  1. I’ve been worried about excessive Lascala vibration/ resonance all week🤷 , But tonight I’ll sleep good knowing that they were just faithfully reproducing a crappy recording . What a relief 🤓

  6. don't most newer model cars have hdmi inputs? that would be a simple usb-c to hdmi connector, like you would use for a wall wart. I've used 'boxes' like you showed above for somethings... they work reasonably well.

  8. As can be seen in this clip of the recording (line level sample) when he sings Big and Blue Skies you can see the range in the 100Hz - 180Hz is very active with maximum peaking ~141Hz. IMG_4614.mov

  16. Would you rather have an A, B, C or D on a test? Class A is class A, the purist form of amplification. There is a reason it is the first letter of the alphabet when it comes to amplification, none better. The audio signal is not manipulated as in the other forms. Can one hear the difference? Only if your hearing is good enough. That being said I have some class D amplifiers that sound really, really good. I could live with one of them. Class D amplification is for the masses now and in the future but purist will still seek class A.

  18. I used a Crown XLi800 with my LS when I hauled them out to use at a huge party, over 100 folks there. They rocked quite well. It may be built offshore (China), but it's been wonderful. It's a tad heavier than the XLs series digital amps. 300wpc / 600 watts, bridged mono. Binding posts and Neutrik Speakon connections. $339 at Sweetwater. If this is for your own enjoyment you probably don't need bigger, but they have them. When you check back in, let us know how the refurbishment goes on the Souncraftsmen gear.

  20. Hey DJ, I like that boogie sammich! Tell me he didn't make a deal that was in 2015?. The unmistakable reggae jazz fusion that only the Police could do right that I've heard. And that's a toe tapper to end up with. Yeah the last is the top of the ticket!

  22. I really have to agree with @Shakeydeal on this one. Personally, I'm the type of person who struggles to hear differences. Speaker cables and interlinks, for example, all sound the same to me (at least from what I've tested so far), and the same goes for DACs. I've tried a few but can't really hear any differences. Where I can notice a distinction is with amps. Sometimes the differences are subtle, and other times they are quite noticeable. So, do yourself a favor and truly give the topic of amps the attention it deserves.

  23. So you are saying that the AL5 needs a stand to not resonate? Or are you saying that it needs a stand to have the correct frequency response? What exactly do you propose would have been different if the AL5 had been on a stand. I think the measurements do a good job of showing what one can expect when listening in a real room. The review and the comments with the measurements are generally favorable.

  24. the fact that the AL-5 is heavy does not preclude that the testing and measurement methods are not to be compromised , the Author should have used a stand as a strict minimum , or the results are flawed " couldn't lift the La Scala off the floor onto a stand " now that's just too bad , either you do it right or your published results are inaccurate and worthless , because had the Author used a stand , the results would have been very different .

  25. Pretty sure that review is the AL5. I don't think they ever reviewed the original lascala. Sam Tellig did a write up of the LS II.

  27. Contrary to conventional wisdom on this site, amplifiers do NOT sound the same. And buying a cheap receiver at a big box store will bear that out more than anything I can tell you. But let's hope you make the smart decision not to do such a thing. Lascalas and tubes go together like bees and honey. Please state what your budget is and what you consider "modern conveniences" and someone here might be able to recommend a tube amp for you.

  28. RCA input jacks are unbalanced input connections. Yes the shield needs to go to the chassis on the left input just like the right. If it has always been like this you have been lucky. Or perhaps a solder joint has cracked or opened in some other fashion. Could even be lifted foil on the circuit board. What amp is it? Everything you wanted (or didn't) to know about grounding: https://centralindianaaes.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/indy-aes-2012-seminar-w-notes-v1-0.pdf

  29. Solid state or would you consider tubes? Schiit Audio sells preamps and amplifiers for less than what you might think for US made. There are some others depending on your budget and ss or tube.

  32. Hi, @KROCK Me too Santa came early 🎅 For mine, I bought a Bouon Tokyo Ultimate THT-291 from Japan. It is made of Hanenite, a material that resembles rubber, but which does not have the same characteristics: it absorbs energy and does not rebound. Audiotechnica uses it in its high-end cartridges and its AT SUT 1000 transformer. It's less noble than your expensive and super Boston, but for the price of around $70 it's a good mat 😍 Watch from 1:00 how Hanenite absorbs energy: Hanenite ball does not bounce 😉

  39. You'd probably really like the Grado sound. And as Wrinkles said the SR-60 and 80i are less than $100. Although they both come with on-ear pads, there are many mods available to address their somewhat less than ideal comfort. You can replace the pads with Grado's own circumaural "L-Cush" pads for $20, or use more complicated adapters and such that accept other pads. - Bill

  40. The web site's a little clunky. If you select Products from the top, then (the clue) loudspeakers from the left-side menu, it links to a PDF of the specs: (the clue) specifications On a related subject -- What about some of the Klipsch "bookshelf"-sized speakers like the RB-51 / 61 / 81? How do these behave when placed relatively close to the wall? With or without a sub? - Bill

  41. Another model you might consider is (the clue) loudspeaker from Sjöfn Hifi. It's a small 2-way design that I thought had much of the character of a single-driver design (the woofer covers a very wide frequency range). Their low frequency extension is amazing considering their size. The catch is room placement. It's designed to go close to the wall, toed in 22.5 degrees, 20" from the floor. (the clue) - Bill

  42. Hmmm... I see a list of 5 files, named Sound 3, 4, 5, 7, and 8 (.wav). Download results: Sound 3.wav -- Completes (290 MB) Sound 4.wav -- Always fails at 15.7 MB / 284 MB Sound 5.wav -- Completes (50.5 MB) Sound 7.wav -- Always fails at 5.0 MB / 301.8 MB Sound 8.wav -- Always fails at 306.0 MB / 340.4 MB There's something strange about the web page as well. In Firefox (version 13.0.1), clicking on the file names or the Download button did nothing, and the browser-based player (HTML 5?) doesn't work. The Epiphany browser (Webkit) works, though. In any case, thanks for sharing this. I'll see if I can figure out anything else with Firefox on my end. Your St. James Infirmary recording has become one of my favorite demo tracks. I've brought it to RMAF the last couple of years and received many questions and compliments. I think the best I've ever heard it, in terms of realism, was on the Vandersteen Model 7s in a large suite. - Bill

  43. I thought of PWK's BS buttons when I saw those buttons. They're from Precision Transducer Engineering -- they make some refrigerator-sized active speakers with an 18" sub on the bottom and a Tannoy driver with upgraded (TAD?) HF compression driver on the top. I noticed some more "mainstream" brands than at previous RMAFs, including Hsu, Polkaudio, and Martin Logan. Now if only Klipsch and Magnepan would show at RMAF... [] And I think they were using a ~$100,000 pair of Audio Note amps. I listened to a couple of tracks in this room. OK, I guess, but the price is absurd. - Bill
