Why feed the Troll(s)

Woofers and Tweeters

I think that is the reason many sites have an "ignore" button.

In case folks don't know, there is an "Ignore Preferences" setting in your Profile page you can set up to ignore whichever members you decide.

Which I'm guessing you don't use?????  If so, you probably wouldn't be reading this.

The trolls are an important part of any forum... More prescription meds for the members; high blood pressure and more Prep-H also factored into that observation...  I used to aggravate them in the years gone by (the old Forum BS, section, etc...). But DWI, Carl, Jim, et. al. are right, good and true.

You can't win... But if carefully crafted with the intent to make a troll get stupid (for the amusement of all... LOL), then it is worth some satisfying, if not cathartic..., humor!!

Here is a link to the article from Psychology Today:

https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/your-online-secrets/201409/internet-trolls-are-narcissists-psychopaths-and-sadists

I wonder if WVU is aware of any authoritative articles or books on the subject.

There is a marked difference between a troll and someone who expresses a different view. BUT, from the few articles I have read, the way you agravate them the most is to ignore them, act as though you don't see their posts.

I think that is the reason many sites have an "ignore" button.

I am not aware of researched books or articles on those subjects.  I'm sure they are out there, it's just not my area of expertise.  In general I work with adolescents and their families in therapy.

I am well versed on the "classics."  Depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, those sort of things.  I know narcissism in the clinical sense but modern culture has corrupted the classic meanings and has imposed its own definition.  I'm not real on-board with on-line trolls being "sadistic."  Sadistic is when boys break the legs of animals because it's funny and they don't know it's wrong, or they know it's wrong and do it anyway.

I can't tell you how many times I have gone into a home with an out-of-control adolescent to have the parent tell me the problem was bi-polar and they knew that because they looked it up on the internet, so I don't know what I'm talking about when I tell them it's a lack of effective parenting.  There is a whole world of professional knowledge beyond the "internet" knowledge.

For the record dwilawyer, you would make a good therapist.  You have good common sense, you seem pretty grounded to me, and you are analytical in your approach to problem solving.  All I have from my psychology training is a few terms you may not know in the clinical sense, but what counseling really boils down to, is professional common sense.

I agree with all the common sense suggestions I've seen.  If you come across a topic you don't like, don't read it, and certainly you don't have to comment on it.  Just move on to something you do like.

There's no need to "call someone out," call them names or argue with them.   Simply "don't feed the trolls."

Sadist! Sadist! Sadist!

At the risk of using an obscure reference, the thread reminds me of the Salem Witch Trials.

Everyone is entitled to objections and dislikes and preferences with lots of indignation. Me too. My indignation is the worship of porn here. It is said the Internet was built on the back of the porn industry. I'm sure that has some truth in it.

Monitors frequently express concerns that "this is a corporate web site" and I do wonder at times how all the mostly juvenile, but plentiful, porn references are taken? And I'm not even a prude! As to controversy or porn, I'll take the former any day. Although, I understand that the majority supports the latter.

You can't please everyone. Don't feed the porn hounds!

P.S. The wife says thanx for the heads up on her Khorns, she still remembers you.

You two are welcome. I remember when OPUS texted me to alert me to the ones I picked up. This is a great forum to be a part of. What makes it great - the members....most of them anyway.

That would be ideal, but several times it is a topic of interest and people do want to be a part of a logical discussion.
