  1. You are correct. Time is money and very few shops are going to troubleshoot to component level. I spent over 20 year in electronics from audio to satellite tracking. I have worked on through hole parts and surface mount. With surface mount good magnification is a must and while you can use a solder iron, hot air is the way to go. Here is a picture of my work bench at home. My trusty Leica microscope serves me well, especially as I get older and my eyes aren't what they used to be. It's all about the tools, if you want the job to be easier.

  3. small bite. from the beginning product by product. as i have told some close friends of mine, i had never heard of klipsch much less heard from klipsch. i just a fresh engineer guy out of college, called by klipsch to interview. i got to spend about 45 minutes with paul and in those 45 minutes, i came out of his office thoroughly convinced that the only way to design speakers was to use horns. one of the first projects i worked with paul on was the midbass horn and woofer horn of the kp-600. i know that some people ***** about the way i answer a question with a question (deano?) but that is how paul taught me. it was quite cool and frustrating working with him. but i am sure glad he pushed. paul fingerprints are all over the 600. the network that crosses over from the mids to highs was basically pauls idea. at the time i came to work for klipsch, paul was constantly playing with networks. he was really intrigued by steep slope networks. m derived. the manifold to put two 2" diap drivers together was totally designed by him. i asked him if he would design and of course, he was holding class and i never realized it. that manifold worked perfectly and provided addition up to the freq i asked. it was in these details....this projects within projects......macro details today..........and nuances tomorrow....these nuances that paul would later remind ,me that i just needed, to concentrate on the 20%......

  4. Snowy morning in Denver metro and not too bad. Pretty serious stuff to the east and south of us though, with some stretches of I-70 and I-25 closed. The Weather Witches are ecstatic, of course. None of this is shocking in Colorado (we have permanently intstalled barrier gates on all interstates which can be closed whenever needed). The local media likes to forget this. Think Baxter and I will kick back today for a while. Should be fine later in the day. Cheers to all.

  5. Evening gang A few of the Bay goodies are arriving daily, i never know what project i can do just a little more on. New Recording module came in for Mr Gopher, the $3.00 one was a POS, this new one was $9.00, The difference between sound quality modules is from radioshack to Macintosh. $9 bucks is cheap too, catching up to micro electronics is one thing, keeping up is another. I tapered off board level electronics 20+ years ago, just when i saw where they were going, SMT. SMT or surface mount technolgy is the wave of the future, also referd to as "Throw away". Resistors/Capacitor/Coils/Pots used to have leads sticking out of them and they were soldered to the board, These days they are the size of a match head and getting smaller every year. Open up anything you have bought in the last 10 years, if there is a circuit, SMT rules that device. Note: if you take you'r TV into the shop for repair, they will likely say $400 to $800+ for the fix. What they do is replace the entire module, be it power supply, audio or whatever, everything is moduled. By Design, it's cheaper to buy a new one. throw out the old. Techs these days do not do much "Board Level" work, there is to much fast money to be made. Next time one of you'r electronic devices takes a chit, open that bad boy up, see where the world is going.

  6. Good Monday evening gang Just back in from the farm, Dam, forgot what traffice was like. Arriving at the farm this morning, they had breakfast waiting, also one guy bought a Drone. Two hours it took me to put this thing together, i think he paid around $600, keep in mind folks, when it comes to Drones, the more you spend the better. Did not fly it due to batt needing charged. Another farmer bought a cheaper one, assy in 20Min, charged in 20Min, he took off and it went out of sight. up to the time of my leaving (Barn/Shop Air work all day) they still have not found the Drone Back out to finish Air in the morning and some drinkin/shooting.

  10. You've said this many times, on the forum and in person. Perhaps a brief class on some of 50,000 ft views of that 20% might help to increase the class size a bit. When I go over to places like diyAudio, I see everyone doing everything imaginable, well over 90% of which is poorly thought out that is based on the 80% that everyone seems to think is important, but really isn't, and completely discounting the 20% that does matter. When I mention this on a forum, I get extremely nasty and cliquish responses instead of dialogues on why I said what I said, almost as if I was revealing unmentionable family secrets that elicits a particularly nasty or vengeful response instead of a rational one. What's become clear to me is that these people really, really don't know what is important and what isn't. Their requirements are really screwed up, they really never get it right, and they keep drifting in their audio journeys, never becoming satisfied with their purchases and projects, but nevertheless believing that the next project or purchase will give them satisfaction - without stopping to think about their firmly held beliefs about loudspeakers and audio. I liken this to not being brought up in a community or faith where you're exposed to certain truths and insights while you're still young and forming your opinions, whereby you can accept the culture and the overall message that makes the really deep insights possible and ultimately successful. It's the things that are thought to be right requirements but that aren't, that are the source of all the trouble. Perhaps small doses of classes in the form of short articles (i.e., not on the forum but on the blog pages by Klipsch employees) that can be easily accessed by those visiting the Klipsch web site can find - like your mumps video, etc. is that way to communicate. It might also help to avoid those behaving idiotically, believing that they know more than you on the subject of audio, i.e., extreme insulting behavior. I see that kind of thing a lot, everywhere. I know that I've learned a great deal from you and Paul (via you). I value that wisdom...that makes all the difference in the world. Chris

  19. No one told me that Klipsch means " speaker buying sickness" lol. Just got a pair of KLF 20's, black, all stock. They will be part of my 2 channel Master Bedroom system, but I want to a/b them with my Chorus 2's in the Living room before lugging them upstairs. So, I now own Heresy 1's, Chorus 2's and KLF 20's, that should do it..... Until the next time I get an offer I can't refuse, I got these in trade for some audio gear that I never use, and actually forgot I had.

  20. This should be a great campfire discussion in Hope after a couple of drinks. It will be interesting to hear those opinions in person, instead of behind a screen and keyboard. Just had to delete my personal diatribe on the subject as I will save it for a latter date. I trust that all of you mentally challenged, as well as those that are mentally gifted, or so as proclaimed, will have a wonderful evening.

  21. For some vague reason, that reminds me of an interesting but effective quirk of the engineer, audiophile, and businessman that in my experience never appeared to succumb to arguments of relevance (argumentum ad populum) for the sake of social acceptance: Where would we all be without his still relevant contributions? I think a lot less further along than we are today. That's something to aspire to: no BS in audio. RIP Paul, you're still remembered fondly. Chris

  24. A visit with Joey B., As some of you might know, a couple of weekends ago, I delivered my pair of KP-450s to a buyer in Main with my daughter along for the trip to help drive. While I could have freight shipped these speakers for $350, the buyer said he would pay me $1,000 extra to deliver them, so off in the wife's mini van we went. After delivering the speakers to Maine, I wanted to Drop in and visit with Joey B. in Mass., so I gave him a call. Joey has been very helpful to me in the past with providing me with info, and selling me some stuff for my KP-600 stacks and I have him on speed dial and have called him multiple times since acquiring my first set of KP-600 stacks. For those of you who may not know, Joeys claim to fame as far as all things Klipsch is that he was doing Pro Sound with MCM-1900s even prior to Roy coming to Klipsch, so he has been at this for a LOOONG time. As far as I am aware, there were originally only 4 major KP-600 setups ever bought; 1) The 32 box system that was flown in the New Orleans Convention Center, original install price of $160,000 that Kevin Harmon, Roy Delgado, and myself bought the remaining 30 boxes as two had been pilfered at some point., 2) the 10 stack, or 30 Box setup of Dave Phipps out of Texas, which is where Kevin Harmon, Bill Hendrix, and myself bought our first sets of KP-600s, Bob McTiery from Florida of Ram Sound fame who had and ran 8 stacks or 24 Boxes and has since sold his stacks, and Joey B. from Mass. who switched from the MCM-1900s to the KP-600s after they came out. Joey has and still uses 8 stacks or 24 boxes and has done sound for venues of 15,000 people with these same 8 stacks. So I contacted Joey with out really any advance notice, and he was kind enough to make time out of his busy schedule to host myself and my daughter at his home. I will add that like most self made successful men that Joey has his arms in several ventures and it was very kind of him to make time on such short notice. I will start with the fact that he and his wife have a very nice home that they have put a lot of thought into their own personal touches. I will not address his home ant further as while he gave my daughter and myself an extensive tour, I don't feel comfortable discussing the layout to an open forum other than to say it is very nice and well thought out, and that my daughter was very impressed with your upstairs lighting fixtures and molding choice Joey I found out on my visit that Joey is also a drummer and I will send you pictures Kevin Harmon after Joey sends them to me. Joey also has a love of American Muscle cars and has a rare 1970 1/2 Falcon with 429 Cobra Jet that was only offered 1/2 year before being rebadged as the Torino, and I would add that the engine is not just a stock 429 Cobra jet and is VERY stout and healthy. I was also fortunate enough to be treated to some photos of some gigs that Joey has done with the KP-600s with pictures of different configurations he has rigged. All in all, I would have enjoyed staying longer and getting to meet Joeys family, but my daughter Kimberly had already missed a day of school as it was a Monday, and had to get home to have a homework assignment in by midnight on the computer! Had a lot of fun visiting with Joey, and he reminds me a lot of a close friend that I recently lost to lung cancer in the past two years. Joey also went out of his way to make my daughter welcomed in his home. Joey, I look forward to talking to you again soon, and if welcomed I would at some point be willing to make the long trip to spend time with you again at some point in the future Roger

My work space is double desks and one of them always has a project on it. All my componet storage is behind me at eye level, pulling open one of my little plastic drawers last year, snagged on something stressing the dated plastic and exploded, so from now on "Eye Level" eats up space but worth it. I also have full complement of hotair solder/desolder but just don't use it. I play with "Modules", quailty, cheap and most are SMT/through hole. I will post a link of one of my Fav kinky suppliers, and this only one. http://www.lctech-inc.com/Hardware/

  30. Wow... lot of promotion going on at that site! Sounds like a sales pitch. Even so, their numbers mentioned are less than 15 bucks. If raising the minimum wage to 15 is good then why not $20? ...or $30? or 50??!! Think how fantastic that would be? Think of ALL the money that would be pumped back into the economy?! Sarcasm aside... I am afraid that the end result is not going to be as great as folks hope.

  33. Just like I said before---Henry Ford took a lot of flack for raising the hourly wage to 5 dollars per hour at his company so they could afford to purchase $850.00 cars. All of the supposed experts said this was stupid but it turned out to be a fantastic move. Then in the 60's the unions got the wages going upward and we had the American middle class supporting the entire planet. The experts were wrong again. JJK

  48. Last I looked, she still looks pretty cute while wearing pants. I on the other hand, have considered wearing a belt with my braces (suspenders) since I'm still down about 30 pounds and most of my pants look a bit like billowing clown pants. I'm afraid if I point out who wears the pants, she'd get the last laugh. Oh, here's one for you. She came home one night. Said she bought me a new pair of pants or two to try on. (she wanted something that looked more fitted to me than the billowing clown pants) Tried pair A & B on... fit me nicely. She then said "here, try these on" Backstory: I once made a joke that I had lost enough weight where I could probably fit into her pants. Update: I tried the third pair on....a pair of jeans. As they were about my knees going up...I stopped. I looked at her and said "these are YOURS, aren't they?" She said try them. Pulled them up, they fit and looked mighty fine. She admitted they were indeed hers and now we had proof that I was able to wear her pants. Maybe I could wrestle her for the rights to who wears her pants in the house? (I was team captain in high school) Richard Tongue wrestle her, you can't lose either way Mark
