  4. Stress will wreak havoc on a body. When my youngest daughter was in ICU for 45 days my wife lost hair by the handfuls. Once my daughter got home, it started filling back in. I think stress can be the worst thing for your health, it can affect everything. My doctor mentioned that to me once….stress is one of the worst thing for our body.

  6. OK....carb is off in the bucket of carb-o-cleaner....lucky I got this 5 gal bucket of carb cleaner two summers ago. I bought a old 72 Buick Electra with a 455 in it and the carb needed a rebuild.... That bucket cost me close to $100.... I was wondering if I was ever going to use it again.... Oldtimer...you right....you can buy almost anything for a old bug....but some of this Honda stuff is just gone....no more....you just can't get it.... I was able to find a carb kit and only one float....the kit didn't come with the O-ring under the carb to the base plate......but....but.... I looked in some of my stash and I found some carb stuff and the special O-ring....oh yea....it's all good.... Gonna let it soak over night and reassemble tomorrow.....not out of the woods yet.... MKP :-)

  7. a carb? What do you work in a museum carbs still make better power than injection, just look at pro stock. Fuel injection is a lot nicer in cold weather or steep inclines or hard G-force turns though Roger

  9. Yep, today is my Friday as I have tomorrow off. My vacation starts over at the end of the month and I had one more day to use up as I can't carry them over to the next year. I'm going to start setting faucets and shower trim in the bathroom. I'm almost done! My wife on the other hand has a ton to paint.

  21. This is giving people a very wrong impression about tube reliability! As to portability of tube testers, I don't know of any service guys (including myself) who carried one. All that was needed was a filament continuity tester for sets using a series string arrangement. Yes, portable tube caddy's were needed as carrying a proper stock of replacements would have been a bit difficult using cardboard boxes! And, yes, tubes occasionally had to be replaced in TVs as they were often intentionally abused by the manufacturers exceeding sensible ratings to fuel sales of replacements (the same applied to many audio amps of the day). Having tube testers on almost every street corner was also a marketing device, especially since many were intentionally calibrated to read on the low side of "good" (there was a place in the neighborhood which rented such testers to drugstores, etc., and stocked them. You can't imagine how much money these guys generated!). I had many customers who tried to effect their own repairs by testing and replacing tubes (which was useful when the filament was open) only to wind up calling me in regardless. Most of the time there was nothing wrong with the tubes they replaced and some simple adjustments restored normal operation of the set. As to multiple repair shops to fix the stuff, sure we had to deal with failed caps and resistors, or an open flyback xfmr but that rarely was caused by the tubes. House calls were, of course, necessary to repair console TVs. Having to pull the chassis and bring it back to the shop wasn't all that common an event. I was often able to pull a chassis in the customer's home and locate the "culprit" with nothing more than a meter and a can of component "freeze." Oxidation of tube pins in sets which were used on a daily or near-daily basis was never an issue (and this was in a community on the ocean with intense salt spray in the air much of the time). About the only part of TVs which was really affected by the salt was the tuner or, in the case of radios/audio equipment, controls which were seldom adjusted or slide switches which were rarely thrown. And even the tuners were often repairable on premises. One last point is that is it impossible to compare tube reliability in TVs to reliability in properly designed audio equipment. Take, for example, the 6BG6 (electrically identical to the 6L6) which was used as a horizontal output tube in some sets. In TVs, it was often prone to failure (as was the damper, vertical oscillator/amplifier, high voltage rectifier for the picture tube anode, and typical 5U4 rectifier for the lower voltages) because of the extreme operating conditions combined with a very hot environment. That tube, or any 6L6 variant for that matter, if used in a conservatively designed amplifier can last beyond any reasonable expectation. The same goes for the vertical oscillator/amplifier tubes popular with SET designers. So, anyone contemplating getting into tube amps should not be dissuaded by Craig's arguments. They are simply invalid if the equipment is properly designed. Maynard

  22. Hello All, I am the proud new owner of the Forte's and have no intention on a flip. Got them home and hooked up to a Musical Fidelity A5 integrated, wow. These are keepers for me. I can't think of another speaker that can check so many boxes for the footprint or price. Thanks Hogfan!

  23. Afternoon gang.... BOSS is making some aftrrnoon coffee....so I thought it was fitting that I stopped in.... Well we got some old skool carb overhauling going on at the Honda shop this afternoon... it's the 79 Accord that been here for the last few weeks...thought I would jump into today...the plan was to just rebuild it on the car....that's what we did back in the day....but not this one...I pulled the top off and it's really really bad....the accelerator pump diaphram is blown out...the only way to get to it pull the carb off. So I'm hoping for a miracle to pull this one off....cuz if something brakes that's not in the rebuild kit I got..it's not good...the "old box" of carb parts that I had many many years ago got tossed...and there's no calling the dealer for anything on this car.... That's about it so far for the day.....I'm going back in....coffee break over......... later... MKP :-)

  26. Some of you may remember my build of a re-envisioned amplifier based on the Dynaco ST70. I basically took an original ST70 as my source of inspiration, used only the output transformers from it and built an updated version from scratch.

  27. I have a very nice Thorens TD-160 setup I would like to sell. The table was purchased by me from Dave at Vinyl Nirvana a couple years ago. Dave does great work, his tables are always 100% squared away and he's a super guy to deal with. This one is basically all original cosmetically, with the top plate being in exceptionally nice condition (I hesitate to say perfect, but . . ). The dustcover is original, and after forty years or so the relatively soft plastic has accumulated scuffs and mars. They don't show in the photo, but they are there. Dave installed a Sumiko MMT tonearm on the unit and I installed an Ortofon 2M black cart, Funk 5mm Achromat (and set the VTA accordingly), Bren weight and an upgraded set of RCA's. I also have listed a Music Hall 2.0 Cruise Control unit that I used with this table which I am selling separately. The table performs well, with nice detail and the combo delivered excellent soundstage and energy. The TD-160 was one of Thorens' best tables from that era. Thorens TD-160 - ($850) - incl Ortofon 2m Black - ($775) - incl Bren weight - ($70) - incl Upgrade RCA's - ($200) - incl Funk 5mm Achromat - ($125) - incl Cost ($2020) - sell $1020 Music Hall 2.0 Cruise Control - $175 shipped conus I will professionally double box and ship the unit for $75 additional. Of course if you are in the Southern Calif area I would love a pick up sale (I'm in San Diego) to avoid the delicate ship.

  33. Same here. The amount I borrowed both for an expensive private school which paid for several semesters combined with the amount borrowed for graduate school at a state university might have paid for a single semester at the same private school today. Today's costs are well beyond the rate of inflation. Education is the key to our economic future, but the current structure is failing everyone except the schools and the lenders. The past where only the rich got the better educations will not work either. The whole thing needs a redo. From kindergarten on up.

  34. Those who agree with you have never LIVED with really good subwoofers (not cheap ones) which means at least 3 of them balanced out in the room acoustically and EQ'd. Once you have that you will never live without. I currently have 3 Danley TH-50's of which 4 are used in a Chicago IMAX theater. Yeah, I like headroom, and bass detail, but with the same FEEL as live bass. You have to feel the bass below 60 hz. to really expericence the full spectrum that has been on CD's down to 4 Hz. for over 3 decades.

  35. I feel like I have a valid post to make on this topic since I am in the midst of this. I currently have about $81,000 in student loans. I am slated to accumulate between $28,000 and $37,000 more. There is no option to pay amounts of 120 or so at a time (what my paychecks are usually...or were). They're seeking out $400-$800 at a time. College tuition costs are outrageous. Maryville's tuition with board this last year would have been $37,500 for me. SAU - where I am now and am a resident of the city - is $27,770. It isn't always as easy as just not borrowing or being able to work it all off. That being said, I don't know this guys story, but I do know of billing offices that don't notify you of debt before the collection agency calls. That practice is shoddy to say the least. And I also agree, if it is your debt, you owe it. Albeit interest on these loans is asinine.

  41. Your going to be fine, after the culture shock, I sure hope your bringing the triplets, the Belles. ? You will have time to relax and enjoy yourself without as much stress, and get back into listening and playing more music. Your moving to Oregon, now get a atomizer and relax, you may find you end up much healthier, and positively calmer...........but still look before both ways you cross the road

  42. Not enough to talk about but it also does not require you to kill yourself just to pay for things you really don't need. The normal way of thinking is you need the big fancy house and new cars, not really, you just need to be happy and not worry what others may think. My wife gave me a t-shirt, it says " In memory of when I cared". i think i need to read this several times. I was just taking a walk at work and thinking about retirement. I've been blessed in not having to worry about money in quite some time. I worry about the loss of income and still being as financially irresponsible as i am now -- most of the stuff i buy i don't need ... except the guitars, of course. I know that i can live because many people are living on less than what i'll be making in retirement; but, my mind is telling me that i'll be limited. Guess i should i go read the Marijuana thread and stop overthinking it.
