  2. Mornin' all. Looks like I'm max'ed out on 'likes' for now. Not much to report except our screwy weather will keep my outdoor projects on hold for a while longer. About 15 or so miles west of us a snowy mix has really messed up traffic going up into the foothills. Good day to stay down here in Denver metro. At least we're only looking at some rain and cool temps. Working up some old tunes on the Hammond, mostly old Frankie Valli/Four Seasons stuff. Got inspired watching (again) Jersey Boys BluRay the other afternoon. Have a great day and weekend. Cheers as always.

  3. Morning gang, breakfast(scrambled eggs and toast) down along with 2nd cup of coffee. Found out the alt. was good(on the Jeep), so I started digging into the electrical and found some corrosion on one of the power wires. Went a head and changed the oil, she seems to be running smoth again. Well off to the vet, then a soccer game. Have a good one guys, and gals.

  4. Be very careful. I would move the RV asap. Some of those insecticides can cause serious illness or even death when inhaled. I saw a recent news article about a condo that was sprayed in the Virgin Islands (I think that was the location) and the entire family, except Mom was in critical condition.

  7. I don't care who you are or what you've got, that's a pretty fair garage setup. +++ So, what are the refrigerator sized speakers? The speakers are DIY. Altec 511B horns with Altec 802-8G drivers, JBL 077 tweeter and JBL 2235H woofers. Cabinets are a combination so Baltic birch and MDF. The veneer is sapele pommele with a lot of lacquer.

  8. AND YOUR WALLET --- it’s a fundraiser. Unless you intend to win the crawfish eating contest and donate your winnings. Well the only other way to donate would be to buy drinks and hamburgers or hot dogs, which would only be for kids or people who never grew taste buds. We didn't go but this is last year, there were over 10,000 people, but I'm going to be all over the crawfish this year, rain can't hurt boiled crawfish at all.

  10. Yes it's Friday. Saterday our daughter is bringing us to a fundraiser for hospice companies in the area, (she's a hospice nurse) it's a crawfish boil. $30 a person to get in and all the crawfish you can eat, 60 different teams boiling as a competition. Last year they boiled 47,000 pounds of crawfish, and there are 3 bands, the first and last is the one I want to hear, I love Zydeco music and Rockin Dopsie and the Zydeco Twisters are going to be there. The bad part is it is expected to rain, so I will dress to be wet and bring the waterproof camera, either way I'm eating a bunch of crawfish. you can only get so wet http://www.hospicefoundationofthesouth.org/crawfish-cookoff-2015/

  14. Brie, I am extremely humbled by this as I find my communication skills to be quite poor and I am in constant fear of miscommunication. Tthe fact is that the only things I can write about are things that are part of my soul. As to you, I need to express that as a schoolboy in Texarkana we had a sense of pride in being just ahead of Mississippi in education. It has been over my lifetime that I realized that the the teachers I had were the best anywhere and that it isn't about money. The way schools are ranked is so bogus as to be meaningless. Our buildings were falling apart but our teachers were the best and most dedicated the world has to offer. I have the distinct feeling you are one of those. God bless you and your work! Dave

  20. If you have good corners, or can build them, or can build very firm artificial corners, the Khorns are distinctly superior, IMO, not only because of some more bass extention, but also in the midrange. Also, the tweeters, although identical, are more nearly at seated ear level (for people who are 6 feet or >). It is harder for some object (e.g., a knee with crossed legs) to get between your ears and the tweeters, causing a treble shadow. I have Khorns right and left, with a Belle center. They are all good.

  25. I believe that there is a much bigger issue going on that is not well-known yet and there is a big focus and push to extend the debt of these students as far as possible. I believe that what you see with her friends is the result of Wall Street finding a way to make huge profits on student loan debt. I would be very grateful your daughter is very prudent regarding the situation and I’ve been talking with the youngest daughter, in her first year of college, about the same issues. There has practically been no attention given to Wall Street’s role in the student debt run-up. Wall Street brings in an estimated $45 billion off higher education each year and a significant portion of this amount is made from student loans. From 2011 to 2013, the amount of debt held by recent graduates increased 20 percent with a total debt amount over $1.2 trillion. The asset-backed mortgage securities (ABMS) were instrumental in the credit crisis beginning in 2007 had cooled for a while, although rebounded somewhat, so now they found a way to capitalize on student loan debt. It’s known in Wall Street circles as student loan asset-backed securities (SLABS) and they are looking for ways to grow that $1.2 trillion pie. Take a look at the special interest lobbying dollars in this area and you will find that the big Wall Street banks and other financial institutions that profit from student loan debt are spending more than ever to influence political elections and to prevent policy solutions from being are enacted. From 2008 to 2012 the amount of money Wall Street institutions gave to Congress through political donations practically doubled, from $55.9 million to over $108 million. This increase can be attributed to the 2010 Citizens United Supreme Court decision, which lifted restrictions on corporate spending to influence elections. [source: Center for Responsive Politics] Wall Street isn’t satisfied with SLABS as financial brokers have been promoting capital appreciation bonds (CABs). In fact, CABs have now been issued by more than 400 California school districts and from what I have read; some have repayment obligations of up to 20 times the principal advanced (or 2,000 percent). Not satisfied yet as financial institutions are promoting public-private partnerships (PPPs) to public universities as a funding mechanism. The private developer would provide the capital to construct facilities and the universities sign a long-term lease to occupy the space. Sure seems like a slick way to divert public money to private debt holders who can further capitalize on the venture by securitizing the debts as another type of asset-backed security. Historically, the asset-backed securities have a way of spreading out and masking the level of risk that actually exits. I’m not sure anyone has figured out a way to understand the quality of all of these many types of asset-backed securities and how far out the overall risk to the financial system has been spread. Bottom line is that somewhere down the road, it would seem reasonable that Wall Street and these debt holders may be sticking it to education institutions, students and ultimately all of us taxpayers with another unsustainable level of debt. All in the name of “we are in the business of facilitating capital formation where it is needed,” where do you suppose this will all lead?

  30. Thought I might of heard some Polka music at one time ? Sorry Dave just have to give you a hard time being a Reggae, classic rock, jazz, blues, zydeco, Motown kind of person, Ok everything else but rap and opera. But it was all good, except one or two songs It's nice to hear different things, it was quite the change in music styles when you walked from outside to inside. They were playing some wild stuff outside, as you were inside, just different by around 125 years more or less. It was fun and the people at Rodneys place could not have been nicer, cool people and beautiful property. Once they got the KP 600's dialed in they were amazing at any distance, clean and powerful, last time we heard any were at the Pilgrimage Trey organized and they were powered buy live bands. Seadogs Cornwalls sounded great also, I didn't pay attention to what equipment was used at different times but really like the vinyl, and whatever the large tubes that were on the far right, but no can't get back into vinyl Christy would kill me.

  35. I hope so. It is a bit intimidating though. A lady at work once told me, “you know that filter between the brain and the mouth that keeps people from saying inappropriate things … you don’t have one.” I wouldn’t want to be run out of town (unless the next town over is more fun--see i can’t help myself).Seriously, my problem (which in my opinion isn’t a problem) is that i’m rarely serious and would rather joke around and laugh -- sometimes i just pick the wrong time to do that … like at my Aunt’s funeral (that’s a story for another time). Steve Since I made it thru the weekend without being banned I believe that you will go thru with flying colors!

  46. I would also think that the DeanG crossovers are contributing to me not preferring the Rotel as much. Reason being is the DeanG Crossovers did smoothe out the sound but it also reduced a tad from the top end. With the Rotel being neutral + the less bright sound from the DeanG, I think my ears actually prefer a brighter sound. Wish I had a pair of stock RF-7ii to do some direct A/B comparison with.

  47. In case nobody mentioned it......they are worth every penny, even at new prices. I paid $3500 for my used Klipschhorns and would have been just as happy buying new. Good U.S. labor doesn't (nor should it!) come cheap.

  48. I didn't pay $9,000 for my new 2015 Klipschorns! Find a local dealer that will work with you. Heck, some dealers will give you 15-20% off the Heritage stuff just so they can check it out themselves. My dealer had NEVER seen or heard a pair of Klipschorns. After the shipping company dropped them off everybody came by to check them out! Awesome sound and great build quality! It's no wonder they are expensive!

  49. I think they are priced about right. It takes much more work to build a Khorn than some of the overpriced High End speakers we see in the magazines. And the Khorns and LS IIs probably have lower FM distortion. I wouldn't want the prices to go up, though, because I think it is a public service to have Heritage -- especially the fully horn loaded models -- heard in the few houses and stores in which they dwell. It lets people know what clean, tight speakers sound like. Now what is needed would be some showrooms (like Panasonic has for its projectors) where crowds of tourists, business people, the entertainment industry, etc. can hear Heritage and a few of the iterations of the Jub .... perhaps in New York, San Francisco, La La Land Hollywood, etc. I tend to agree with garyrc. I can’t speak for Klipsch and it has been a long time since I had been able to see some of the cost structure in any specific situation when I was an auditor and, of course, each company will have some variability in cost structure and buying power in relation to inventory such as drivers, various other parts, wood, veneer, etc. However, what would you consider the “higher-end” speaker market to be in an industry where customers are very fickle and fad-driven to the point where a couple of bad reviews or even an indifferent review can scatter this fickle customer-base out in many directions? I remember guys questioning their sub-woofer purchase before even receiving it because they read a review on another sub that someone “subjectively” ranked better than the one just purchased. I'm not sure if there is a better definition of fickle and fad. Let’s throw out the $250,000 and up vanity-speaker projects that various forum members have posted links to now and then, but never amount to any real and sustainable sales volume. What are we left with, maybe the $5,000 to $40,000 a pair range actually has a sales volume in the higher-end market? It would seem that most of the Heritage speakers (e.g., Klipschorns, La Scala II, and Cornwall IIIs) fit this “higher-end” range that I’ve defined above, and, of course, the Klipsch Palladiums fit very nicely into this range. Unless you are one of these cottage industry “internet direct” companies, you have to worry about distribution channels, marketing, shipping, storage, inventory, regional sales reps, national sales reps and dealer profits, among a multitude of other aspects. What does a national sales rep or regional sales rep get these days? Maybe somewhere in the 8% - 12% range? What are the dealer expectations for profit where they will actually have any incentive to stock the speaker and even try to sell the speaker? It used to be 40% - 50% and I suspect that range hasn’t changed much. If a dealer can't make money, they are not going to carry the speaker or put much into trying to sell it. Now the manufacturer needs to layer in the potential for high overheads in relation to shipping costs and storage costs and the potential for rapid obsolescence. I believe that the “general rule of thumb” used to be the summation of parts cost plus cabinet plus assembly labor of speaker plus and test labor of speaker for which the sum is multiplied by 5 to determine a customer price in an effort to cover the many charges above that are not so readily apparent. Note that the rule of thumb apparently doesn’t include how to capture “engineering and development” costs.
