  2. Chuck, so sorry to hear about the misfortune.....my wife and I went through that before having our second youngest....it's a rough emotional issue to deal with...prayers for your family's healing Luther....wow...that's all I can say....astonishing craftsmanship So went to the Jaguar game Friday with a group of about 10-12 guys....had a blast and very ready for the season to start Spent Saturday inside due to rain storms....got some Honey Do Lists items completed and started taking the Sony v444es apart to see what's blown. Watched Southpaw Saturday night......REALLY good movie Got up yesterday and ran codes on Civic...got p1758 and p1298.....so seemed like the lockout solenoid was bad. Ran to local pick-a-part junkyard and got soaked while pulling the part...but got it and a few other misc. parts and was out the door for $50....new was $175...so saved some cash there. Got home and installed it and it still was throwing code P1298...so onto the trusty internet I go....seems it's common for the #15 7.5a fuse to blow when that solenoid goes out. Pulled the fuse....sure enough...replaced the fuse and VICTORY So she's a little banged up but running fine....drove to work today in my demolition derby car.....ordering body parts soon....buddy said I can use his shop mid month for a few days.... Watched Straight Outta Compton last night....was decent.... Back to the grind today....need to que up some tunes....long day of detail technical designs documentation that due end of week

  6. And the thing is like technology. Not like I cannot dial a phone but, some handheld/gadgets/tools, etc., Aids in data accumulation like the scanner tech, developed over the years by Winn-Dixie. Publix, Ace hardware. You have seen or maybe have observed in a retail store, or other, people walking around taking inventory. Applying the tech to a different, or other app., unless the unit was smart, chip/memory/app adaptable, sill primitive, In my limited Apinion, Therefore, research needed to establish a fact, scanner tech not smart, read intuitive, A unit of worth that is user-friendly and actually made life easier, actually was able to cut 40 entries versus 10 for...per single use. Come on man, spend the money and do it right. In this day and age, you should be able to acquire, build your own. Maybe they are good people

  8. Morning yet again gang I do not care to post in the BS forum for many reasons, i did not come to this forum to partake in the subject matter. The whole internet is full of that, in fact, when i looked this forum over upon arriving, if i would have known/seen the subject matter, i would not be here. I came for Audio and stayed for friends interested in the same, as well as a few hobbys mind you! END Weekly Rant/Polk.

  9. Morning folks. A rainy Monday so not much cookin here. Pulled the vinyl off the shelves this weekend and been going through cleaning and playing one or two. Big surprise was a worn cover of Dire Straits "Brothers In Arms" revealed a pretty quiet LP. I bought a bunch of records after getting an inheritance in 2005 and just filed them away. Forgot what I had. Found a lot of 180g jazz and a nice blues collection. And yes dtel the LF likes to listen with me. I hope everyone survived the weekend intact. Not all the news has been good on C&C lately. Lets hope that changes. Jake is hanging in. Got his first dose Glucosamine yesterday and the pain reliever should arrive today. LF beside me reading "A walk In The Woods" in preparation for the movie version starting Sept. 2. I've read it twice and will be taking LF to the movie Thursday for her birthday and then dinner out. A great read by Bill Bryson about hiking the AT. Good job on the autos Jason and Joe. Cheers Ladies and Gents

On the other hand, my daughter is within days (hours?) of giving birth to our second grandson so there is much for which to be grateful. Blessings to each of you. Chuck

  11. Another Monday and back to reality. I did have a great time yesterday afternoon over at my friend's house. I rearranged his system (he isn't able to lift gear) and then we spent hours listening to music. It was a blast.

  17. OK who has a trick for getting stains out of a vinyl top on a car, I have so aero cleaner degreaser and it helps but wont remove, I tried my professsor amos it does a tad better than the aero but still want it better on the plus side the aero takes every stain off the paint, just spray on wipe off I believe the old 85 merc sat under trees for a bit with no care and the paint and top looked pretty bad, the paint can be saved with a little buffing, the top is questionable Joe

  20. Forestelder, if you can afford to do it....amp it. The Emotiva amps are fantastic for the money and going to the Emo amps from two very good Yamaha receivers the amps made a huge improvement. That said, I still have four of the Sherbourn SR-120 receivers in use in my home. These were originally used by custom installers weighing in at 73lbs and providing ample real power across the entire seven channels, unlike the mainstream receivers. The downfall of most receivers is when they are bench tested, now I cannot speak directly to your Onkyo but my FIL has a nice Onkyo receiver and besides it getting extremely hot it becomes a bit distorted at high volume levels. The 140 wpc rating is for two channels driven with a seven channel amp in some high end receivers. When you break it down to seven channels driven it becomes real power numbers around 50 wpc. Still enough to drive most Klipsch speakers but not to reference levels without worry of clipping or slipping into protect modes.

  21. I am a huge proponent for quality outboard amplification, much so that I would never go back to just a n AVR in a medium to large room. With that said, your Onkyo TX-NR3008 is a powerful 54lbs beast that will hold it's own under most situations provided that the room is not overly large and you don't listen at crazy loud volumes. But if clean dynamics, detail, and punch are important, then amp it. Bill

(then more playing around with the Azur pre) Dave, thanks for the well explained review on your live music experience!, sound like a great time there... Mark, thanks for joining me in the Starbuck's brand... Which roast do you drink? Still have some of the Italian sitting in the burr grinder.... We have been doing the Melitta of different grades and those have been very nice. Anyone else here try the Melitta brand? I am sure you have it in your local markets. We found it plentiful in N.C. OK, I will stop in later and hopefully have some photos to upload of my 8 track cleaning/belt change project.... Enjoy your morning everyone, FOURTH MUG going down now....

  34. Third cup of Community. Decided it's the biggest bargain on the shelf. Got this pount at Albertson's on sale for 4.99. I've paid three times that and got no more pleasure. Highly recommended for price/performance. Haven't yet gotten my thoughts together about the boogie woogie performance last night. Texarkana isn't just a hidden gem in American music past, it's rich, rich, rich in the musical presence. John Tennison did things with a Roland piano that bend the mind. Programming for pentatonic and what he calls "quantonal" that yields slight changes in pitch and other characteristics combined with a complete ownership of all the ghosts of the great boogie woogie artists of the past yielded a performance of past, present, and future from the hands of a complete madman whose entire body was thrown into the performance. You hadda be there... The drummer, George Buckner, melded with John's totally manic freeform boogies in a way that made it sound as if they'd been playing together for decades. If that weren't enough (and, in fact, I was already in sensory overload) they were joined for the last two sets by a c. 20 year old local boy I am going to make a very weak attempt to describe as a Hendrix with classical overtones. Try to process that! He did one 12 tone blues improvisation with John and George that reached every fibre and nerve one has. John was so blown away he turned James loose on the last tune and videoed it. The middle aged man who suggested to John he let the kid play said he was "better than Hendrix," which I mentally went "yea, sure...probably good BUT???" Gents, he may be better. Completely mild mannered, self effacing, and I'm told that as opposed Hendrix and others of that genre prone only to teetotaling an occassional glass of wine or couple of beers. I was so moved I stood up at the end and told the audience they could have been in LA, Chicago, New Orleans, New York, London, or Berline last night and heard nothing as good. Yep, that good... Still reeling. Dave

  40. I guess the first question would be for us to hear your definition of each? How do you put one in one category or the other. For me, If a unit can dig deep and be accurate in doing so, it would excel at each.

  41. To amp or not to amp, that is the question of the ages. There are good arguments on both side. I would favor an amp for critical listening, like music and not as much with movies. I like using the amp avr combo.

  42. I hooked up a XPA-2 to my Yamaha AVR for 2 channel listening, it made a HUGE difference in the sound, for the better. I let the AVR handle the HT duties, the wife and kids do not like the volume like I do. Forestelder, why not get an XPA-5 to handle the whole HT? Oh….welcome.

  47. This question get's to the heart of the matter. An accepted definition of one verses the other and their physical properties that clearly dine each. Now, I will not argue that some subs sound better with music depending on your taste for music. But, a well designed sub, ported or sealed when setup properly with the mains should sound good. The peaks, ring and other things goes back to design and setup. Trying to use a sub in a typical room without DSP/PEQ does not hold merit since the room is 50% of what you are hearing. Today, many sub drivers have stronger motor and can be tuned lower which mitigates the issues of group delay and phase shifts that happen below tunning in vented system.

  49. Over the years anytime i get a new tester, i just flat out send it to my guy in LA to check out/tweek/adjust. Never really worried about Calib, i have a few "Tube standards" i plug in after warm up of the tester, it plugs into a socket and the meter should go 50%, not a test of complete working tester but it lets me know it's at least as good as it was last time. I guess im to old school to really care too much about matching tubes, gotta remember i was the kid in the neighborhood who fixed everybodys TV. http://www.alltubetesters.com/sales.htm
