WNYC here in the big apple. I believe owned by the city.

Over the years they have played music that very few stations would dare to.

Back in the early 80's they introduced me to Philip Glass, Steve Reich and Terry Riley. These minimalist composers were virtually unknown and unplayed. Well, at least here in NYC. I'm eternally grateful for that

Although the amount of music played each day has given way to "news" (if you want to call their left wing agenda news), it's still the place to go to hear something new or different.

Not far behind is WKCR. I think Columbia Universtity is it's affiliation. About a week ago they had a week long "Benny Goodman" festival. They played all the recorded works that they had in their library.I listened to a small portion of the festival and still was amazed at how much Benny Goodman recorded, how talented he was and how long a period his career spanned.

I hope these venues continue to exist. Otherwise, we'll all be listening to the a$$ end of the American Idol assembly line.

its like an oldie station, playing music from the 60's to 80's. 15 years ago i never listened to it. i was all into the dush dush music, but now, 15 years later the oldie station works for me. they play music that i grew up on.
