  3. Aja is very good. I can't argue against anyone who advocates for it. For some reason, though, I can't just pull the trigger. I think about "Can't Buy a Thrill," "Katy Lied," and "The Royal Scam." All 3 of those were really great albums.

  4. Aja without question. Two songs on that album that I use for reference tracks when comparing components and pairs of speakers..the song Aja, and the song I Got The News. 11. Yes, congested to me means veiled or dull or just not dynamic. This is obviously just my opinion and this is to say nothing to those who own and enjoy Cornwall's, chorus, forte. I don't know how far you can raise the top hat of the La Scala II and make it still elegantly presentable within its intended design. I'm sure I've probably said this before on the forum, but I have had people over to my home and have listened to all of my systems and virtually all of my speakers and almost every single one of them has said how much more they enjoy the LS splits than any of the others. And, the funny thing is is that they are almost completely stock other than some Dayton capacitors that have been replaced in the crossovers. Stock K 77 tweeters stock K 55 mid range and of course the stock K 43 woofer in the base bins.. looking forward to eventually installing the Crites CT 120 tweeters and the A55G mid range drivers in those bad boys…

  12. Good evening vinyl lovers.................sadly, I just found out that we lost one half of Steely Dan today (Walter Becker).............so we are having a bit of a tribute play over in RTM.......... Here the wine if poured, the celebration of the musician has begun..

  17. Lost another one. Walter Becker this time. They had people all lined up at the Charlotte Coliseum and into the parking/party lot that afternoon and cancelled the show. Folks did not know it, Steely Dan was already in town and had to pull out. When they left they flew their Leer Jet over the Coliseum kinda low, jacked the nose straight up and punched it. Busted a lot of windows out of the chrome dome and folks did not know about terrorist attacks back then.... Anyhow RIP Walter Becker you were one HELL of a musician!!

  19. I cooked up a batch today. Neil was kind enough to get me some cyastat. Slurry before cooking it up. After about an hour, took the brew off the stove and began adding other items. Cooled and put into a couple bottles for easy use later. one of 5 sacrificial lambs. Sacrificial in the sense of figuring out how much to apply to make removal easier. There was enough left in my Pyrex container to do all 10 sides plus probably another 5 full albums. All of the records in this batch were given to me by a work colleague after spending many a year in his NJ basement in storage. Will update with results hopefully later today after drying and peeling. I'm in the AZ desert so dust and static are really bad. Fingers are crossed that I followed the recipe correctly and get the result I need to continue enjoying my collection!

  20. Were it not for Steely Dan I may not have veered off into discovering the jazz world when I did. It was the jazz inflection in some of their music that broke me out of the 4/4 time blues box that I and most rock fans were living in at the time.

  21. Not only bass, but the TASTIEST guitar licks that NOT blues based. Unique stuff you have to listen for, expecially on the last 2 CD's they made in 2000, and 2003.

  22. I've had Klipschorns and La Scalas. Currently have Belles. With good recordings (especially Classical and Jazz), I managed to get all of them to image quite nicely with an image that extends outside and behind the speakers with a solid center and good specificity throughout the soundstage. Just my opinion. In my room. With my gear. Etc.

  23. A discussion and a picture on this subject can be found here (a prior system configuration): To make the Belle or La Scala really image and open up in timbre (i.e., to become neutral sounding), I went down the following path and found the annotated sonic results at each step. Note that if you want to really hear how any loudspeaker images, listen to it in mono... My path, in summary: 1) I plugged in a stock Belle/La Scala using passive crossovers (a terrible timbre match with the two Jub corner horns, even with absorption placed as I described above). 2) EQed much flatter using active crossover, still mono-amping (still a big timbre shift with respect to the corner horns, but not as pronounced.) 3) Bypass the passive crossover and tri-amp, EQing flat but not correcting the time delays for the bass, midrange, and tweeter (still a significant timbre shift and lower clarity, but not so much as the prior configuration). 4) Dialed in the correct time delays for the midrange and tweeter (suddenly the timbre corrects itself to sound just like the Jubs, and the clarity takes a leap upward). 5) Flattened the FR further (even better timbre matching). 6) Replace the midrange horn/driver with a time-aligned K-510 horn with K-69-A driver, and EQed flat (much better seamless integration between Jubs). 7) Replaced the tweeter with Beyma CP25 (much smoother and much better HF integration between Jubs, with only the "apparent source width" (ASW) on the center loudspeaker being significantly narrower than the Jubs. This performance is what I used for about a year and a half of total service. I finally replaced the tri-amped JuBelle with bi-amped time-aligned K-402-MEH (seamless integration with Jubs across the full width of the room--walking from side wall to the other side wall, with center clarity and imaging exceed the corner horns). 24. Good Labor day to one and all............ Going to take a motorcycle ride with my backpack and do a little shopping instead of taking the SUV.... Weather is GOOD today vs. the cold rainout we had yesterday.... Mark, I was noting that on my SHO the neg. terminal on the battery was developing corrosion, and I was just keeping ahead of it by vacuuming it up... But, a few weeks back, the main 4 gauge cable clamp rotted off !! So, I will see if I can find another clamp and re-strip a new end on that cable.... Thing is, I want to have a matching type cable battery clamp... It is a steel 'band' type and NOT lead.... I wonder if I would have to go to the Ford dealer for such a thing..... Hmmmm. perhaps see what the local auto parts stores may have in stock.... So, just puttering around with this and that........nothing too strenuous .. Enjoy the day my friends.....

  25. Of the specifically mentioned Steely Dan CDs, I would have to say Aja. I know it was not a part of the scope of the question, but I always liked the CDs that Donald Fagen released, separate from being with SD. Of those, I really like Nightfly and Morph The Cat and Kamakiriad the best. RIP Walter - Passed away yesterday at 67 years old.

  26. Easily the best drum/percussion performance on Aja is by Steve Gadd, on the song Aja. Incredible complexity and precision.

  28. Good morning then and Happy Labor Day! May do some labor today but, very little... May go to the Hut and listen to music there, May not, just do not know but, watching to see what others do, or not do. Do not to plan these things. If I think this is boring, I am right. Good day...

  31. yeah i agree with wvu. maybe speakers are set to large and they need to be set to small so bass is directed to sub? or maybe we have the rca hooked in to the wrong spot on the avr? lost of possibilities

  34. The braces helped a lot with sidewall flexing and distortion on certain songs first noticed by the band director. The quick and dirty fix was to cut some 3/4 dowels to temporarily wedge between the sidewalls and the vertical edges of doghouses immediately before the tapered "roof" of the doghouses. That stopped the sidewalls from resonating at an audible frequency. There was a distinct improvement. Later, while doing the djk bass mod, I made real braces from 3/4" Baltic birch plywood. To make the patterns, I cut poster board into sections to fit the straight edges into the horn against the sidewalls and doghouse roof letting the poster board overlap. The poster board sections were then taped together to hold the pieces in the shape of the opening. Thus, patterns were made from which to cut the braces. After fitting the braces in the openings, I drew lines on the sidewalls and doghouse to mark the 3/4 strip the braces would eventually occupy. Pilot holes were drilled in the sidewalls and doghouse. Obviously, it's necessary to open the doghouse to be able to run screws from the inside of the doghouse, through the pilot holes, and into the braces. A thin bead of Loctite Premuim PL on the braces holds everything in place. The screws hold everything in place while the adhesive sets up. I left the screws in place. Prior to closing the doghouse, I smeared the screw heads inside the doghouse with RTV silicone sealer. I also put silicone in all of the internal seams in the doghouse, just because it was open and the seams were relatively accessible. The screws on the outsides of the sidewalls were covered with Bondo prior to Duratex. Klipsch would not have increased the sidewalls of LS IIs to 1.0" had flexing and distortion not been a known problem. Feel free to contact me with questions.

  36. Very interesting. I have never run a middle channel with my Khorns. I've heard a set-up like that a couple times (back in the days when Klipsch dealers actually did things like that). I think Chesky has magic potions, that's pretty cool. As a guy who's owned 4 pair of Maggies and always came back to klipsch (pre-kids) I really was amazed by their capability to convince me that there was a solo violinist or vocalist in my room. But I totally understand about the dynamics/distortion/naturalness of instrument voicing etc. That's where the maggies left me flat. I've owned Klipsch exclusively for the last 20 some years. I'm sure a huge factor is the room and it sounds as though you have the reflections pretty well rung out!
