A friend at Klipsch sent me this. Here is the listing for the La Scala Speakers. https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/auction/2021/from-the-vault-property-from-the-grateful-dead-and-friends/hells-angels-party-stereo-system-including-the Description: Description Property of Steve Parish [Hells Angels] Party stereo system from the Hell’s Angels, a gift from the Grateful Dead to the Club Lot includes: Sansui 4 channel 130 watt receiver in wooden case. — 2 Klipsch La ScalasSpeakers, painted black, with Grateful Dead spray painted in green, “Support Your Local Hells Angels” sticker, handles on sides. — 2 Hard Truckers D140 Speaker Cabinets, wood, birch plywood, heavy aluminum brackets, one with “Support Your Local Hells Angels” sticker and “Dead” in felt-tip on back. A gift from from Jerry’s mom, including the earliest Grateful Dead speakers, later given by the band to the Hells Angels Clubhouse "Big" Steve Parish: “The Klipsch speakers were purchased by Jerry’s mother for the first small PA used by the Grateful Dead, 1966/67, then stored in our warehouse until the early 70’s , when Jerry asked us, as a gesture of friendship, to gift them to the Richmond Hells Angels for a music system for their clubhouse. The 2 black Kllipsch plus the mid range speakers that the crew built and powered by the Sansui amp were used at the Richmond clubhouse from 1973 to 2019. We present this historical small PA with a great history.” The present was the party sound system for the Hells Angels in their Richmond, CA, clubhouse for years, and contains what is likely the earliest surviving Grateful Dead speakers. Other lots in this Auction have Owl's amps, McIntosh amps apparently from the Wall of Sound, etc. Travis2 points

@Westcoastdrums hurry up and buy those! I've spent the last two days sitting here trying to figure out just WHERE I'd put them here! They have to sound great and would look great too! Geez...2 points

? I use postimage for pics since I first filled up my allotted space here. Can you right click & then open link in new tab? or copy address and then paste? Or it could be a political boundary we are seeing more and more of.2 points

Are you running analog output from the laptop to your amp? A small external dac like a Dragonfly would be far better.2 points

Funny @NADman some of those are true. Lightning started popping all around here a while ago and I shut things down. Cool enough lately I don't really need the ac, but I'll put it back on in a few to help lower the darn humidity. It's not raining right this minute but we have not dried out the puddles between storms and rain since Monday here.2 points

I don't know. : ) I do know about the original product from Aphex called the Aural Exciter, and the Bellari gizmo is likely a simple distillation of it. Don't read past this point if you value your time or sanity. : ) Background The WWII battleships were some of the loudest places on earth occupied by people and they had a terrible time communicating with the crew. Thus they trained the heck out of them to minimize the need, but the need to communicate changes in the theater of action was still there. Sound system power was quite limited at the time, but they found that if they pushed the system pretty hard into distortion (10%+ 3rd harmonic), they could get the equivalent of about 10dB+ louder communication ability without additional voltage from the amplifier or excursion from the compression drivers in those reentrant horns. The clipping amplified the consonants in speech aurally (perception), and it is the consonants that provide understanding (articulation) in speech. It wouldn't be until the 70's that Peutz would develop a speech intelligibility metric he called the Articulation Loss of Consonants (ALCons), but the major ground work had been laid during the war. So. We learned we could make huge apparent increases in communication based power without actual increases in electrical or acoustic power. Radio and the Loudness War The 80's saw a distinct change in the way music was broadcast over FM. Whereas the earlier decades of radio worked from fairly fixed definitions in broadcast technology and end-user reproduction systems, the 80's saw wild advances in both domains. While the earlier decades had to compete based on content, the 80's had the advantage (?) of maturing processing capabilities that the Beatles pretty much started in the 60's with multitrack and large scale concerts. Thus compression and hard limiting was used by radio to increase the apparent loudness of their transmission, but this initially brought complaints from both record producers and end users. A smart guy at Aphex used the clues in Peutz's work and started clipping audio on purpose and found a range of adding distortion that mimicked the natural harmonics of the bass and midrange in such as way that it highlighted them without actually increasing electrical power dissipation. Thus we tend to perceive more bass and vocal output/clarity even though the actual volume is unchanged. This is exactly what 80's radio wanted because it subjectively offset the heavy handed early compression dullness by "restoring" the liveness of the sound and (perceptually) making it even louder! Of course recording studios applied it to vinyl and tape reproduction formats as both have the same hard limits as radio transmission. Concert sound began experimenting with it as an effect even though they weren't faced with the same headroom limitations. It's in use today via plug-in's in digital recording and concert production, though Aphex still offers the rack mount version. Dave Levine (aka Rat) used it for the Chili Peppers* - he's one of the last of a dying breed that still mixes on analog consoles with outboard racks. 2021 What's old is new again. God bless you and your precious family - Langston * Dave became the first and only (AFAIK) FOH engineer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers decades ago when he rented a modest concert system to them in a small venue before they were known. The bassist (Flea) stripped naked during the show and spray painted the mic stands and a bunch of Dave's other stuff yellow! Afterwards, a very not-rich Dave pleads to the group that he can't afford to fix/replace the stuff and the group paid for all the damage. They fell in love with each other that night and have stuck together since then.2 points

I had an NR1605 for 5+ years and liked it a lot. I only recently upgraded to an SR8015 because I wanted to do away with my monoblock amplifiers (not that La Scalas need a lot of power). The only thing I didn't like is that it only had pre-outs for the L/R channels. If it had pre-outs for all channels, or at least the front three channels, I might have just picked up a 3-channel amp. The slim Marantz don't seem to run as hot as the bigger receivers. I had to put an AC Infinity on top of my new Marantz... Slim model did not need it. Fun fact, I found that my Marantz NR1605, 2x Outlaw 2200 amps, and a Bash 300 (connected to my sub) used less power than just my SR8015 plugged in by itself.1 point

I was quite surprised at the difference closing the drapes made in the sound in the room. The change was substantial and positive. The music seemed both closer and warmer. Thanks for asking about it. I wouldn't have thought to try that without being prompted by your question.1 point

Can it not be hardwired so to speak that text automatically comes across into a garage sale posting that has rules about thread crapping and price discussions in a negative light? Seems to be a thing over and over and over. Wouldnt it save you and others a lot of time @dwilawyer? Yes, we all know a vintage pair of LA scalas for 5k isn't even in the ballpark. Let some people dream. That's fine. PM them and throw them an offer with your number if you are a buyer. The thing that can be irritating in particular is that the negative comments on pricing are usually from those that have no intention of purchasing the gear to begin with. End of short rant for now.1 point

Enough about hints and modifications. This is a Garage Sale thread so let's get back to the classified ad (please remember to be respectful and do not pollute a Garage Sale thread with off-topic stuff - you can always start your own thread in the Technical / Modifications section) So Gentlemen, you have a choice in life. You can either enjoy the finer things in life like my friend here and get some Jubilees. Notice that he is suave, debonair and the man about town (and a hit with the ladies) Or you can fail to get Jubilees and end up like this fellow - living in his Mother's basement and taking care of her 17 cats The choice is yours EDIT: upon further research, I conducted a seance last night (induced by the Pinot Noir that the Women's Volleyball Team from UCONN had gifted me). During that ceremony we channelled the spirit of Paul Klipsch. His spirit, from the beyond, told us It really was remarkable, but it did not stop there. His next words were direct and profound. He said: "I think insert your name here must buy Tom's Jubilee speakers" Forgive the irreverence, but selling Jubilees is never an easy thing to do. I will be moving and homes by the water (my dream) are small and the extra money for extra square footage would be outrageous.1 point
