  1. Morning Earl, long time, have not been running the rig much in the last two months, pizzing off a neighbor kind of thake the wind out of your sail. Pizzing off the neighbor who in fact is the neighbor hood wacco (Meds) is quite another. I gave him my number back when he complained, no biggie, however he has been calling me about every week and a half asking me about dogs barking, kid's yelling, and loud thumper cars. Whats next airplanes? Yeah this is a guy you dont want to mess with. (Wacked out Nam Vet on 40+ years of Meds). Used to know a Vietnam Vet. He Lived next door to a friend out of town. We went out one holiday and started shooting AK 47's and SKS's. Making all kinds of noise. I was told Ben did not have too good a night. I didn't even think until I heard that. Another guy I used to work with when I was 18, had returned from Nam. He was always real "Jumpy". I walked up behind him while he was tending chipper. Took his safety line and gave it a jerk. That guy tried to jump into the Sawmill Chipper. Felt bad after I seen how much it shook me up. Never did it again. I've worked with the older Vietnam Veterans and the younger Vets from the more current veterans. I would never knowingly do anything to any of them! I am a Nam Vet, this one fact does not help me dealing with/conversing with, any of them. Frankly i was to stoned most of the time to remember if i had a hard time. likely a good thing. Stoned or not, we did our job. Let me tell you the gooks were the last thing i was worried about, we had a tiger jump on the boat one time, he did not last long but jeses h christ , i did not sleep for a week., PBR, rivers, and done. And the wife wonders why i dont really care for going to the zoo

  2. This past weekend Rachel at Grant Fidelity did something a little bit different and a brave thing to do(Ian passed away this past summer). Grant Fidelity was at the Toronto Taves Consumer Electronics Show in Toronto. Grant Fidelity is all about high performance at low prices. This year Rachel decided to show folks the lineage of the excellent Chinese electronics that she sells. So displayed this year at the show were the two flagship amplifiers from Jungson (solid state) and Psvane (tubes). To demonstrate these fine amplifiers Rachel brought in a brand new open baffle full range loudspeakers from PureAudioProject the brain child of Ze’ev Schlik. I was fortunate enough to be asked to go along and I provide my analog and digital interconnects along with my modified Sony DVD player as our system source and my AC noise reduction devices. This turned out to be a one two three knock out success as 6 Moons Reviewer Tim Smith declared the Grant Fidelity room as "Best Sound at the Taves 2014 Show". What a great experience and what a wonderful time playing and listening to music. Thanks to Rachel and Ze'ev for making all of this possible. I think that Ian is feeling very pleased right now. Best regards Moray James. http://www.6moons.com/industryfeatures/taves2014/3.html

  3. Costco trip with LF yesterday. Bought Mayorga organic coffee beans. Not bad at all. Got the critter a large bag of Kirkland's low cal food. I mix in cut green beans and he likes it. Much less expensive than Taste Of The Wild dry food. Breakfast with the buds and now house chores. Just wet mopped all heart pine floors with Murphy's oil soap while doing a load of laundry Anyone hear from akdave about his dad? Cheers Gents

  12. Not I but we will be looking for anything. Brother was drafted in 65 by 66 he was in Nam. Artillery FDC and CO driver. He talks about his time in Army more in recent years. He commented that, "They tried to kill me over there"! Night patrols in and out of perimeter. He did not want me to have to go. I came close but no cigar. Draft lottery was kind to me.

  14. Your background doesn't extend to subjects like information theory and digital signal processing, right? (If it had, I'd've thought that you'd had a recent cerebrovascular accident and just had forgotten some really important things.) I really don't know how to respond without: offering a full primer on the subject of information theory for starters, inadvertently insulting you, or both. To be safe, I'll just abstain and pleasantly recommend any text on the subject in the most friendly manner possible. These books can be freely downloaded from the web. Insult away, which you already have by implying I can't possibly tell the difference in the sound of a song without understanding information theory. If you think things like math and information theory will win the day, then you ears are made of tin! Ok let's get into simple signal paths. Vinyl. Spin record. Drop needle on record. Diamond sends signal which is amplified by a couple of magnets and sent via four wires to preamp (for stereo) Only moving part, the cantilever. Stream a song. Access a site halfway around world, acquire an information file composed of thousands of zeros and ones/ Route through several dozens severs, through their spinning harddrives, via an additional thousands of miles of copper and optical cable to a computer with a constantly fluctuating voltage supply onthe power rails, and then send it to this, the most simplistic circuit for a sound card I could find, and then to preamp.

  15. Walnut Cornwall III's in Seeking a Friend for the End of the World. Seen in the latter part of the movie when Steve Carell's character listens to a record in his living room. No grill on the speaker but you can still see the rubber dimples used to help center the grill top to bottom. Spotting the Cornwall was the most exciting part of the movie for me. ymmv

  16. to not speak theoretically, I tested this method and it works. I was able to distinguish + and - of the CD. DUT was a Denovo DNA-360 I had idle lying around. we know if the polarity of a CD is right, the diagram will push upward so the pressure at the throat increases, if the polarity is inverse, it will move downward so sucks in the air. I used some non-iron washer as spacer: I put them on a very thin selephone sheet: I put the spacers on the selephone: then put the CD on them and wrap the plastic all around the driver: the plastic layer will be in some kind of suspension so any movement in or out will be simply visible: I connected a 3v battery to the compression driver. when the + of the battery is connected to + of the CD and - to -, the plastic pushes out, when is polarity is reverse it will be sucked in. I hope this helps.

  17. I had emails going to both BobC & CraigO. I couldn't get a handle on a annoying sound that was almost always present in my speakers since new in '82. Being willing to wade into finer audio, I'm now using refurbed Scott 299 , recapped my HSM's and bought a new NAD 546 cd player. Still 'that' sound. Even tried to EQ it away but I was impacting things I wanted to hear. I asked each expert to offer troubleshooting tips to isolate what I was hearing. After doing what they suggested, I still couldn't exactly pin it down. No real pattern. Weird! I have read and been advised of the 'forward' nature of Klipsch speakers. I didn't think this forwardness had anything to do with it. That's what drew me to them years ago. I describing in as much detail as I could to Bob. I could only say when listening there seemed to be an immediate, non-lasting, resonant quality which was quite annoying. He related a story to me about some speakers he looked at & initially couldn't figure out either. One was worse than the other. Of course, he got to the bottom of it and suggested my problem may be much the same. He told me what to look at. He was right! After checking mounting screw tightness, I then removed my squawkers to find each was mounted directly to the inside of the enclosure. No gasket. He said he found the remedy on his worse speaker was to install some foam weather stripping on the horn flange and remount tightly. I did that. That sound was gone. Unbelievable. He said some speakers were built with gaskets, some were not. I also found one mounting hole stripped. I replace that original #8 screw with a same length #10. If you're curious about yours, tap on the squawker horn with a small hard object. If there is a non-ringing but distinct/hollow/resonant metallic sound, you might want to take a look inside. After Bob's fix, tapping on mine produces a dull, almost dead sound. So much smoother & nicer to listen to. Many, many thanks to Bob!

  18. I hit 136 db with a single punch 40 and two series 1 12's. My best friend at the time used that same 40 watt amp to win nationals in the 0-100 watt class with two 18's in free-air configuration, it was nuts. I hear these guys wondering if 150 watts per channel is enough for small speakers and I just shake my head. You wouldn't exactly have a hard time beating your current setup, most anything is going to be a higher quality. Biggest thing that some of us perceived to have went downhill in terms of speakers since the old school Rockford days is that EVERYTHING is made in China now. I live near the now defunct factory that used to make Kicker, Lanzar, Bostwick, some JL audio, and more. I have multiple friends that worked there and they made high quality products with tight tolerances. Kicker was one of the first and biggest to bail, shortly after the square Solobaric's came out they sent all production to China. They tried to hang on and even produced their own version of the solobarics but the Credence brand never caught on. They laid people off but eventually had to close the doors. In my opinion the switch instantly made everything seem cheap, manufacturers instantly started incorporating lots of plastic and plasticy looking cheap materials. They tried to keep everything quiet and act like nothing happened but those who knew what was going on was kind of shocked. I think the manufacturing process over there has improved greatly but I still remember when the big switch came and it wasn't pretty. But then again, the xmax / xmech these new Chinese subs are getting is nowhere near what was possible back in the day. Hardcore subs back then are pretty standard nowadays. Hardcore subs nowadays would have been considered some kind of secret government space age project. Top SPL drag cars are squeezing out like 30 db more than what the top guys were getting back then. That's insane. Much of it is due to science, understanding the physics of what the sound waves are doing inside the car, but much of it is due to big leaps in subwoofer technology. Here is a link to a comparison of the 2006 Rockford Fosgate amps to "Old School" Rockford Fosgate amps: http://www.rockfordfosgate.com/Support/rftech.aspx?kbsrc=http://rftech.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/rftech.cfg/php/enduser/std_alp.php?p_cv=1.65&p_pv=&p_prods=0&p_cats=65&p_hidden_prods=&p_page=1&p_allorg=&advsearchmode=1&p_search_text=&p_new_search=1&prod_lvl1=0&cat_lvl1=65&cat_lvl2=0&p_search_type=answers.search_nl#knowledge

  19. She's attempting to delay the inevitable. As with all media, physical copies and even money itself are going to become less and less relevant. Wether we like it or not. On the plus side, taking money out of the equation leaves only the artists who are truly passionate about what they do and the fans who are truly passionate about supporting said artists.

  20. Mine is a Dogue De Bordeaux (French Mastiff) with headphones. timdog which my friends gravitate to calling me for some reason my whole life. Tim Doggendorf is full name Whoa they made a big stretch there! I also happen to love all types of mastiffs, I have or have had English Mastiffs both my boys were 220+ lbs, Bullmastiff's, Cane Corso (Italian Mastiff's) and currently the French mastiff. Coincidentally the dogs do not like the speakers, imagine that. I got into audio when I was about 15 and my friends brother had a basement with eight La Scala's two on each wall . And a wall full of equalizers that looked like a Christmas tree. Why he Felt he needed two on each wall is beyond me,(Probably just because he could) but it sounded freakin' awesome! Been chasing that down my whole life! I still would like to replace all my surrounds with RF-7ii's. I just don't think I could pull all of them far enough off the wall to make it sound good. The back surrounds, no problem, side surrounds they would have to be against the wall. Money seems to throw a monkey wrench into the equation also.

  25. If, like for me, the Bluray player is only used to take the audio and video bits of the disk and hand them over to the AVR, projector or TV over HDMI, then an Oppo will perform the same as a cheap player. I will cite: http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-blu-ray-player/ Who am I to make that claim? I’ve been handling almost all the Blu-ray reviews for Secrets of Home Theater and High Fidelity since 2010 and have had nearly three dozen players come through my hands. I’ve subjected them to countless objective and subjective tests. I’ve even thrown them on a $15,000 HDMI Analyzer to verify their performance. Often, as is the case with the LG, the picture from a cheap player is 100 percent identical to an $8,000 player’s.

  26. Been through various permutations a number of times over the past decade. Here's the synopsis: Some are after great sound, others are after accuracy. Accuracy cannot be measured, only perceived. That which is perceived as an improvement in sound to some may be perceived as inaccurate by others. Accuracy means "How close does this recording of George Mims playing the St. Martin's Schoenberg sound like George Mims actually playing the St. Martin's Schoenberg?" Measurements will not tell you that. It's all good...if it sounds good to YOU. Dave

  29. The only thing about that particular driver that stands out is it's tiny xmax (2.4mm). That's about 1/3 of the K-33. Reading the reviews one guy said 'more bass' from the Eminence. That seems counter-intuitive. Is there any forum member using this driver? What are your thoughts? In the Klipsch papers, it was mentioned that when the Khorn's woofer excursion was measured, it topped out at 1/16th of an inch at full output. The point of horn loading is to keep the cone excursion low to get lower distortion. This is about 1.5 MM, so 2.5 is overkill for any of the Klipsch horn loaded bass. Keep in mind that the woofer will never see more than 10 Watt PEAKS at loud volumes, with about 1/4 watt being typical input. So it's low distortion and linear with no power compression. So unless your are using a Belle for PA, whre you would need higher power and excursion capabilites (for survival, not better sound) the 15C is the best woofer for the money. buy with confidence.

  31. I thought the RF7's have a wicked impedance dip that most AVR's can't handle. I know your Denon benched pretty well though. To me pre/pro is the way to go because of the tech changes so frequently. You can keep the amp forever and just switch out pre's I agree about the tech changing frequently but the Flagship AVRs have also come down in price. It is the impedance dips you need to worry about with RF-7s but the upper end Denons are rated to drive speakers that are 4 ohm on all channels. Fwiw, the Denon AVR-4520ci can be had for between $1,000 to $1300 and that is cheaper than most Preamps that I've seen on the market and you get Audysseey X32 with dual subwoofer EQing which is pretty cool.

  39. Morning gang: Sunday eh? recovery day, Zip planned. coffee barely making a difference. Lab/Cave monitor project completed, finely an HDTV in the cave and ALL wiring hidden, gone, non existent. On yet another note, i have not been flexing my Volume like i used to before my neighbor complaint,(im sure the locals like that). The guy that complained a month ago, came by the house wile i was gone, left a message he lost my business card. Stopped by his house yesterday, see he has a wife on the porch with him, so i walked up and handed him another card with my phone number on it,(in case of another complaint). This Wacco introduces me to his wife, and in the same breath, being "The Horses Azz" of the neighborhood. this guy is one of those wacked out NamVets, you get that real quick when conversing with him. I just looked at this guy and walked back to my car, holy cow, this is the kind of wacco that is on the edge/drugs for 40+ years. Reminds me of Bruce Durn in the movie "The Burbs".

My requirements were simple, or so i thought, find a Lab/cave monitor that was first a Full HD Tv, then every dam input/output known to man. Yeah, two months on/off looking everywhere, but iv always looked at the top of the line stuff, started seeing the higher in price, the less inputs/outputs. This one will be smack dab in front of me for "Game Times" when not running Live Spectrum flow data from antenna feeds(Hobby). Time for more coffee
