DizRotus
A fascinating individual. His ability to deal with his ALS-like condition was admirable. May he RIP. I spent all day Friday with a friend who is a paraplegic Vietnam War veteran. He was again an inspiration as he drove us around Tucson in his heavily modified Toyota SUV. He enjoys unusual success in Casinos. He described taking significant winnings at Christrmas time and driving around Tucson giving $50 bills to those he felt in need of some Christmas cheer. Observing Hawking, my friend, and others persevere and succeed in the face of adversity, puts the inconveniences in my life in perspective. Now a shameles plug for my friend’s new book, The Reunion by Thomas Conrad. He describes it as a novel, not a memoir. It’s available from Amazon. If you read it, I’d like your opinion. 5
-js-
ditto what you said Neil about how Hawking sort of kicked adversity in the teeth (or elsewhere), continuing to persevere in spite of such challenges presented him. and we sometimes think we have it rough. yes, sometimes we do. but those that do press on like your friend and like SH have my respect & admiration. RIP Mr. Hawking. many of us don't even grasp the importance of your contributions. but some of us did fully comprehend & appreciate your contributions on The Big Bang Theory

K5SS
Hard to beat his body of work, even with a mostly broken body. RIP Mr. Hawking.
Ceptorman
It's ironic that Einstein was born on PIE day, and Hawking died on PIE day.
DizRotus
Those are coincidences for sure. Another coincidence is that Hawking was born 8 January 1942, the 300th anniversary of the death of Galileo.

ACV92
Bummed about Hawking. Great mind for sure. Loved watching any shows he did, etc. I could've tried reading papers of his but it would have been a waste of those pages time. Glad though that @BigStewMan can keep us moving forward with String Theory, Black Holes, Dark Matter, and the like. Phew, that is a relief. Not to mention, Toys R Us is folding as well. Damn technology is killing everything. Hawking warned that AI would be the end of us. Terminator, The Matrix, may not be far away. But, what do I know, I'm a peasant. Just not looking forward to when my toaster tries to actively end me.

I'm feeling much better knowing this. Some of his last ideas about earth and aliens were cool, just ridiculous levels of common sense. An amazing person. Rxonmymind
Aside from his great mind which I admire for sure it was his ability to admit when he was wrong. That is the mark of a wise man. Under peer review on some theory of a black hole if memory serves right his colleagues pointed out an error. That's when I was impressed with him.
