  5. For me, setting the anti-skate is to keep the needle neutral in the groove. Not applying undue pressure to either the inner groove or outer groove. Different arms and cartridges will behave differently in association with the anti-skate. Yes, you don't want it to slide across the record but you also don't want it to move backwards when you lift the arm. What table, arm and cart are you using?

  6. Tarheel, those 10 pounds are to keep other ladies from looking at you if you are out for a run or on the beach... I must be getting used to the heat. Came back from shopping awhile ago (9:00pm), felt pretty good out. It was down to 82 w/87% humidity. Was supposed to prime and paint a metal security gate today, but it rained all morning. First rain that's been in the way in over two weeks. Bruce

  7. Good monday Morning Gang Water from the sky is the forcast, and it is not enough, just enough to make mudd. Easy Monday planned, parts shopping for farm projects, todays work to be performed by my Mouse, clickclick, spendspend. Coffee/Duggans working well, fetchin more...... I observe there is talk about a Bunn coffee maker, Bunn is dam sure proven to be one of the best on the planet. However whenever you can pour water into a coffee maker and get instant hot water out, you are paying to heat that "Standby Water" 24/7. My Presto SS coffee maker works once a day, and rests for 23 hrs after, lying in wait and costing nothing.

  12. Luther it's a restored Denon DP-1250 with an ADC arm and a Clearaudio Virtuoso Wood cartridge. The arm doesn't wander either way at any anti skate setting. Sounds good so no complaints....just wondering. Looked briefly at the B&0 gear. A little different looking She also brought a keyboard, a Yamaha SY 77....now set up in my music room. Anyone know how to hook it up to an old pioneer receiver? I tried the cable in the head phone and mic but no sound. Gary may know.

  24. This debate goes far beyond just pay though. A big issue right now is the whole 32 hour work week thing. Employers don't have to pay benefits below this amount so quite a bit of effort goes into monitoring this, especially for ObamaCare. I know this because I wrote a timekeeping software system and I'm supposed to modify it for this very reason. The difference between 31.5 and 32.5 hours a week is huge. So, what happens is that people get cut off before they hit 32 hours and end up working two part time jobs and still don't have any benefits, so they still lean on the government. My question is, why are we not hearing people protest about this? To me, those benefits are worth way more than a $7 an hour raise. That's less than 12 grand a year. My health insurance alone costs twice that. This practice seems way more questionable to me, especially in terms of getting off of government dependency, yet nobody talks about it. If you really want people off of public assistance, the most effective thing to do would be to get rid of the 32 hour barrier, which would let the people who need it get more hours in as well as receive benefits.

  25. Haha, that made me smile Dean (and I don't mean that in a condescending way). I'll probably always look like a little boy to you guys, and that's totally fine. I've just learned a crap ton of stuff these years at Shure and have a totally different perspective on all things audio these days. I should probably ask to be sure, but I don't think my professional peers see me as a young whippersnapper, haha. And for the record, I actually don't find pleasure in "drive-by cheap shots and attempts at humiliating people", but I do enjoy pressing the status quo - even if that means ruffling a few feathers. I probably over-stepped a bit here, but I am starting to turn into a jaded old fart audio engineer - I even have the arthritis and back problems to go with it. Surely I'm allowed to be cantankerous on occasion. You guys might be surprised how much these obnoxious conversations carry over into my professional career. I make it a point to explore some of the ways to quantify what everyone is hearing - and the more crazy the idea, the better - maybe one of these days I'll stumble on some fringe idea that carries a ton of merit and changes how we approach everything. The more I learn, and the more I experiment, and measure, etc etc.... the more I realize how complicated these systems are. It's actually why I like audio so much......there is an incredible mountain of competing variables and I really enjoy trying to balance it all at once. It is so incredibly dangerous to over-emphasize a single variable. Usually the wisdom is in knowing how far something can be pushed before it's noticeable (meanwhile gaining improvement is something else that is very noticeable). John made a really good point in a message he sent me, which I'll paraphrase by saying that listening to a system is a great way to experience all of the competing variables. It's probably the best way actually because if it sounds fine, then it doesn't matter how it measures. Measurements are only useful for fixing problems - and I think that's the biggest reason why measurements are meaningless in and of themselves. Audiophiles have been bemoaning that point for years. That's getting a bit off the subject, but the point is that to fully understand how a system would sound without actually hearing it, one would need such a huge mountain of data - and even then, you will learn more about the sound based on the topologies employed versus the measurements themselves (unless you've gotten really good at identifying architectures by the measurements). Over the years I like to think I've taken a very objective / open-minded approach. If nothing else, it's been a conscious effort. Sure, I'll argue something to death on a forum - often defending ideas I don't agree with - because the point of it all is to learn more about a subject. I feel like a lot of this xover stuff has remained stagnant for the last 10 years or so - meanwhile I personally have learned a lot of things, and on a surface level I've realized that you can achieve other benefits without giving up the current recipe. Not everything requires a straight up trade-off, but it's impossible to have these conversations when people are so wrapped up in the refinement of their old ways. Not saying the old ways are inherently bad (and the fact they've remained constant for so long is testament to that), but why not push the envelope? Why is it an issue that better ideas exist? It doesn't change the performance of today's approaches. Btw, my passive xover networks look like a wire Oh, and I would openly welcome any criticism on the shortcomings of the approach. Perhaps you'll even point out something that can be improved, and we'll all be the better for it (and I'm not being sarcastic either).

  26. Instead of the thread crapping, why don’t you help out Mustang Guy’s son with the survey in the first post? https://community.klipsch.com/index.php?/topic/160146-minimum-wage-should-it-be-15/#entry1940862 Actually, as I think about this, why do you feel the need to post this type of condescending remark criticizing and devaluing those of us attempting to delve into this topic and thread crap? History on this forum seems to show that posts of this nature only tends to serve to attract other thread crappers. Why are you trying to derail this thread? Are you trying to get it locked? You must have some type of corollary experience since you seem to have gotten very defensive in your ATMOS threads in what you seem to have construed as thread crapping. Did they ask you if you had some type of financial interest related to sales surrounding ATMOS? Also, please note that I have not posted in your ATMOS thread since I do not have anything constructive to add and note that I have not thread crapped in those threads. If you do not want to participate in the discussion, there are plenty of other threads that could interest you; however, please move on from this one if you do not want to participate in an intelligent manner.

  27. With two nice single ended tube integrated's and a SS/tube hybrid I haad been biting the bit for another taste of Class A SS. I fondly remenbered the clean, transperent and controlled sound of Class A solid state. To that end I recently picked up a pair of Forte Audio Model 7, 75 watt Class A monoblocks and a First Watt B1 buffered dual pot volume control. Forte was a division of Threshold and First Watt is a Nelson Pass company. Of course Threshold (Forte) was Nelson's baby also. The Khorns are clean, crisp, open with crystal highs and deep, controlled bass. A more detailed presentation than my SE tubes yet no listening fatigue. The B1 really lets the details show through. And in monoblock configuration the sound stage is enormous side to side. So far so good.

  28. PIXELS. This was probably my favorite movie that I’ve ever seen on my system. I suppose I identify with Adam Sandler’s character WAYYY too much. I’m an old arcade and Atari nerd, can get up to level 32 on Galaga on a single quarter. I too like finding the patterns and exploiting them, and hate the newest generation of games where everything is random, which is why I refuse to play Call of Duty online. This is a central theme to the movie but some people probably won’t get it. There’s lots of old games that show up, space invaders, joust, pac-man, galaga, centipede, Q-bert, etc. Plenty of LFE, pac-man destroying the city is cool. Plenty of nostalgic pop-culture references like Fantasy Island. I rented it because I figured it would suck and didn't want to buy it if so, but I loved it. Interestingly, it seems that very few other people like it, like on Rotten Tomatoes, it had a very bad score. Kinda makes me think that you’d have to be an old gamer or younger kid with a more open mind to appreciate it. Some of the reviews were like “I’m 14 and hated it”. Well, of course you did.

  29. I actually quite enjoy the debate between "vendors" when it's kept civil. I also wish engineers from various companies would debate more too - like back in the 70's when PWK would write articles firing at his competition, which we now learn all sorts of great things from. Can you guys imagine what it'd be like if they had forums back then? Disagreement is not a form of disrespect. And the more flavorful the language, the more entertaining it is for everyone else.

  31. For my purpose, I use comparison to other countries as an illustration that something is practical or possible. For example, our GINI is rather high (bad) compared with other developed countries. That says to me that we can engineer our GINI to a better number through some process. If one claims a great which had never been accomplished it losses credibility as an idea.Sent from my SM-T330NU using Tapatalk The problem with the GINI is it can look good when everybody is equally poor and starving to death, Sure, it measures distribution, and sure, in a land with our level of wealth, we can see that there can be a more equal distribution without the need for untold suffering. That's all and well. But it doesn't answer the magic question: Will a lower GINI make us better-off on average? Maybe; maybe not. There is a lot to be said for wealth concentrations. Even Alexis de Tocqueville commented briefly on it when he said great nations rise and become powerful as a result of concentrated wealth. Sure, I can agree that some concentration builds a kind of capital that is needed for big projects. Good point. Right now, most of our private capital can not be deployed, because there is no project with an ROI. I mentioned previously the $3 trillion which sits rotting in corporate coffers. That's very bad and indicative of radically wrong distribution. We need more consumption now, more spending, but wages are too low to provide that boost. Had some of that $3T gone for wages, we'd have better growth, more jobs. Two facts describe the trouble: 28M jobless; $3T in unused capital. You can't invest with no demand, and you can't create demand without more spendable income. Sent from my SM-T330NU using Tapatalk

  38. My family has a history similar to this post. My great grandfather was an accountant over in England but not exactly doing super well. Saved up enough money to get a boat ride over for his honeymoon. Apparently this was the land of opportunity because he never went back. To be an accountant over in England you had to be pretty smart, dealing with pounds and shillings at the minimum. Our system was super easy comparatively, plus there was no glass ceiling, you could be as successful as you wanted. He quickly climbed the ladder and became a top dog in the IRS,and they got very rich. Your post also makes me wonder, what makes somebody hungry for success? Without that hunger, you can never be anybody. Successful parents can teach a work ethic to their kids but how do they teach them to be hungry for success like the immigrants would have? Just makes me think we are spoiled as a society. I mean, one kid living in the ghetto could be nothing, but on the flip side, there's Dr. Ben Carson. One kid could be part of a dynasty and enjoy great success, yet one kid with similar family ties ends up being a nobody. I don't understand it. Carson didn't come from the ghetto....no one during his fathers time was in the "ghetto" working at the Cadillac plant. It was a unionized job that paid even more than Chrysler Hamtramck!!!! During the 70's My father was doing pretty well there (topped out at $77k yearly in 75). An illness and the loss of his ability to work - thrust us into poverty and the deep south. Dr. Carson's family did very well and were middle class to upper middle class. I see that there was a divorce - but the area that his mother lived in was still very affluent. They lived in the south-west side of Detroit. Now if they were to say that they lived on Mack Ave, or Joy Rd, Brewsters, Tireman, or Dexter....they yes that would be poverty....but that's not the SW side either. Carson has his own view of what poverty is....and in may peoples minds - that may be poverty...until you go to the east side!!!! I wonder is that why they are questioning his background now. I'm originally from the "D" ol' school and I know it very well!!! Carson is about my sisters age.

  39. It's sad really, like they have dreams of retirement but then they get there and the money runs out quickly then have to re-enter the workforce. Most can't go back to their old jobs. Some just do it out of being lonely though. Luckily the national park system is good about hiring older people to man the ranger stations and things like that, very easy plus it gives them a chance to talk to people and feel like they contribute to society. We've got to figure out how to stop screwing over retirees. Lots of these people only know how to save, have no idea how to invest. You can save all your life but when you retire you're going to be one of these people. We are forcing people into a risky stock market against their wishes.

  41. It sure is an eye-opening map on slide 33. My Grandfather on my Dad's side was first generation to come to the U.S. and started working in a grist mill but soon went over to the coal mines since the mining company would lease the miners land and allow them to build a small house (very primitive with no indoor plumbing, electricity or gas) and farm the land. Of course, there was no equity accumulated in this manner and to survive and make ends meet most of the children had to drop out of school to help on the farm. Similar on my Mom's side; however, my Grandfather on that side managed to find work in the steel mill, did a lot of fishing and trapping to supplement, and was able to buy a house. Although, it was during a period in time before the United Steelworkers and he could not afford an upgrade house with indoor plumbing until my Mom was 16. .

So many people who will go out of their way to help each other and educate the people who are like me, I know the sound I like, I just don't and have never really understood the technical side to it. And more importantly, even at my age, I keep learning from people who share their life's experiences, the one thing I've learned is when you quit trying to learn, have someone pat you in the face with a shovel Many thanks for allowing me to be here!
