    • Porting the woofer chamber: Back when I was at Universal Studios, they had "Sensurround" Subwoofers with 18" woofers made by Cerwin Vega. We "found" these "W" bass-horn boxes under the stage at the Hitchcock Theater. I tested and found they were really 60hz boxes unless you extended the mouth about 9 feet!...as they did have extensions to do that. But their sealed woofer chamber was 9 cubic feet. So I modeled it and added an 8~10" round port and tuned to 25 hz. Then added a LR crossover and parametric EQ and walla, I had a pretty tight 25HZ .1 channel subwoofer for film! It was not as tight as a fully horn-loaded sub, but much better than your average bass reflex box. So ya, porting the woofer chamber works well!
    • Almost back to abby-normal...
    • People place a high value on aesthetics. 90% of the DIY efforts I’ve seen would be relegated to the garage by the Mrs.    “Garage system” and “Man Cave” is code for “not in my living room”.
    • I am none of those things, but sure, I dream of having some high end gear. I've also heard some $100k+ speakers, and found my MWM/La Scala mash-up sounded better.   People today don't want plywood boxes in their. The expensive cabinets/veneers won't make speakers sound better, but good looks helps sell.   Maybe it's partly because I was around musicians and recording/broadcast studios where folks were more interested in how well something worked, not how nice it looked.
    • I took an 80s vintage La Scala, replaced the t-35 tweeter diaphragms and tri-amped them. I crossed over and processed with a Carvin XD-360. I time aligned and eq'd too It made a huge difference. QSC class  A/B amps were plenty of power for this incredibly efficient system. They (flown) are now the main PA speakers in our church. Interestingly I tried a JBL 2226 for the woofer and that did not work well at all. The original paper cone (Jensen?) worked much better. This new AL6/7 really changes a bunch with the (12") woofer chamber now ported and the horn going over to a tractrix with the new driver configuration. Tri-Amping is always better than the passive and leaves much more adjustability to the system. The new active system here should bring new performance to an older design!
    • Yes, they dig down to 45. I found setting them at 60 in my space worked very well seamlessly handing off to the sub. A bit of noodling around and they sounded together like floor standers for music. My rears are set at 80.
