Wolfbane
Fidel, in spite of exploding cigars is dead at 90. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-38114953
wvu80
Dead? I didn't even know he was alive. There must be some reason the US would not have normal relations with Cuba for 55 years. Now that Fidel is dead maybe some of the secrets can be revealed.

Yes, and I don't think it was a secret.

oldtimer
When he was recovering from surgery. The official handoff was 2008. Things must have really sucked back then for Castro to be able to rise to power. Desperate people do desperate things, and it often doesn't turn out any better. teknoid
Some here may disagree but in my opinion good riddance to a fundamentally evil SOB. I grew up in the days of the "Cuban Missile Crisis" and watched my father pack his things as an Air Force Reserve member preparing to go to war with Cuba and the USSR. Yes... There is much to be said for Castro's socialist regime in terms of making the lives of the Cuban people a bit better but none of that cancels out the brutality meted out upon his opponents. No matter how you slice it a dictatorship is a dictatorship. It doesn't matter if Fidel Castro or Raul Castro is in charge it's still a dictatorship. Until the people of Cuba can freely elect who they want to be in control of their country they will always be under the control of Socialists, or Communists, or Marxists. Rant off... Until the people of Cuba can freely elect who they want to be in control of their country they will always be under the control of Socialists, or Communists, or Marxists Absolutely a dictatorship is a dictatorship. Socialist, communist, or Marxist is just another name for dictatorship. Any ideals of any of the aforementioned have always been subjugated to the whims of the dictator. Fascism is not the opposite of these either, because they are also dictatorships. What's the difference between a monarchy and a dictatorship? Nothing. Most dictatorships have a nepotism quality, and this is seen in Cuba. Just as monarchies are by definition nepotistic. Guess who in central America freely elected who they wanted, yet our beloved country of freedom lovers actively supported a revolution against? oldtimer
BTW, what form of government did Cuba have before Castro? Who was Batista? Cuban dictator? LOL. when did the Cuban people ever have a freely elected government? Oh! It was different then because Batista was OUR dictator. Corporate and mafia friend Mr Batista. Cry me a river of cesspool island politics. So---"until the people of cuba can freely elect who they want to be in control of their country they will always be under the control of Socialists, Communists, or Marxists" doesn't ring true, since before that they were under the control of a dictator anyway.
