  1. What an incredible first day hanging out with my bro Shaun. I want to journal throughout my 4 day stay with Shaun and his precious family. We spent about 5hrs yesterday in his HT hanging out, watching movie demos and listening to music. I'm really excited to share his setup with everyone. I spent 2 hrs this morning taking photos of his room using his Canon 60D (would have been quicker if I had my Nikon D7000 with me) and will be sharing those photos later this afternoon along with my thoughts on what it is like to experience his HT. WAKEJUNKIE'S PROGRESS: As many of you know, Shaun is 36 years old and my best friend. Our friendship started 12 years ago when our family moved to Alabama for a Full-Time Youth Ministry (Youthman) position in Alabama. He began volunteering in the student ministry and we began to develop an incredible friendship. I consider him as a brother so I wanted to come up to visit for a few days. Shaun is doing AMAZING considering what he has been through with the strokes. He and his wife picked me up from the airport and after we grabbed my bag, he staggered and I asked, "Walk much?" to which he quickly replied..."Well not until recently". Just 3 weeks ago he was able to walk without a walker. The strokes effected his equilibrium and his fine motor skills so his balance gets off and he tends to get dizzy and nauseous especially riding in a car. He went to a Specialist in Tennessee and he was very optimistic that Shaun will eventually be able to return to most of his active lifestyle but things like roller coasters and chiropractor will always be out of the question. He is clear to go back to work on Monday. Before he begins working on my front wall, he wanted to assess his capabilities and assess where he is at with his woodworking abilities. So excitedly, he headed to his workshop. His family are big Harry Potter fans so he decided to ended build an Elder Wand out of some scrap walnut wood using a table saw, belt sander and a Dremel and welded The Deathly Hallows out of some metal he had lying around. The guy has more talent after having 3 strokes than I have without. He found it was difficult using the dremel to make the notches in the wand due to the requirement of fine motor skills but even with this project, he found the more he did it, the better his coordination got. I alone with Shaun and his family are truly grateful for this community as many of you have expressed your concern, thoughts and prayers for Shaun. He has come a long way in a very short time which is pretty amazing.

  2. Is there anything better than being off work on Friday? I'm sure there is but this ranks right up there. Got to have 3 cups this morning to get my day going. Thought I'd drop by and see what all you knuckleheads were doing. Looks like same old, same old..........love it. Love the adios sign also. I have a few projects to do while I'm waiting on my new driver for my Lil Wrecker project. One is outside and one is in the attic. It's 38 outside now. Maybe I'll run to the bank instead while I'm waiting on God to turn on the solar heater. Check in later.

  3. As of 1240 PM today, I am officially a Fusion owner. As some of you remember, my first Emotiva purchase was a couple of weeks ago when I landed a sweet deal on an XDA-2. Prior to that, I had also gotten a great deal on a Fusion 8100 - but would need to be patient as it was in for repair. The waiting finally paid off today. Safe for a few minor heart attacks related to my own stupidity and rushing of getting it setup - things worked like a charm. It sounds brilliant, puts out some killer sound, and handles HDMI switching with a good amount of ease. I have not yet tested anything outside of it's PLIIx and stereo (also direct) modes, but I plan on toying with those sometime soon. My RX-V2500 has been moved off to the side as Mix-Out duty for my two RB-3's...it will eventually get replaced by a Sherbourn 4Z-75 amp. My heart attacks came from some poor management of devices on my part. The first issue that came up with a steady popping in the speakers (all of them) when no audio was playing through my computer. I tested multiple cables, and different inputs - all with the same result on the computer. However, if I used my Blu-Ray Player, none of that noise was heard. When putting audio through the HDMI though, there was no popping noise. It's only when there's no audio going through the card on the computer. That shouldn't be a big deal now that I have a device that will effectively handle HDMI codecs though and can be used via the Blu-Ray player. Not to mention the DAC... The second heart attack. For some reason or another, my computer was not finding the DAC after the Fusion showed up. I tried unplugging it at the computer, and back in. I tried rebooting the computer, the XDA...with no results. Finally, I decided to unplug and reconnect the USB at the back of the XDA.......only to find that I never plugged it in in the first place....wow. As it stands right now, I'm chilling to some Jeff Lorber Fusion ("Chinese Medicinal Herbs" for those who wonder) and am gonna sit back and chill to some good tunes for the rest of the evening. Obligatory photos - pardon my wires...I'm replacing the back fabric on this stand:

  4. When I turned 18, my roommates took me to a local bar. I had never drank in high school so I was naïve at best. They started buying shots of 151. They lit theirs and told me I was not yet "experienced" enough to do that. Of course they were burning the alcohol off their drinks. After 6 or 7 in a short time I was beyond help. I walked up to a girl, spun her around and kissed her. After that, all I remember is a blur coming at my face. She slapped me and knocked me out. My roommates picked me up and carried me back to my room. I woke up a day latter in a pile of puke. I was sick for four days. I NEVER DRANK 151 AGAIN. My roommates told me the girl was screaming, "I killed him, oh god, I killed him." For four days I wished she had.

  6. Driving home late last night from work, I saw a sign in the distance. I know it is more nostalgic at this point and I only seemed to go for those emergency DIY items to finish an amp; however, it seemed to somehow signal the end to an era.

  7. Really, just look at me, I'm lucky just to moderate myself. Ok so you know you have a coffee problem when your sitting next to a wine glass and a coffee cup, both full. A lady friend of my wife gave us a bottle of wine for hosting a party about a month ago and we just opened it, I am not really a wine drinker but it's really good, Cascinetta Vietti, Moscato d'asti.......whatever that is ? I really like it considering I don't like dry wines, this is good, and now gone. Back to coffee

  10. Looks like I'm a bit late getting in on this thread, more like a blanket than a thread! 336 pages, Jez! So yeah being off work Friday and Monday rank quite high; I retired in Nov. which ranks highest. Kept busy nearly every day with home projects that were put off and off and off. Now no hurry to get them done and have them lined up and some finished. Upstairs/ hallways painted - finished. Re-grout shower/ new shower doors - finished. Now working on a freshening of the finished basement worthy of my new KHorns. About half way complete. I'll post somes pics when ready. And amongst this are 3-4 mile daily walks when weather allows and riding my MC's whenever possible. My two drugs - hifi and bikes. Coffee - all day, every day. French press most often, older GE percolater on the weekend and a Bialetti expresso maker for a quick launch. An in-expensive, stove top maker that's really slick and brews a damn nice 1/2 cup or so. Well back to work, getting ready to shampoo the carpet, then install new baseboards and assemble new equipment rack.

  12. Man, we'd settle for 42 and sunny. All sorts of snow with more to come and a high in the 20's. I suppose it's a small price to pay for living where we live. Baxter and I plan on hibernating until we join up with some friends this evening. Just too damn cold for these old bones. Maybe play some tunes on the B and grab a movie. Enjoy your Friday guys.

  13. Morning guys. Getting ready to roll out, I'll take the 2nd cup to go. Got to work on my trailer tomorrow, driving up to PA to pick up a Wheelhorse tractor. This one will be for parts. Yea the closing of the Shack is sad. They did help out when I was in a pinch. But the sales people they had........most of them were some real tools. There was one time I was looking for some connectors......the sales guy had to know what I was doing.....he had to know what equipment I had........so I rattled off my gear.............the response was....."ahhhh Klipsch, I never herd of those"...what a tool. Ok gang, I'll check in later MKP :-)

  14. I was on the phone with scrappy last night for an hour taking and I started laughing because I had the same problem. My wife and I watched inception at nearly -10 db and I decided to bump up the JTRs 6db just for the fun of the loud soundstaged film. Now our theater is on the fourth floor in a dedicated room treated very well and when we finished we came downstairs where the master bedroom is and my wife said "mike look what your speakers did" and all the shampoo and conditioner bottles were laying in the floor of the shower and the lamps ok our bed stands had moved 6" lol I think I took pictures I was so proud!

  22. I'm well aware of how kick drums to the chest feels and enjoy it quite a bit, but that doesn't seem to be how most audiophiles listen to stuff, many tend to match the volume with that of a live UNAMPLIFIED performance and even if they have a sub they go to great lengths to make sure you never know it's there. No reason why headphones can't do this if that's how you listen to stuff. If you're a fan of shaking the house with subs then yeah I understand completely, but that doesn't seem to usually be the case with serious listeners. I run DBB bass bins like Mark 1101's. There is no need for a sub. But I do understand what you say. Too many 2-channel listeners misuse Subs. They should be used as a seamless fill and not dominate.... just to shake the walls. Very few subs sound musical to me in the home system. Music is more demanding than say a gas truck exploding. Big 2-channel systems are like owning a hot sport car to me. Not always, but there are times that ya just gotsta to punch it! sorry for any hijack Mike

  23. I'm at the airport headed to see Wakejunkie in Alabama for a few days. After his three strokes, I'm grateful to be able to hang out with my bro. I'm departing in jeans and a tshirt in 70 degree weather to arrive in Alabama with a high today of 33 degree weather and snow on the ground. Lol I shipped the Onkyo TX-NR1008 to him on Monday. Was supposed to arrive yesterday but was delayed due to the 6" of snow they received yesterday. He can't pick it up so I guess it's cool. Just hoping fedex is running today. It's supposed to begin warming up some today so we will see. For most of the time, we will be hanging out in the HT, testing and demoing. I'm very excited to hear how his dual 18" IB subs compare to my dual RSW-15. I know there will be no comparison as I am not causing large picture frames to come crashing down onto the floor during heavy bass sequences. I'm also looking forward to hearing his custom RC-7ii for the first time. He took parts from an RF-7ii center and built a custom enclosure for it. Lastly, I'm anxious to hear how original RF7ii sound. I'm curious if my ears prefer the brighter sounding stock RF-7ii or the refined sound of the RF7ii w/DeanG crossovers. Will be posting my thoughts throughout the next few days.

  28. All this talk about noisy vinyl makes me want to make a point. Surface noise on all records varies to degrees. Some are very quiet, some very noisy. Most are somewhere in between. Certainly I would love to have "digital quiet" vinyl pressings. Unfortunately, most of my collection is far from it. So I have learned to focus on the music and ignore the ticks and pops. The sad reality is that not all people can do that. I had a friend who spent several thousands of dollars on a TT, phono stage and few records. I think he kept everything a couple of months before he finally gave up and dumped it all. He just couldn't get past the noise, no matter how much the sound thrashed his digital rig. So the bottom line is that no matter how good the sonics, some people just won't put up with any residual noise. There may be a lot of you reading this post right now, you know who you are. No shame in it, it's just not for everyone. I, for one, will continue to enjoy my records. And every time I upgrade something in the vinyl chain, or further fine tune my rig, I get a big grin. Shakey

  30. I’m not defending Chad’s decision to initiate the change (which i didn’t like at all) nor his attitude (which i didn’t care for either) … I just think ratting someone out is worse. This forum is entertainment for us -- it’s Chad’s job; and i’m against messing with a man’s career over something silly like this. Where I will defend Chad is that he asked for time -- whoever emailed his boss wasn’t even willing to give the man that. (apparently … as it sounds like it wasn’t a complimentary email, so i’m guessing it was a complaint). I generally come down on the side of the members and did so earlier in this thread, and i find the camaraderie more important, more enjoyable than the tech talk. But, we have to keep in mind that, like it or not, this forum doesn’t belong to the members. We’re like visitors, free to come and go as we please. I will admit, I’ve been moving closer to the door for a couple of months and no matter what finally makes me decide to say goodbye to this place--I’ll just go quietly.

  32. welcome. i have a few unanswered questions posted on this & another recent thread. answer away if you wish to. whats best to clean oiled finishes with? whats products do you use for maint & minor restore? what is best to use on a laquer finish? any other suggestions im sure others can use. Well, to be honest oil finishes dont need cleaning as there is not much of a finish to clean. Oil finishes dont build up enough of a coating to need cleaning. They can however benefit from recoating. I read here that some use an Olive oil and this is not a good idea for a few reasons. Olive oil will go rancid...it will attract pests because of the odor they leave behind...it really has no drying agents in it unlike some of the oils that are formulated for wood finishing. Bolied Linseed oil is not the greatest either. Oils that will work on wood are Watco..Old English.. and the "food safe " oil ; Mineral oil. Keep in mind that oil finishes will not create a "build" so it might take a few coats. These types of finishes seep into the pores and if applied correctly, can offer decent protection....If someone would like detailed directions to REALLY rejuvinate an oil finish just ask. The above post is rather basic and will work for most applications . To restore an Oak cabinet that might suffer from a few scratches ( not real deep gouges but minor scratches ) the Old English does a pretty good job. The darker colored Oak Ive seen on some Klipsch case work would benefit from the Dark Old English as it will color the scratch and also offer up some protection to the wood. Again...oils dont build up, so a few coats might be in order. If you have a deep scratch there are wax sticks you can buy at a Home Depot type of store. They come in a few different colors too. In a pinch you could use a Crayola which matches the wood color. A trick old timers used to use ( maybe some still do ) is a Walnut or a Pecan. Rub it briskley into the dent. The oils in the nuts and the meat of the nuts fill and color the void all at once. Obviously if Fido has chewed the corner this wont really work but in a pinch it does a decent job. When working with any oil finish, remember to soak the rags in water as they can combust. Cleaning a Lacquer coating ( not stripping but cleaning ) can be done with either Paint Thinner or Naptha. Neither of those solvents will attack the Lacquer. Dont use Acetone or Lacquer Thinner or any "hot" solvent as it will make a mess of the coating. If you have to clean fingerprints a cotton rag moistened with water and Ivory soap will work just fine. Ive seen a few, Super High Gloss coatings on speaker cabinets and most likely they are a Polyester or CV coating. They can also be cleaned with P/T or Naptha. These need a professionals touch should they become scratched and unless someone is skilled and has the proper materials to proceed with a touch-up, Id stay clear of this type of repair. Hope this information has been of help.

  37. On an unrelated note, I sold my house! Close on Apr 10. After 19 years in a too-small house I'm moving to a too-big house. My wife's mother and father think we are nuts. They aren't making the note though, so they get no say. The room the Khorns are in now is about 15x10 with 8' ceilings and bad corners. They are moving into a 'great' room that is 20x16 and is part of an open floor plan that includes a 16x16 kitchen and a 16x11 nook. All 9' foot ceilings. I'm so excited about getting those speakers into their new corners that I almost can't stand it.

  39. Under most circumstances I would agree with you 100%. In this case, the Onkyo TX-NR5008 is a 55LBS beast that will not even break a sweat with Michael's LaScala trio and RS-62's. My buddy is running a 5008 with a full RF-7 rig in a room(18'W x 27'L x 8'H) with an open stairwell, that is larger than Youthman's theater room and it never seems to run out of steam with very dynamic action movies. He is also running a single RSW15 and it definitely isn't bass shy either. Keep this in mind, these comments are coming from an outboard amp kind of guy. Bill

I for one have bought things here well below eBay prices, and I have turned around and offered guys stuff I knew I could get more for on eBay, but I feel special about this place and long term members! It actually kinda pisses me off when I see people come here as a member and try to ask top dollar or even more than the going rate! 43. Chad I will say attempting to navigate the recent activity tab to the right is way more convoluted. I am sure there is a way to figure it out. I still dont see the purpose for this change to the system that was in place and seemed to work fine (change for the sake of change is pointless) I understand you have the authority to run the forum as you see fit. I also understand without the people on this forum there would be no forum, In my tenure I have seen and helped countless new patrons with there Klipsch questions all while all sub forums were treated equally when it came to showing the recent content. If a subject concerning audio is interesting enough it will stay on the recent activity without any intervention If I were forced to set my favorites to direct me straight to a sub forum then it becomes apparent to me that I will miss some other activity and possibly the opportunity to help with audio / Klipsch related questions Since this is only an experiment EGO should have no place in the discussion. Not an accusation but frankly some of you responses have sounded quite egotistical, The minute this forum takes the route of many other totalitarian forums I fear the demographic will change we will all loose a loved and trusted site I will be further frank here and say the reason I visit this forum is the people, I love the product and would recommend them to anyone in the market, and will brag to anyone that happens to hear mine..................That said I can only say so much about Klipsch speakers and audio after that it is the people that keep me coming back, This is my opinion on the subject feel free to take it or leave it
