  3. Well my coffee and breakfast are all ready down the hatch. I did receive my HID light kit, however do to poor quality concerns I am working on sending it back. Found this is one of those things you want to spend a little extra money on. So I might repurpose the cash into something along the lines of some spring spacers for the front end as it seems to be sagging.

  7. Nothing like time to enjoy. Started raining here but, couldn't get anything like that for us out of the weatherman. Ya'll stay warm down here too, there Sancho... Yes there Dave, you may get onto checking what it does for the ice too. New York, lower NE states keep getting pelted, then frozen between the thaws. Glad am not an electrical engineer. PS-coffee

  8. Morning gang 68 predicted today Second cup down, maybe a nap and wake up when it gets to 68. 58 now, cold and wet feeling outside. Looks like the S/E will be a tad cold today. On another note: Forums go through changes, mostly due to a few select waccos post that cause conflict, soon to be reduced to personal attacks. No one on the C&C thread has contributed to this happening as i see it. Look at the bright side, you could be a Radio Shack employee

  9. Mornin' guys. 1.5 cups down and more on the way. More snow on the way. Supposedly "4 to 9 inches". Nothing like leaving yourself a small margin of error. Probably a good time to schedule your spring break ski vacation. Hey JL, love the addition to the painting. There are a bunch of other additions I can think of but this is a family forum!! Check back in a while.

  10. Thanks all, and since a few people asked because of this post -- things are still going great at the new job. I'm not selling out of desperation (not yet!) I'm afraid not! I will be anxious to see all the pics, though.

  11. I understand how you are with matching your equipment but the 1700 and 1800(yes they are dvd players but very good cd players)sound just as good on cd as anything. I have both and have used oppo and used a Yamaha 2000 and there are some differences most is the sabre dac. the 1700 and 1800 both use the 4 burr brown dac and sound incredibly good for about $100. My primary playback is cd and the 17&1800 are very good sleepers for sound quality. I do use several other cd players for other functions but my go to sound quality player is the 17&1800

  12. Wonder what a subwoofer would do with ice on a roof, other for instance. Those roof rakes look like a cold idea, but necessary. Like some of the ones we hear about and see on the forum. Saying as little as possible, since no one from the outside will ever read...sad. BS...just kidding. coffee

  13. Good afternoon from the great northwest! Coffee felt better this morning as last nights rain did manage to freeze overnight. Took it eeaaaaasssyy going to work today. So I got introduced to the concept of a horn loaded sub for my HT on another thread and my wheels have been spinning all night over it. I have much research to do, I know nothing about them except from what surface stuff I've read on here. I love this place that I can get one or two sentences from other people who are at least in a comparable arena of crazy about sound as I am and be completely derailed for a day (sigh - or more)! end random tangent. Have a great day all - enjoy!

  14. I recently join the Heritage family with my first pair of Forte I w Crites XO. I alway wondered which was better for my taste in music. I had little interest in the Heritage line due to their size and old style look. I have had time to setup both pair and get the best sound out of each speaker respectively. A few caveats on the 2 channel setups: Speakers were level matched Forte I, Yaquin VK 2100 tube hybird amp, setup via Samsung BDP for distance and level RF 7's, Pioneer Elite SC 35 and MCACC calibration, set to small with 4 Dayton Ultimax 18 in. subs Jazz: the Forte have a slight edge with jazz midrange and femal vocals. Anything with deep or complex bass goes to the RF 7's. Sade, Celine DIon, Maysa and Hooverphonic's sound spendid on the Forte's. Paul Hard Castle, Paul Taylor, Euge Groove and others sound great on the RF 7's. modern pop like Lady Gaga, Jay Z, Justin timberlake, Nicki Minaj sound way better on the RF 7's due to the heavier bass music. A lot of the old school stuff like Billy Joel, Phil Collins, Commodores, Michael Jackson and other sound perfect on the Forte's. Back in the day, the music was listen to without subs. Some of the few orchestra type music that I own, it was a toss up depending on how complex the mixes are in the piece. The Heritage speakers share the midrange sound which is what attacked me to the line. Clarity and detail are outstanding. The RF 7's don't have the metallic sound that is evident in the Cornwalls, LaScala, Heresy, Forte I and Forte II speakers. This is most likely related to the transitor mod. The midrange is slightly more prominent in the Forte. This is going to sound funny to RF 7 owners, the 7's are more laid back in character. Neither speaker appeared fatiguing during the hours long comparison. There is no clear winner for what I listen to. I love both speakers. One day I will switch around the amps and see how the Forte I do with the Pioneer Elite and the fancy calibration mix with the subs. The RF 7 run fine off the tube hybird amp and can reach extreme levels without a problem. The Yaquin amp is rated at 80 watts. I would like to try some Mc gear on the Forte I and some of the other amps that I have seen at a couple of our Chicago meeting. The gtg's are a great way to see and hear different gear. I am sure after more time with the Forte I that I will have a few more thoughts to share.

  15. You are absolutely correct. Roger Water's Amused to Death does exactly as you described, except maybe for the depth of the sound stage. On my system some sounds appear to be well beyond the outside of the house. And by that I mean 100+ feet away. It's really uncanny to close your eyes & point to where you hear the sound coming from, open them, and see that you're pointing well to the left or right of the left or right speaker. There are plenty of other ways to manipulate, or sound I say simulate, "surround sound". On Pink Floyd's Final Cut, I could swear the walking sound was coming from someone in the hall behind me. I would always turn & look thinking it was my wife taking a load of clothes to the laundry room. There always was no one there. Peter Gabriel's Up has similar qualities. On the track Growing Up the swirling synthesizer sound appears to come out of the left speaker, swirl around your head & then zoom into the right speaker. Other tracks also exhibit the same "beyond the left & right speaker" effects as Amused to Death. I have a cheap Q-Sound processor. I've tried it on my own acoustical recordings of choir/ensemble/orchestra as well as on regular recordings played on my main system & haven't liked the results. So the big guys are obviously doing something more/different than what is capable with run of the mill inexpensive Q-Sound processing.

  16. 40 degrees and rain for the second day, been busy making signs for the wife and cooking, smoking some smoked sausage for red beans last night and some pork loin and chicken for my (somewhat diet). I chickened out on doing some pork butts considering the time it takes, maby this weekend ?

  19. Got my Reference IV speakers yesterday and all arrived in great shape. Thanks Billybob for posting. The RF-62 IV's are much heavier than I expected. The build quality looks very good on them and the RC-52 IV center. I thought I might have been a little trigger-happy at first but looking at these now at $400 shipped I feel pretty good about where I am so far. Of course I want to keep my Sunfire sub, but is there a real benefit in keeping everything else from the Reference IV line for a "tuned" setup? Still need to find a pair of RS-52's or RS-62's. Will post up pics later

  20. The chart stops too soon. From 18 - 30 should not be left alone for more than a few hours unless you want your home littered with beer cans and urine stains. For the ages shown in the chart, the general advice makes sense for the safety of the children. After 17, the young person's safety is still important, but it starts to be in lockstep with the safety of your house.

  21. Well really what it is Michael is theses wonderful speakers ( at least one set I know of) are trying to return home to their birthplace or within a stones throw away as we say in these parts!

  22. Just so long as we are talking about every now and then and not having latch-key kids, I think the chart above is reasonable. I reckon it depends on how big an idiot the kid is (disclaimer: this is tongue in cheek meaning maturity). I have 3 sons, so I know the stuff they can get into.

  23. I have owned Parasound (220 x 5) and Sherbourn (200 x 7) and both are rock solid amps. You may not "need" 200 watts/ch but there is nothing wrong with having extra headroom. IMO, the Adcom would be my last choice.

  24. Picked the Onkyo TX-NR5008 up today. Got everything hooked up, ran the Audyssey XT32 with 8 positions and just as I began running some demos, my wife comes in and asks me to turn it down since it was my youngest daughter's bedtime. Onkyo seems to be working good as new.

  25. I'll add that I use a large soft paint brush to clean paper cone drivers. Just sweep back and forth like you're sweeping a floor. It seems to get the dust that's stuck in the paper a little better than canned air or a microfiber. I've cleaned up some filthy drivers this way.

  26. There are a few out there but they are best suited for pro sound applications. The Klipsch KPT-1802 is an option but its freakin huge ( big as 2 full size THT's) Your best bet is a DIY design, build it yourself or have an experienced builder do it for you for best results.

  27. You don't need horn loaded. Just build a 45 cu ft enclosure (or a spare bathroom) and put this in it: The RE 18" XXX.

  28. Oh yeah. Time to put some Blu Ray audio and DVDA's through the Jubs.

  29. Horn loaded subwoofers work well with all main speakers as they are much lower in distortion thus sound better. The only down side is size, luckily there are many options available to fit in just about any room. Even an 8" loaded table tuba will outperform your 15" Klipsch sub.

  30. good point. I have seen a few large tube amps that had trouble powering planars and heard of others failing

  31. This is just my opinion, but a horn loaded subwoofer goes very well with a horn loaded bass bin such as found on the La Scala, Belle, Khorn. Since you are not running any of those, I too would agree, add a second SW-115. However, my TubaHT manages to fill my entire unfinished basement with bass, I have never been as happy with any other sub as I am with this one. I have no regrets pushing my Sunfire Signature aside for it. I don't mix them either... just couldn't get it to sound right, so one or the other.

  36. Had forum member ETC over last night. We had the chance to play with this sub, which is the first time since I built it . I know, I know how could you build something and not use it. I just didn't have the proper gear to try it out. So I took my Drifts off of the wall and ran the cross over on the minidsp at 80hz. Man we had things shaking, we even were able to hook up my ttls. I used to use the ttls with the Drifts, but I didn't have stilts built for them. That was a huge difference as well. Now if you want to know my opinion on the 2. I would have to efficiency the ttls wins, I didn't run any sweeps to see which one went lower. But I feel the THspud would win, along with power handling. I wouldn't mind trying one of the THTLS, or some of the others that have been built. I really need to decide how I want to set up my front stage, as the subs will have impact on that. I can only imagine how things will sound once I get the room closed off, along with some sound treatments.

  41. What age do you get them cell phones? My GF's son is 13, he got a cell phone a year ago. She can and does monitor him constantly if she is away. She is a bit more conservative then that chart. She won't let him walk or bike anywhere. She can do face time and see what is going on. Seems like technology is what they need protection from, but also can be your friend.

  42. Shipping to Alaska??????$$$$$ I'm slow but I can be taught - I rarely read the subwoofer section so I hadn't read up on your builds. I'll read up a little and see if I can get some questions answered. I'm all for exploring having one built, (even shipping to AK if it's "right") I have to try to weigh out the apples oranges factor and the cost benefit vs buying a new SW 115 for a screaming deal, brand new, w/warranty, etc. I'll definitely do some reading on the sub forums. Try to figure out what might be deeper, tighter, more cost effective. Thank you again for your respective inputs! Post #400 for me. Hm, I read far more than I post, but the experience here on this forum has been invaluable.

  43. On big speakers in small rooms. If the room is a compromise why compromise the speaker? I've used and heard Heresy Belles Khorns and Jubs in a small to medium rooms. Bigger speaker = gooder. Headphones are cool. I could get into that....
