  1. Here's another one .... I was about 15 and had a date I wanted to impress so I got tickets to see Herman's Hermits. There was a relatively unknown group opening the show called 'The Who.' Enjoy your Sunday folks.

  2. How 'bout this - saw the Grateful Dead/Iron Butterfly I'd guess somewhere around 1968-70, Municipal Auditorium, KC. Oh, the Dead were the front band, Butterfly headlined the show!

  7. big fan of Iron Butterfly here--if you offered me tickets to both and made me choose one -- i’d pick Iron Butterfly. In A Gadda Da Vida Baby! How loud was it? Brian May of Queen said that Iron Butterfly was known for being one of the loudest bands at the time...and they had these things called horns and bass bins.

  9. After Prince’s death, i was listening to a sport’s talk show on the radio. The host, a guy named John Ireland, was telling a story about seeing Prince live. Like me, John was just a young man at that time--not on the radio or television like he is now. So, he’s telling the radio audience this story and he tells the SAME story that i just told you! For all i know, we were standing next to each other. funny ending to that day--a VW beetle was parked blocking the exit from the parking lot. Back in 1982, we had to pay $20 to park at this gas station. The owner closed his station for business and packed the lot with cars instead of selling gas. So, about 12 of us are upset at this VW, so we pick it up and start moving it. LAPD drives by and stops. The cop rolls down the window and says, “just don’t leave it in traffic.” then he drives off.

  10. Amazing story Steve! It is so interesting how certain musicians are 'turned down', then later become ICONS !

  14. It's been many, many years since I went to a real rock concert. Spoiled by listening to my Klipsch at home. Went with my 19 year old son to a concert last week, group called Alabama Shakes. I'd heard a little of their stuff but not much. Anyway, opening act gets up there, typical cruddy sound, muddy bass way too heavy in the mix, poor vocals, screechy lead guitar. I'm sitting there thinking "Yup, this is why I quit going to concerts all right". Then Alabama Shakes comes out after a complete equipment change on stage. OMG! WTF!! Who are these people? Never heard any concert sound like that ever. Hear every tinkle of chimes, every shimmer of cymbals, every trailing half-note of the guitar. All at over 100 dB. This lead singer, an African-American woman from northern Alabama just tears up an SG, plays it like it was a ukelele. I've never in my life heard such a tightly integrated group. We were about 30 rows back, right in front of the sound booth. It was like getting hit by a car. So I'm dumbfounded by the quality and volume. Never sat down the whole time. Talk about hair-trigger dynamics, this is what it's all about. So my son buys their LP album, we fire it up. Now I've got a old Yammie mid-fi turntable, still has the M95ED cart on it from the early eighties. Hasn't been used much in recent decades, but I dragged it out and got a new belt on it awhile back. It plays into a Dynaco tube pre, which dumps into a 3 channel TEAC digital amp via a PWK splitter. Anyway, untouched 1960 Khorns and a homebuilt center Belle. I'm totally dumbfounded again. The whole rig just kicks butt all over the place. So does the recording. I don't know where these people record but their stuff is more or less perfect. Whoever their recording engineer is must be a genius. High energy, high volume sound is just flawless. It's good to get some enthusiasm back. Maybe I'll build more LS and Belles. Alabama Shakes, the entire neighborhood.

  15. My wife and I start the day by bringing our cat Sully (named after Sully Erna from Godsmack) to the vet for a checkup, some shots, etc. His asthma has been bad as of late (yes my wife and cat have asthma), so they put him on prednisone, and give us a prescription for a flovent inhaler. My father comes over to hang out playing with speakers. We wanted to do some serious hardcore a+b+c comparisons with kg5.2, kg5.5, and klf10 speakers. The kg5.2's had the best mid-range and most neutral highs out of the three. The klf10's sounded better than the kg5.5's which really surprised us. With my Yamaha m40 2 channel power amp, I can hook up three pairs of speakers to compare or play at the same time. The best setup we came up with was the kg5.2's in the corners playing with the klf10's at the same time, but with the tweeters from the 10s disconnected. This sounded great. Really deep bass, with great neutral mid-range and highs. We proceeded to swap speakers in and out of the corners, kg5.2s, kg5.5s, klf10s, klf20s, and klf30s. To really compare the overall sound of the klf20s and klf30s without the efficiency difference, we put the klf30s in front of the tv stand and the klf20s in the corners. This made the volume almost identical between the 2 pair. I felt that the klf30s still sounded better in the mid-range and highs than the klf20s. I'm not sure why this would happen. I have replacement mid-range diagrams, tweeters, and crossovers from Bob Crites in the klf30s and the klf20s only have the upgraded tweeters. At one point I ask my dad "if you think about what we are doing, do you think anyone else is doing this?" He answers "we are probably the only ones stupid enough to spend their Saturday doing this, now move that speaker over there." We finally put the living room back together for my atmos surround setup and watch/listen to some atmos demos. My dad left to go home and my wife and I went out for dinner and ice cream. I picked up a cheap stereo cabinet for my bedroom for my turntable to get it off my one of my belles. I cleaned it up and we brought it upstairs to have our first real vinyl listening session. We started with Disturbed's latest album, then No Doubt's "Tragic Kingdom" album, and then Deep Purple's Machine Head album. While listening, I worked on my dad's laptop while my wife was coloring in a coloring book (we have no kids, only a cat). We felt the need to post this, because we cannot believe anyone has had a day like ours. Everything just seemed odd/perfect. Especially since we were listening to No Doubt on vinyl and not CD or cassette. Goodnight everyone.

  19. 1994? What? I saw them at their “farewell” tour in 1982! (oh yeah, one of the opening acts was booed off the stage during his third song--don’t feel bad, the guy named Prince went on to do very well for himself in the industry). Other opening acts were J. Geils and George Thorogood. Saw them in Los Angeles at the coliseum.

  23. congrats to your nephew--he’s stationed in Grand Haven? Nice little town--i really enjoyed my time there. it was culture shock moving there from Los Angeles; but, it really grew on me. Thanks for the well wishes about the tooth; hopefully the dentist will fix me up. As usual, i’m having pre-trip stress. EVERYTIME, days before i make a trip, i encounter sick people. I was just at the auto club taking care of some insurance matters and the nice lady that helped me may have been named Typhoid Mary. She politely refused to shake hands saying, “i have a horrible cold.” I thought that was nice; but, she’s handling paperwork. And i thought all i had to worry about was the nail stuck in my car tire (i’m getting it fixed on Monday).

  24. Good afternoon my friends............well, nice friendship story there MKP ! ...and I do hope that OT gets things back to normalcy soon! I drive by an number of 'hip roofed' homes every day to and from work, and that 3" EMT pipe is the only way power gets down to the meter. I have seen a bent up one before and always wondered how THAT happened! Anyway, our band played an outdoor show today and it was BRUTAL !! Only in the mid 90ies, but the humid stuff about killed us!! We finished the two hour show without incident, but I felt weak and such during my load out afterward. Shower a second time as soon as I got home and just chillin' with the central ac right now... Dinner soon, then some music and friendship per normal over in RTM this evening.........dropping by Chuck? I was thinking of firing up the magnetics tonight along with some brand new vinyl I will have a freshly opened bottle of RED vino going......should be a nice evening... I hope Steve will come by as well...........we could always use some Brian May ! More soon.... Enjoy the day everyone... ................Gary

  26. These were originally birch plywood with exposed layer plywood cabinets. After sanding smooth and cutting out the corner trim notches I installed quartered figured eucalyptus veneer and solid teak corner trim and install side to side and back internal bracing and made new slanted risers with matching veneer. I installed neo magnets under the front board veneer and made new 1/2" grill frames and installed banana plug terminals. Redid the E2 xovers with Solen 400VDC caps and bypass cap on parallel woofer cap. First time using this veneer and I'm spraying with satin lacquer. Still need more coats and then rub down.

  30. The most live sounding speakers I have are the LaScalas. I didn't see them in your list. There is a steep roll-off starting at about 60Hz. Just enough for a nice kickdrum sound. Since the LS has a horn loaded bass bin as well as horns for the midrange and tweeter, it is among the most natural sounding Klipsch. You can step up into bigger speakers with the Jubilee and the Cinema offerings, but for consumer level it's the LaScala and if you have the room for it Klipschorns.

  34. Ahhhh..... There's my man .... Good to hear from ya..... Morning all..... man what a week, crazy busy at the shop and the heat was back. Gonna be in the upper 90's all weekend with a heat index in the 100's. Will be staying inside doing some stuff around the house. The BOSS and I got the home office all fixed up and we are now working on all of our media. All of our CD's and movies were shoved in this old book shelf hutch thing...it was a mess. Mucking through the KAOS I found some old treasures that were long forgotten about. Old VHS tapes of the kids and just other junk that needs to trashed.....It's crazy how much "stuff" we hold on to....I hate just trowing stuff away... I like to find a new home for for things.... Like the stacks of all the VHS Movies.... last weekend we went to Ikea and got two new book shelves with glass doors. I built them last night, they look really nice. I'll load some pics when were all done with the new look. Got a buddy coming over this afternoon....Tyler.... he's a young guy that rolled up to the shop many many years ago in his Acura GSR Integra. He did some engine work and it wasn't running right. I got it all fixed up for him and we have been friends since then. His mom and dad came to the shop one afternoon and asked me if they paid me would I let there son work at the shop... lol lol... They told me all he talks about is me and my shop. I was really flattered.... I declined there offer and they understood. One year Tyler's dad was killed in a work accident. He was a stone mason.... He was working at the college just in town building a arch. he was cutting stone when the saw kicked back. The saw hit him in the neck..... really bad stuff... Tyler was crushed..... I tried to be there as much as I could for him.... Over the years we have been very close.... But life gets in the way of alot of things.... I haven't seen him several months... We text every few weeks.... Last week he told me he wasn't doing very good and wouldn't tell me why.... So last night I called him and told him to get his A$$ over to the house to chill with the "old folk" for awhile.... he was really happy to hear from me... You could just tell in his voice... OK..... coffee all done..... just waiting on my buddy...... a good weekend to all... MKP :-)

  37. So, people are comparing loudspeakers to other loudspeakers, crossover networks to different crossover networks. I wonder if how many people compare their system (electronics, speakers, and room) to a live performance any more? I guess everyone is too busy or broke trying PIO caps and $35 resistors in their crossovers to go to a concert anymore.

  39. To stay competitive in a global market, companies and nation must use their comparative advantage. A lot of products are from several countries if you look at the parts. All products made in China are not inferior to American made products. We use to say the same thing about Japan and Korea. All the talk of job lost is not true. import jobs are created. I had a Cadillact that was desing in Italy, the engine was German. China competes in the Global market and has had success not because they are the cheapest but, their products are competitive with the rest of the world. Nothing stays the same and change is a part of evolution in civilizations.

  43. Me too; always been ecstatic about my WPA 3.5 SETs (and Wright phono preamp/lineamp). Listening at an average 80dB from the chair, I have +20dB of headroom under the first watt. I seriously doubt the La Scalas have ever seen a peak over 1 watt in the years I've had them.

  45. You would not be able to afford quality speakers if they are made in America. The labor cost here is about 100 times the labor cost in China. The meaning of Capitalism is made for profit not quality.
