  3. Congratulations to you and your father. At 69, I’m 5 years older than my father was when he died from a heart attack, not his first. Since his way too early death, I have taken a baby aspirin each day. Had he done the same, he might have lived to enjoy his grandchildren. Regular aerobic exercise and that daily aspirin have been my routine since he died in 1988. Unless your physician tells you otherwise, a baby aspirin a day and at least 20 minutes of aerobic exercise 3 times/week benefit everyone. Use it or lose it. A little music can’t hurt too.

  4. Good looking room, very nice, a collection of Lava lamps, now that's different. He is doing well, wish I could say the same about the weight, I got each of those 30 pounds, but no meds so that's good. Know how I stay off the meds, don't go to the doctor !

  5. Thanks for that story Mark, I read it with a smile on my face , yes, I can add................When we visit my folks each August as you all know, my father will introduce me to his friends, or, just someone in a store that he knows. It is usually the other way around, "This is my son....oh, and he is 64..." that will usually make them all look back at dad in amazement at how old HE is but doesn't look ... So, that is a similar story only the effects are 'reversed' ... Thank you for the compliment also dTel... Now, here is one for YOU! This year, at our annual Christmas dinner party here at our home, I announced to Chris a few days ahead that "We will be using the Klipsch WINE glasses for WATER this year..." Well, I can tell you, our guests were very curious about them, one actually recognized the logo ! They got a kick out of the story I told them (yours of course), and how you were so kind to replace a SINGLE broken glass with turned into many replacements later from which they were enjoying their iced water... I will put up a photo of the dinner table BEFORE we sat down.... coming up shortly......

  6. .....Ok, long story, made shorter........... Some years back, I was discovered on a Lava Lamp forum... A lady sent me a PM wanting to know if her and her daughter could do a write up on lava lamps for a school paper she was working on. I was to let them get photos of my display and answer any questions about the history / models, origins of my collection etc. Arrangements were made........... They were driving in from Boston (2 hr. drive).... I had to start the lamps 2 hours BEFORE they arrived, as the larger and original models (on the top shelf) take that long to warm up ! Anyway, she did the interview and took her notes, and then wanted some photos, so, here is one of the many photos of the daughter with the collection all lighted behind her (about 1000 watts to power all that up !!) with a red 'midnight' glitter lamp illuminated in her hands... Enjoy...........

  7. A huge cold blast is coming down from Canada this weekend, -12 as a low Sunday night. You're doing well Gary, the average male gains 1 lb a year between 30 and 60. It's awesome you're not on any meds, me either.

  9. ...............here you go........table for 5, (my sister did not attend this year, she usually sits to my right at the open table space)... You can see the Klipsch glasses are in 'NO dust' mode along side the VERY classic (and pricey) Waterford wine glasses....

  10. Didn't think you were 65, keep up whatever your doing, good to hear about your dad at 90. 8 degrees, that's about as cold as I have ever been in, many years ago while skiing in Ghent WV, once was enough.

  11. " SOLD " ...... To another lucky forum member

  12. ...almost forgot to say.................the 'Snow' model I was able to order through a company in the uk. that actually sold uk market lamps to the US. So, when I saw that Mathmos made this special lamp of only a limited 300, I had to have it. So, it was $48 PLUS add about 50% more for the exchange rate at the time, PLUS shipping to get it here.............it was around $150 ! But, as you see, really nice.... The one in front is Blue liquid with orange lava... The model is called 'Astro Lamp' and that is 52 oz. of liquid just like the Lava Lamps around it. You can see how back in 1965, that design was copied by the Lava Lite company.... Those were all 'Century 100' models and mostly from the 70ies in this collection Most ALL came from eBay purchases. These lamps have an actual tag under the cap seal... Bought one from my graduation year, but, it was totally worn out..............it is packed in a box of junk out in the garage..... Its funny, I stop and look at these vintage lamps and wonder about the surroundings they were in when new, and how many faces have gazed into them ............if only they could talk right ?

  13. .....ok, the Lava Light company is NOT the original................. The original is a company in Poole England and started in 1963..... To fellows here in the states heard about this 'new' lamp and checked it out, later starting the Lava business of their own in 1965 - two years later.... As the story goes, some fellow made one of these lamps and was on display in a pub at a much earlier date.... So, the one that is NOT lighted I bought personally at the Mathmos store in London back in 2007 while visiting there! Managed to pack that up in my suitcase along with another I bought for a friend. The one behind it is from the same company and a VERY special lamp (A Christmas promotion - no color, supposed to be like 'snow') AND order, because it was NOT to be sold here in the states. These run on................you guessed it, - 240 volts! I only have the one power supply, so that is why only one of the English lamps is lighted.... And yes, they have that HUGE tri-pronged plug! But, these are stated on the front logo ' Mathmos - 1963 Original' founded by Ed Walker..............the company is still making these lamps in the SAME factory today (different models for US market)... There you have it.....................

  14. Billy, most all the vintage models are shown here on the two top shelves, back when the company produced the lamps here in the USA, then as you go down the display, the newer 'made in China' models are displayed... There is a cool story that goes with the top center NOT lighted, and the clear with WHITE model right behind it.....

  15. That looks great. Looks like a Lava Lamp affectionado's collection. Seems almost everywhere I went in the day. Going to find me another or so for the room. That is a really nice one she is holding. Good story Gary!

  17. LOL, yes dang, pretty cool site. Prices even look reasonable Even saw some posters had forgot about. yes, those lava lamps tend to go quick everywhere. Stuff for the cave... Like the visuals without a blacklight.

  18. True, I notice the lava lamps because I had two collected over the years from somewhere ? But two of the grand kids wanted them so that's where they went. It's cool now with teens, I guess everything comes back around sooner or later ? 16 and 17 year old girl and boy, the girl loves this website and anything hippie, she had me paint her a multi color piece sign for her room. http://www.hippieshop.com/cgi-bin/gold/category.cgi?category=30000RP

  19. Thank you Billy for the comment...............it is a bit cramped in there...yes, the lava display is my 'little' addition.......that Spanish side board is 8.5' LONG and 27" deep (I just measured it!) and there is a large 3 glass door, silver display cabinet on the opposite wall you don't see to the right of the photo, BUT, we all manage to sit and enjoy our company ... Hope yours was nice also, and we all look forward to the coming year..... Neil, that all sounds like a winning formula for sure!

  20. I understand the “grid” to be referring to the grill cloth frame. It’s semantics, but in my experience, Klipsch Heritage have “Masonite” (a trademark commonly used to refer to all similar pressed hardboard) grill frames.

  25. That's awesome Gary.... My dad will be 78 in Jan and he's a little "spark plug" He looks no where close to his age. He works out a minimum an hour a day!! and works out hard! Up until a couple years back he was training self defense with me. He stopped training cuz of his arthritis in his wrists. It hurt too much to hit the heavy bags and pads........ and he didn't stop motorcycle racing (road racing) till his later 60's. He stopped racing cuz my mom would freak out when he went. Even though he raced in a vintage class at those speeds if ya come off you ya might not ever be right again!! Quick story..... At the end of this year we had a Halloween party at the house. Had a big disk fire in the back yard. We had our grandkidas there and a bunch of other kids...... all kinds of people (I still gotta put some pics up for you guys) So a bunch of us are around the fire just BSing..... my dad was hanging out with us there...... so there was young lady there, she was a friend of my eldest daughter and we knew this young lady from the pre-school that we took our granddaughter to years back. Well during my talking with my dad she hears me say "dad" She interrupts our conversation and says...... Hold up Mark...... this is your dad? I said yea. NO WAY she says..... again I'm like yea that's my dad.... she turns to him and says you look incredible!! She kept looking at him shaking her head in disbelief...... again she says YOUR MARKS DAD???? My dad's like yup he's my son...... again she's saying no way no way. A few other people chimed in and said "yea that's Marks dad" So a few minutes go buy and I can tell she still can't believe that it's my dad..... and by this time we were laughing and my dad has this smile on his face...... a few more minutes goes by and she walks up to my dad and says " I'm sorry but I have got to ask........ how old are you?" My dad answers with.... I'll be 78 in January..... again she is in disbelief..... and all I can say is I hope I got a lot of those genes MKP :-)

  26. Hello everyone.....have read through the posts over this past page with some sadness for Mark and with reading other's stories... It is a hoot that my dad is STILL acting like he is in his 60ies ! Still loves fast cars, drives his Merc. Marquis with the performace 4.6 v8 a little TOO fast for my taste, as I get SKYPE reports from him each weekend... He is continuing to chop cords of wood for the stove with his splitter, golfs a few times a week etc. (North Carolina as you may remember) and only on ONE med.... He will be 90 this April ! I am very fortunate to take after him - I am now 65 and still take NO meds what so ever and manage to weigh only 5 lbs. more then I did when in high school all those many years ago.....Still amazed by this ! ) With that, my best wishes for ALL our forum friends and their family good health in the new and coming years ahead, with .... ............Gary

  27. A friend and I went through and compared a bunch of speakers to my 160m’s when we got to speakers well above the price class of the Klipsch, they did just as well, the only difference heard was that the Klipsch had better transient response and the vento did slightly better at revealing the “air” of the recording room, but neither was preferred over the other. He liked them so well he has decided to replace his HT setup with reference premieres. My mind was blown, I expected the ultra high end speakers to destroy the Klipsch.

  28. Yeah, I know. I am hoping that the new one will be a lot less bad. The RF-7, RC-7, RS-7 and SVS SB2 Plus will be a totally new experience. So far, I have only the RC-7 and the SB2 Plus. The RC-7 owns the room.

  33. I love music that sounds good to my tin ear and is lively. Like they are in the house. Some spend tons of money on a system that might turn an audiophiles head but I'm about the music not having the very best equipment. Glad you made a convert. Im sure he was very surprised!! I only have a about 2500 dollars in my system but it sounds great to me and most of the reason is the klipsch speakers at the end of the chain. Peace!

  34. One mildly interesting thing about those rubber washers is that the design seemed to change pretty quickly. I got an early pair of the special edition california black walnut and the washers were actually on the speaker. Later they were on the grill. I actually have two otherwise identical lambswool grills right now and they were built in different ways. Not sure why they changed.

  35. Thought we were talking about the baffle / motor board for some reason.
    1 point
  36. Correct. No. The brake is there to help prevent rotation in flight when the prop is feathered. It also helps slow the prop when shut down on the ground. The brake is a cone shaped device (think of two ice cream cones, one inside the other). When starting the engine the starter pushes the two cones apart and then they are held apart by oil pressure. The propeller has a constant speed valve housing. The flyweights always want 100% (1020 RPM). Due to CTM (centrifugal twisting moment) the blades always want to decrease blade angle so there is almost always hydraulic fluid ported to the increase blade angle side of the prop dome. There is another forced called ATM (aerodynamic twisting moment) forcing increased blade angle but it is significantly less than CTM.

  43. My father was 94 when he passed. I remember him saying multiple times how tired he was. The last year of his life saw several hospital stays. All he wanted to do was get out of there and I can't say I blame him. One stay a Dr. told us he was "circling the drain". We had her removed from his care and he ended up going home with us a few days after that. Another hospice stay he was in a coma for 3 days, woke up, asked for a Pepsi and 3 days later went home with us again.

  44. Sorry to hear about this Mark, there is nothing anyone can do, which is the hard part. Like you said the best that could happen is she goes in her sleep, went through this with both of my parents. I watched my mother during the day for her last few years, my sister took her home at night unless she had somewhere to go. I took her to all of her doctors appointments and wound care, I say all of this because it became obvious at the end that she just became really tired of being worn out from all of it. People fight for as long as they can but it wears them down over time, all you can do is the best you can to make her comfortable. You never want to see the end but in some ways it's a relief when there is no chance to improve and they can rest. Good luck

  45. I would like to go to the foundry, I would think they have a store there with everything they make, and they make alot of different things. The one we went to was an Lodge outlet store, and even it had a crazy amount of pots and pans. I got a few of the little things that slide over the handles so you don't have to use a potholder, I rarely use those. I love to cook, someone told me about cast iron pans a long time ago when I was complaining about most non stick pans not working very well. It took a while before I started using cast iron but the more I did the more I liked them. All of mine are well seasoned now and you can cook anything in them and they just wipe clean, i like cooking not cleaning.

  46. the University Dean would fit and depth right when shoved into a corner here's a rough sim of the Mini-Punch, University Classic Note the Lil B__tard vented with a strong motor driver - whether it would sound "open" like a bigger mouthed horn = ? 12pe32 seems overdamped to make the best of a reflex/horn combo. (same in my K12 vs Kappa12 spec) IG81 came up with a little horn for TF1020, shown below - not built so performance not known.

  48. That is one biiiiig horn! Thats an EV cab right? Found some designs which use only half of the bin (height wise) which could make a pretty good center. PS, just want to share the happy news I'm might have found a way to order the K-402 in my area! Took a while, and some extensive emailing, but it's looking good!
