  1. Several months ago, my 14yr old daughter mentioned she would like to have a stereo for her bedroom. So of course I immediately headed to Craigslist to look for some Klipsch. I found a pair of RF-5, RC-7 and RB-5 for $600. I figured at that price, I could keep a pair of the speakers and sell the rest. I brought them home and asked my daughter if she would rather have the towers or bookshelf speakers in her bedroom and she said the bookshelf (I would have picked the RF-5's but hey....it's her room). I didn't have a need for the RF-5 or RC-7 so I ended up selling them and ended up with the RB-5 for free. A few weeks later, I found an Onkyo TX-SR602 for $30 and then several weeks after that, I found a small entertainment center for $20. I figured it would make a nice birthday gift for her so I stored the entertainment center at the church and the speakers and receiver in the HT. Not a bad first system for $50. So tomorrow is her 15th birthday and she's spending the night at a friend's so I brought home the entertainment center and hooked up her first system. I think she is going to be thoroughly impressed. I couldn't believe how terrible her TV sound was. I mean really awful. I think she will be pleasantly surprised.

  2. Warm here, too. AC is running right now. Got to finish demolition of the main bath. Total remodel. Have to straighten out the electrical will the walls are partially open. Amazing how some people wire a house. Electricians do not seem to understand the code. Oh well, set here and catch up on the news, eat breakfast (my usual plain oatmeal mixed with yogurt with dry toast), then back to the bathroom to clean up the mess from late last night.

  7. Morning gang, enjoying my blueberry, banana, psyllium husk, flaxseed oil, and honey breakfast shake. (don't like coffee) It was 72 here yesterday, absolutely beautiful, but the 20s are coming back later this week. I had 22 Beech trees cut down, the beetles got them, so I have at least one whole day of cleaning up my lawn ahead of me. Have a great day folks….anybody checking out the Daytona 500?

  12. 77 predicted here today, but rain for the next few days then nice again. Yes very good news Steve, I don't drink often but when I do on occasion I make up for lost time. But I drink coffee everyday all day so I guess my liver is constantly rebuilding, now if I could just do that with brain cells ! .

  19. I lived with my grandfather who died of Pick's disease, which is similar to Alzheimer. Some of the stuff he would say would have us rolling on the ground. It was hard not to laugh as he knew what was going and would get made. It wasn't right, but you just couldn't help it. His favorite thing to say, which was probably the only thing he said up to the time he past was "yeah sure you bet". He was always restless, always wanted to go for walks. It got to the point my grandmother and I couldn't control him, so we put him in a home. At first he figured out that there was an access code to open the door. So they had to cover it to keep him from escaping. Its tough to see someone go through that, I feel for you.

  23. I just wanna make a quick update when I said I didn't really see that these speakers didn't have much bass I had only listened to MP3's and some flac files from my computer. I wanted to wait until I got a center to put in a bluray but tonight I decided what the hell just try it... and WOOOOW they are MONSTERS! When they say it really depends if you feed these things a quality signal they aren't lying! I had to check several times to make sure I didn't accidentally turn my sub on! Now I see what everyone means when they say bass you can feel in your bones! When I bought these things I told the guy I had a sub, he looked at me and said trust me, you wont need it these thing can rattle a nail out of a wall! Now I see what he meant!

  26. Morning gang... slept in a bit this morning... was up late..not to much going on today.... will go to the shop later and continue with the clean up... We'll be staying at mom's house tonight and tomorrow. We told our eldest daughter she needs the weekend off. She'll be picking up her boy friend and stay at our house while were at moms. Rog...those RL's are some nice cars.... the RL is Acura's flagship... to be honest I don't really know anything about performance up-grades on those cars. I tell ya man I got out of doing any performance work for these Honda guys... I mean I did a few motor swaps and a few engine builds on the "B" engines but never any V-6 engines. Alot of those Honda "racer's" are kids with no money and just a bunch of tool bags. The one build I did for this one guy was a B-16 build in a Civic Si.. This guy had some coin and wanted to run a BIG turbo with BIG boost. So I did full blown out turbo build. Got the block sleeved, forged pistons and all the goodies. It was a $12k build with-out the turbo. I told him lets run the engine for a few weeks and put the turbo on later. That was a good plan for him cuz he didn't have the money for the turbo at the time. Well at the end of the day when I added my time in the car and the money I made on parts.... I really didn't make that much... I make more money doing service work... Oh he never cam back for me to put the turbo on.... I found out he sold the car Yea tool bag!!! So me and The BOSS decided we were a maintenance/repair shop and to hell with those fools. If I'm building something it for me or the BOSS I got my tree guy at the house this morning.... he's taking down a huge Oak... and he'll be bringing me his wife's Toyota Highlander next week for timing belt/ water pump/ spark plugs and all the fluids... Yup I'll take care of his Toyota he does my tree....I love to barter.... OK gang gonna roll .... check in later.... MKP :-)

  27. I recently sold one of my previous DIY subs (Thread Here), and decided I wanted something that plays a bit lower. So I went bigger. Decided to go with the Dayton Audio RSS460HO-4. Everything I read about the sub was positive. Great sound quality and output. I also prefer the aesthetics of the driver over that of the Ultimax or SI HT18 (which were my other options). Box is in progress and the driver should arrive tomorrow (Friday the 19th). Driver arrived today. Much larger in person that photos would leave you to believe. Test fitted and adjusted as necessary. I cut the holes a bit small since I didn't have the driver yet. Installed the terminal, wiring, T-nuts and polyfill. All that's left is a few coats of polyurethane coating and installing the driver. Its a hard color to photograph in the rooms since it doesn't get much light, but looks stunning in person. Complete and ready to be broken in. Completed weight came in about 70lbs.

  31. Afternoon gang....just checking in with my coffee buds.... Slow day today...we stayed at moms last night...were still here.... I slept on the couch last night The BOSS slept in the kids room. Mom sleeps in her chair...she will not go to bed...and if she does she'll get up in the night and walk around the house.... my daughter has found her wandering around the house at night. But she seems to stay in her chair overnight. I guess this is the best we can do right now. I asked mom if she wanted to take alittle walk outside....she's alittle restless today....she told me NO I don't want to go outside and clean car windshields.....lol lol...you know all we can do is laugh...the things she says is off the chain.....now we don't laugh at her....but some of the stuff is just so funny.... We try to keep her busy with small little tasks....like folding a few towels and just throwing the junk mail away... Well all in all were doing ok....another week tomorrow....ok enjoy the rest of your Sunday... MKP :-)

  35. Surface mount is a whole different animal. While you can do it with a small tip and a very steady hand, the right way is with a hot air iron. Even the solder you use is different. Instead of your typical solder on a roll, you use solder paste. It comes in a syringe type plunger. Under magnification you can see it is actually little solder balls suspended in a thick rosin fluid. Like standard soldering, it takes some practice to get it down. How hot the air is, how much solder paste, how close to the part you get, etc... The older I get the more magnification I need. Hence the Leica scope on my bench. I work more in the 0805 and 1206 arena, but the sizes range smaller starting with 0201 (0.6mm x 0.30mm) up to 2512 (6.3mm x 3.1mm). Now this is for bench work. Vapor baths and ovens are industrial manufacturing soldering on a large scale.

  36. Good day off Craigslist; a SW-10 II, 2-KG5.5, 2-KG 2.5 and a KV1 for a Grant. They are a little rough due to being stored in a shed but they all work. I am listening to the KG 5.5 at the moment.

  38. We were having a Christmas party in Hope (in the 80's) and had set up a pair of MCM's in the plant, being driven by a 1000 watt Perreaux amp. Of course, "modern" music was being played at a fairly hefty volume, when Paul said to me, "I wonder if God will forgive me for designing that speaker?" I'm sure He did. I think of him often. He was the only person I ever met that could speak for hours on why the number 5 was such an interesting number, and you would hang onto every single word, fascinated.

  41. Being a big guy I rode Honda XR600R dirt bikes for years which produced 36hp at the rear wheel. Then I bought a Yamaha YZ400F with the ceramic coated cylinder, 5 valve, red line was 13.5K and the bike created close to 59hp at the rear wheel. Riding dirt bikes hasn't been the same since.

  42. That"s crazy stuff.. ya know I never got into bikes....I mean I rode a few here and there and I liked em... but never owned one... Now my dad on the other hand raced until he was in his later 60's. He would road race.. He got into old Yamaha's. He would race in a vintage class. My dad was also a horse jockey, he worked all the east coast tracks for 30+ years. He just did the Motorcycle racing as a hobby. The owner of the one Honda dealer I worked for in the late 80 was cleaning out all his old junk he had. He bought this one Honda motorcycle in the dealer one day. It looked like the one you posted in the video... it was a full blown race bike... but it was only a two cylinder 125cc. He couldn't get it running and none of us car guys wanted it. So I called my dad and told him about it. My dad bought it that afternoon. I remember he took it out to Summit Point were he raced... he had a blast with it. If I remember it had a RED line of like 14K and I think the power band was 10k.... I remember my dad saying I've never reved a eng up like this lol lol... He ended up selling it after a few years.... Yea he still kicks himself for selling it and what's really funny is my dad never rode a bike on the street in this country.. he's never owned a street bike he in the US... MKP :-)

  45. I think I figured it out. I biased the follower so that it is really close to 0v so the two stages interact with one another. It should be rich in second order harmonic distortion. Gain is around 18db. You could always stick a volume pot at the input too but I assume your instrument has volume controls. What do you guys think? -Cindy

  46. Actually, Gary left the company about 1984 or 1985, after the KG2 and KG4. The "KG" became kind of a brand or series unto itself, which they continued with other designs after his departure.

  47. All Klipsch speakers (and any speaker in general, that I am aware of, with the caveat there are a couple of physical configurations where it is necessary to "reverse" the polarity) will have the woofers wired with positive polarity (a positive voltage applied to the positive terminal will result in a positive excursion of the cone, away from the magnet structure). The wavelengths of the bass frequencies are such that if any woofer in the system (Klipsch or otherwise) is out of polarity with another woofer, the bass response will suffer greatly. As an aside and not to nitpick at all, we are discussing polarity here, and not phase (although the two are often used interchangeably in polite conversation). Polarity is frequency independent. Phase varies with frequency. If you are saying that the terminals don't seem to be marked, look closely at the terminals on the woofer. I think they used a red Sharpie marker to mark the positive terminal, back in the day. It may have faded or been rubbed off, but might still be slightly visible if you look hard enough.
