BigStewMan
there is a bright shiny dime on the sidewalk by my work. It’s been there a couple of days. No way i’m going to pick it up; but, it seems others aren’t either. Perhaps it’s all the disgusting things that I see on the ground (i don’t think anyone has sex at home anymore)...or maybe it’s because the parking lots are full of Mercedes, BMW, Bentley...and a dime just isn’t all that tempting. Anyway, if anyone needs a dime, i can tell you where to find one. I just like to help.
Matthews
I picked up a penny today. It was so dirty I nearly missed it...

Maybe i would have if it was tails because we all know that tails never fails. (actually, i’m a germaphobe in many ways--i wouldn’t even have picked it up if it was a $5 bill).
jimjimbo
I actually feel internally guilty if I don't pick up even a penny.....just doesn't seem right to me to leave it there.....
mattSER
I only grab quarters or higher. Anything less isn't worth the mileage on my back.
richieb
Why yes, yes I do. Why wouldn't I, or you? It's spendable US currency, the best there is, 'Merican money. I'll take all I can get, or find. Send your spare change my way - bulk amounts greatly appreciated.
mustang guy
I found out today quite by accident that Reese Cups are over $1 now. If I still had every penny I ever picked up in my entire life I couldn't afford a candy bar. Sometimes I buy something that costs 2 cents over the dollar and I have 98 cents to pocket and tote around all day long. I hate that! IMO, pennies are quite literally obsolete. It takes far more money to have cashiers count out pennies than the savings if there were no such coinage. I even think counting nickels rather than simply rounding to the nearest dime is cost prohibitive. When rounding, more often than not, the retailer wins out. As it stands, the retailer loses due to productivity costs, not to mention customer retention problems due to slow moving checkout lines, etc. There isn't much you can buy for less than a dime anyway, and if there is, they could be sold as 2 for's. Better yet, just raise the price to a dime. It's a win for the supply chain, and there are less insignificant coins to tote around in your pocket or in the cup holder of your car. I vote to get rid of all coins below a dime and round up and down. Rant over...

J M O N
I point them out to my kids so they can pick it up. They don't have any issues getting dirty whatsoever.

ricktate
Well the gov. looses money on making pennies so they should be gone. But certain brand of politics wont give it up cause the mint is in their state. The money they lose is just a waste we could use on 100 other things like free school lunches for one. If you wont pick up a 5 dollar bill because of germs well I will pick them up all day long. As far as germs go remember the lack of kids getting dirty was the cause of polio because they weren't exposed to the germs as kids. I think a lot of problems we have now is we are to sanitary for or own good. When I was a kid I was outside in the dirt bare foot exposed to everything my feet were so tough I could walk on glass or 100 degree day pavement that was probably 140+ degrees . I remember the asphalt squishing when ever I stepped on I actually liked the it felt good.

We'd also walk for miles through fields and ditches and drink the ditch water if we got real thirsty.

A quick swipe; no counting; 2-3% cash back, and I'm outta there. No coinage in pockets.

My boys couldn't pass up a dirt pile, and when it rained it was even better:
CECAA850
I absolutely pick up change. No issues here. I've got a 5 gallon bucket at home that I've thrown pennies in for years. We recently decided to get rid of them and have been rolling them up in wrappers. I have no idea what the cash value will be but I'll bet that it's well over $100.00. The bucket was 3/4 to 7/8 full and probably weighed 80 + - lbs.
oldtimer
Efficient market theory suggests that if you don't pick it up, someone else will. On Wall Street it's how lots of people make money (figuratively). The old joke is that an economist and a financier spot a $20 bill on the side walk. The economist says, it can't be a $20 bill because in an efficient market someone would have picked it up. The financier picks it up.

Not just on Wall St. I've represented a car dealer and met other car dealers with that same mode for making a buck., My brother's like that, too. He has his financial fingers in about 20 different pies. I've come to realize that making money and using smart financial sense for yourself really is a personality trait.
