  1. I can't agree with this. B&W 800 series are 92 db but require huge amps to drive them. I use a Denon 5800 receiver (170 wpc) to easily drive 5 Palladium speakers. I could get by with less power. I do agree that cinema is big and efficient. I am guessing that the word "BIG" means big speakers. Maybe a variant / updated CF4? You bring up a good point. Palladiums are inefficient compared to the Heritage and Cinema series. Compared to other 'audiophile' speakers on the planet, they are efficient. I still tend to think it is a line between the Palladiums and the Ref II's. Looking for a good review from Stereophile, AVS forums, etc. should be a goal if they intend to "return to their roots" and "emphasize premium products". Roots = PWK, so we must ask, WWPWK do? With high powered amps and receivers, perhaps he would build affordable Palladiums. What would PWK do? I'll tell you what he would do, and that is what he always intended to do and that is make a beautiful piece of furniture Jubilee for home use! Roger

  4. 6-800 is what most projectors run in best mode. Like a cinema setting on the projector. A projector that can put out 2k isn't putting that out in watchable ht movie mode. Usually its for day time watching with the lights on. Or its great for 3d but other than that its not really used. So unless 3d is is a big need 2k would be the wrong stat to look for. I probably use half my projectors light output (around 600). On 3d I do switch it to high mode. But on 2d movies I bring it way down. Best picture is what I looked for.
  5. I have read the spec's on the Dayton drivers.they are similar to mines, 800 RMS/!1600 peak. At first I used limiters but watching the actual watts on the power console I was alway safe, even running the Real Trap test tone form 10-100 Hz at -5 on the avr with two sub. The max watts that I ever reached when I was running two subs was 1700. Now that I have four 18 in drivers I can run the test tones at 0 on the avr and max watts are 600-700 for one pair and the same for the other. That is around 350 watts per sub on a very demanding frequency sweep. The sub will measure around 110 db at the MLP at around 12 Hz. I also use a 5 db bass boost at 20 Hz with a PEQ bandwidth of about 0.7. This is fairly wide and the sub handle it with no problem. My room is around 5300 cu ft. which mean the subs work harder in that size room. It is also in the basement fully carpeted and suck up sound waves, lol. I wrote a Guide for using the I Nuke DSP on the Chane Cinema and Theater web site.http://www.chanemusiccinema.com/forum/showthread.php?47461-derrickdj1-guide-for-the-Inuke-series-of-amplifiers-with-CHT-subs It will walk you through all the steps for setup and integration of the subs with the I Nuke. Chane ask me to do it since some people were having trouble setting up their amps. I run my sub co-located, so I basically have two SS 18.2's. Sealed subs work best corner loaded to get boundry gain. Room gain will also help the low end. What calibration system are you using? Auddysse will boost the low end so you may not need a bass boost. Here is the formula to see where your room gain is coming in: Room gain formula for subwoofer: C is the speed of sound 1125 or 1130 ft/s Length of room in ft. is L C/2*L 1130/2* 20 ft.=28.5 Hz so you will start gain 12 db/octave starting at 28.5.. This mean at 14Hz you will be up 12 db. Room gain is not boundary gain which is usually 2-5 db.
  6. So called "high end" companies have needed to stir up quite a bit of courage to market horn loudspeakers, thanks to a widespread propoganda campaign against horns, starting in about 1970, and increasing over the next several decades. During that time, it was just about impossible to find "high end" direct radiators demonstrated in the same showroom as Klipschorns, La Scalas, or some good, fully or partly horn loaded JBLs, Altecs, Tannoys, or later, those of newer horn companies (was it Westlake?) etc. Many consumers, "golden eared" magazine reviewers, and some of the dealers themselves, simply believed the bad rap horns were getting. It might even be that some speaker designers believed it too, without much, or any, auditioning of horns, except in movie theaters and at rock concerts. A British book on designing your own recording studio matter of factly cautioned readers to avoid horns, because they were "more highly distorted," than dome or cone tweeters, when, in fact, the opposite is often true. A few years ago, Stereophile, a magazine that han been pretty anti-horn, reviewed La Scala II, saying it had "exceptionally smooth midrange and treble, and a spacious soundstage." They then pointed out that the high treble was a little "reticent," rather than too prominent. They called it "rich and warm," and "dynamic as all get out." They put it on their highly recommended list for speakers that don't go all the way down in the bass. The La Scala II Stereophile reviewed had thicker wood than the I, which some people thought improved the bass. Otherwise, it had the same midrange horn (K401), mid driver (K55X), and tweeter (K77F) as modern Klipschorns (except for those in which the front mounting tweeter flange is a permanent part of the otherwise identical tweeter -- the K77D --, rather than requiring a mounting bracket). As to whether the "Golden Ear" or "High End" speakers actually have flatter frequency response (in what room?), there was a curve of a Wilson someone posted on the Klipsch forum a few years ago that was fairly peak and dippy, in other words, probably relatively honest. If you futz around with your room enough (room treatments) and then use something like Audyssey, a curve can be made relatively flat. Of course, that's a good idea only if the system actually sounds better after you're done. With Audyssey, my Klipschorns sometimes measure about +/- 0.75 dB from about 800 to 7.5K at the main listening position. I say "sometimes" because any slight movement of the microphone can produce different results. With Audyssey they are still flat at 30 Hz with a hump at 45 Hz (and extend down to 24 Hz, with massive attenuation). On the high end, I use the Audyssey cinema roll off, and they are about 5 dB down at 15 K. I highly recommend Chris's Corner Horn Imaging FAQ We also added some diffusers.
  7. I owned 4 Khorns for 30+ years in different rooms, Lots of LaScalas, Cornwalls, Heresys, Fortes, Chorus I, Chorus II, RF's, B2, B3, etc. direct radiator subs, horn subs. I spent a LOT of time in the Palladium room at Klipsch Headquarters listening to lots of favorite music. I have made a few trips to Hope and spent time in the lab/test room AND PWK's home as his guest in 1985. I worked on a Jubilee Drone engineering project for a Pro Klipsch Dealer (Two K-31, Eminence, and 3 passives in the horn, etc., lots of measurements and listening, but I digress.................. The Palladiums were designed to compete with the B&W 802 type of speakers at $20,000 a pair. They are gorgeous and are THE best sounding bass reflex speaker I have ever heard. They are absolutely beautiful and if you have the cash, they are a showcase speaker that anyone should be proud of, no question. they are handmade in Hope, Arkansas, just like the Heritage speakers. They have custom drivers and horns that are unavailable anywhere else but Klipsch. They use all of the latest technologies and have a very refined balancing network. I have spent time with the engineer that designed it. That being said, I still think that the two best bass sections that Klipsch makes are the MWM and the Jubilee, period. Why? Because they are horns and both outperform the Khorn bass section. But they need active Xover networks to sound their best. After having horn subs, I'm not convinced that ALL speakers need subs to operate below the 40-60 Hz. range to minimize distortion and extend the bandwidth down to match the capabilities of the ruler flat response to 4 hz. from digital media we have had for over 30 years. The idea of a high pass filter at 30 hz. for energy robbing, high distortion turntable rumble on himalayan recycled production vinyl from crappy US record plants has been gone for a long time. Klipsch's best horn is the K402, which took me 4 years to find on the used market. I have also owned all the EV and JBL offerings with 2" throats. Yes, I have heard the K510 and it's amazing for it's size. I have even heard the PWK's own single Jubilee at his widow's home (not a very good test), which had an 800 Hz. custom horn on it. I was even at the CES show in 1999 and saw the Jube with the Mahogany horn on top, of which, there are only two in the world. Conclusion? If space and looks are not a problem, then the very best Klipsch has to offer is the KPT-MCM-II 4-way in various configurations, (look up the Pro Cinema section on Klipsch.com). The next best is the 3-way KPT-Jubilee/535-B (My speakers are basically a home made hybrid of those two) Both are available thought the Pro dealers, and both need Active Xovers AND Subwoofers, which now Klipsch makes a horn loaded Sub that weights 300 lbs. Both of these options sound better AND are CHEAPER than the Palladiums. You pay a lot of moolah for the looks, but it's still cheaper than a lot of, so called, "high end" speakers that cost tens of thousands of dollars more. To trump a Palladium's 3rd position, one could keep the Khorn's bass unit, PEQ it up a bit, and use the KPT-Jubilee/535 B's treble section. But it would not be a "Klipschorn" anymore although it would still be "pure Klipsch." So there you have it, all top 4 shoices, all need subs to get to 20 hz and below. All Klipsch speakers are a bargain. New or used.
  8. Please don’t email me or call about items listed or items that you know I have and “may list”. Just post that you “PM” me regarding the item you are interested in purchasing. Ask all you want about the item and I will post back in the thread. I'm selling stuff as I'm moving. I will have one audio room and that's it. I’m doing this sale in this manner as the last time I posted for sale stuff…..I got confused on who got dibs first and I basically got mixed up on who was who. 4 double stacked MWMs. No woofers. Wiring intact with terminal plates and fuse. The fuses need changed. One MWM is missing the cap for the fuse capsule. One MWM is missing the red plastic "screw on" for the speaker wire....which can be replaced at Parts express for cheap. They are with no handles as these were a permanent install version...like the new pair I have now. They have the Klipsch painted logo on the front which looks cool. They need cleaning and painting but could be left as is if new owner doesn't care. Also needs new screws for the woofer mounting and the woofer chamber cover. The foam rubber seals on the front cover are all good. $800 for all 4 (you need 8 woofers . As is. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- KPT MCM Grand 3 http://www.klipsch.com/kpt-mcm-3-grand Pair K402's with custom base better than the manufacture which is 'fixed". The ones I made are capable of changing the angle of the horn. NO driver. So the stand is "custom". The last two photos show an upclose of the inside the throat. That bare looking area on both horns were like that when I got them. They don't show up when you are sitting in a listening position. I have a flash upclose to show the paint-like defect. The flash on the camera makes the defect look non-black but that isn't the case. It's black like the rest of the horn. I never noticed they were there until one day I had a flashlight in there when I was making sure the installed compression driver was "flush". Pair Xii with stock driver. This is the 12" woofer horn loaded tractrix module. Can't get these anymore. Pair modern day MWMs loaded with stock woofers. So basically this is the MCM Grand 3 except there is no compression driver. There isn't a passive. I had this system up and running as of this summer and has been unhooked for the move. $1800. This is a steal folks. Sold as is though. The photos below posted with show the Modern day cinema MWM's with the Xii's on top. The blue tape on the Xii's is the painters tape that was on there for the movers. In the middle of the room and in center between The Grand system is the 4 total empty MWM's. These are from the KP days not KPT. These were in a club in Maryland. I paid a driver to go up there and get them. This stuff above is for pickup only. Takes 3-4 guys to pickup the loaded MWM's. If you work with me on pickup dates.....I can have some young bucks over here to load in your truck. You better have a big truck. I prefer a mailed check in advance with clearance or Paypal plus 3%. jc
  9. And yet PWK and Roy designed the Jubilee with 2-way as a prime goal..! Next time I talk to Roy I need to ask him how they could have made such a bad mistake..? Maybe Klipsch should hire some of our forum experts to straighten out this gross engineering screw-up... miketn Oh, come on, Mike. PWK's prime goal was to raise the high frequency cutoff in the bass horn to go 2-way with a 1 1/2 inch driver at 800 Hz.on a smaller horn (K 403?)with collapsing verticals to EQ up the hight end, not a 2 inch, like the TAD or K69 on the K402 CD horn which need passive or active PEQ to work right. Most of us have heard the 3-way vs. the 2-way, and some prefer the 3-way for various reasons. I like the 2 way just fine but the polar plots from ROY clearly show a narrowing at 8 Khz. For many people, that's not a big deal. Roy creating a 2-way solution was not a mistake, but it gives people a choice vs. the 3-way Jubillee, which is OFFICIALLY in the published Klipsch Cinema catalog. That's not a mistake either. You're a forum expert too. First Claude I know you are very proud of your system and you should be..! And I have no problem with anyone wanting 3-way, 4-way, etc... but as I posted General Statements being posted by many on the forum (I've been guilty myself I'm sure at sometime or another) serves more to confuse and misinform many people intentional or not and everyone needs to be carefull about doing so IMHO. Claude if you read the AES paper yes an increase in the upper frequency limit from the LF was the main goal met. Now read very carefully the first paragraph, introduction and background sections..! What was PWK and Roy's primary goal for the systems we now call Jubilee..? answer:..2-way..! No-where does it say what HF driver or horn was to be used to acheive the 2-way system...that came later but the primary goal was clearly to restore the Klipschorn to a 2-way system regardless of what names it eventually was called. Nothing wrong at all with anyone prefering the 3-way configuration but it's not because of the polar response narrowing that you mention since the K402 and K510 both start narrowing around 8khz in part because of the 2" driver exit dimension(frequency wavelength coming into play) and phase plug design of the driver used. As far as distortion is concerned I believe it is a mistake to assume that the 3-way is going to automatically have lower distortion. If the 4" diaphram behaves as a rigid piston without breakup/resonances then the increased area resulting in reduced excursion of the diaphram for a given SPL might have an advantage in distortion. The TAD TD4002 test very good in the control of breakup/resonances. A 2-way system has some real possible advantages in that comb filtering is potentialy less and yes even though the polars begin to narrow around 8khz they change gradually but importantly all frequency have a tighter acoustical center than is possible with a seperate midrange and tweeter's physical spacing allows . The 3-way system with crossover has potential issues with a smooth polar response because of the different horns/drivers and physical spacing potential involved in many systems. The 3-way system also has potential off axis frequency response isues due to varying polar responses due to different horns/drivers and again comb filtering issues in the crossover regions. miketn

  11. I have copied and pasted the specs for the two LF units below as set out in the Cinema Brochure. The Legend needs to be read in front of each line. I have not heard either system as yet. I have bought the Jubilee System with the KPT-KHJ-LF and the KPT-402-HF fitted with the K69 driver configuration as recommended by Roy. I have bought a pair of new LaScala in 1976 and I'm familiar with a fully horn loaded system. I have sound mixed bands through numerous fully horn loaded and also direct radiator systems over the years. Many different brands configurations and sizes. Fully horn loaded Quad 4 way systems are very powerful no compromise. For me the "fully" horn loaded system has less overall distortion and for me the experience is more realistic and instantaneous. For me the ported or bass reflex systems are slightly smudged. They sound excellent and most of the time I'm mixing bands through Bass reflex systems. When I get home and then listen to my LaScala I get that instantaneous exactness, like the sharp edges are still sharp and for me additional bass extension is of secondary importance to those sharp edges remaining intact. I think it's very personal. The Jubilee is a 400watt and the 415 is 1600watt. I believe that's the continuous power handling but it gives you an idea of the amplifier requirements. The "calculated" max output is 128db for the Jubilee and 133db for the 415. So on that basis you gain 3db each time you double your speaker so 2 jubilee gets 131db and 4 jubilee gets 134db. So the calculation is approximate and other factors can impact that as I have noted people say a jubilee is very equal to a 415 so power compression could be a factor. The 415 is outstanding for it's size and type as is the Jubilee so your choice is between a pair of best performers. The Jubilee being horn loaded will properly corner load. As far as I'm aware, a bass reflex design is not as successful in a corner as a horn loaded design. A sealed or infinite baffle is more successful in a corner than a bass reflex design, as far as I'm aware. Considering everything I could only choose the Jubilee. ****************************Legend: Frequency Response1 Power Handling2 Calc. Max. Cont. 12. Some dealers cannot carry all Klipsch lines. Some can't carry Heritage, Some carry Reference only. That dealer's comments were so strange that I suspect he is one of the "Reference only" guys. I believe that as you move from one well designed speaker to another, you almost always gain something and lose something. Going by reputation alone, the best Klipsch speakers are Klipschorns (Heritage), Jubilees (originally to be a redesigned Klipschorn, but now to be found on the cinema/professional page... communicate with Roy Delgado at Klipsch if you want one), certain other Klipsch professional/cinema speakers and the biggest Palladium. I have not heard the Jubilee or the Palladium yet, but suspect that I would prefer the Jubilee, just becaue of the design principles involved. Compared to other good speakers (B & W comes to mind) fully horn loaded Heritage speakers (Klipschorn, La Scala, Belle) might not show their (IMO) superiority at moderate volumes, but at both very low and rather high volumes there seems to be more "there, there" with those three Heritages ... I assume the same is true of the Jubilee, perhaps more so. Also, about 150 watts (short term) into one of the three Heritages mentioned above produces the same sound pressure level as somewhere between 800 watts to 2,000 watts into a typical 90 dB/1W/1M speaker (depending on placement; in a trihedral corner -- where the K-horn must be -- the figure would be about 2,000 watts). I have no idea where the italics in the above paragraph came from, but I can't get rid of them!

To Jub or not to Jub

the detail and imaging is incredibly better with the cinema line. I have the kpt-435-N top sections (kpt-335 hf/mf) and used them on a variety of bass bins. I replaced the k-69 driver with an 1132 so I could drop the crossover from 800 to 450. great sound and small foot print.

  15. Sorry...........to answer the question, they can be crossed as high as 500hz per Roy Delgado..............and I actually ran them in 2-way like that for a long time. Did it with passives and also active systems. Still very good. But better in 4-way though. The response curve you see here looks as it does because I have a 300hz LR 24db/octave crossover setting. The MWM has a suckout at 300hz and so that is a good place to cross it. If you look at the specs on the MCM-3 and MCM-4 Grand cinema products Klispch currently sells, you will see 300 is what they use. In fact I am using 300 and 800 in the picture above as the specs for the MCM-3 state. The RTA system is a good way to view what you actually get though. As you can see the actual acoustic crossover is not exactly where you think it would be with those settings. I just follow Klipsch specs and not worry about it. It would be easy to make it fall directly on 300 and 800 if I wanted that.
  16. Generally, flat panel solutions are thinner speakers so they could be wall mounted and flank your tv on both the left and right side as well as just below the tv set itself. Speakers are governed by pyhsics. Small bookshelf speakers for instance cannot perform the same as a floorstander. Why? The cabinet sizes are drastically different and create different accoustics. Flat panel solutions have their place in the market but in general, have less bass capabilities and almost always require a subwoofer to handle the low frequencies. They are great and because they are almost always wall mountable, its also a space saving solution for you. I do not know what the x-series availability is outside of the U.S. but as is, you have to find a dealer that sells them or purchase on the internet. I am not positive on their availability though as far as klipsch producing them and continuing to sell them to distributors. Its unfortunate, but a lot of the time we are governed by availability and purchase accordingly. The reference series is great for both gaming/music/cinema imo. I have played gran turismo on my ps3, i listen to music all of the time and when im not using it for those i am watching tv or movies. I find them to be very well rounded speakers over all. The synergy series is nothing to overlook as well. I am not a big fan of the synergy styling, i prefer nice square or elegantly designed speaker cabinets. For the money you can spend, i would choose the reference line each and every time. Also keep in mind 5.1 vs 7.1, most soundtracks made for movies are still in 5.1 so its not necessary to always have a 7.1 but its certainly not frowned upon either. The XF-48 speakers have a built in amplifier that send power to all of its speakers. It has a RCA input (low level) and speaker terminals (high level) input. Both of these inputs (for this type of speaker) serve as signal inputs. Some receivers have rca outputs which allow the receiver to send signals out for the different channels. This is used when you want to use an amplifier that is separate from the one in the receiver itself. Lower end receivers commonly do not have the option of multi channel rca out connectors. In a case of this, you use the speaker terminals instead and use the receivers amplifier speaker hookups as the signal wire. RCA (low level) wires produce a cleaner signal because it is strictly a signal wire. Power wire carry the "signal" in the form of energy to power the speakers themselves. This type of signal is "dirty" in comparison to RCA (low level) signals because its meant to drive the speaker and make it work. The amp on the XF-48 is designed to take either signal and produce a clean sound so you can use either option with the same results, it gives you, as the end user options to get your speakers hookedup. In the case of a person just wanting a 2 channel setup, the XF-48 can be usesd very easily. The user would just purchase 2 shielded RCA cables (1 for each channel) and they would hook it up to their tv set. Most tv sets, even from years ago have audio out for the left and right channel in the form of an RCA connector on the tv. This is a simple upgrade for someone who has just been using the in tv speakers and it provides a substantial upgrade to sound quality with the simple ease of buying 2 rca cords! The concept of being selfpowered is great for a situation like i just described but for a lot, we prefer to have the option of powering our speakers with our own choice of amp/receiver. A tube amp is basically the first type of amplifier used. Remeber the old radios, the first ones to come out? Those were tube radios. The first computers were tube computers. Tubes are just like transistors (on/off switches), they have been replaces because tubes are large and they are extremely power inefficient in comparison to transistor radios and amps. Tube amps however provide what most describe as "warmth" to music. They are purely analog and simple in comparison to transistor amps. They have several other charactertistics that make them "better" than transistor amps but this is stuff that you should worry about after you have grasped a bit more of the audio world . Just trying to keep things simple for you so its easier to get a hold of things in the beginning. Basically tube amps in all are sought after audiophile equipment that are expensive (10 watts X 2 can cost you like 800-1000 bucks). Its a different animal. Timbre matching is the act of matching your speakers so that they "sound" the same. The sound from a .5" tweeter and the sound from a 1" tweeter will sound different. This matching is noticable in the tweeters since the waves are far smaller than bass waves and the human ear picks up on those subtle differencess. Even if your tweeters are the same size, different models and types will also produce different sounds that can be detectable to the human ear. Sometimes you can get lucky and match different sized tweeters or types and models and things sound great. The best way though is to buy speakers that are matched as a set. If you want to explore things more than that, its best to get confirmation from others that a "mismatched" set would work out even though they werent matched by the manufacturer. The most important timbre matches occur in your front left/right and center channels as these are the most used speakers and the dialogue and music comes from them. Your rear speakers arent as important and you can get away with not timbre matching, in the end, they arent used as much ~20% of the time. It is best though to always timbre match your whole set where possible. All in all, none of this should be above your capabilities as a hobbyist. It takes time to learn a lot of this but some of the best learning you will do is on the job hooking it all up and messing with settings. Hell, you might wind up with a receiver that someone else here has and could walk you through doing something. We are a wealth of information here and willing to help, guide and advise. You are talking lire so you are located where? price wise, if you are outside the U.S. i dont think i'd be much help guiding you as to where you could purchase as i don't know where nor do i know the price differences.
  17. Yeah the McIntosh are way outta my price range too.... but maybe hopefully someday and they will last forever without much effort. Of course for HT you really don't want to be distracted by the sexy blue meters. For some applications a lot of people use pro audio amplifiers. Very popular with pro cinema and probably work very well with the THX Ultra II? I'm sure you'll get some good recommendations. Maybe the best approach is try to find somebody with similar speaker set up you can go hear and is willing to swap your amplification in place for theirs as the room can affect sound sooooooo much. So now I read your original post. Wanting to upgrade to HDMI capability.... might be a time to consider going with a pre-amp / processor? Especially if you're current receiver has jumpers so can use amplifiers independently of pre-amp processor section. Not sure that's a common feature or not. I would say if you're happy with crrent receivers amplification then same brand for new receiver and you should be happy as a clam but I think somewhere on this Forum I've read where a comapny's (highly respected like Denon maybe?) newer receivers amplifier sections lost some of the gutsiness of the previous generation. Probably went with a wimpier power supply. Or as Fini would say it lost it's 'nads. As far as Anthem I've read good things but no real idea. An $1,800 is worth $1,800 if one can afford it. A lot of good used equipment can be found but upgrading to HDMI you might want the latest generation as I think it's evolved a bit.
  18. Hello, Which amplifier do you recommend for 2 Klipsch RF-82 MKII and one Klipsch SW-110. I'd like to have a polyvalent system (HiFI and home cinema) and I prefer quality/price rather than power/price Don't plane to spend more than 800$
  19. RB-61 SHOULD BE THE BEST SPEAKER KLIPSCH MAKES. AND A 7 SPEAKER SETUP WITH RB-61s, RS-62/RS-52s and RC-62/RC-52 WILL SOUND THE BEST? Hi Everybody, I am pretty sure I will be raising a furore here and will get a lot of Flake from all you Klipsch Fans. So the disclaimer first: I am also a Klipsch Fan may be less experienced. I have never heard a speaker better than a Klipsch even if it was twice or three times expensive and will never buy anything else apart from Klipsch. So my concern is that if anybody asks for a recommendation for a new home theater speakers in the forums here, it seems like the fans out here almost always recommend RB-81 or RF-82 if the buyer is on budget and RF-83 if the budget is not limiting. My SETUP, I have 3 RVX-42 for LCR, 2 RS-42 for sides and2 RB-81, an energy S10.3 and a mirage Prestige S10. So Pretty decent subwoofers (almost no boominess or distortion) except they cant produce 18Hz test tone. They go down to 21Hz which is pretty much what you get if your budget is ~$500-800 for one subwoofer or the limit on most Klipsch Subwoofers anyways. Woofer Size: After going through an old review of RB-81s( http://www.hometheatermag.com/compactspeakers/1006klipsch81/index2.html ) , the data and specifications were so impressive that I could not pass through RB-81s and also because there was no data for RB-61s (although specification wise compared to Rb-81s, it seemed they migh have a lower extension because of port-noise). Going by my gut feeling, I would have bought RB-61s instead if they were smaller but since their dimensions are almost the same size as RB-81s(except for height which does not matter in my case), I went for RB-81s. My Requirements: Clarity The most important thing I want from my system is clarity and imaging. My RVX-42 are amazing, they sound the way anything should, perfect vocals, clear highs and clear midrange. RS-42 are very similar in sound but I feel they are a bit boomy (slightly but noticeable boominess which will be called "fullness or deep"). Now comes the RB-81, sure the Bass is unbeatable and goes down to almost 50Hz with no loss of fullness or distortion, but the downside is even though the mid-range (Upper, mid or Lower) is not missing, it is not as clear (dynamic) as the RVX-42, so why would somebody recommend me a RB-81 and not RB-61s. Although both have a very flat frequency response, RB-81 are not as dynamic as RVX-42s. The 8" woofers start and stop slower than the 4" drivers and it follows from the simple physics principle of moment of inertia, a heavier thing will be harder to start or stop and so will be less dynamic. Sure the RB-81 are powerful and instruments sound fuller but the guitar strings are muddled (slightly but noticeable) and not as clear as my RVX-42s. So again, why would somebody recommend me RB-81 than say RB-61. Both 61s and 81s go well beyond 80Hz (normal crossver for a sub) or even 70Hz (if you prefer Xing-over your speakers even lower). I believe they will sound clean (without any port noise upto 55Hz), considering a 12db/octave slope, you should have no output difference between the 61s and 81s as sounds lower than 55Hz will never reach the speakers at all and will be overwhelmed by the subwoofers. So my main question is Do you guys just want bass with no midrange clarity at all and Yes, I am sounding arrogant here because half of you are self proclaimed audiophiles (including myself)? . Is all you need is a lot of distortion free bass and some high quality high end? Come on guys. Bookshelves Vs. Floorstanders: Now coming to RF-82 or say RF-62 or say any klipsch floorstander compared to bookshelves, the woofers used are generally the same and many times even the total power is similar(RB-81 and RF-82 are rated 150W each). Two woofers will cause vertical lobbing, a bigger cabinet will cause more internal resonance and the last thing is the higher port noise. Compared to RF-82s, RB-81s have absolutely no port noise or no vertical lobbing, so why should RF-82 be a better speaker. Smaller size, front firing port(placement is easier), adjustable height(by use of stands) should make RB-81s, superior in every way to RF-82 but everybody seems to love the RF-82s. The fact that two woofers can never be identical and will cause interference issues does not help either. To make them sound fuller, why wont you buy a much cleaner subwoofer (or say 2) rather than buying a RF-7.The subwoofers I have sound clean at exceptionally high volumes which rattle my house something I believe an RF-7 can never do that by itself. So Woofer Size: 5.25"~6.5">4">>8">>10" (Bass Vs. Speed) About power handling, I have an 18 by 14 room and my sweet spot is 12ft from the front, my receiver is is onkyo 706 (110watt per channel and the maximum is #80). At #38(with all the stereo Speakers fed with the same stereo sound, LEFT to all left and vice versa), around 30W per channel or less, it is really loud if not deafening and speakers can easily go upto #55(say 50W per channel) without any distortion or compression and I bet you will be deaf within 15 minutes at that volume (thanks to high efficiency/sensitivity of Klipsch Speakers). So why RF-7s >> RF-83 >> RF-82 >> RB-81 >> RB-61. I would prefer RB-61 any day over all others, even if I had the money. In a 7.1 setup, Powerwise: RF-7s = RF-83 = RF-82 = RB-81 = RB-61=RVX54>RVX-42 or a combination thereof. Tweeter Size: I cannot compare the tweeters in all these speakers because definitely a 1.75" Tweeter will sound better >1.25" > 1" >0.75" tweeter in the 1500Hz to 5000Hz but then the output higher than 5000-8000 (second, third and higher harmonics) will be better in the order 0.75">1">1.25">1.75". Again power is not the main criteria but the clarity, flat frequency response and even reproduction from say 2000Hz to 22,000Hz. I understand that 0.75" will be a bit weak(and can blow out) and will be missing 2000Hz to 4000Hz but thats why I think 1" or 1.25" is a good compromise. I think 1.25" should be the best (in case of original RF-83 and RF-63) but I love the treble from my 1" RVX-42s tweeters (RB-81s have the similar but better) almost even sounding in the entire range, so why would somebody rave about new RF-7s. Tweeter Size: 1.25"~1">1.75">0.75" Horn Shape: Last thing is the horns, My RVX-42s' horns are much better than the RB-81s horns. If you are in the sweet spot, the difference is not that significant (RVX-42 are still better), but as you slighly move away from the sweet spot, you can hear the honk from the RB-81s horns whereas RVX-42's circular horn has no honk in them even at 45 degrees, off or on the axis, they sound much more open than RB-81s. My anger arises from the fact because of the fans' opinion and popularity the RVX-42s(or say RSX-4 and RSX-5) got discontinued which IMHO are much better and open sounding. I have not heard the ICON X series yet but I believe their new horn should be better than the present or the past square horns any day. A deeper horn may mean better directionality/power at the axis but it also means louder honk.I thought Tractrix XT horn (or the exponential horn) was the best horn ever made as it is more exponential than circular or straight flared square horns. Horn Shape: XT Better than Circular better than Square It seems like in this country, Music means "BASS, BASS and BASS". A 10" woofer cannot and will not be as nicely sounding (mainly vocals and piano) as a 6.5" . Period. 99% of vocals (except for the strong "F" or "Pa"do not go beyond 80Hz) so ideally a 4" or a 5.25" or at maximum 6.5" woofer should be sufficient. But people still love their RC-7s. Woofer Size: 5.25"~6.5">4">>8">>10" (Bass Vs. Speed) In the end, I love Klipsch and hate that Novel products like RVX-42s, Reference Cinema Series and ICON Series are turned down by self-proclaimed audiophiles. Is Klipsch just succumbing to your BASS needs or the bigger bulkier speakers are actually better? Not only the smaller ones are better but also that they are more compact and the only Klipsch products that can kill off competition from Cr*ppy speakers from BOSE. [I wanna see BOSE CORP. dead someday.] [Would love to see the mirage elliptical surround or Energy's Kevlar Woofers on Klipsch Speakers Someday)
  20. ...since we are talking about Theater speakers (home or otherwise) wouldn't a better analogy be that it is like comparing two race car manufacturers but one is not winning???... Bill Please! No way can their stuff keep up with Klipsch when compairing = speakers. IF they could, they would hold more than 50 % of the US Cinema and 60% of Asia and South Amreica new houses instead of Klipsch. We are and have been the leader in Cinema sound for years. As for a place to get the pro line....Contact our customer service and they can get you in contact with a Klipsch sales rep for your area. He can hook you up with a dealer you can buy from. Khorns will do the job no problem, IF you have a corner or can build one for the speakers. They must have one to work. The La Scala may be a better choice. No corner needed and will reach the volume you want no problem... Don't forget your amps...your biggest and best friend in something like this is "HEADROOM" I use a factor of 5...If I need 20Watts to reach the volume I want, I use a 100 Watt amp. 1-800-554-7724 Okay, I don't want to start a flame-war here, but I think you simply do not know anything about Seaton Sound speakers. "No way they can keep up with Klipsch" you say? Have you heard of their Catalyst speaker? It consists of 8" coaxial midrange with a Neodymium compression tweeter plus two 12" sealed woofers. Secondly, this speaker is TRI-amplified internally. 300 watts powering the tweeter, 700 watts powering the midrange, and 1000 watts powering the 12" woofers. This speaker can hit 130 dB.Click the following link to see the Catalyst: http://www.seaton-sound-forum.com/post?id=3044980 Secondly, you said that since Seaton Sound (which is a new compay by the way, I think started in 2005 or around there) does not produce speakers for movie theaters they must "suck." With this "conclusion" of yours, I guess it is safe to say that Renault cars are superior to Porsche cars simply because Renault participates in Formula One while Porsche does not. Lastly, visit the Seaton Sound forum and/or the AVS Forum to see how Seaton Sound speakers are rated by USERS not reviewers. There are a number of Klipsch owners who have converted to Seaton Sound or JTR (which is another compay like Seaton Sound). Again, not starting a flam-war, just stating the facts. By the way, I actually do own Klipsch speakers. And not just any Klipsch speakers, but the RF-7s and I in fact do think they are good speakers.

  23. Jack- In 720P lcd projectors I would look at the Epson Home Cinema 720 or the Panasonic PT-AX200. Both of these sell new in the $9xx range and you can probably find a like new one used for $7-800. I just sold my Epson Home Cinema 720 last week and I still believe it is the best value (bang for buck) out there right now as far as picture quality. If you are looking at new 1080P lcd projectors (sharper image, better contrast, and better blacks) I would look at the Panasonic AE-3000 or the Epson Home Cinema 6500 UB. Both of these will probably be <$2500. You also might be able to still find some discontinued new or like new Epson Home Cinema 1080UB or the Panasonic AE-2000 in the $13-1700 price range (Ebay or craigslist). If you are just looking at current models, I would check out projectorreviews.com for a descent review of many projectors. The new yearly lineup of projectors is usually announced in the fall and often times you can get a very good deal on closeout models.
  24. Maybe some of us are missing the boat? I just came from a neighbors house, he is using 3 KPT 325's, 4 of the THX Ultra 120 Subs, (Up front) 4 KS 7800 side surrounds and 2 KL 7800 for the rears. I am extatic he is using big Klipsch speakers to no end. He was at my house with the La Scala's and was blown away.. His set up, should be incredible!! The room is still about a 9 months away from completion. It will be in all of the magazines I am sure. It is just stunning!! I can't wait to hear it... Anyone use the KPT 325's at home? 25. Here's a warning that was posted on Craigslist last week about people selling speakers out of a van Not worth $50 New DiVinci DV-606 msrp $3659SCAM Kirsch K3 DA-803 - $50 Reply to: sale-482509394@craigslist.org Date: 2007-11-18, 9:33AM CST Please Copy now, repost somewhere and share this info with others. The scammers don't want anyone to know about their scam so they will flag and remove this ad ! Do a good deed and save someone from getting scammed ! The speakers sold by the speakermen are of exceptionally poor quality, typically obtained for less than $50 from a local distributor. The speakers themselves have been reported as potentially damaging to any amplifier they are connected to. The risk of damage stems from an impedence curve that in some cases may drop below 2 ohms, which may overheat, short out, or permanently damage an amplifier not designed to handle such loads. Do a search for " white van speakers " you'll see how this scam goes Guy in suv or van drives up to you has these $3000 speakers , extras ?? You can have em for a deal you can't pass up . He will try to get you to give him $50 or more up to $1500.00 for these $40 china speakers. Look out for the guy in the suv with the cock and bull story about the extra home theater system he's got to unload. He will tell you it's worth something crazy like 2000 or 3000 dollars show all kinds of crap like receipts , invoices , magazines , ads sheets, etc. He'll even point you to the company website to prove they are worth the 3 grand. Don't be fooled ! So when he lowers his price to $100.00 you'll think you got the deal of a lifetime. $3000 speakers for $ 100 bucks , no you got a crap set of $40 speakers and paid $100 or more for them. Just do a search for "white van speakers" and you'll see that not only are they worth only 40 bucks shipped from china , they may also be UNSAFE and damage your system. Watch out for the speaker guys in suv's or pickup trucks and vans selling home theater equipment. Many of the sales take place in the parking lots of Best Buy, Home Depot, Circuit City , Banks , Carwashes , Gas Stations , Construction sites , etc heck they will even flag you down while you are driving down the road. Do not fall for the white van speaker scam , they are looking to rip you off ! If you see them , drop a dime , CALL A COP , let's get these scumbags of our streets. Get your phone out , Take a PICTURE , get the PLATE number and CALL the Local POLICE !! Law enforcement WILL issue citations, as rarely do the speakerguys obtain the proper permits and license to sell "out of a vehicle". In Pennsylvania, the act of selling white van speakers is punishable by up to five years in prison and up to a fine of $10,000 . Here's one of many reviews I found ... I've been involved in the audio industry for over 25 years, and have to say that these speakers have the worst components I've ever seen. As someone who has built and repaired speakers, and written published audio reviews well before the Internet came around, I am appalled at the chutzpah shown by manufacturers and sellers of this junk. The 'reviews' and 'guides' that speak positively of these things have undoubtedly been posted by those who stand to profit from the sale of these inferior items. Take the Kirsch, Theatre Research, Genesis Media Labs (Genesis PHYSICS was a good brand in the 1980's) and DiVinci speakers, with their glossy ads and websites full of meaningless techno-babble and claims of outrageous 'retail' prices - not that any reputable retailer would carry these dogs. There are good reasons why they are mostly sold out of the back of white vans, and here, where comparison to good equipment is impossible. Most recently peddlers of the Genesis Media Lab and DiVinci's have trumpeted an ad taken out by the company, and purchase of a booth at an electronics show as evidence that this is an established brand-when you have the kind of profit margins based upon $ 50 worth of components in a "$ 3600" package, I suppose you can afford a booth or an ad. Imagine if a peddler of fake Rolexes', or 'Rolex quality' watches posted a website claiming that their junk that cost maybe $ 50 to manufacture is worth thousands - that is basically the case we have here. I've had the opportunity to take apart a number of these speakers, and all I can say is if you read Wikipedia and other search results you obtain from Googling the term "White Van Speakers' or 'White Van Scam' the conclusion that the components are of 'exceptionally poor quality' is well founded. For example, as I write this, there are at least 3 pairs of the "K803 Prodigy" speakers being posted on E Bay for $ 1500 or more, yet superior drivers (the speaker drivers -woofers, tweeters, midranges and the like) can be had for $ 15 or less per driver. The internal electronics such as the crossovers, are by far, the absolute worst I've ever seen in nearly 3 decades as a hobbyist. The DiVinci hucksters have the nerve to advertise their 'high energy crossover', which is a $2 piece of junk - a good crossover is complex, not inexpensive, and is critical to sound quality. Even the glossy cabinets are made of cheap, lightweight wood, whose resonances distort the already awful sound, and lack the internal bracing you will find on quality speakers. The drivers on the Kirsch and DiVinci "$ 3000 pair" (K803- DiVinci 1740-Dahlton- same speaker) are pretty much the same as on another set of these towers sold under an earlier "White Van Scam" name that a friend bought for $ 59 in a local pawn shop- one set of DiVinci's' is listed for $ 2500 buy it now - that is on line piracy. Just for fun, we compared these Kirsch 803 beasts' to a pair of Infinty SM-255's bought off of E Bay for $ 300, using both analogue and digital sources, receivers and high end separate electronics. A sound level meter was used to ensure that the listening occured at the same volume level. One of the girlfriends said it best : the Kirsch sounded like a clock radio compared to the Infinity's and one thought that a clock radio might sound better. Technical measurements confirmed what our ears told us - a ragged response curve that is the worst I've ever seen, bar none. Maybe it was unfair - the Infinity's weigh 77 pounds versus 28 for the Klipsch... er Kirsch - but then the Kirsch is a $ 3000 speaker, the Infinities were $ 1000 new ... the weight alone should tell you just what junk the White Van Speakers are. We also compared the Kirsch with a vintage set of Klipsch KG-3.5's which you can get for around $ 200-250 - needless to say they blew the K-803 Prodigy away. We've also performed listening tests comparing the "$ 2495"- oh please - Kirsch K3 home theatre system to a vintage set of Infinity Qb speakers dating back to the 1980's, which you can buy for $ 150 or so; a Samsung Home Theatre in a box and to Logitech Z-5300 and Klipsch Pro Media 5.1 computer speakers, hooked to a 5.1 receiver via the headphone jack ( a decent option for a small room). Experienced listeners suggested the best use of the Kirsch's was as a boat anchor or firewood, kids unanimously preferred the other sets and as one eloquently put it - ' the fancy ones stink like poo.' You would be much better off with a used set from Energy, Polk, or another quality speaker company. I also had the (dis) pleasure of listening to a set of the "$ 3600" DiVinci's often posted here - even the best electronics cannot make a silk purse out of these sow's ears. We compared the DiVinci 607 model to a Polk RM-6800 5.1 home theater set up that can be had for $ 400 or less- $3200 less than theDiVinci's so called retail value. It was no contest-- as my 12 year old put it 'where did all the instruments go' - there was no category- NONE- imaging, detail, tightness of bass- you name it- where the DiVinci's were remotely competitive. Not only are the speakers unspeakably bad, the 'receivers' included with the DiVinci, Theatre Research, Digital Research and other "White Van Brands' lack even basic AV functions such as Dolby and DTS processing, and HDMI and component video outputs -as well as measuring and sounding horribly - try watching "Master and Commander" with one of these pieces of 'bleep'- a used Denon, Yamaha or Onkyo at any price is light years superior. With profit margins that would make oil companies jealous, I can see where they could now buy ads in magazines - one E Bay posting claims they are an 'established high end speaker' - you would have to be high to consider these anything but the low level junk they are. Scam is not a strong enough term, and these have earned their place on rip-off report.com White Van Speaker List Acoustic Response Series 707 Acoustic Image 3311 / 3312 Acoustic Lab Technology Acoustic Monitor Acoustic 3312 Studio Monitor Acoustic Response Advanced Sound Technologies AST X2 1055 Audiofile 583LR Audiofile 835LR Audiofile THX 6.1 Audio Tech Dahlton KV 1500 Dahlton KV 2500 TI Speakers Dahlton AV 5.1 THX DanWave DW-6 DanWave DW-606 DanWave DW-607 DanWave DW-608 Dan Wave DW-1000 Diamond Audio Prodigy DA803 http://www.divincisound.com Divinci Sound DiVinci Innovative Sound & Bass Divinci Sound D6 D-6 Divinci Sound DV7010 DV-7010 Divinci Sound DV6030 Dv-6030 Divinci Sound DV505 DV-505 Divinci Sound DA6.1 DA-6.1 Divinci D-52 Divinci DV-606 Divinci DV-607 Divinci DV-608 Divinci DV-1420 Divinci DV-1450 Divinci DV-1412 Divinci DV-1450 Divinci DV- 607 Divinci DV-2150 Divinci DV-2100 Denmark Denmark Loud Speaker E830LR Digital Audio DHT 5.1 Digital Audio SL-3810 Digital Audio DA 2000SL / 2000CS Digital Audio 2000 Digital Audio 2002 Digital Audio 2012 7.1 Digital Audio Professional Speaker Systems SL-3810 Digital Audio Skyline 900-SL Digital Audio SL-3910 Speakers Digital Audio 2003 DA 5.1 Pro-Series III Digital Dogg Audio Digital Pro Audio Digital Pro Audio SL-T 2.8 Digital Research 5.1 Pro Series Digital Research DA 5.1 Pro Series III Digital Research DR-1000 Digital Research DR-2810 Digital Research DR-1610 Digital Research DR-1611 Dogg Digital Dynalab Epiphany Audio speakers Elite Audio Elite Audio EA-505 Elite Audio EA-608 Elite Audio EA-1620 Elite Audio EA-7012 Epic Sound 7.1 Fleetwood Audio Genesis Genesis Media Labs Genesis G-6.1 Digital Series Genesis G-505 Genesis G-506 Genesis G-507 Genesis G-608 Genesis G-609 Genesis G-610 Genesis G-1420 Genesis G-1620 Genesis G-1630 Genesis G-2810 Genesis G-2815 Genesis R-2810 Genesis G-2840 Genesis G-2850 Genesis G-2870 Genesis G-2875 Genesis G-2880 Genesis G-2885 Genesis G-2950 Genesis G-2960 Genesis G-6030 Genesis G-6035 Genesis G-6040 Genesis G-7012 http://www.genesismedialabs.com Grafdale Hauffman Innovative Sound Digital Pro Audio Kirsch K3 Kirsch K10 Kirsch Prodigy K803 http://www.kirschloudspeakers.com Linear Phase studio monitors http://matrixaudioconcepts.com Matrix Audio Concepts Matrix MX-1300 MX1300 MX1300S MX-404 MX-550 MX-6160 MX-2060 MX-605S Millenium Millenium MTS-2006p Millenium MTS-2208 Millenium MTS-2328 Millenium MTS-2300 Millenium MTS-2605 Millenium MTS-3100 Millenium MTS-3200 http://www.mtsspeakers.com Omni Audio PSD (2.8) PTS PT-5500S PTS (Precision Transducer Systems) http://www.ptswoofers.com Palermo VA6.1 Palermo VA 6.1 Paradyme Pro Audio Pro Dynamics Pro Platinium Series Pro Dynamics PD-9600 Proline Acoustic Protecsound PT-5000 digital surround sound system speakers Samurai 518 Skyline AD-900SL Skyline Digital Denmark 800 or 900 "series" Studio Tech (Pro Poly Series) Theater Innovations (Ti 5100) TI-440MR TI~440MR TI-440R TI~440R TI-440M TI~440M TI-5100 TI~5100 TI-5150T TI~5150T TI~1250 TI-1250 TI~1255 TI-1255 TI~1300 TI-1300 TI~1650 TI-1650 TI~1655 TI-1655 TI~6000SD TI-6000SD TI~6100 TI-6100 TI~1750 TI-6200 http://www.theater-innovations.com Theater Logic http://theaterlogichomecinema.com/ Theater Logic L5ti Theater Logic L6 Theater Logic L8TI 5.1 Theater Logic T 2400 Theater Logic T 2450 http://www.trtheaterresearch.com Theater Research TR-501 Theater Research TR-900 Theater Research TR-1120 Theater Research TR-1400 Theater Research TR-1410 Digital Sound Speakers Theater Research TR-2380 Theater Research TR-2810 Theater Research TR-5210 Professional Home Theater Theater Research TR-5160 Theater Research TR-6000 Theater Research TR-6100 Digital Sound/5.1 Home Cinema Theater Research TR-8010 Theater Research TR-8810 Theater Research Pro Series III Professional Home Ultra Digital Labs
