  2. ^^^^^ Agreed, all those guys have mad skills and N Y Workshop is over the top also. And Dtel like you I like my tools powered also; it allows me to screw up a project much more quickly.

  3. The current TOH Detroit series has them working on two old houses. I've been a loyal TOH fan for decades.

  4. Yep....free houses for the asking. I spent 10 years renovating a Queen Anne Victorian in Wilmington's historic district back in the 70s and 80s. Fearless back in those days Been watching TOH since the first show back when Bob Villa was the host.

  5. That lawsuit proved the Bob didn't have any kind of contractors license in any state. Kevin was a homeowner currently out of work when the TOH crew hired him. I don't think he had any experience in the TV industry before that.

  6. Reading all of that, I'm going to say what they say in the NFL..........COME ON MAN From a boom box to yamaha separates, the difference should be astounding. Not trying to give you a hard time, you actually had me laughing. But really, glad it's doing much better, you should go thank the wife one more time, she did great.

  7. Finally got the hi if up and running after 15 yrs of cold (Colorado) and hot (Phoenix) storage. As documented elsewhere, I got a set of la Scala about a month ago. Due to a dead CD player I powered them with a Pioneer boom box. Surprisingly, this sounded quite good. A whole lot better than the I pod dock I had been listening to. Well, my wife turned up a Yamaha CDC-585 at a yard sale for a fin. Hooked this to the existing Yamaha C-60 pre and M-65 amp and got ready to listen to awesome stereo. I got awesome mono. No left channel. Bummer. A bit of t/s and a loose output connection on the pre was found. A dab of solder later and the schweeet sounds were heard. I expected improvement, but the increase in fidelity was most astounding. Tracks which were muffled before were now crystal. This is the Yamaha sound I remember.I think I will be enjoying this for a while.

  8. That's ok, as long as you don't expect any work out of Bob, he's a clown, or the "celebrity" of the show, the others know what there doing. Bob was to busy shilling for the late Sears.

  12. Good morning all- It's sunny here and supposed to stay that way. Yesterday I drained the gas from the snowblower -- which guarantees another snowstorm -- and removed the "defibrillator" feature from my mother-in-law's ancient corded electric lawn mower. If you let your hands stray from the foam handles to anything metal, you received a mild -- although not unpleasant -- electric shock. I traced the problem to frayed wires near where the power cord goes into the motor housing. This gave me an opportunity to make a big show of dragging out my stereo repair stuff to fix the mower. My wife had to now understand why no home should be without soldering equipment, a mulit-meter, wire strippers, heat shrink tubing and a heat gun. At first I was surprised by the four conductor cord. The I realized the speed control required a fourth wire,

  16. As a general rule of THUMB....The higher the frequency of the sound it makes, the faster the gas is moving through the orifice. This does NOT take into account any particulates (or chunks!) moving WITH the gas as it escapes.

  17. They are good, it was obvious who did the work, they would probably fill Bob in on what to say to not look dumb. Another good show was The new Yankee workshop, amazing work with only hand tools, Myself I like all my tools powered if possible, I don't have those kind of skills, or patience.

  18. I believe Bob was involved in a lawsuit regarding a home that he sold. Pipes hammered and a bunch of other issues. I bet Norm could build some killer enclosures. I agree with dtel, those three guys can renovate my place anytime.

  19. All three are 4.6L Rover V8 powered. US market Mk I & II Range Rovers and Discoveries were only available with Rover V8's. I bought the Discovery with a bad engine, but I've got this one almost ready to go in:

  22. Chuck- What's the current TOH project? The DVR is supposed to be recording -- or have recorded -- the Detroit project. Is that still going? I haven't watched the recordings yet.

  23. Well I was considering mine but they would about twice your budget, reason being is they are already completely modded. Backs are closed in completely they have Greg's tractrix horn upgrades and BMS 2" drivers custom built xovers and Fostex tweeters.

  24. I think all this concern about what to drive the Forte's with is poppycock. Or driving any speaker for that matter. First time I heard a pair of Forte's, my friend had them connected to a cheapo 20w/ch. POS receiver. I was floored by the barrage of undistorted sound. That receiver didn't need to go anywhere NEAR clipping to pin me to the wall, with a poop-eating grin, of course. If Close82 hasn't figured this out, it's because he hasn't turned on his receiver yet!

  26. I remember seeing the comedian Gallagher once (he opened for the band America). he was mocking a television commercial where somebody says that their album just hit the charts and they want to celebrate with a cup of coffee. since our buddy Chuck started this thread ... was he the one celebrating with a cup of coffee?
