  1. Sorry for being away for awhile, stuff. I took to heart the advice given in my thread asking for help. I looked at so much information, videos, reviews etc. Until m e brain hurt. I decided that I was going to do this once and done. The price range is from $150 to $5k and more. Everything from China DIY to boutique units with twice the snake oil of $5k RCA interconnect cables. How to choose? I went with a company that has been making ultrasonic cleaners for many decades, they make and sell over a million cleaners a year for medical, industrial and personal use. They developed a cleaner just for LPs, it can clean up to 10 at a time in 45, 10 and 12 inch formats then spin them dry.. That company is Isonic. The unit I went with is the https://isonicinc.com/products/cs6-2-pro-isonic®-motorized-ultrasonic-vinyl-record-cleaner-for-10-records-with-filter-and-spin-drying-2x-ultrasonic-powerful-than-cs6-1-pro?_pos=3&_sid=7525c2758&_ss=r&variant=47413687222555 And I purchased the drain tank to go with it. https://isonicinc.com/products/psr01a-isonic®-pump-station-with-reservoir-and-filter-for-p4875ii-mvr10-pro-or-cs6-1-pro?_pos=1&_sid=7525c2758&_ss=r I am very pleased with the results. I have thrown my worst at it and they came out sparkling clean. This includes one LP that had mold growing on it. I dusted it off with a carbon fiber brush and into the cleaner with 9 other LPS. When it came out and was dry I put it on the TT, shot it with Zerostat because I could and dropped the needle. It sounded better than a new record. OK, I am impressed. It wasn't inexpensive but it is built like a tank and it does an excellent job. I have it setup on a spare equipment rack I had in the listening room and thats where it will stay. It isn't silent in operation but it isn't bad either. Fan and motors are the loudest things and a moderate level on the stereo will all but cover most of the sound it makes. Thanks for the guidance!

  3. Many used sealed or ported subs with their Klipsch horn loaded speakers. @dtr20 is not the lone ranger. Ideal ? Maybe not. Workable? Yes. Especially with the powerful DSP he has at his disposal. In sheer output the SVS sub will get over powered by the Jubes but at what level? Maybe dtr20 does not need that high a level.

  4. Ya, everybody knows that a 1960's PA speaker would trounce a 1970's studio monitor. 🤫 1963: The La Scala is designed as a portable version of the Klipschorn to be used as a P.A. system for Winthrop Rockefeller's Arkansas gubernatorial campaign.

  5. Hello Paul and friends! Hope you are staying dry, cool or warm depending on where you are. Here in the NE, slushy snow on the ground, temps have gone from single numbers to 40 degrees F. and will be higher with rain over the next few days.. Needless to say, foggy day here! Anyway, I fell in love with the silicone mat I picked up some time ago for the REGA P6 table, so I ordered a second one for the U-Turn and that just arrived. Here is a photo just taken. I will spin some vinyl on it soon. But right now, waiting for my Amazon delivery of some special capacitors for my newest speaker/ crossover restoration. More photos to share in a bit. Enjoy the music !

  6. ^^CLASSIC^^ and an all time fave of mine too! To go with that ISP that's known to raise prices often and always lower your speeds after a couple months in? Nein, nyet, nada, NO! * wow my browser showed I was right after that `82 version of "Ramblin' Man" But there's plenty more after that!

  8. It was really an attempt at sarcasm to Double 0 One, I do believe the 604s were used in many recording studios... "The 604 series was considered the de facto monitor for most North American and European recording studios throughout the ‘50s, '60s into the ‘70s, including Abbey Road/EMI, Apple Records, American Sound Studio in Memphis and A&R in New York to name but a few." My best friend from college picked up a pair of Model 19s used in the early 1980's and they are still in his main system to this day. They are the speaker that showed me what a hi efficiency speaker, and horns in particular, could do. I believe the 19 is a great speaker and would be appreciated by most horn lovers. I have LSs and Peavey Jubs, Heresy 3s, and HIPs... so you know I like my Klipsch. But if I had a spot for a pair of those Altecs...

  11. I was awaiting my new caps, and probably because of the floods etc. in the south, my latest tracking showed a delay from today to SUNDAY! So, sadly, the speaker project will be on hold for a bit longer. Just took these two photos as they sit on my kitchen island. These are the SuperScope S-212 from 1974 made in California, which are really in very nice shape all around considering they are 50 years old! My next featured play will be a TRIO of Linda Ronstadts Nelson Riddle arrangement recordings, probably on Sunday after these gems get the crossover caps installed . Lower photo shows the crossover with it's large axial cap sitting in it's metal holder. They will stay in place, and the new ones will be installed and ty-wrapped to them to keep things original.

  12. I have not used a horn loaded sub. I've never experienced one. This SB16-Ultra fell in my lap for less than half price new and it's been working/sounding great. Like I said, I needed to change how it was wired and configured because of going to a new preamp. I either need lessons in xconsole or someone to help with the dsp on the SVS.

  13. Me three! And reading more about the one viable ISP that will provide to my address? Wouldn't touch`em with a ten foot pole! (great tune!) I'll pay the $15 extra for the cell phone to tether from. Then next month go with starlink and their big startup costs. I'll be able to lower my cell bill by $45 a month then. Since I'm here for the duration it'll all pan out, I could not deal with another spec um clone outfit!!

  16. Although I have never ABed them, I have read a lot about the Altec 19 vs Klipsch's offerings. The earlier Cornwall didn't have a large enough horn to compete with the 19, BUT I'd like to hear the new Cornwall vs the 19. The LaScala didn't dig as deep as the 19, but still, some liked the LaScala better. The real battle was when the Khorn vs the 19 were pitted against one another. Both were top-shelf offerings from each company for domestic use. A lot of good reading out there with points for each side. IIRC, the Khorn digs deeper and has great sound. The 19 are not so placement-sensitive and come ready to rumble. At the end of it all, when the Khorn is placed properly in the corners of a large room, they smoke the Altec 19. The speakers I always wanted to pit against my Khorns are the Electro Voice Sentry III.

  21. Gotta thank @Full Range for this post. It's story time! The two-hour drive to Detroit just to hit the "Roostertail" for teen days was almost weekly for me as most everyone knows. I started into Motown since I'm ancient. Just a few "white" kids in a predominantly "black" club havin fun catchin a groove w/ALL the artists of that era. It wasn't anything like things are at some places today. I'll just stop there with that thought. When I picked up "Sixto" Rodriguez's "Cold Facts" lp that Paul mentioned and then someone mentioned maybe Marvel his history. A bell went off when I searched him out. A group of kids I knew were talking about this dude who was BETTER than Bob Dylan who just lived down the street. I totally blew that off cause NO one was better than Dylan. Little did I know. Sooo, if you don't have his "Cold Fact" lp I highly recommend adding it before they're gone. I did another thing too. I picked up another of his before it's gone. It's VERY different from "Cold Facts" as his lyrics and presentation are featured imore n the final mix. Sad that he's gone now and his lp's are breaking out all over. Paying back now for what a lot of us missed by listening to Dylan. Yea you really do need both to complete "yourself" if you're anything like me. Thank me later! BOTH are 5-star from me.

  22. Nice lil double JJ Cale "The Silvertone Years" lp from Music on Vinyl #372 of 1500. If ya like JJ Cale this is one h3ll of an album. If ya don't really know his backstory ya might wanna check him out. My advice if ya want a RIDE don't waste anytime and snag it while ya can! He's special and this double lp is worth every penny. Pricey but KILLER!! ! John Weldon "J. J." Cale[1] (December 5, 1938 – July 26, 2013) was an American guitarist, singer, and songwriter. Though he avoided the limelight,[2] his influence as a musical artist has been acknowledged by figures such as Mark Knopfler, Neil Young, Waylon Jennings, and Eric Clapton, who described him as one of the most important artists in rock history.[3] He is one of the originators of the Tulsa sound, a loose genre drawing on blues, rockabilly, country, and jazz. It's kind of ironic. When Andrew Lauder of Silvertone said he'd like to put out some tapes, I just got a bunch together and they put 'em out as an album. It wasn't till I got to listening to the album that I noticed that I'd written a bunch of tunes in the last four or five years about towns, and places, and travellin' around. Another great one gone too soon!

  23. Time to unzip a few! Gotta get outta this "waitin on the plumber" state of mind. No problemo on this Richard Wright "Wet Dreams" remix/master by Steve Wilson here @Full Range. Tight, clean, open and just sounds amazing. Crazy good lp. Wet Dream is the debut solo album by Pink Floyd keyboardist Richard Wright, released in 1978. Wet Dream was self-produced and Wright wrote all the songs himself, except "Pink's Song", which was co-written with his then-wife, Juliette, who, as Juliette Gale, had provided vocals to a pre-Pink Floyd song "Walk with Me Sydney". Wet Dream was recorded at Super Bear Studios, Alpes-Maritimes, in early 1978,[2] the same studio where bandmate David Gilmour would record his eponymous solo album just weeks after the recording of Wet Dream. Wilson's work has totally opened this lp up from the original pressing. Crazy good and just keeps getting better.

  26. Agree with @JohnA that putting "damping" material around the K-700 did not produce a noticeable change, and I've tried multiple types of material. Having said that, I think it did not decrease SQ and the cost was negligible. WRT the caps. There has been and will continue to be enough discussion around caps to fill the Internet. I offer simply from the OEM site "All Jantzen Z-caps are nitrogen filled, which means that you get more foil per capacitor and no risk of the evaporation that can occur in oil/dielectric fluid filled capacitors." Ok, well yes it's nice to not worry about evaporation or leakage of liquid. I selected those caps after much reading on University of Google. Some know of a site that does qualitative listening and commentary. That site/owners/commentators have been called some names I don't appreciate and I doubt they would either. They simply provide their impression of the sound from various caps, what you as the consumer of such information do with it is entirely up to you. For me their site provided a starting point in comparison of capacitors with a relative impression of SQ produced and subsequent continue investigation on my part for those which fit my budget and were available. WRT the word "upgraded". The forum has requested we not use that word or "updated". I simply say, changed. The other components are quality components within again a budget, eg I did not pay for someone to hand wind an air core inductor or to use precious metal foil. I purposefully did not change the scheme employed, I believe PWK created the design with significantly more capability than I have. I was attempting to return the speakers to a sound I "remembered", and compare them to other changed speakers with crossovers that have significant schematic alterations. Each has its place. The final arbiter of the word "upgraded" are the ears of the owner, @Pak323 although I believe he said these are his first of this type of speaker. I wish him much enjoyment and success in his plans to change the cabinet finish and perhaps I'll catch up to him one day and see his handy work. MC p.S. More fuel for debate club… when I sold the speakers they included 4 post homemade stands that put the squeaker at my ear height in my listening chair. The design was so a small, closed, front firing sub woofer could be placed in the bottom. Maybe not optimal from a SQ perspective but definitely helpful with WAF. I’ve tried tilting speakers, not with nice stands but just simply and did not like the result. There are good threads on the forum discussing the relative merits of various stands and indeed no stands. I hope @Pak323 can use the stands for something if not as the intended speaker stands.

  27. the Altec Model 19 cant be compared to a Lascala -Khorn or even a Cornwall , it was basically a large 70's studio monitor with veneer and grilles A fine example of the condescending remark telling others what they can or can't do. Your statement about the Altec 19 diminishes your credibility. Do you remember what someone said to you about getting more bees with honey in the LaScala resonance thread?

  34. Yep. According to some in this forum you should only pair your heritage speakers with an 80s 5 channel receiver, zip cord speaker cables, throw away interconnects, and a Best Buy dvd player (open box model of course) if you want the best results. Advice you most certainly should heed….

  36. Hi there I am just not sure if I have the correct settings for two channel on my PS3 when listening to CD's.This is what I am using Rotel Power Amp, Yamaha RX-V667, PS3, Front stage, RF35, RW12 and RC7 and RS35 surrounds. All speakers are set to small and ps3 connecting to AVR through HDMI. PS3 I have adjusted the settings to 2ch PCM 176.4Khz and changed the CD sound on PS3 from 48K to 44.1K. Is this ok? (I am really clueless when it comes to this)With these settings I am very happy with the sound when playing in Pure Direct mode, though in this mode I have no Sub, though in saying this I seem to be getting good bass from the RF35's.Then in 2Ch stereo mode i seem to be getting good sound and sub but i personally prefer the pure direct mode over the 2 channel mode, in 2 channel mode i seem to be loosing volume compared to pure direct.I suppose my quesion is, does my settings look right on the ps3. or do I need to adjust more. I also have the latest firmware updates on PS3.

  37. Would changing the hz(on the ps3) make cds sound different? well i am not too sure as I changed a few settings, not just the hz to 44.1. and really i am clueless when it comes to these things, though right now my 2ch listening has never sounded better to me.

  47. Haha, that may be true (the 6 DB claim) - who knows. I just stuck 'em in there and left 'em. I manage the volume of both amps seperately - the left and right speakers are managed by the 299c, and the center channel is managed by the 99D (they're independent of each other...?) Thanks for all the help so far!
