  1. Lot's of moving mass... That describes Dave's computer room. Big woofers and lots of them. We road tripped to Columbus to pick up his new Klipschorns. Be sure to congratulate him. A more deserving person doesn't exist. After putting the Khorns in, I was about to get in the truck and head off and Dave invited me to hear his computer speakers. I think Dave is gonna sell his LaScalas. I have 7 already, so I don't need any. They are as nice as any of mine. I am holding them at my shop till he decides for sure. Frankly I think the Khorns go very well in that room, and they definitely sound great.

  2. Klipsch Horns in the house, thanks to a road trip with Mustang Guy. Thanks Craig, I owe you one.

  3. LOL. It was me who clicked Buy now; however, since I really didn't have anywhere to put them, Dave (wvu80) bought them. We had a nice road trip. The guy who sold them was awesome. We turned around In John Kasich's driveway since I passed the sellers house by accident. It was that stupid lady in the GPS's fault. Yes, the seller lives 4 houses away from him. Here they are in their new home: https://community.klipsch.com/index.php?/topic/135353-what-i-got-today/?p=2015442

  5. Agree on all counts. Craig actually sized up my available living room space and made excellent recommendations. He was right about improved sound, placement which actually freed up space in the LR, and he was right about the aesthetics as the larger Khorns actually blends better with my other wife-mandated furniture, which greatly increases the likelihood she will like them better. For me, I like the much larger sound stage and off-axis listening. The Scala's have great sound, but the Khorns have great sound in every listening position.

  7. I am so tired of audio reviews. When I read a car review, I can understand what they are saying. When I read a hotel review, I understand what the reviewer is saying is good or bad about the particular site. When I read a resturaunt review, I either get hungrier or decide to start a diet. But when I read an audio review,it reminds me of the children's story about the Emperor who had no clothes. Here are lines from the last review I read. More dynamic at the macro level and about the same as you scale down to the micro level. Imaging is similar in density and edge definition (i.e. very good) but with a little less layering. A nice sense of natural flesh and blood solidity comes through. The acoustic around the images is less charged by the music. The texture (grain size of noise) is a bit larger and more noticeable and in the plane of the music but only rarely intrusive. There is a nice sense of air and space Gives less of a 'they are here' perspective and more of a 'you are there' sense to the music A little less continuous -- a little larger grained -- but still very liquid and flowing and still making the music come across as connected from moment to moment to be musically compelling. WTF?

  9. Morning gang.... The grandkids were delivered to the house this morning. My daughter dropped them off on the way to her school. The BOSS left earlier to go to moms. So I'll hang out here till the bus comes.... Then off to the shop for me..... The BOSS will join me there later... OH Boy..... all this talk about martinis......I started drinking martinis at the end of my drinking career. When I worked at Honda of Seattle me and the shop foreman would go out for lunch. I would get a beer or two or three or ....... anyway he drank martinis.... I'm like what the hell are you drinking???? He said you never had a martini??? Ahhhh No I said.... At next lunch I ordered one of those bad boys.... OH man that was it....... It was on...... I loved those things..... I still liked my beer, but new drink was the martini... But it seemed I developed a allergic reaction to them...... On more than one occasion I woke up in strange places..... these places were cinder block rooms with bars on the doors The people there were not friendly They didn't seem to "like" me a whole lot....and when I woke up I would always be banged and bruised up ...... Then I would have to speak to this man with a black robe behind this big bench.... He didn't "like" me ether.... Before I spoke my escort would take off these silver bracelets they would put on me.. Man they hurt...The escorts also had these "stick" on them.... I think they call these sticks a Billy Club... Never had the chance to meet "Billy" .... But I don't think I would like him... I'm a slow learner sometimes..... But I finally found out that if I stopped drinking stuff with alcohol in them I wouldn't suffer with these allergic reactions... God.... I was such an A$$ hole.... Hey... The worst stuff I drink now is this coffee stuff.... and I just finished my 2nd cup.... I gotta roll.... have a good day my friends..... Great pics of all your guys dogs MKP :-)

  12. Received some exciting photos today. All of the pieces for the build are now complete! Last three things before completion are: 1) Sand Entire Project 2) Stain Entire Project 3) Varnish Entire Project As of now, we are tentatively looking at Father's Day Week to make the journey to Alabama to pick up the unit and bring it back to Florida for installation! This piece will go above each column. Some changes have been made from the original "Sketch Up". Since the top doors were only going to be 9" tall and my ceiling is 10', the space would be so small and a ladder would be needed to gain access to, we decided to go with a more ornate look for the top of the cabinet. The top crown molding and the board with the medallions will extend into the room to provide a 3D effect and also so that the lighting above the screen will be able to be installed. As you can see below, the rounded piece consists of several separate pieces of wood that were glued and sanded to give the appearance of one single piece. There was an extra diamond strip that was used for additional trim to help tie in the diamond pattern to the other elements.

  14. I'm really not an amp guy. But why be quiet? In my view the pre amp is in a very friendly environment. The load is friendly and pretty constant. It does not have to produce power to speak of. They are all operating Class A. They just produce some voltage gain. (Yeah, some op-amp are push pull.) This means that there is no great technological problem. An inexpensive one should do well. I haven't see a distortion level on pre-amps but there is no excuse for distortion in such undemanding environments. As always, I'll point out that except for the new digital age, there are probably a dozen Class A low level amps in the chain between the microphone and the input to your power amp. They do well and the last one on your rig does to too. It is not going to ruin things OTOH, the power amp has to do just that, produce power. The speaker load is variable with frequency. This is more demanding on the technology. Therefore, you should expect to have to spend money there to get good results. WMcD

Yep, that's about all either one can do at their respective ages They're piling on here tar - you're getting the Rodney Dangerfield treatment! He's still younger than you in dog years?! Haha! Oh well - it's better than the alternative I suppose. At least you're here! Yeah Carl's just peeved because I make better martinis than he does If was going to Hope I would give him a lesson. 22. Nice dynamics at loud volumes but also has nice dynamics at lower volumes, which is often times harder. I just took some really good acid and this song is making me hallucinate. Pretty colors and shapes, feels like I can touch the music. Oh wow, a woman just appeared. This acid rocks. I have no idea what I'm talking about right now so just bear with me. These speakers are damn smooth. Man I did really good buying this studio apartment. Did I just say that out loud? Focus! Gotta say something good that people can actually understand here before I wrap up, this line always works. Nice huh. Dude, what if this whole planet is just a molecule on a giant dog's butt hair?

  23. My last big martini night was at a company anniversary dinner and the booze was a flowin'. Unusual for me but I was drinking martini's and I believe using the olives as my appetizer. I was unaware but my pals were helping me out by ordering me doubles. I knew I approaching meltdown when I was mouth kissing the VP/sales manager. Yeah, a guy. That party was hard to live down.

  25. Afternoon all.... Oh boy....not a good day.... The BOSS had to put her mom back in the hospital again this morning. So The BOSS has been dealing with alot of today. I won't bore you with all crapp but this all could have been avoided if someone from the doctor's office and the doctor gave a shitt..... To say the health care system "sucks" would be an understatement... It's not like my mother-in-law is a new patient she's been going there for the last twenty years... Nobody gives a shitt anymore...It seems like I give more of a shitt about my customers cars that these health care professionals give for people.... I think I need a martini ........ NOT.... OK rant over... Chuck good vibes coming your way for your friend... The BOSS just called..... there taking mom back home...seems all is ok.....for now... Gotta work...I think I'm gonna put some music on....time to power up the KP's Later... MKP :-)

  28. As with anything, moderation is the key. I've pretty much stopped drinking on week nights and mostly drink on Saturdays now. It's not a hard and fast rule but I've been doing pretty good with it. This all goes out the window however in Hope in a couple weeks.

  29. Yeah, it's funny how things turned out. Mustang Guy ended up making a decision that ended up affecting MY life in a significant way. I certainly consider have Khorns in my living room a significant upgrade to the quality of my audio life. But there are other decisions NOT made that did the same thing. Prerich might have made other decisions in the heat of the moment that could have resulted in HIM ending up with those particular fantastic Khorns. 31. Mornin' gang ....just a quick check-in. My music playing partner/bud had a mild stroke yesterday but looks like he'll recover, at least at this point. Good friend and a really fine guitarist. His name is Jack. Any prayers appreciated. My boozing days are long past, but the martini contest is a riot. Good luck. Another sunny day out here .. gonna take advantage. Cheers guys.

  33. Good morning, Today I'm making do with Kirkland 100% Colombian Supremo Bean Dark Roast Fine Grind. Looking forward to the weekend to sample some of the LavAzza Nancy received as a Mothers Day gift from our older son, at least that's what she tells me. A few hundred more posts and I'll hit 5k, which reminds me of Groucho's comment, "I don't want to belong to any club that would have me."

  35. From what I have been reading, the new horn design in the RP series is a smoother horn and provides less artifacts than the R II series. A lot of what will generate a brittle / harsh sound can be the amplifier and speaker matching. I have just purchased a set of RP-160Ms matched up to a pair of r12sw subs. Unbelievable what $750 can buy. The RP-160Ms had also been described as peaky but using my AVM-30 and REF-1000s, they are very smooth. Not super forward in the mids and very relaxed. Suffice it to say that the new RP series is a very good speaker but what you get out of it will be what you put into it. Component changes, even cables will show changes in sound. By the way I'm not disparaging the RF7 IIs but just pointing out something that a lot of folks forget. Unless you try the speaker in your room with your components, all bets are off. Nobody can tell you if you will like it. System synergy!!

  36. Indeed. You know, when I watch vintage movies I am very careful to not judge them with the eye of a modern movie goer... I try my best to look at them with the vision of the makers of that era. I love old movies! This is not a litho, its an actual multi-color screen print... like I said, its actually art.

  37. All of the parts are available through Parts Express, except the autoformer. However, Hovland is no longer in business, so you will need to buy Solen caps, or another film and foil cap. DHA is my brother's initials. If I built a set using K-77 tweeters, I'd build DHA3s. The smaller tweeter cap reduces a bump in the response of the K-77 around 6k to 8k. Since the K-77 is really a 105 dB/w/m driver, the bulb and resistor form an L-pad in addition to tweeter protection. If you use Bob Crites' tweeters, or similar, you can use the DHA2 and maybe we'll need to adjust the 65 ohm resistor. With 6 dB filters, the crossover point is not sharply defined, so while it calculates 400 Hz, it should work quite well in a Belle, as long as the squawker is 16 ohm. While set for a K-55-V at 107 dB/w/m, the autoformer taps can be adjusted without changing the other components because the swamping resistor creates a relatively stable impedance to the squawker filters. If you deviate much from 12 ohms DCR/16 Ohms impedance and 107 dB, we need to check the values. The design follows a philosophy I found back in college, I think. It stated that each crossover point needed similar, and both, low pass and high pass filters to maintain phase through the crossover point. If it has any advantage, that might be it. The design was initially done to replace Type AL crossovers and would be used with tube amps. When brother found out what tube amps cost, he changed his mind and we added the tweeter protection.
