  2. Morning gang Bit wet&nippy, like winter. 40 heading to maybe 57. Preparing list and buying parts for projects, all parts from china Mfg, you got to wait like hell sometimes to get the goodies, however when you save 80% on the goods, it's well worth the wait, one to four weeks. Sure as hell with this little rain we have, im going to be mowing that lawn soon. As i remember Joe was saying he liked the easy meals of quesadillas, that is pretty much weekly around here. Might be Taco Tuesday but quesadillas are far easier to slap together.

  7. Luckily a year on Mercury is only 88 (earth) days... while a full day on Mercury is 176 (earth) days. A full day is nearly 2 years long. Mondays' still suck... but at least you get to celebrate about 14 New Years, Birthdays & Christmases before the next Monday rolls around.

  8. Interesting, never heard of this one. I think since iv retired iv made up for 30+ years of shaving daily, now i only shave when i leave the house with the wife. Local store, Farm runs, the Depot, local Pub, i no shave. Wife goes with me about once a week, so that puts me in places around here sometimes with six days of growth, i even say i look like hell. Depending on the "Home clothes" im wearing at the time, sometimes im walking around the Depot and some store employee is keeping an eye on me. i love it! knowing im finely making more money than most people i meet and i do nothing for a living. It's not that i do not wish to shave, it's just that i do not care. Kind of like my Farmers

  9. Happy Tuesday gang. Starting out as a pretty day which is supposed to go to hell later with snow, etc. I think Mark's Weather Drama Queen got a transfer to Colorado. We'll see. JL ... they shouldn't take pictures of that poor man. Probably just a shy person who tries to not be noticed and hopes no one attacks him with a garden shears. Top agenda item is spraying by pest control guy so it's probably a good to just sit down and play some music. Tuesday cheers.

  17. It's been almost a month since I have posted something on the forum and it's been killing me.. I wanted my 1000th post to be somewhat special... I was going to post something like.....my Klipsch/audio journey for the last 25+ years....but I just could not get my thoughts together. I have a hard time taking my thoughts out of my head and putting them into written form. My brain just does not work good like that. Like most of my speakers and audio gear my Chorus that I'm about to tell you about come with a story... A story that I think is worthy of "My 1000th post"... So here goes..... The Chorus........ While surfing the E-bay some 8-9 years ago I came across a set of Chorus I's. They had a starting bid of 99 cents, so they caught my attention. I clicked on the pics to see some really bad looking cabs. I mean these thinks were busted. The corners were gone on most of the top of the cabs. There were only four pics just enough to show how bad they were. All four pics were taken with the grills on, so I could not see any of the horns or woofers. A very brief description that didn't tell me a whole lot. So I placed my bid and I forgot about the auction. To this day I forget how much I bid but it wasn't much. As some of you guys might know my wife and I work together. We own a small auto shop and it's just me and her. So at the shop one afternoon my wife yells in the bay at me.. "hey you won those Klipsch"..... I was really at a loss, I really forgot about the auction. I went into her office to see what she was talking about. As soon as I looked at them it "clicked". She asked me what they are, I told her they are some Bad A$$ speakers..... Now my wife loves our audio gear... she was the one that found our LaScala's some 25+ yeras ago. So we looking at these really bad looking Chorus and she said something like... are you sure you want those?? I was at a loss, I won them for less than $30.... I forget how much I got them for but it was something like 27 bucks. The auction house was down in Washington DC... Down in the hood. DC is about an hour drive for me... but I hate driving in DC. I'm thinking let me call the auction house and get the scoop on these things. Like I said there were no pics of any of the drivers and if these are just bare busted cabs I'm going to pay for them and tell them to trash em. I wanted to keep my 100% feedback on my E-bay. But I was not going to drive in that DC hell for some busted up cabs. The call went something like this.... The guy told me that they sold these Klipsch for a customer several weeks ago. They shipped them but they got damaged in the shipping. This is how they got them back. They made a claim and everyone was made whole. He said they just want to off these Klipsch to someone that could use them. He said they were 100% working before the shipping damage, but had no clue if they work now.. but all the drivers are in the cabs. I told him I would be down tonight to pick them up. They were open late into the evening so I didn't have to fight that 5-6 hour DC hell traffic. The drive down there was not to bad....it was not that deep into the DC hood like I thought it was. We pay my man for them and loaded them into van. We got back to the house around 10:00 or so. I got them into the house and had a good look at them.... they looked much worse in the pics...oh they were still ugly.... well lets hear them... a quick hook up to one of my amps. Put about 20 watts to em and I could quickly tell somethings not right. One of the woofers was blown. But the other one was 100%. Now it just so happens I had a pair of K-48's in the basement. I got them years ago for something. I forget why I got them but I have them.. I get crapp from my wife about the stuff I buy. My wife was just shaking her head when I came upstairs with the woofer. I swapped out the offending woofer and put the watts to em..... Oh my they sound great.... the wife was like holy shitt. Despite how they looked these things kicked.... The cabs were still solid... I was very happy.. The Chorus was one of the 1st klipsch speakers I heard many many years ago. My old x brother-in-law brother got four of them when they 1st came on the market. He powered them with two Carver cube's. I never forgot that sound... it blew me away.... Now I have a set for a really good price. I must now end this 1000th post.....ohhhh I'm not done... I'm just getting started on the story of these Chorus... Like I said It is really hard for me to put things into written form and my brain is killing me right now. This is just how I got these things... and I am also at my home computer and this thing is slow and if I loose this I'm going shitt a brick... I hope you like it so far.... I will continue later and I will get the wife to load some pics tomorrow at the shop. Stay tuned..... MKP :-)

  21. That may be so but.................................... Post 75 you said you didn't like his corporate BS and basically accused him of being dishonest. Post 84 you were compelled to re-arrange his words for him. Post 103 you felt the need to tell how sincerely disappointed you were in his choice of build. Post 109 you referred to his (proposed) build as a turd. All of these things could have been left out or expressed differently to get your point across. There's been many discussions as of late of wanting to encourage new members with technical knowledge to participate in this forum. In order for the tube section to thrive we need to make new members feel welcome, not critique them right off the bat. Maynard worked hard to get this sub section into the forum and (even though I don't understand much of the technical jargon) I like it and would love to see it thrive as the synergy between tube amps and Klipsch speakers is something we all agree on. Again, technical DISCUSSION is encouraged.

  23. That's Woody Woodpecker Heads. Another crossover thread banned. Yawn. What the heck is a crossover anyways. I always thought it involved dresses, black stockings and hot steamy nights in the French Quarter of New Orleans with a guy named Maurice. What's to get so excited about. And fer crying out loud what's all these charts, graphs and plots all about. To me a chart is something Magellan used, a graph is the grease you use when dealing with city hall, and a plot is whats necessary to have a good murder mystery. There's something strange when you engineering types get all wound up about something called an inductor. And he's not even in charge of the band! Then there's these moderators. Why ban a thread because the guy who started it looking for a debate, gets it, picks up his marbles and goes home. And what the heck is a moderator anyways. Are these British 60's Mods who strut around in Go-Go boots and own refrigerators? And don't even get me started on L-pads. Who knows where in the heck part of the human body they go. So does an active crossover exercise a lot, and a passive one lays around eating bonbons? And what about all these Hertz you keep going on about. Don't the other rental companies, like Enterprise, carry the same models? Makes my head hurts, is what it does. Hey there's Maruice! "Hey Maurice, wait up!"

  24. I got a Tiny Joy in my email, yesterday and it mentioned Turkish coffee. Hmmmm. I then decided I *needed* a backpack/survival stove, to make Turkish Coffee and an Ibrik, or facsimile, to make it in. So I went to Gander Mtn and didn't like what I found and finally Wal-mart and brought this home. Turkish coffee is interesting and I like it! Four rounded tablespoons per cup of water, add 3-ish teaspoons of sugar, heat until it foams up 3 times and decant slowly. I think the Ibrik should be a Christmas hint.

  26. Toolshedamps: Iv been following the thread, myself in electronics since the 60s and everything Ham. Iv not "Seen It All" but dam close. I like the Design, and as with any design, Tweeks can be astounding, the fun of the hobby. Sounds like you are very willing to assist DIY builders, and man could this world use more guys like that, well done. May i just throw this out there for something for you to also consider, offer some of these Amp pieces sized and predrilled, you know, not exactly like a kit, but just some helpfull goodies for the DIYs. Of the many people iv assisted over the years, the one constant i saw was, a guy with this kind of hobby will make a space and set up a bench, invest in soldering and more than willing to learn, however iv witnessed many ready to jump on something like this, but do not have a drillpress, or wood/metalworking knowhow. so they give in and just buy assembled. My two cents Keep up the good Work/Designs/Tweeks :emotion-21:

  29. Ok let me get this straight. Perceived wisdom in building a system is to start with the speakers and go from there, fiddlin an doodlin and poking around until you got it right. So you're sitting there admiring your endeavors and listening, of course, to some righteous p-funk.. You got your amp, pre-amp, dac, cd transport, table with SUT, PUT, LOMC, clamp, brush, needle brush, and a magic eraser just in case. You've got a power cleaner the size of a bank vault, miscellaneous exotic tubes, hospital grade power cords, speaker wire woven from the pubic hair of vestal virgins, oxygen free too to boot, (it's the lack of oxygen that gives your system that "breathless" feeling), and rca's designed at Lawrence Livermore Laboratories and spun in a weightless environment aboard the space shuttle. You've got your magic pebbles sitting on top of your speakers next to your well-watered household plants, and all the wires are sitting atop sandalwood blocks carved by Buddhists monks in an ashram high in the mountains of Tibet. Then some idiot cons you into fiddling your crossover. Next thing you know, you've got to switch tweeters, then the mids don't match up well with 1/4 watt SET amplifier, so you switch that out for a push-pull, but now your bottom end needs work so you change the woofer, which throws off the values on the coupling capacitors, which requires you to add an extra quarter gram of tracking force on your cart, which causes sibilance when the Fat Lady sings. And it goes downhill from there until one day, drunk and despondent you borrow a gun from a neighbor who has a "Guns Are Our Friends" sticker on his pickup truck and blow your brains all over those well-watered plants sitting so nicely atop your speakers and those cute little magic pebbles. "Hey Maurice, wait up! What's this "pompitus of love" thing. Does it involve a pompadour, because I'm, somewhat hair challenged. Oh and..."

  35. She plays excellent jazz, and has a decent, but not great voice. Her band on the recordings we have are very accomplished. This music brings back pop/jazz sounds and feelings of the era when Ella and Peggy Lee we're big stars. Diana, like Harry Connick and Michael Buble offer a very nice alternative to the formulaic pop music of Katy Perry (ugh), or the over produced, over baked sound of Nashville. Diana has a mature sound, not a kid-like sound. We keep her in the rotation. Sent from my SM-T330NU using Tapatalk

  36. First musical preferences, are musical preferences. We all like somethings in music more than others. In her favor, her recordings are very well done, as are the lyrics of many of her songs. she has a very nice voice, and conveys a certain mood in her music. She was getting popular about the same time as Norah Jones, another jazzy crooner type. Of the two I like Norah better, and as I stated here a very long time ago, I think Diana Krall reminds me more of hotel lounge singer then say a Sade. If you are not into her that's OK, and if not, that's OK too. But they are quality recordings and that alone will have appeal to those with better music systems.

  45. I have a slightly different take on this thread. I retired from band directing about a year and a half ago. Spent 30 years teaching fantastic kids and loved (almost) every minute of it! But, one of the hazards of the job is that you become a very critical listener, and it's not something that you can just leave at the office. No matter what music I was listening to, part of my brain was busy hearing the flaws, problems, and how I would make corrections. Without realizing it, I had stopped enjoying music for music's sake and was always thinking technically. About six months into retirement I caught myself listening to a song and just flat out thinking how beautiful it was, warts and all. That put a smile on my face that lasted the rest of the day! Every since then, I've been "enjoying" music more than I have in decades, because for the most part, music is an art, not a science. On the other hand, now I want better speakers!

  47. Measuring at 40 Hz vs 20 Hz doesn't matter. The data is differential. Same driver. The really important thing is "they" sampled above, through, and below the intended passbands. The article has a picture provided, and also a reference to an AES paper on the method of measurement. Pretty cut and dry. "They" are spelled out in the first sentence of the paper. Sealed systems are even worse in this regard. Tons of research available on the topic, but not applicable in the context of this paper. No one is limiting excursion in that context, and everyone's goal is simply improved sound. At these frequencies, more is better by any right, but it's all too easy to discount the horn for how much more.

  48. It is a bit OT but. I take a math class from time to time at Chicago's community college. I'm older than most of the professors. This community college scheme is just magnificent in that it allows citizens to build college credit a very low cost. So if the question is how the underclass can get above the minimum wage, the community colleges are part of the answer. WMcD
