Fine furniture oil is what the Instruction Manual calls for; have used Lemon Oil on mine for over 20 years; good for maintenance, but not for cleaning/restoration.

The wood question is a good subject, glad you brought it up Duder. Plywood gets used in my shop. How about a spud build thread.

Build them with a better wood, you won't be sorry, also OSB is not very smooth depending on what kind of finish your thinking of. I like the spud, I only have one and would like to build another for the other corner, it's amazing what it can do with small drivers, it's a cheap build for a good sub. There is also the bigger brother of the Spud using bigger drivers if that fit your space better ?

My 1 year old Panasonic Plasma doubles as a Space Heater; nice now, not so nice in summer.

Make sure the cans are secure so there will be no rattles before installation. You can use good caulk and/or soundproofing self adhesive sheet if you run into this problem.

OSB is hard and pretty tough, but not on the edges, if you hit the edge with a hammer it starts to flake and crushed easily from the edge you would not want to build any kind of cabinet with it it's designed as a cheaper replacement for CDX(cheap) plywood. For one thing there usually is some strands that become unglued on the outside and could vibrate. True it has no voids but that's it's only attribute, do not trust anyone who builds anything serious with OSB , If they can't do better than that they just don't care, really cheap or really misinformed.

I've already busted sheet rock in that room for audio once. That was plenty.

I don't use my two channel system nearly as much as I do the solid state system. Today I was listening to it and after about 20 minutes the music started to really draw me into it. It may have something to do with the tubes warming up or the 2 channel system is a 4 way system compared to the SS which is a 2 way system using subs. Don't get me wrong I like the SS system and the bass form the big subwoofers. I guess I need to do some more listening to try an put my finger on the difference. The one thing that is apparent is the bass from the two systems. Not more, since the Mc speakers have 12 in. woofer and 8 in. mid bass driver, but the Mc speakers are heavily damped and have an orchestral hall quality. The RF 7 system has a more defined bass quality.

Me too. When the RF-83/RC-64 first came out I thought they looked awesome but when I went to audition felt they were considerably warmer in the upper end which didn't sound as clean/crisp as my RF-7s/RC-7 (to my ears) up front. I also auditioned a couple of Klipsch THX Ultra II setups that sounded closer to my HT, but didn't think it was an "upgrade." All-n-all my guess is that all of these upper end speakers will sound nice and the difference is at the margins.

Hmm I'm a little surprised by your thinking. Not all of it but some of it. I agree that DIY pays off more from a price/performance standpoint as you increase the size of the driver. However I would think that DIY 12" is going to rival subs that are well above the cost you put into it. The Epik Legend was a solid performer for a $600 sub. However it was still only a 300 watt amplifier, and it used what seemed in my opinion to be modest to cheap drivers. But was able to perform well due to the fact the it employed 2 of those drivers. And I would think that without a doubt that this Ultimax build would surpass the XW500d. Same wattage, 500, w/ a 12" driver and larger cabinet as opposed to a 10" driver and smaller cabinet. Both sealed of course. That being said it's hard for me to make a direct comparison to the Legend due to the fact I've owned them both in different listening environments, and my impressions of the Legend are based solely on recollection at this point. The Legend was extremely clean and blended nicely with both my Reference line and Gallery line. However my listening environment was only a 12' x 16' room and never felt as if I could really feel the bass. I will say I was thoroughly impressed with this Ultimax when I plugged it in last night. My listening environment now is a similar size room 13' x 18', however it only has 3 walls and opens up into my dining room and kitchen. Still yet, I could feel the bass and not just hear it. I did not push the sub hard and didn't spend much time truly dialing it in. Just ran auto eQ on my Harman and ran with it. I'm looking forward to spending some more time with it and moving it around a bit in the room. I will be putting it through it's paces with some Blu-ray demo material over the next few weeks and can give a more detailed impression at that point. For the complete build I spent $468.23.

Amps can make a big difference in the way your K-horns sound, but you seem to have a nice amp. If you are looking to enhance the sound you are getting there are other directions to go in. Depending on the age of your speakers they might benefit from having the crossovers refreshed, or there are several people making new crossovers as well. Another way to really improve the K-horn is upgrading the mid horn. IMO those will make as big or bigger difference in the sound as playing around with good high end amps.

yeah... i think "Huge difference" between the 7's and the 7ii's is a bit of a misnomer.

Thought it would be interesting to post not that it is really relevant or anything but One of the only really close family members I have outside my immediate family is my cousin Andrew Leone. Why is this something id post on our beloved forum? Because he is a top team fighter, and his brother as well and who are they sponsored by? Our even more beloved Klipsch. I’ll post a link to a video of him advertising with our cherished company this weekend.

Thanks guys. Just edited the title to indicate "sold". I will miss these wonderful Cornwalls, but they went to a great home. I will hopefully have another pair someday.

I read up that that amp's design. That guy really knows what he's doing technically and represents "new school" of thought. Not that there's anything wrong with the old school. Looks like you have the best of both worlds. Your amps highly efficient and the output transfer function with loudspeaker compensation where it counts, and the less efficient part used where greater efficiency and low frequencies are not needed.

In order to develop loud speakers and sell niche items the company first and foremost has to stay in business and be profitable. Niche products like Heritage speakers won't get you there. You have to sell what the masses want to be able to cater to the minority (us).

Mine are from 85 and they have the 1 motorboards as well. I think they changed it much later in 85.

These are interesting though. Built in 85' and still have the CW1 motorbords. And I thought my 84's were a stretch.

I sold my 1986 CWs in pristine condition for 800.00, and that might have been a little low. A friend just sold his with Crites updates for 1000.00. I have seen them as low as 600.00 (which is what I paid for mine). I don't think 975.00 is out of line for speakers that look this good, just a little higher than I would pay. I think he will do fine though.

Quality speakers fetch good prices, snag-free cane grills give these corns a leg up on the competition. Good luck with your sale newbie

I am located between Jacksonville and Gainesville in North Florida. Khorndog asked about the Counterpoint SA-100 amp. Good eye! It sounds great with the Cornwalls. It has the punch of solid state with the warmth of tubes. I actually was thinking of selling the Counterpoint as well, as I recently bought a Cary SLI-80. The Counterpoint SA-100 is near mint condition inside and out, super clean...has the original box, receipt, and paperwork from when it was purchased new. I'll take $600 for it, if anyone is interested.

How does that Counterpoint sound with them?

After several weeks looking into a DIY design and quite a few e-mails and calls to various folks much smarter than I, the decision is....the tapped horn based on the SPUD design. I will be making two TH subs for my room. I have the 4 drivers on the way. I picked up a Behringer ep4000 to power the duo and have 5 sheets of 18mm BB in the shop waiting for me. Today I cut a 'pattern' to make the whole process easier. The template idea came from reading another thread on a SPUD like, tapped horn build. The template will allow me to dado slots for all the internal pieces that are exactly the same. It should make the process much easier to put together. I will be posting pictures of the build as I go along.
