  3. I've heard some of these, but not side by side with one exception, and not always in the same room. By fallible auditory memory: Klipschorns vs Hartsfield - Hartsfield did not have as much bass, --- sounded very bass shy, but was very clean. Hartsfield midrange was ultra, ultra clear. Klipschorn was better balanced, and had more impact. Klipschorn vs JBL Paragon - Klipschorns flanking Paragon. Very similar to above comparison, but the Khorn sound stage was much wider, because the Khorns were very far apart. Paragon seemed to have a little more bass than my memory of Hartsfield, but Khorn seemed to go down farther. The Paragon was the usual JBL Paragon -- I don't know what a Everest Paragon is. The JBL Paragon was originally called the Ranger Paragon. I'm tempted to call Ranger the movie sound guy, but he was an innovator in many fields and was one of those who developed magnetic tape recording, based on recorders captured from the Nazis. Ranger applied "radial refraction" principles of diffusion to the Paragon; indeed the front of a Paragon looked like a Bonner Diffusor. The Paragon design is also credited to Arnold Wolf; perhaps they worked together. As PWK might point out, the Paragon might have had better bass if it sat directly on the floor, but then the tweeters would be too far below seated ear level. Klipschorn v.s. Bozak Concert Grand - Bozak had sweet string sound, and wonderful cello reproduction, great bass, good dynamics. It would never (?) give offense. Khorn more dynamic, better brass, equal but different bass, took about 1/5 of the amplifier power according to a Stereo annual I saw, about 1/10, going by other sources. A friend of mine narrowed down his speaker choice to these two, and went back and forth between stores for hours and hours of comparison. He bought the Bozaks, largely because of the string sound. In 1968, in my fantasies, I would have had three Concert Grands in a palatial Haight Ashbury apartment (or house, up the hill), wired in the PWK three channel "Wide Stage Stereo" configuration, and many lovely women would get to listen to it. By the time I got the money (12 years later), Klipschorns began to sound better to me, so I got them. I never regretted the choice, and I have never heard better (of course, I haven't heard the Jubilees). Klipschorns v.s. Altec A7s "Voice of the Theater" (one iteration; those actually used in theaters were usually far bigger). I just thought I'd throw these in, since they are often spoken of in the same breath. These were auditioned across the room from one another, both in corners. Both were "effortless." Both were "airy" compared to other speakers there, certainly more "airy" than the acoustic suspension speakers, like the AR-3A. The Klipsch was brassier, sounded "golden." The Altec tended toward being steely and sounded "silver." O brother, I'm beginning to sound like a writer in a "hi-end" magazine -- sorry. The Khorn had a little more deep bass, maybe, and livelier high frequencies. The Altec advertised response to 22,000 c.p.s. (Hz), but if it had that, it was way, way down (I could hear to 20K back then). Note, a few years later I heard A7s, and other, smaller, Altecs at the recording studio at SFSU, and they sounded better -- maybe they improved -- still no match for the Khorns.

  7. No coffee this morning. Don’t want to interfere with Red Cross double reds donation at 8:15 am. Last time I was rejected due to more than six early beats in a minute. Only time in 50 years I’ve been rejected, at least by the Red Cross. Second day in a row to awaken to snow on the ground. Yesterday’s was probably considered “measurable” (at least 1/10”). Today is merely a dusting.

  9. OK another rare prog recording now spinning Only one release in 1974 on Mushroom 🍄 Records The album as a whole is a keyboard heavy offering - intricate and delicate as it ebbs and flows from one great track to the other Artist - Greg Sneddon Title - Mind Stoll First Pressing Cat# L35356 Found a short Bio on the WWW Greg Sneddon biographyAustralian composer and instrumentalist Greg SNEDDON is a man of which not much is known today, but he has written himself into Australian history books due to one particular event: He assembled a group of backing musicians while he was recording the soundtrack of a musical called "Riff Raff", and following these recording sessions this group of musicians would later eastablish a solid career as Men At Work.Prior to that Sneddon released a single solo album however. "Mind Stroll" was recorded in 1974 and released in 1975. A nice and varied example of keyboard driven, accessible symphonic rock, by some described as similar in style to Australian band Sebastian Hardie

You know those thin little scummy things just a bit larger than a cd, that were supposed to save the planet but ended up making people so cross-eyed they'd lost their sense of direction, wander into traffic right in front of the semi-truck exit from the local oil refinery. The resulting explosion set whole blocks on fire and caused penguins 5000 miles way to grasp for breath. Cd's maybe dead but these little sleevy things live on, and as my eyes age, the little slips of paper can not be picked out from a stacks of cd's. The end result is that while I have a "Squirrel Nut Zippers" cd, I can't find the little fucker to play it. Sure I did run across cardboard sleeve of Raphael Saadiq, which I love and thought lost forever, but it's like finding a 14 cent stamp between two pieces of paper long after stamps were made to last forever. 15. Probably what he said, it's going to be good to see each other again, have fun. It might be a little shocking, you don't feel your age so when you see someone from that long ago they appear much older than you would think, like when you see a pic of an old friend, but your right there with him in age.

  17. Just heard from a good friend from high school. We were inseparable for a couple of years but when we got to college he met a young lady and it was love at first site. Dropped me like a hot potato. Anyway Buddy was very smart about cars and pulled the motor out of my Triumph TR-3A and rebuilt it when he was 18 y/o. He also fixed a problem on the transmission (broken tooth on the cluster gear). Parts were ordered from J.C. Whitney of course and lacking a gasket for the transmission cover he used a spiral note book and a ball peen hammer to make one We were young then and like most of you knew no limits. The confidence of youth...... So fifty years later, he's married to the same lady, retires from a job in IT, joins FB and sends me a message...... meet me at the south inlet of Wrightsville Beach. I'll be there with rod & reel, and a cooler". It will be great to see the old codger

  39. Generally, I agree with this and when it comes to large purchases, I tend to go for quality and products built to last a long time. But I'll tell you why I think the PFs make sense: If I had any quality speaker, RF-7 IIIs for example, there are so many places outside of the RF-7 where you will make the sound worse. You need to power the RF-7s and may get mains noise, if you bi-amp like the PFs' that is two sets of wires and connectors to degrade sound from the amps, both amps have power cords to pick up mains noise, you need to choose the right amps, make sure they work well with each other and the RF7s. Next is inputs, which also have mains cords and cords going to the RF7s and also need to be well matched and EQ'd for the RF7s. Even though the RF7s are higher quality in materials and the PFs may have less expensive materials, but they were at least chosen by Klipsch engineers and everything except the source (computer playing digital files using the PFs "sound card") has been dialed in by klipsch engineers to be the best possible AND all but 1 mains cord is eliminated. I have to think that this accounts for a lot. That's why I need to listen to them this weekend somewhere. My best friend is an audiophile - we were roommates in college when he got the first klipsch i ever heard (I can't remember the model - they look like a smaller version of Fortes, but with only one horn.) and he's heard the R-28PFs and said they sound much better than any R-28F he's heard which lends support to my theory because they should theoretically sound the same. It makes sense that a klipsch engineer is going to get better sound out of it than me, plus the elimination of so many cords and connections. Have you heard the PFs by chance? Do you think my theory makes sense or are those factors not so difficult to overcome? Yeah, I've been thinking about the RF-7s, too. I've never seen that webiste before - looks awesome. I like the product descriptions - they have the info you really want, compared to Amazon and other that are clearly not formatted for us. Have you ordered from them? Are they legit? Is 135W is the smallest amp you would suggest in terms of watts per channel? I might go for one that only handles up to a 5.2 surround because I won't go beyond that and save a few bucks. I like the preouts for add'l amps. My only other concern right now is an EQ of some type. I like knobs from years of DJing and I'm probably going to use a mixer at some point, but I'd like to have an EQ with a remote, too. Getting digital files from various sources makes an EQ essential almost. Do any amps/receivers have decent built in EQs that you know of or do you prefer a separate component - or just go full auto and not think about it?

  43. My big beef with the R-28PF's that you're referencing and the 26's as well has to do with the quality of the parts used. They're not bad, but they're not of the same caliber as the rest of the Klipsch lineups. They're entry level, just designed to put the name out there. They don't have the chutzpah - if you will. So my concern is you're going to get these and not only immediately want to upgrade, but you may find yourself dissatisfied. The R series Reference (those of us who have been around call them Icons or Synergy still) use aluminum tweeters, IMG woofers, have cheaper crossovers and don't use veneer finishes either. Amps with Klipsch go one of two ways, people either really love them or really hate them. I am especially skeptical of the newer gear, simply because the more mass produced gear that its in has weaker QC. As for your setup - it's good that you're open to use and refurbished. You can make some real magic happen for little green by going this route, and I'd encourage you look at Craigslist and even eBay for speakers. You are in the ballpark of a 3.1 setup featuring the RC-7 and RF-7 with your budget - used. You may even score II's at the upper end. For an AVR, I too don't go for the latest and greatest, simply because that's where most of the problems are with new equipment. I suggest a model from Integra which can be had now at a very handsome price on Accessories4Less: https://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/intdtr503/integra-dtr-50.3-7.2-ch-x-135-watts-thx-networking-a/v-receiver/1.html You might opt for a step higher or lower model...this one will give you decent power to all channels, and will at the very least give you a good solid 135 Watts when in stereo. It has preouts in the event you decide you want more power, HDMI for newer components, and has plenty of surround features for you to mess around with. Audessey is a love or hate thing. Most people love it, I hate it. I'd rather let my own ears decide what sounds good, but if that's your thing, it is an option. I have a 40.3 as well as one of their stereo receivers and love them both. I've been slowly moving away from AVR's but the Integra models I have are going to be staying with me for a while. Good EQ and built to handle music very well.

  44. You're better off getting the Reference Premier line for speakers, the R series is just not worth the money, all things considered. There are the WiSA speakers which are wireless ready that you could use if you're concerned about wires, but you'd still have to have them plugged into the wall, not sure it's going to benefit you much. What kind of budget do you have? What are you trying to accomplish? What sources do you plan on using? What ratio of movies and music will you be listening to?
