  1. Not the best pictures but figured I'd share. I was fortunate enough to receive a pallet of speakers today that one (or two) of this forums esteemed members were kind enough to help me acquire. I don't want to get into specifics (or name names since I didn't ask permission) but I feel truly blessed to have stumbled into this forum and been so quickly welcomed and helped. I was able to fit everything except the sub (R115SW) into my Explorer which I'll bring home tomorrow. For your comparison I took a picture showing the 140SA next to the top of the 280FA. What you're looking at: (2) 280FA's (4) RP-250S (1) RP-450CA (2) 140SA's

  4. Great morning. Blue skies and 71 degrees. A perfect top down drive. The only down side was it was a drive into work and not a drive to the beach. Still life is good.

  12. Mornin' guys. Just wanted to check in. Looks like our dry, dry climate is starting to come around. Got a little rain yesterday along with some (yuck) hail. Not enough to damage anything. Planning a long weekend in Taos, NM in a few days to visit family and attend an arts festival. Will take a gorgeous mountain pass into NM near the border of the 2 states. Seriously thinking of moving to that area when better half's job situation permits. JL ...love the camel. Do you recall the truck line that used a camel as its logo with the legend "Humping to Please"? I think we should adopt that as our motto every Wednesday. (Maybe other days, too). Cheers to all.

  13. If that 1977 pair was in "New In-Box" condition, then maybe $1000... Otherwise start deducting for all the things (crossover, tweeter/midrange diaphragms) that generally need to be updated to get them sounding relatively new. So if you really want them, then make an offer based on their current condition and age. I'd offer no more than $700. But if you just have to have them, then go get them... LaScalas have that "something", that just grabs certain people. Just for reference I own three pair and understand the "need".

  14. I was asked to help with a massive project. This will be a true one of a kind. Ive hooked up the 240 horn and say it does through a larger sound stage and seems more expansive. The Speaker with be Fastlane Eliptrac 240/B&C DE750, Fastlane contrac with B&C DE10 and ALK ES networks, Kappa 15C. Cardis bining posts and some fantastic wire for hookup. The whole project should wrap up in a few week and it will be shipped to NYC.

They say that the sun is our friend; but, it's a ball of fire and will kill you if you get too close it, and it has been known to bring skin cancer along with it. I live in constant danger.

  19. First, crossover life. Most of the crossover parts rarely need to be replaced. The parts that do need to be replaced every 15-20 years are the capacitors. They're not expensive, and you can just buy some new ones with the same values and solder them in. There's a forum member who sells kits comprised of new Sonicaps, small plastic saddles to mount them, and the necessary zip ties, for a fairly low price. Woofer surround life: unlike most speakers, which have foam surrounds that dry out and fall apart after 10-15 years, the K-33 woofers in La Scalas have doped paper surrounds. The "dope" is a sticky substance that protects the paper from drying out. Those woofers normally never need their surrounds replaced. I have a pair of 1974 La Scalas that have the original woofers (as far as I know. I haven't opened up the doghouses (woofer compartments) to check.) and they sound fine. This type of speaker is also used in many musical instrument amplifiers. They're built to last, and they really do last for generations. Horn life: the early model La Scalas have cast aluminum mid/squawker horns. Their model number is K400. The later models have resin/plastic horns. Their model number is K401. Both types sound the same, and both types should last indefinitely. The tweeter horns should also last indefinitely. The bass horn is part of the cabinet, so unless the cabinet is somehow damaged, the bass horn should last forever. The tweeters themselves have the number K-77. They do not last forever. Stock replacements are available, and upgraded tweeters are also available. I replaced my old K-77s with Crites CT125 tweeters a few months after I bought the La Scalas back in 2006, and found they improved the clarity and extended the high frequency response, since the K-77s don't do much above 15 kilohertz or so. So that's it. Check that the tweeters are working by stuffing a towel or something similar into the mid horns to muffle them so you can hear the tweeters clearly. If the speakers sound fine, they are fine. If the capacitors in the crossovers are original, they should be replaced, but if the speakers sound fine, that can be done whenever it suits you. The same goes for the tweeters. As for price, that will vary greatly, depending on condition and location. The prices would range from about $500 for a rough pair to maybe $1500 for a pair of really beautiful La Scalas of 1970s vintage. You mentioned just one serial number. Are you looking at a single speaker, or is there a pair for sale? Hope this is helpful. There is a little bit more, now that I think about it. The cabinets are made of Baltic birch plywood. It's a good material, but it can be damaged by rough handling or submersion by flooding. Check the corners of the cabinets especially when you're looking for damage, and check the edges of the panels for any signs of delamination, particularly in the lower areas. Any damage can be repaired, but in some cases it's not economical or good value to do so. Like any used item you may want to buy, it's usually much less expensive to pay a bit more for an item in top shape, rather than buying a fixer-upper that may need more time and money spent on it than it's worth.

  21. Miss Piggy is the host of a late night talk show, Kermit is the producer, Electric Mayham is the late night band. The entire cast of characters is there helping with the show, plus a few new ones, lots of guest stars, like Jay Leno. I'll make this simple; you have got to watch it. Must watch. It's the funniest thing I've seen in years. Laugh out loud funny. I was laughing my head off, the whole half hour. I loved everything about it, it's fantastic. On ABC Tuesdays at 8:00 pm. Maybe ABC will have it on their web site like they do for a lot of their other shows like Agents of Shield, my other favorite. But you've got to watch it. :emotion-21:

  25. When my oldest daughter was small she'd eat 2 or 3 Eggos with Nutella for breakfast every day. Not most days, EVERY day. We'd buy the biggest box of Eggos they had and not one ever was around long enough to collect freezer burn. Back then you could only find it in specialty shops as it wasn't main stream and everywhere like it is now. She got hooked once my wife brought some home from a German deli. My wife's mother (German) kept it in the house when my wife was growing up.

When I used the "quote feature" to quote your original post the software took out the formatting, so I put some back in, exaggerating the text to make a humorous emphasis. But my daddy told me if you have to explain your humor, that's a pretty good sign it wasn't all that funny to begin with. They can't all be gems.

  28. I'm running a Denon AVR 4520ci, though it's probably a stretch for your budget, but maybe you can find a good used one for close... It's a beast, and was Denon's flagship receiver a few years ago. Doesn't have Atmos/DTS X, but aside from that it has all the power/features you could want.

  29. time to start looking for the up side of all of this. I have had similar shipping damage and understand the terrible sick feeling. That said You need to move on to the positive. A lot of guys here on the forum are feeling for you and extending their best wishes toward you and their hopes for a resolution that works. time to start soaking up the community love and move forward in a positive way there is a good life lesson in this and it will work itself out and there will be a kernel of wonder in there somewhere. Time to start smiling or at least thinking about what good thing(s) will happen as a result of all of this. Better days Shu better days.

  32. Sorry to have to look at the photos of your speaker. For others out there. Factory cartons are not good shipping cartons. I know they get used as such but you see what can happen. If you want to use factory shipping cartons you should fix the cartons to a skid. This is not to say that lots of owners use the factory cartons to ship and they got lucky because the guys who moved them were careful but stuff happens. Hurts to see these this way in this condition. I know how long Shu has been looking and that he has been very particular and that this is very important to him. Sorry man I feel so bad for you. Damaged goods during shipping is a no win situation for the vendor and for the buyer. I hope that these photos are a visual reminder to others who plan on shipping to go the extra distance and spend the extra cash to make sure things are secure and that they can sustain impacts on the order of three to four foot drops. Pick up is your number one best option for safe arrival of your speakers to your home. Shu please let us know how this all unfolds. Best regards Moray James.

  33. I am curious. What are you considering spending on your Synergy project with all the parts plus shipping? You are wading into the deep end with no directions for a project. I would expect that if the Synergy cross at 1600Hz. that the reason they do is because that where the woofers are good up to and crossing them higher could well just open a can of worms. Why not look for a pair of RF3 at the right price as those would be a very nice upgrade or you could look to other Klipsch. So long as you are not in a hurry and you look on a regular basis set up some google alerts so you can move quickly when necessary you should be able to find what you want for the price that you can afford. I would be considering a set of KG 5.5 then upgrade to ti diaphragms for the tweeters and you will be in a very nice position. There is nothing wrong with aluminum diaphragms they are superior to titanium. You have a driver and horn which were designed for each other it would be unwise to assume that simply fitting on a different driver will result in improved performance even if the driver is a better one makes no difference. If the Dayton exit opening ID. is different to the entrance ID. of the Synergy horn you are in trouble before you start or if the exit angle of the Dayton is different than the entrance angle of the horn you will have an automatic miss match and reflections and cancellations as a result. Now if you could borrow a pair of Dayton's to experiment with that might be different. Do you have any idea of how you would go about mounting the Dayton drivers to the horn in your Synergy? Unless you want an on going project your money time and energy would be better spent on looking for a used replacement/upgrade Klipsch rather than experimenting. I am all for modifying but I don't get the impression that that is what you really had in mind, it sounds like you simply want a better loudspeaker. If you really want to experiment why don't you first try some good quality film and foil (stacked if you can find them) bypass capacitors in your existing Synergy network for all the caps in there, especially for the electrolytic in the woofer section. That won't cost much and it might just get you where you want to go and it certainly won't move you backwards for your trouble. Best regards Moray James.

  34. I know you won't have the room Michael but the KLF-C7 sounds amazing and I think it would mesh well with the Heresies. I have mine centering some KG4's with a pair of KG 2.2 as surround and they sound really nice together. You may want to try a KG 2.5 as a center, pretty good match visually at least.

  44. That Marantz amp would be the way to go but it is a bit overkill for the rear Atmos modules. Won't hurt anything but it's kind of a waste. I know it doesn't sound like much, 125 vs. 140 watts, but their separate power amps are built differently such as having a toroidal transformer and not having to fight the other channels for power if they are all driven. If you did do that, I'd make them power the mains, which would be a nice combination. In the setup of the Marantz receiver there should be a choice you can specify where you offload your mains with the preamp output and you have four height channels powered by the receiver, which at least on the 7009's does not explicitly say "Atmos", and is confusing because another choices DOES say "Atmos", but supposedly that's what it's for. If you don't mind the size and the price, I think you'll be happiest with this setup rather than having mismatching gear. Marantz stuff looks very nice when multiple units are racked up together in a vertical stack, all the faceplates match. Otherwise, you can get away with cheaper amps, such as AudioSource's 50x2 if all you are doing is powering the Atmos modules.
