  3. If any of you won items that you do not want, or need to sell, I would ask that you hold onto it for another couple of weeks. By that time we will have a very worthy cause that might have good use for them, especially if they are still in boxes.

  4. What's up gang. This has been a horrible week. That normally happens when you come off vacation where you had an awesome time and reality slaps you upside of your head. The upcoming 3 day weekend should help some though. The weekend after this we'll have out of town company and my youngest daughter is graduating high school. Man time flies. I know she's looking forward to the next chapter in her life. I hope everyone has a good one today. I checked on that aeroseal stuff. It's really neat how it works and it no doubt does BUT man that stuff is expensive. To do my ducts would run about $2200. It would take me forever to make that up in energy savings.

  5. The best way is to build with a knee wall in place to allow 12" of insulation over the wall/ceiling joint, AND proper ventilation over the insulation. I know it adds to the cost of new construction, but well worth it if you are building a house to live in for life. Most energy efficient designs on have a payback over a period of 30-40 years.

  6. I would give the Yamaha 3050 a fighting chance first before switching to a pre/pro. From my understanding, the Yamaha RX-A3050 preamp/processing section is near but not exactly the same as in Yamaha's praised CX-A5100 pre/pro. Your 3050 is Yamaha's flagship AVR and is packed with just about all the bell's and whistles you can get. Add the XPA-5 and see/hear what you get and tweak accordingly. Remember, there will always be something "better" out there. Bill

  11. Sealed attics and crawl spaces stabilize air flow and reduce air leakage. As babadono points out it depends on what part of the country you live in. Foundation vents make perfect since in Minnesota or North Dakota but not in Louisiana, Mississippi, or Florida. In humid environments vents are counter productive. Warm air always seeks cooler air. So the air outside your house seeks cooler air such as in a crawlspace and then condenses. What makes matters worse is if you have a vapor barrier on grade to keep the moisture from going into the ground you create a swimming pool. AC ducts that leak aggravate the problem by providing additional conditioned air. Speaking of air leakage check with your power company to see if they will do a power audit to include duct leakage. It is possible to pinpoint sources of leaks by using a blower door and creating a negative pressure on the envelope of the structure. Armed with that information you can go about sealing the leaks. In my training while I was in the housing industry I quickly learned where most houses leak. Any penetration through the structure is suspect. Go into a house under construction before the dry wall goes up and look at the size of the holes under a bathtub where the supply and drain come in

  12. In other posts and links the discussion turned to accurate versus realistic. So I'll pose the question of whether some recording can be both. Here is an excellent recording of Steve Winwood. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8878chOvfI It looks to me that two Neumann microphones are in the area, and some others. We don't know how many are active. But the result is fabulously natural. It is interesting that lyrics date from 1568. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Barleycorn WMcD

  13. SOLD Located in N. Indiana, South Bend area. Gorgeous Cornwall 1 walnut speakers. 1985. All original drivers which are functioning perfectly. I installed new gaskets between horn lenses and motorboard, new gasket on back panel, new O rings on mid driver to horn lens, updated the B-3 crossovers with Sonicaps from Crites, new 5 way binding posts. I am happy to audition these. They are more beautiful in person than in the photos. Edges are sharp, very few nicks. Grills are excellent, both original badges. Consecutive serial numbers. These are sweet. $950.00 (listed higher elsewhere).....local pickup much preferred, although I will be happy to drive 50 miles or so to meet up. Please PM me with interest. Thanks!! JimJimbo

  14. I totally get being tired. Four days of 4 hours of sleep let me know, I'm not 30 anymore. Still, I wouldn't change anything. I had a blast.

  18. One more day and finally, I get a break and some time off. Oh yeah, I just got back from Hope on Monday, worked Tuesday, took off Wednesday and now it's the two days in a row grind! Not sure what I'm having for dinner tonight, but I sure wish I was back at Rodney's.

  21. 4 day weekend starts in a few minutes. Have to finish mowing the Panama canal mosquito swarm. I started yesterday with two layers of clothing, 35% DEET and mosquito netting draped over me under a pith helmet. I'm sure it was a sight to my neighbors but their yards are still 6" tall.

  29. Morning gang.... Yup we got a roof.......and it keeps us dry ....... Our home was built in the 70's and I don't think it has the "best" construction. We got a new roof and windows when we bought the house 10 years ago. We've been in the house 17 years. It was my in-laws old house..... and the price they sold it to us for I'm not complaining.... Now our property tax says the house is worth over three times what we paid for it ...... Coffee just about wrapped up...... The BOSS had to go to DD yesterday and get hooked up..... we were down to just over a pound of beans. The BOSS never lets it down this low... She has a special deal worked out with the DD manager A good day to all......the weekend is almost here... MKP :-)

  30. Lossless PCM (flac, AIFF, etc.) is the way to go in my experience.

  31. It also appears that your player doesn't handle DSD. So you'll not have to worry about that subject. But default internal conversion to 48 kHz PCM before transfer to your AVP or AVR is always something to be vigilant about preventing from occurring. I've found that this process (the conversion) is extremely degrading to sound quality. It shouldn't be...but it is. Chris

  32. That HDMI port is bi-directional, but since this is a digital player, it's basically operating in output mode only. I've found on my setup that using RCA analog cables produces the worst sound quality of all due to the conversion to analog being done in the player (usually not the best DACs and analog amplifiers are found in the player). The AVP (pre/pro) or AVR usually has the best DACs and analog amplification. It's also crucial to keep the transmission of the information in the digital domain across wires, as it eliminates noise from creeping in through external wiring acting as antennas. YMMV. Chris

  34. Everything arrived yesterday and I was able to have a short listen today........very nice indeed! There was some slight damage during shipping (two of the plastic feet on the 7's were broken) but I just took them all off and all is right. jdbeachbum was very easy to deal with and the speakers are in beautiful condition!

  36. That's probably the number one reason your attic doesn't vent properly. I've recently noticed a rubber or plastic mesh system that goes over your black tar paper or ice and water shield on your roof, under your shingles, to allow air to circulate under the roofing. It's mandatory with cedar shakes.

  38. I have a ridge vent that runs the full length of my house. It has always done a great job. Just have to make sure I don't push speaker boxes between the ceiling and roof, as not to block the vents.

  39. Gary, Sorry to hear about your home problems, your climate is a huge factor in the decaying process. Flue problems are rampant here also, and there aren't enough masonry contractors to handle all the work. The contractors that are around all like to price gouge the homeowners. The bad part is all contractors look bad because of the bad ones. You might try to get another estimate. Around here, a $3500 masonry bill will replace about 10-15 feet of a standard masonry flue.

  40. The standard here is soffit vent for intake and ridge vents for exhausting the hot air. A balanced system is desirable according to current thinking. Some folks close off the gable vents when taking this approach. We are adding a thermostatically controlled power vent that only comes on under very hot conditions. Something else that has changed over the years is crawlspace ventilation. A sealed crawlspace is actually better suited for controlling moisture in the crawl space in our climate. It's a code issue that is being reviewed.

  41. Mornin' folks. Sounds like the Hope travelers are settled back in. For my part, I'm still carrying out Better Half Unit's planting, etc., vision for our gardens and lending support to the profitability of ibuprofen manufacturers. I haven't been this up close and personal with plants and shovels in years. Gary ... sorry about the chimney and concrete stuff. In my first house, we had a chimney that was a real mess but a really good tuck-pointing job and a new chimney cap did the trick. Are you sure you need a complete re-build? Have a good day all. Will try to check back.

  42. Just dropping by to say good morning! Thank you to all who attended the Pilgrimage. I still have some work to do, like shipping Tshirts and goodies to those who registered but weren't able to attend. Hoping to wrap all of the orders and shipping up in the next ten to fourteen days. We are already in the early planning stages for next year!!! To those of you that didn't make it...we fully expect to see you there next year!

  43. The big doors on the bottom shelf are numbered telling where they go (1-6 from left to right). This will be under the hinge side so it will not be seen. Clamps anyone? Bull Nose trim installed on front of shelf This shelf will be used behind the middle two doors. Supports added underneath for added strength.

  45. Ya, probably true. I just figured a cornwall may be easier to come by but I suppose patience is key. Yes, patience is key. It took me about 4 or 5 months to find a 3rd La Scala, but the wait was totally worth it. I use the center LS as a TV stand and it works great for me.

  46. I've seen a lot of folks lay their attic insulation right up to the roof sheathing effectively making the soffit vents useless. There must be a path for the air coming through the soffit to get to the attic. Card board or Styrofoam baffles prevent the blockage if installed correctly. Great photo Kevin via Luther.
