  3. L100s certainly wouldn't be my choice to compete with horn loaded klipsch. Very different animals there. I doubt those would be for me either. The JBL "hifI" models are quite expensive (even with a decent discount over MSRP) which is why I stuck with the uglier, larger, much better value cinema line. For example : https://www.musicdirect.com/speakers/JBL-4349-Bookshelf-Speakers Value for the money? Not for me. Id much rather have Cornwall IVs for less money.

  5. I'm hesitant about subjective impressions of stuff because humans are all over the map on this kind of thing depending on background and disposition. On the latter I'm all about Galileo's scientific method - but I also fell in love with Dave Brubeck's Take Five album when my Dad played the record on our living room entertainment system in 1963 when I was four. It stunned me and though my career was mostly in finance, science and teaching - Brubeck haunted me. So just after the year 2k I decided that I had enough loot to do something stupid, so I started a concert production company from scratch with the goal to provide the highest possible sound quality even if I lost money in the process. Unfortunately it succeeded and I kept at it until a couple of years ago. I'd achieved what I wanted - a clientele that would pay for my very best effort. The icing on the cake was the oldest and most talented of Dave Brubeck's kids, Chris, used me when he did stuff in the area I covered. Yes I'm bragging. Chris writes symphonies that are usually thematic, such as an Ansel Adams piece with full orchestra and a huge screen fading in and out of different pictures of that amazing black and white photographer while the music did interpretations. It was breathtaking. Other events were more like his Dad's stuff, but still orchestra was involved - jazz band in the middle of the pit that I'd shield with plexiglass and absorbers that had to stay low so everyone could see the muso's - yet it had to work. So Chris Brubeck and I would sit at a center location a few rows back from the stage and mix the event. I had an iPad that was connected to my CL5 (Yamaha) console that allowed me as much control as I wanted for up to 64 channels. And Chris would say something like "a bit more from the winds", or more often "timpani! more!" and I'd do that and he'd smile to the moon. That four year old inside me actually pulled it off. : ) Now what to do? Home audio. Yet I'm still hesitant and my answer may not be very helpful: Amps I have and am familiar with are McIntosh MC275 CE (restored with the best stuff I could find, noise is lower, power higher than specs), Mark Levinson 532H, Benchmark AHB2, and a bunch of professional stuff left over from the business, the only one that sounds really good is a German Camco Vortex 6, second best was the Yamaha TXn series, then all the class D stuff that I've yet to find acceptable from anyone for any other purpose than subs. Well designed solid state rules. You can hear the reverb of the room in good recordings, subtle stuff is all there IF the loudspeakers are up to the task. Tubes are lovely - I could live with them alone quite happily, but they just don't have the "straight wire with gain" thing going on. My hat's off to all you guys that match all this stuff together to get the most euphoric result, but I'm about the math - I want the modifications (technically called distortion) removed to the greatest extent possible. But I'm human. I cry during Stravinsky's Rite of Spring or Shostakovich's 5th Symphony or Holst's Planets or Yes's Fragile or anything Emerson Lake & Palmer. So the AHB2 is right down my alley but way too small in output for my needs (thus the 532H) until NOW. NOW is a pair of '74 Klipschorns I drove to South FL to purchase and have restored. The bass is equal to concert sound - even close to the drum kit - it's all there. It scared me the first time I heard them. So good I turn it up louder than live - still crystal clear - all with the tiny AHB2. It loafs - doesn't even get warm. I'm going through my 3rd iteration at the moment on the KH tops. Aiming at a two-way system, but I'm not religious about it - thus tomorrow a pair of B&C DCX464's are arriving with those giant horns they designed for them. The funny thing is I already found a solution that brings 99% of the holographic female voice into my living room that my redesigned Martin Logan '83 CLS electrostatics do - and this solution is a... For another post. : ) God bless you and your precious family - Langston

  6. I know there's someone on here keeping track of Klipsch sales prices. I posted locally and was intending to post on here but they sold before I had a chance, anyway they were rf5 sold for $500, with not an ounce of haggling. I'm not on here very often but this is a fantastic group.

  7. A few years ago, Dennis (djk) posted the patent info for Deoxit. I didn't save it, but it actually had some science behind what they claim. Whatever is left after the solvent is gone, molecularly makes the two mating pieces conduct better. Probably not the way they said it. At least Deoxit doesn't cost $600 a bottle. It really is good stuff.

  9. A few years ago I rented a Dodge Caravan to make an 8 hour round trip to pick up Khorns. Sure it cost me some $$$ to rent the van. But let's look at it this way. You've already said you are having a difficult time finding heritage speakers in your area. A month from now when you are sitting back enjoying your lascalas, are you going to still be sweating that hundred bucks? OTOH, a month from now when those lascalas are in someone else's listening room and you are wishing you had bought them, that hundred dollars won't seem so significant. Just MHO..... Shakey

  10. My thoughts? Ha! Know your budget, become a frequent member in here spending time LEARNING and enjoying the banter while watching the "garage sale" section. You want to know what something sounds like? This is the place. You want something that cranks the tunes? Keep your eyes open here. Most here shoot totally straight and they're great guys who'll help you in a heart beat. Questions? Just ask openly or if your confused send someone a pvt msg w/your question. Once I mentioned I needed a lil pair of rubber gaskets to seal my LS driver to the horn. Sure I could get them but one of the guys stepped up and mailed me two extras he had. Who wants to buy 10 for $10 when ya only need 2? Newbies don't forget those guys and that's what makes this place work. Buy a membership and support the Museum in Hope. Many do but it's not a requirement. You want to expand yourself this is the place to do it. We don't bite too hard it's just that first bite when you're building your system. Then a second bite as you slide deeper into the rabbit hole. hahaha It's on you now! Just my $.02..

  11. Score a pair of Heresy 1s or 2s at market price, see if you like the voicing of the heritage line. Obviously all of us do......... If you like screaming rock, the Fort 2s are unbeatable, total sleepers Cornwalls sound a little better with more bass LaScalas still better esp in the midrange voice K-horns more bass, but very finnicky in placement and room etc Personally, I would score the B-more LaScalas if you can strike a deal others who purchased them in the past with limited spouse approval came back a few months later with the wife's new position. "the LaScalas are leaving over my dead body" Turns out wifey had the LaScalas rocking all day every day while they were at work. Score a pair of smoked glass tops with rounded edges and corners, no plants allowed on top If you have a friend with a van, take plenty of clean tarps, blankets, pillows and chair cushions so you don't trash the veneers Pull the trigger on the LaScalas, you will never look back ........

  15. I don't know what route you want to go exactly, but in my experience, you can get great sound through better speakers and decent amplication than the other way around. At 2k, you can get b stock heresy Iv from a certain vendor brand new with warranty.... If you decide to be open to pro gear, some larger speakers can be had for that money. Cornscalas from Crites are another option. Rf7 I and II come in around that range used also. Jbl cinema 3722 are tremendous value. The list goes on.

  16. If you are thinking of a 2100 or 250, then actually some tube stuff is NOT way out of your budget. A nicely restored Fisher 400 or 500C or a Scott LK-72 would be right in line. They are all great units and well worth searching for. As others have asked, your location would be helpful, and your budget would be good to know.

  17. I cannot thank you enough for your thoughtful post. I will take a sentimental journey over mindless hyperbole any day- with a cliffhanger thrown in at the end no less. I share your adoration of Brubeck- Concord on a Summer Night is a go to mind trip for me. It seems we are on somewhat the same approach and I was thrilled to see you mention that the Bench Mark is a good match with Khorns. I have a pair of '79 Ramblin' Rose that I've also bastardized in my own fashion- Volti horns with the BMS 4592nd and Fostex t500a MK3 tweeters. I have done the tube amp shuffle and agree wholeheartedly that while they have their charm, a system based on efficiency and uber low distortion should not be wrapped in a wool rug so while I started to cast eyes at the various Pass designs, I came across the Benchmark and can't seem to get it out of my mind. Of course the wife agrees that I'm indeed out of my mind, but that is a different matter entirely. I look forward to seeing what you've come up with. My best to you and yours as well!

  18. He was doing recording when he was younger, learning, always learning. He had made a 4 channel recording system, that worked spectacularly well for live events, using his own recorder, the MBS4. (Did you know you can record a 4 channel wav file?) The MBS was for Mallette Bicycle Shop, as I recall, what his father had. I think Ron (Lonelobo) could probably fill you in on more of his background. Travis could also tell you about work he did (or didn't do) on helping out with PWK's audio recordings.

  19. I didn't know that need was to be considered. I have been fortunate in that there is no such thing as too loud while I am jamming inside. The neighbors would be able to hear the LaScalas played outside, but the neighbors can go inside. They can enjoy it or be pithed, there choice.

  20. I've had a Summit S 670 (propane)since spring of 2012. It's sat outside with only the Weber cover for protection (I'm on the 3rd one). It's about 15' from a saltwater pool. I have only needed a couple of burners but Weber sent them for free. I was skeptical that Weber would be a little "K-Martish" but it has exceeded my expectations.

  21. World record? They can plop a C-130 on a moving carrier without a hook. Someone needs to go back to misinforming people about crossovers and the value of LaScalas.

  22. Atta boy! I've got so much stuff to hang in here right now I honestly don't know where I'd put it if I had it. Great rendition though imo. Getting closer to hanging stuff in here. Place is gonna be a museum when I'm done. I've got stacks of stuff leaning in here while i try to make up my mind what I'm gonna hang. THEN I make the mistake of going to the stash in the closet and changing my mind. Think I'll just rotate stuff on the walls. Too many memories and just way too much stuff. Just an old rock hoarder. 😂

  24. I’m new to the forum! I’m helping my parents downsize to a smaller place and Dad is ready to part with the Klipschorns he bought in the late 70s - he recalled it was 1978. I don’t know much about vintage speakers, but I’m happy to provide pics and look for any identifying info on the units. The speakers are in Shreveport, LA. I’m still researching pricing, but we’re taking offers. Thanks! UPDATE 26 April 2024: The Klipschorn Hive Mind has spoken and says that they are from 1980. The speakers are still available and still in Shreveport, LA. I still don't know how to price them, so feel free to make your case if you would like to make an offer. My music producer friend in Austin said he would expect them to go for $16k - note that he's not asking to buy them, but has generously offered to store them at his house if needed. 🤣 I'm trying to do some research on pricing, but finding it difficult. 27. Hello all - looking for a little help/guidance. Im still relatively new to the 2 channel home audio world and have been trying to do my due diligence over the past year in researching all that I can. I currently have a pair of KG3's and a small tube amp (Musical Paradise MP301). I seem to be having terrible luck finding a set of any Heresy's, Cornwall's, or La Scala's. Its almost like no one wants to be bothered with basic questions, they play games, or they don't want money in general. I have almost given up for now on speakers and begun looking at amps. Specifically the SS McIntosh MC2100 or 250. The tube stuff is WAY out of my budget. I figured, maybe a new amp would make my current speakers a little better. Which is what brought me to the question - what to upgrade first? Should I hold out for the speakers, or take a chance, pick up an amp, and hope for the best with the KG3's for the time being? Any help you guys can provide is greatly appreciated.

  29. @Dtbsf @FalconXXXX The obvious "meet in the middle spot" to my mind would be to catch each other in Reno or Lake Tahoe. BTW @FalconXXXX, those are some beautiful speakers. Both sets. I am a bit jealous!

  30. Maybe its the horn that is throwing me off? I measured the other day for the La Scala dimensions, I may have to move my "retro" gaming setup which is in the corner along the Stereo wall. If I moved the Games I could fit Khorns in both corners.

  33. KG series seems to be very responsive to upgrades in the crossover and maybe the horn driver diaphragm. Bang-for-the-buck, my choice would be to put $200 into the speakers you have, and drop the rest of your budget on sources and amplifiers. But that's me injecting my math into your equation. 😉

  35. Im in Maryland. I had spoken with the lady who "was" selling multiple sets of speakers, I'd rather not get into that conversation out in the public forum, I can always message privately if anyone is interested in that story. And I was thinking of the La Scala's out in Baltimore but im not sure if I will be able to transport them so far unless I rent a vehicle which ends up being more than $100 at that point tacked onto my price tag. I have looked at the 400, the ones I have come across are damaged/over priced or get sold immediately if they are worthwhile. It seems like you really have to be FAST in this hobby. Once someone posts something its almost pending before they submit the sale ad.

  36. A better amp will certainly make your speakers sound better, no doubt about that. But with KG3s you will quickly "run out of speaker" as you climb the amp ladder. That said, 6.5 watts isn't a lot of power for 94 db sensitive speakers. Normally I would say upgrade the speakers first. But you may not be getting all the performance of the KG3s with that amp. So yes, buy a better amp. But do this keeping in mind what your next speakers might be so you don't have to do it again. BTW, post your location. Sometimes forum members run across deals local to you that you might be overlooking. Shakey

  38. the Ferrofluid helps to cool the assembly , i doubt it changes the sound as such , that tiny bit up front will ease after the break-in of the diaphragm , give it time , they will settle in --

  45. you could buy your forever amplifier and actually save money and enjoy more for longer. Buy a Benchmark AHB2 amplifier. It is the most low noise amplifier in the world and it also sounds amazing. On the weekend I took one of mine over to a buddy who has a pair of Kef Blades running on the big Pass Mono blocks 50 watts class A 600 watts class AB into 2 ohms. After just three hours he decided to buy an AHB2 and sell the Pass Mono Blocks. Its my forever amplifier.
