  1. Received another speaker from Klipsch today, a 1502, that I needed to complete my Jubilees. I had already started to open it before I remembered to take some pictures. The shipper R&L Trucking was awesome and put it in my carport. After the packaging was removed and I walked around it and that smile formed which has not gone away yet. The music room remains a mess but most of it is back together. I have reconfigured the Xilica as per @Chief bonehead and am working on gain structure. My first impression is Wow there is music in that bottom octave and it is good. Some of the bass is very nuanced and some is punchy fast while being very clean and having correct tone. I'm using a Crown amp rated at 1500 watts at 4 Ohms bridged. I agree with @dtel that the china cabinet needs to be watched as I have already been reprimanded by my wife. Works like that vibrating football game we had as kids. The first music played was Gotthard's Domino Effect CD. I want to thank @MetropolisLakeOutfitters for putting up with me asking for one of these every couple of weeks and then actually getting one for me. I recommend them highly.

  3. Thanks again Jim for taking time to check the Khorns out for me, I am so grateful. Also inviting us into your house to hear your system, WOW! Still trying to get the grin off my face (even after the long trip home) and a couple hours of sleep. After this trip of hearing 2 systems with the Khorns, my friend Jim may also be getting caught by the bug as he talked about McIntosh and Klipsch the whole way home, even checking some prices🙂. Anyway thanks to you and Briney both to make this deal come together. I would do it again in a heartbeat. Thanks Klipsch Community

  7. Yeah, mixed bag. Comment on neither, either or both... So, a good friend made through my Regional Music Heritage Center work brought me some things to digitize. Among them was this disc. I was amazed. I knew that PWK did LOTs of experimental recording but never knew he engineered records. My friend's name is Jimmie Allen, and he played with the Rule Beasley Quintet back in the 50s. 88 now, and still working both at his job as well as at jazz. Rule Beasley is a noted American composer from Texarkana now living on the west coast. His son, John, is a jazz orchestra leader and produced President Obama's last National Jazz Day program. There's a bunch more connections to these guys including Elvis Presley...but that's TMI and this is about PWK. Jimmie says this was direct mastered. While I know his memory is really good, I am not sure as I have this on reel to reel in stereo, made by PWK in 1956. However, I wasn't there and this is, while mono, a DELICIOUS disc that is basically in flawless condition and noise free. Best disk of this vintage I've ever heard. At minimum, as the hand appears to be that of PWK, I believe he mastered it from the tape at the Dallas facility referenced. The title "Ode to a Catfish" was a nameless Rule Beasley piece. Jim Hunter says that when PWK asked the name for the recording, Rule said it had no name and PWK promptly dubbed it "Ode to a Catfish." If interested, I'll record and post here. The other topic is chili. Gotten back to further work on my chili cooking, which we Texans pursue all our lives. Of course, many know I was born in Texarkana and raised on the Arkansas side. But if you have heard the world's first 45 rpm release by Eddy Arnold called "Texarkana Baby" you will be aware of those like me who claim dual citizenship and loyalty. Love'em both! Mom is from pure Hillbilly stock and my dad was a west Texas cowboy who rode fence and toted a .45. Don't get much more dual than that. Anyway, my dad carried chili powder, canned tomatoes, dry beans, onions, garlic and bacon for the days he spent riding fence in the trackless southwest. He carried a Winchester as well and would use it to shoot a deer on occasion for a break from beans. So, that meant chili. Learned the basics from him. Meat, chili, salt, onions, garlic, tomatoes sometimes...sometimes not. I've been all over the place over the years but getting back to the basics now. This pot was made from Bolner's dried cascavel arbol chili. This I stewed separately after removing the stems and dumping the seeds. Once cooked down, I pulverized them to paste in a blender then separated the bits of skin and seed remaining in the centrifugal juicer. That thing is amazing! Made in America to last a lifetime, I bought it used many years ago. I have a lot fine vintage appliances as you can't get stuff of that quality any more. Note the GraLab 168 behind it. Had it 45 years and you can hear it at a 100 feet. Anyway, the juicer is very heavy and spins up to probably 3,000rpm. You do NOT want one of these unless assembled properly balanced! Had this happen a couple of times and was BARELY able to hold it in place until it spun down (takes a while). Anyway, it gets the last bit of goodness from the chilis as I pour some hot water from the pot through as it spins. The yeild is beautiful sauce about the consistency of tomato sauce. I use about .5 measure of arbols (they are pretty hot) to 1 of cascavel (mild and flavorful). This batch had one 8 oz can of tomato sauce and a 10 oz can of Hatch chopped tomatoes and green chilis in it. Beyond that, cumin, smoked paprika, garlic, onion, masa, and chili meat (I often cut my own, but this came from WalMart who makes a pretty good grind). Cooked the basic last night and left outside to "tighten" and for the grease to rise and solidify. Removed the grease today and brought back to a simmer and added four tablespoons of masa that both thickens and provides that great bit of corn flavor that distinguishes a great chili, IMHO. Of course, many opinions on chili...but I only pay attention to mine! Oh...I often cook beans as it doesn't insult me if someone wants them. I want folks to be happy. Friend is coming over this evening and we'll be having this with hot corn tortillas, chilled Kosher dill spears, and beer. Doesn't get much better in January than that! Well, to tie these topics together, it would be even better if PWK were joining us this evening. First image is the PWK disk, second the vintage centrifugal juicer, third the chili last night before setting out to "tighten," the last as it heats after completion today. Dave

  8. Just wanted to say if anyone has been looking at LED floodlights I tried one from Ebay and it works great. It replaced a 500w Quartz which died, and it looks like it puts out the same amount of light as the old 500w or more but it is 100w and waterproof. The new light is whiter and seems to cover a wider area, they were $50 for 3 separate lights each one had a plug on it, just cut it off if direct wiring is needed. Just put one up today and tried it after it got dark, it does better than I expected, how long it will last I have no idea ? I looked at many different lights and the price really varies alot so I thought I would post this since these were on the lower end of what they cost. No street lights here and completely dark so this is from one light. https://www.ebay.com/itm/3x-100W-LED-Flood-Light-With-US-PLUG-Cool-White-Outdoor-Spotlight-Garden-Lamp/323484777846?epid=11018437040&hash=item4b5131fd76:g:5jYAAOSwjXBbt~oq A pic of the brightness and color, an Ipad was used so not a great pic. It is mounted about 14' up on the house and the cars are about 20' away.

The Khorns sound very nice, Decware Rachel, CJ pv10 pre, and Thorens TD160 super. Eva has never been so sublime. The room The Music Cincy

I just remember a kid my age from Detroit who could play the guitar heading South ta get a FEEL for things. Then winding up in LA reaching for the stars yet never pushing anyone. Yea, the gaggle loved ya man! :)

  14. We've been through this here before, but most classical music is recorded and tweaked/edited/spliced. Most engineers use multiple mics, close placement. Most tracks are made from multiple takes, unless it is a live recording. You aren't getting a recording that has microphone placement to get you mid hall. Just like all stereo playback, it is an illusion. The only one I know who could do that, has done that is @Mallette Dave Mallette, who has a special rig to use only four microphones. It isn't an old school quad recording, though. The problem has been how to inexpensively play back a four channel track.

  17. I will say this, regardless of which you go with they are going to be tremendous improvement in that room over the L100. My biggest reccomendation would be to upgrade to Klipschorns or Jubilees as soon as you can. You have a room that will just LOVE Khorns!

  24. @willland thanks for the explanation, i can see where he's coming from too. the point i was making though is that adding 2 subs to chorus2 or most other full range speakers almost always adds to & improves the overall bass capability, thats why so many people add sub(s) to their system... if the main speakers alone produced better/more bass than a decent quality sub.. there would be no need for subs! i fully understand & agree that bigger is better & 2 15" subs would be better than 2 12's, but unfortunately i am space & budget limited so i need to stay within reason here, yes i could buy/build a huge horn sub or dual 15" monstrosity subs, but at this point thats just not practical for my needs. thanks again for the input so far, but im only looking for opinions on the comparison of the 2 subs mentioned to help decide if i want 1 big pb13 ultra because theres a good local deal or hold out for dual sb2000s, but from the reading i've done & what SVS says about 2 subs vs 1, i think im set on dual sb2000s for the price of the 1 ultra... for now, can always sell them & upgrade down the road!

  26. That is an interesting look at one of YES best @Full Range. Not useless verbiage, as an obvious musician he makes sense there. Only took in the first couple of minutes but I intend to hear it out later. That RdB Police record has got to go back, seller won't take off as much as I want to justify keeping it. First time I've thought about doing this buying at discogs. I've got the others I consider necessary from them. One is a 180 NM-M Outlandos d'Amour played less that 5 or 6 times since I got it last year. Zenyatta Mondatta "Back to Black" version 180 NM-M. Those 180s are "audiophile grade vinyl" Ghost in the & Synch G to VG condition originals some audible noise but not bad... I have still put them under my new cart!! Put this out here to see if any of you would want these for a better price than what I paid for the two 180s in the past year. pm me if...

  33. Hey, by coincidence, somebody left a KP-600 system outside the Museum Steam Generating Plant Museum building out at the airport with a note that said: "We just don't have the room for these darlings any longer and we heard you will give them a good home where they will be loved and appreciated. They love to be flown and played loud." They were brought inside out of the cold and rain. They will indeed get a great home!

  38. Winter Storm Gia forecast: Monster snowstorm to span half the US A powerful winter storm, which is being dubbed "Winter Storm Gia" by The Weather Channel, is expected to wallop parts of the U.S. this weekend with snow and ice. Snow is expected to travel along a narrow 1,500-mile-long path that stretches from the Midwest to the East Coast — impacting millions of people. Northern Missouri and central Illinois will be hit the hardest, potentially seeing more than 8 inches of snow by Sunday, the National Weather Service (NWS) reported Friday morning. The Colorado Rockies and northern Mexico should also anticipate heavy snow, the organization warned. "In much of swath from Missouri to southern Ohio, this will heavy and wet and a strain to shovel," AccuWeather meteorologist Bill Deger said in a blog post. "The snow will be wet and clinging in nature. Weak tree limbs may give way under the weight of the snow and lead to sporadic power outages." WHAT IS A POLAR VORTEX? A LOOK AT WHAT COULD BE IN THE FORECAST THIS WINTER More than 40 million people are currently under winter storm alerts, according to meteorologist Kelly Cass Winter. Major cities such as Indianapolis, Cincinnati and St. Louis have been told to prepare for "significant snowfall" — at least 7 inches in some neighborhoods. It will be the first big winter storm of the season for many cities. St. Louis, in particular, could see the biggest snowfall in five years, NWS meteorologist Kevin Deitsch told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, as the city prepares for up to 9 inches. The heaviest snowfall is slated to arrive overnight Friday for the city.
