  1. Morning gang: Yet another day of mucky thick smoke filled air to deal with, smoke settles in west during morning/afternoon then blows east at night. The smell is that of wet burnt wood, visual reference 4 to 6 miles, not my kind of flying weather, so today is another day of being a "Hanger Rat". Tarheel must be keepin busy, a good thing. Detel likely recovering from birthday bash.

  3. Why are so many of you picking on IbizaFlame? All he said was no thanks I think I'll stick with my Polk subs. Sheesh... Also, why is everybody hammering these new subs, including you IbizaFlame? Are you all having a bad day? I came here to cheer up, and now I need a drink.

  6. Na I'm ok, just stayed up real late last night enjoying the cool weather 58 last night and haven't felt that since last winter. I was just reading and looking at pic's of the fires out west, and a good wind to blow out the smoke only makes the fires worse, California will be crispy waiting on a rain to put it out. When I was younger I was a beginner hanger rat, my dad and uncle had a company repairing planes and helicopters at the New Orleans airport on the lakefront and I would hang out there. It was a non commercial airport so no big jets, all mid size and private planes. They made me a go-cart from leftover plane parts, even had the rectangle steering wheel from a Cessna. I would ride around the hangers and even the landing strips on slow days, it was much more relaxed 45 years ago.

  7. I thank the vintage gods that I stocked up on good vintage tuibes for my gear before the prices went crazy and the stocks became so rare. Once I began to understand my preferences in tubes for my specific gears, I stocked up. Ebay used to be a real treasure trove in tubes - especially back when people didn't really trust euro sellers. I've bought tubes from Sweden, Turkey, Germany, Canada....even Russia. I located all kinds of stuff, like Siemens and Phillips 6922 and 7308, as well as GZ34, Phillips Holland 12AX7 and 12AU7....all true NOS. I have a different take on tube rolling, though. I tended to listen for a few weeks before making any changes - assuming the sonics weren't a total "flop". I find that what is heard initially isn't always the best total impression. I want the tubes good and hot, and want to listen across a broad range of sources and music types before making a final decision. I like Philips Holland late 50's/early 60's in 12AX7, 12AU7, and 6DJ8 family tubes in most of my newer gears, and Tele 12AX7s for my vintage Mac stuff. And of course always use Mullard GZ34 as my exclusive GZ34. About the only current/recent production tubes I use whatsoever are the Penta Labs KT88 in my VRDs. Everything else are the old stuff. Using the best in vintage tubes brings out the best in my gears, and the totality of improvements really make a difference. Good parts and tubes in good gear make my gear "upgrade-proof". It took years to figure it out, though Totally worth it once done. These days I just listen

  8. I wheeled-n-dealed in the DFW area pitting Tweeter who Klipsch was getting out of against Ultimate Electronics which they were going into....I got the RSW-15 for $1195 and the RSW-12 for $899...Wow--That was 12 years ago and they have been enjoyed almost every night since. In fact, it's time to listen to some tunes!

  9. Rick, I'm not going to start a gray vs. black plate tube discussion "war!" But, if you really want to evaluate differences in brands (as that is much more likely to render sonic differences than the color of the plate or whether the pins are gold plated or not), have a trusted friend come over and swap tubes while you are blindfolded. Then simply listen to no more than a 2 minute track without changing the position of the volume control. You may be amazed at the conclusions you draw when the knowledge of which tubes you are hearing is removed from your consideration. The sonic differences are usually traceable to manufacturer differences in inter-electrode capacitance, transconductance, and other factors. And even from the same manufacturer, variations from one lot to another may be audible as a result of the normal production tolerances. In any event, with small signal tubes the lifespan should be so long that once you find those you prefer it's unlikely you will need to change them for a very long time. Maynard

  11. One of these days, I'm going to have a long talk with that boy... Did the first test and afterwards, received an e-mail from supervisor in red talking about the test deadline rapidly approaching. Guess it is time to go slow now, as I do not want to be reminded...maybe tomorrow, I will continue...

  16. Up early this morning. Went out to breakfast then did volunteer work at the library and had lunch at the same place a few hours later. Cooler here this morning and rain. Gave critter a bone on the back porch. Checked out a classic at the library Ayn Rand " Atlas Shrugged". All 1168 pages of it! May make another pot of coffee. This is important stuff guys....try to remember. Cheers Gents

  18. I'm hard to please. But seriously...my qualms lie with calling it how I see it. I won't get a chance to formally test these in the foreseeable future due to lack of retailers in my area, so I can only really go off of specs, off of features - basically what Chad has provided us with. I'm just not a raving fan over what I see. Doesn't mean they're bad - just that I'm not really interested in this flavor of kool-aid. I will however have that drink!

  19. No adjustable phase, just a 0-180 switch. Seemed like they skimped on the amp features. Makes you wonder about the rest of the sub. Those 2 features couldn't have been that expensive to integrate into the amp.

  23. The Duggans is tasting mighty fine this Monday morning. I have no plan of the day, coffee w/wife. 80s today, dry w/fires, normal in Kalifornia for this time of year. Hear on the news last night, all current fires suspected arson, yup just another normal Kalif season.

I guess I have just been lucky, wonder if it's why I have an iron stomach as my wife says ? I can eat anything anytime of the day and never have a problem. Happy Birthday! Knew I was drinking hard cider for somebody . Cheers Here is to your constitution, many more! Too bad I do not, lol!

  26. A 45 SET amplifier will work with Cornwalls, and will get average listening levels...but that all depends on the size of the room. If it is large to huge listening room, then the 1.5 watt 45 could be a bit on the light side for power. If the room is small, and if one listens primarily below 85 decibels, then a single-ended 45, 2A3, or even a SEP 6BQ5 would give moderate to loud levels. You won't ever get a continuous 105-115 decibels, but I doubt you are interested in SPL numbers when you want to build a SE 45 amplifier. The 2.5 watt 2A3 will net a extra watt of power, but I never noticed much differences (slight) in power between 45 and 2A3...just tonality the most. A single ended pentode connected 6BQ5/EL-84 amplifier can sound very nice with Cornwalls, at least to me with mine. I've plowed a many single-ended 6BQ5 amplifier and amplifier circuits through my Cornwalls...Motorola, RCA, Magnavox console pulls, and the RH84 circuit. (which was eventually a completed amp) They can sound really good. If it is a large to huge room, then a push-pull 6BQ5 amp with about 7-8 watts per side would work pretty good.(like Chris A mentions) My Scott LK-48B has plenty of boogie factor with good sound. Mike

  28. All speakers have "a sound to them" in a given space and listener postition. Otherwise we would only need ONE speaker in the whole world. None of my comments are negative at all, and most people on the internet don't know what they are talking about when they make comments of any kind. Especially those who have never owned them or heard them at all. In some regards, they do sound better. The imaging is superior. Mine are 60x40 dispersion and not as refined as Danley's latest offerings 12 years later. They are in a radically different space with the same subs and electronics as a 90x60 K-402 horn stack with Quarter Pies on the bottom. The main thing is that they are a 3-way passive network with double 12" woofers in a horn that is SMALLER than the K-402 alone and the TD-1's cover from 60-18Khz, which is amazing in itself. The only thing that makes them anything similar to my former stack is the B&C tweeter at the Apex of the thing. Plus, I'm now forced to sit about 3 feet closer (9 feet vs. 12 before). So if you factor in the sound quality for the small size, it should be compared to a Heresy rather than a giant stack like yours or my old "mini stack" with the Quarter Pies. Even in this smaller form factor, I feel that I have not given up ANY sound quality at all and I'm thrilled with the sound quality and pinpoint imaging. Even if I stick my face in the front of the horn, it sounds like a single sound source for the entire band. The sound has all of the "micro detail" that I had come to love about the K-402/1133/DE-250/QSC top end. Female vocals are still as lush with the "she is here" feeling. But I still can't expect the natural bass of these things to be on par with my Quarter Pie bass horn, which only gave up 5 Hz. at the bottom, as compared to your full size MWMs. That would really be unfair. Besides size, if I factor what little money I spent for them, it's no contest, which it isn't anyway, but you seem to make it so. Everyone that has heard them so far is amazed. Had a non-technical friend (Klipsch owner also) hear them last week and I had to unplug the center speaker connector for him to believe that speaker was off because the vocals were so perfectly centered in a 17 foot wide soundstage. This wall of sound is achieved with only two speakers and sub, so it's impressive that way alone. If I ever find the need in the future, I can always rebuild my stack with the K-402's/1133 which is the best mid horn/driver combo I've ever owned or heard, bar none. I can always re-do it as finances allow. But for the moment, I don't feel the need to do anything else. Based on my space constraints (which you don't have), I have the best system I can possible hear at this time.

  30. Wish I could say it was related to that!!! I use coconut oil on dry wood in lieu of paste wax as it works even better and has very long persistence. Unfortunately, the rag looks identical to my car window rags and got mixed in with them. Obviously, going through the washing machine didn't take care of the oil that got absorbed into the material. When the sun hits the windshield it almost turns opaque!!! Will try some of the suggestions above. Guess I can always resort to brake cleaner if all else fails, but I don't like to use perc if I can possibly avoid it. So, now you know the "sad" story............ Maynard

  31. Gorm, I use a FX DAC-II in my system also. What different tubes have you tried in it? So far I've used the new make Tung-Sol's that came with it and a pair of new issue Mullard's. Not sure yet which I like better, not sure I can hear a difference really. I also have a rebuilt Fisher integrated amp coming that should prove interesting to roll tubes through. You really have to try the 5751s GE Black plate, they take the DAC to another level. Do you ever make it up to Iowa? Love to show off the system at some point to other people. I'll put those on the short list. I didn't know you could plug a 5751 in a 12AX7 spot. I like what I read about those GE's tho. What does a NOS pair usually retail for? The guys on hifiwigwam really like Siemans ECC83's in the Jolida too. This isn't the GE tube you're referring to is it. : http://www.thetubestore.com/Tubes/12AX7-ECC83-Tube-Types/JAN-GE-5751 Also, how do you connect your Jolida to your CD player? I'm using an optical cable but have a coax cable I'll try eventually. And if I'm ever up your way I'll holler, I'd love to see your setup. http://www.ebay.com/itm/NOS-Matched-Pair-GE-GL-5751-5751-black-plate-triple-mica-5-Star-triode-tubes-/331322113414?pt=Vintage_Electronics_R2&hash=item4d24563d86 These are the tubes. I have the Jolida connected to my Squeezebox. That is connected to my computer via CAT5. All my content is FLAC based. It is connected via a COAX.

  37. It's nice to see a good old tube discussion break out... seems like it has been a while! I like Tele's for the Fisher and Scott. The VRD loves a CBS 7318 in the 12au7 slot and for the 12ax7 slot I've been trading between Brimar and a Mullard 10m. I admit to using Sovtec 5ar4 in the VRD's as I never pinned down a difference in sound between the Mullard and the Sovtec. I just haven't taken the time for that yet.

  38. It really is, and to everyone who was there visiting. Arlington was also, changing of the guards at the tomb of the unknown soldier is something to see, They still bring the caskets to be buried on a carriage pulled by horses, seeing this was a surprise and what looked like endless white crosses. When we went to Arlington our guide was a little old lady probably 80 years old, being told it can be a rough walk we thought we had it easy because of her age, she almost walked us to death !

  40. If memory serves my correctly, the RSW-15 was around $1.5K. That would probably put the RSW-12 around $1.2k and the RSW-10 around $1k MSRP. I am sure someone will step in and correct me. Both of the RSW subs that I have owned have been bargains I picked up off CL.

  43. Also use a felt rug pad under your area rugs, which come in various thickness, preferably 3/8" or 1/2". Naturally you don't want to cover too much of your pergo floors, but perhaps you could get a larger area rug and still see and enjoy a large portion of your pergo. We have hickory hardwood floors and a 8' x 10.5 foot rug between two L shaped couches, but there is plenty of hickory still visible. The right balance is a personal preference. Haven't done the percentages, but I think the rug is only covering about 30-40%. Then again, I am not using Khorns in this room, but using the 7.1 reference HT setup. I guess Rick and I were posting the same time.
