anymore packages he wants his own coffee cup. FedEx guy wants to come over for a beer and see the new "Listening" station when completed This is what im doing spending the SB winnings, the wife has had her share, can you image, a wife who does NOT want to go shopping? Huevos rancheros sounds pretty dam good right now. Happy Friday.

I want nothing to do with things at my shop... Anyway.... any spare off a Honda SUV or truck should work if it has the 22mm lug nuts.... I'll send ya PM with some thoughts... MKP :-)

  35. Late to this thread, but congrats your Chorus'! There really should be a disclaimer about the rabbit hole you just went down with Klipsch. I started with a pair of Heresy's, then Cornwalls, then Forte's, then Chorus II's, then finally to a pair of La Scalas, and that's just the Heritage line of Klipsch that I've own/owned. However, I have a sneaky suspicion that Klipschorns will eventually make their way into my listening room Like some of the guys were saying get some good power to those 15's. It's not going to be the deepest bass you've ever heard but they will definitely be tight, and chest punching.

  36. Well if you are concerned with the audible difference the biggest will be caused by the internal plate resistance (rp). In a class AB amp there can be large current differences between quiescent state and full signal state, this change in current causes a change in voltage across the rp and the result is audible in the form of compression, or "sag". The less this resistance the stiffer the supply is. Changing a rectifier out with more or less rp will give you more or less sag. In a class A amp like the Yamamoto A08-S the current draw is relatively the same from quiescent state to full signal state so there is little change in voltage across the rp. BUT when you change from one type rectifier to another with more or less rp you will get more or less quiescent voltage, this can result in more or less power available since a lower plate voltage means less of a voltage swing. There are a lot of other things to consider from an engineering standpoint when choosing a rectifier but I won't get into that unless anyone really wants. -Cindy

  37. Morning gang... slept in a bit this morning... was up late..not to much going on today.... will go to the shop later and continue with the clean up... We'll be staying at mom's house tonight and tomorrow. We told our eldest daughter she needs the weekend off. She'll be picking up her boy friend and stay at our house while were at moms. Rog...those RL's are some nice cars.... the RL is Acura's flagship... to be honest I don't really know anything about performance up-grades on those cars. I tell ya man I got out of doing any performance work for these Honda guys... I mean I did a few motor swaps and a few engine builds on the "B" engines but never any V-6 engines. Alot of those Honda "racer's" are kids with no money and just a bunch of tool bags. The one build I did for this one guy was a B-16 build in a Civic Si.. This guy had some coin and wanted to run a BIG turbo with BIG boost. So I did full blown out turbo build. Got the block sleeved, forged pistons and all the goodies. It was a $12k build with-out the turbo. I told him lets run the engine for a few weeks and put the turbo on later. That was a good plan for him cuz he didn't have the money for the turbo at the time. Well at the end of the day when I added my time in the car and the money I made on parts.... I really didn't make that much... I make more money doing service work... Oh he never cam back for me to put the turbo on.... I found out he sold the car Yea tool bag!!! So me and The BOSS decided we were a maintenance/repair shop and to hell with those fools. If I'm building something it for me or the BOSS I got my tree guy at the house this morning.... he's taking down a huge Oak... and he'll be bringing me his wife's Toyota Highlander next week for timing belt/ water pump/ spark plugs and all the fluids... Yup I'll take care of his Toyota he does my tree....I love to barter.... OK gang gonna roll .... check in later.... MKP :-)

  42. Small rears don't do much in a 5 or 7 channel system because, well they're small. Get a real speaker for side and surround and you will be amazed at what they put out. But i do agree it's not the most important part of a good home theater system by a long shot. Welcome to the forum.

  43. Chorus was definitely the way to go... If you can't fit another Chorus I, Forte I or Heresy in to your center channel position then try and find an Academy. It's the closest conventional center channel match for the Chorus I. Here's a link to a web archive for the Academy... Unfortunately the main Klipsch website is being updated and there are no specs/information currently listed for the Academy. Next best choice would probably be KLF-C7. Both are relatively easy to find (craigslist/ebay), but are becoming more rare by the day. https://web.archive.org/web/20130527194758/http://www.klipsch.com/academy-center-speaker

  44. I'd probably stay away from the reference centers and go with an older type center between the chorus. Something like an academy, KLF c7, or kv4 may work out ok.

  45. I'd look for a Heresy or if you have room a Cornwall. Ideally, another Chorus would be ideal but in most cases too tall for a center.

  47. Thar 'speaker' on the back is a passive radiator, and works the same as a port or vent on other models. It is there to tune the low end response. If you don't care about looks (they are on the back), you can repair/plug the hole with a small bit of pva glue, silicone glue, rtv... If there is a tear, you can remove the passive from the cabinet and use a small bit of tissue paper/cigarette paper with glue to patch the tear. Bruce
