  1. Morning all Been a few REALLY busy weeks. Got a lot of the little "annoyances" fixed on the Volvo.....runs like a scalded dog...holds a good 14lbs of boost when in it...been extremely happy with it so far. Tallied up for all the little stuff I've spent getting it back into daily driver condition....I've got right at $2000 in it....guy stopped by the house on Monday asking about my little Civic....told him it needed a Transmission Lockout Solenoid but that it had 78,000 original miles and that A/C and all power worked....he took it for a drive and came back an offered me $2000 "as is" So broke even!!!

  3. lady at work just commented that I was "all smiles." Probably because i just came out of my boss' office after i told him that i moved my retirement date up...i'm leaving at the end of this month. Found out that if i'm already retired on April 1st, i get a 2% cost of living raise. People that retire April 1st or later, must wait until next April for a raise (if they have one next year...generally, it's less than 2%). So, i'm in the homestretch.

  4. Chuck, the finger healed up well, thanks. I do have some shooting pain once a day, I think that's because the fingernail growing part was severed, the nail is fractured but growing out. I can use it, probably about 80% back to where it was. I still can't believe I did that

  10. still a no on that one ... i’ve still got to find a place to live, pack, and move. i hoping a realtor can find me a six-month rental -- i decided that i want to hang there awhile before buying a place. I will rent a place, short-term, on the advice of a realtor that comes recommended; but, if i get bad vibes -- i’ll have to take another trip up there and take care of stuff myself.

  24. Picked up and hooked up. They were in excellent shape, original owner, older gentleman, nice home. They are surprising, nice tone and plenty of low end. Using my low watt tube amp, wow. I am not going to leave them there they are the beginning of a home theater set-up. That said what is a good center for this, I have had a KLF C-7 before with Chorus II's and it was impressive.

Nothing like testing them out with some Allison Krauss to hear how that edge was taken off in her voice plus that UHF that just wasn't there....even with my crappy hearing. ha It's nice being one day shipping from Mr Crites...even if we Arkansans do have to pay tax on his goodies. My VTA ST-70 is done and playing in the garage and I hope to have it in the living room later and get a little listening time in. 28. You'd be buying a pig in a poke. I have no idea if there's something common in these particular amps that craps out causing it to not power up. Shipping costs for you will be high to get it to a reputable repair shop unless you're aware of one close to you. It probably needs to be completely gone through which is pricey. With my luck it would be an expensive repair. I'd offer $100 for the amp as is (DOA) knowing I'll have to shell out more immediately.

  32. Vry early teens my best friends father built a wall-wall cabinet housing a RTR, turntable, Fisher AM/FM and two 15 inch full range JBLs. Quite the rig for mid 1960's. We'd listen all the time before and after school. Down from his house we hung with some of the first "long hairs" of the day who had a band so we listened to a lot of music. Mid 60's mind you so music legends are just emerging. Two bid stereo shops in town one a big time Mc dealer, the other carried it all a big JBL dealer. We left lots of drool in those stores. My dad worked with a guy who moonlighted at the JBL store, David Beatty Stereo, who fixed me up with a nice Kenwood integrated, Thorens table and the first Infinty speakers to hit the market. Quite the first rig for a 15 year old. Forward three years, at college my best friend above and I are wakened middle of the night by the long hairs mentioned above who were delivering a pair of custom cabinet JBL's with Pro Line LE15a and LE85 compression drivers. All done by dads inside friend at Beattys. What a surprise as this was just a pipe dream that my dad followed on! And when I say wakened in the middle of the night I mean it - these dudes were crawling through the front room window!!! Keep in mind now, the late 60's, long hairs in a band, you get the picture!!!! Another shop came to town, big Klipsch dealer. Ordered my first Klipsh speakers - walnut stained LaScallas. And on it goes ----

  34. Going with my dad to his work 4 or 5 nights a week. Dad bought me pretty much any kit i wanted, Heathkits were "Ok" for a couple years. Dad was more machanical/machining, but all of his bud's were electronics, i was exposed to "The Fisher", spoiled from day one. Dad's work place and my Lab of learning was what was at the time called STL, Space Tech Labs. it's now called TRW. These are the guy's who built the first satt's and all space research of the 60's thru today.

  35. I come from a long line of tinkerers. In the 50s, my father built a monaural Heathkit integrated amp to power a Heathkit bass reflex speaker. With the advent of stereo, he built a stereo Heathkit integrated amp and a second speaker. I was pouring over Allied Radio catalogs dreaming of putting together a system. In the late 60s, in college, I was exposed to some very good systems owned by "rich kids." When moving into a house with three other guys, it was my responsibility to order a system for the house. I contacted International Hi-Fi, the mail order arm of Stansbury Stereo in Baltimore, to order a pair of Dynaco A25 speakers, Pioneer receiver and Garrard turntable. My first real post college job was in Annapolis, MD. I again contacted International Hi-Fi to order Bose 901s, AR-XB turntable, Shure V15-III, Sony cassette deck and Dynaco kits (ST400, PAT5 & FM5). While I appreciate good sound quality, the music is more important than the hardware. An excellent recording of an excellent performance played through a decent system is more satisfying than a poor recording of a poor performance played through a SOTA mega-buck system.

  37. Neil, I fear this is another dirty little episode in audio history. As I investigated the DVD-A format over a decade ago, I found that that to do anything past 48khz required a proprietary compression program that cost several thousand dollars. Wasn't a bit better than the public domain stuff, but the owners had managed to get it required for DVD-A compliance. Undoubtedly helped sink that format as the same tactics have almost done to DSD in SACD. At least the DSD recording format has gradually become more available, as well as two channel files for download. Where would LPs be if you could only have them play correctly with an EQ curve costing thousands as being patented? Or CD/digital that had to be in a certain file format to play that cost thousands to acquire? This crap hurts all artists and musicians and is a crappy business model as well... but they don't learn.
