  10. I understand knowledge & experience = $$$. $100 evaluation fee seems incredibly high to me. I bet they don't get too many people that say "no thanks" to the repair seeing how much they have in it out of the gate. The shop I took it to charges $30 bench fee and is credited towards the balance if you choose to have the repairs done.

  11. About the same, ~5 watts, and almost entirely in the sub channel. ~100mV across the L,C, & R at wide-open throttle. The discussion between amps and "How much?" often falls short because what's really at play is often times not power delivery, but rather the transient behavior of each device. Almost no data, from any manufacturer, is ever provided in that regard. Even fewer people have the tools, knowledge, and time to investigate that, in particular case by case. There's a lot more to it than just raw, calculated power numbers.

  12. Don't confuse me, is it burgers or chilly I ask because that's how my chili starts out, I smoke them then cut them up. I did once see a recipe for chili with coffee in it You got me thinking.........For burgers I like to add a couple of eggs and some good Italian breadcrumbs and other seasoning, but my favorite is 40-50% hot sausage mixed in.......now I'm thinking about food...

  14. So after spending a few days having some good listening sessions, I've come to the conclusion the La Scalas are my favorite speaker I've ever owned for music, and I'm sure will be right up there if not better for movies than my 7 II's.

  22. We had cold in the tens, then a thaw to 40, then the next day heavy rain all day rain, which turned to heavy snow last night. I can drive in snow, I've been doing it all my life and I'm very comfortable with it. What I can't do (nobody can) is drive in ice, especially when it transitions from rain to ice, which in West Virginia we call "black ice." Our average temp this time of year is 50 degrees. It is supposed to be -3 tonight. I'll be glad when global warming gets here. Here is the view where I am working on my CF-4's, looking out the window into my back yard.

  25. $200 just seems a lot better, but that's prolly just me. But I think you are wise not to have them remove the replaced parts, put in the bad ones(?) so that someone else can do it again. Why? Because you run the risk of lifting the foil on the circuit board with all this rework. Then wires have to be added to fix it and it can get real ugly from there.

  26. Four hours labor and new caps, not necessarily a bad deal for $200. Ninety day is a good amount of time to see if it is working. A working amp is easier to sell If you decide not to keep it.

  28. He stated several times that he didn't want to have his tech remove the parts that had been added so he didn't have any intention of leaving the parts in there unless I paid for the labor. His tech had 4 hrs labor (not really my problem). It's all good. I'll just make sure I have something in writing about the 90 day warranty on all 7 channels, not just the ones he worked on.

  32. I agree to a point. I'd fire up the patio stereo and blast tunes while I cleaned. It's no fun when it's nasty and cold out however. It also takes me away from other projects. I will say however that I'm one of the last hold outs on the block that does his own lawn. Almost everyone else has a service. I still enjoy pushing a (non self propelled) mower around the yard although I have no idea why I like the process. The mower is quieter than the kids!

  37. The $100 "evaluation" fee goes towards the repair, if the repair goes over another $150, $250 total, they call me. Oh, I forgot to mention the 3 week waiting list. Just couldn't throw out a $1,700 amp.

  38. Actually, I have been looking at the Parasound products, and noticed their 2 channel THX Ultra rated amps used go for $250. The THX rating means something. I think the amps are around 200-250 W each channel. Their web site has all the info on the disc units incl dates of mfg. Worth a read. https://www.gearslutz.com/board/high-end/99032-thx-scam.html Way overkill for his LaScalas, plus he will be operating the amp at a higher distortion area of the amps design. I would just get a good 25 wpc stereo amp or receiver... That is why I suggested the Yamaja class A amps that were built into their Receivers, and integrated amps. He would then be operating in their designed low distortion area. Depending on the amps are designed, the first 20-30 watts may be class A, so the rest if fluff. Just curious, are new Receivers even using Class A/B anymore... Or have they all switched to class D amps? The logic behind Class A is simple, but hot. AB is simple, but the first units had transition problems, I think measured as slew rate and TIM. A at low Watt then AB seems state of the art. Class D with quantization error, seems like a "Green Amp" solution, or at least a cheap one with the star?

  40. I'm not trying to get caught up in the higher watts game, I am looking for a well suited Solid State receiver, amp, separate units, integrated amp that will work and match up with the LaScala's characteristics. A kinda of best matched scenario for sound and only sound. I can have it loud and unbearable but I would like it loud and fantastic sounding and soft and fantastic sounding! I have all the power I need in the Kenwood amp and my Sony, on top of that I also have a 200 watt/Ch amp to hook to them if I wanted to. Most people are telling me that if I want the best sound I need to go tubes, while that may be true I want simplicity and ease and stay with in my comfort zone of Solid State gear. I will check into the Yamaha stuff that was mentioned and I do honestly appreciate the feedback and advice that you are all giving to the new guy on the block. Awesome to see, thanks, Greg.

  42. Sup gentlemen? High of 76 today. Front should blow through this afternoon (poss 45 mph winds) and 32 degrees tomorrow. Like they say, if you don't like the weather in South East TX, just wait. Last weekend I made the mistake of borrowing a co-workers robotic pool cleaner. My wife absolutely loved it. We had a Polaris installed when the pool was new and describing it as a POS would be a compliment. We've been manually cleaning it since about the second year of ownership which takes almost an hour. No more. I ordered a robot this morning. You just plug it in, drop it in the water, push one button and take it out when it's done. It's incredible. What a time saver. They're pricey, but the time savings alone made it worth it. I NEVER would have taken the plunge (HA!) if I hadn't borrowed and used one first.

  44. I definitely appreciate all of the advice. I believe there is indeed wisdom in seeking the counsel of many. It allows for me to see the situation from other perspectives and from people that are outside the scope of the situation. With emotion set aside, the honest answer is no. I wanted some time to think about it because I didn't get the impression he was positive he knew what the problem was. The guy said that he found 2 capacitors that were not measuring as high as the other 5. I asked him how fixing two caps would fix the issue when at one time, I had up to 4 channels that did not turn on. If he could have provided me with a logical explanation, I would have felt more secure in his ability. I wanted to think about it so that I wouldn't make an irrational decision (been there, done that many times). The next day I was busy trying to get things ready for my trip to Alabama to see wakejunkie and figured I would call make a final decision after I returned home because I knew (or at least I thought) they wouldn't work on it without me saying yes to the quote. I was thinking it was going to be close to what I had just paid to have the Onkyo repaired by them which was $165.00. $165.00 to $280.00 is a big difference. That's that part that I struggled with. I have no desire to be a jerk in this situation. I have nothing to gain by doing so. No money saved is worth compromising my integrity, character and testimony. I'm hoping we can come to an agreement that will work for both of us. If they say they can do it for $150, I'm fine with that. If it's above $200, I'll let Adam fix it for $120. I would be perfectly fine with that. They fixed the Onkyo and I've had no problems with that. If they resolve this in a professional manner that is fair for both of us, I would be glad to give them my business in the future. Honestly, I don't feel 100% confident that it is fixed. Even though they will provide a 90 day warranty, if it needs additional repair, it would require 2 more 1hr 45min round trips.

  45. in my area & others lascalas frequently sell for $1200-1600+ depending on condition & vintage of course. chorus & ii sell for 500-800, 800 being the high end in excellent shape. pretty darn close to $1k difference.

  46. WW II is the wrong analogy. We were slow to get in, it was "their" war until December 7th. The analogy was the discovery of a hole in the ozone layer and the chemicals that caused it my American scientists which led to the phased in ban of freon in aerosol sprays and other refrigerants. The Montreal Protocol was the result that has been amended several times to include other chemicals. Chemicals that increase global warming. The MP is working on the ozone hole. Koyoto is the international solution to global warming, it spells out what needs to be done and by when. We were in Koyoto, a part of the solution, then we withdrew, now we are back in it again. Personally, AGW shouldn't be our main concern. There will be more flooding in New York, othet coastal cities, more severe weather patterns, etc. and we can adapt to that and argue about what can be done all we want. The real problem, in my view, is that the pH of the ocean is 30% more acidic from carbon emissions, all man made. The number and the cause are undisputed. Aside from whatever nations that depend on the oceans we all depend on it for oxygen. If green algae begins to slow in reproduction due to pH increasing, or worse, begins dying, it is all over. The ocean, in addition to providing half of the oxygen we breath also removes half of the CO2 that is removed by photosynthesis. What I worry about is that we are not putting enough focus on the ocean in science and research to determine just how much it can take beyond what we have done already. We learned that coal burning was able to pollute the ocean to the point of toxic levels of mercury in fish in only 100 years. Pregnant women are advised to avoid all fish/seafood in this country. Climate and the weather get the attention because it plays out in storms, floods and heatwaves. A scientist sitting in a lab looking as near microscopic plants is pretty boring and diffict to understand how they are ESSENTIAL for life on the entire planet to exist.
