  5. I'm using a FirstWatt J2 to drive the two mid channels and have 2 NCORE Hypex mono blocks, one channel per driver, for the Pure Audio Project proprietary 15" bass speakers. I have no idea about efficiency. I'm sure that can be looked up on-line. They get plenty loud. Pretty safe bet most speakers/rooms would benefit from a properly set up sub or two. Ported, bass reflex, horn-loaded included. All the generalized talk about : or you get into the Blose reflected sound "stuff", stealing focus. or @the real Duke Spinner The Music was not kix d on that kind of Speaker - Decoder ring needed for most of his/her posts (typical) I'd be willing to bet they have never heard a pair of Pure Audio Project speakers (Kudos for you @CWelsh for giving them a go at AXPONA 2023). Lumping all Open Baffle speakers into the same bin or ones you heard 25 years ago or slapping a couple of spare drivers on a plywood board and calling it a day is about as closeminded as you can get. Are the white van box speakers from the 70s/80s the same as a Heresy? Remember all the cupped hand over your mouth, megaphone, honking comments from Klipsch bashers 20+ years ago? Same thing....different day.

  10. About the speaker cables, I used Kimber 8TC for over 20 years and never thought about it again. For a year now, our daughter and her husband have had a nice little stereo system, a Bluesound Power Node together with Stirling Broadcast LS3/5a speakers that fit perfectly acoustically into their smaller living room (I also have such Stirling speakers in addition to my Klipsch speakers and I like them very much for what they are). Then there was the question of the speaker cable. Having been out of the market for 20 years, I rummaged through some hifi forums. I noticed that cables from very professional studio equipment companies were mentioned very positively more often. So I took it sporty and built Japanese Canare 4S11 Star Quad cables (not as bi-wiring item, but two wires each for plus and minus together) as bulk cables at 6.50€ per running meter. I used Deltron banana plugs for €1.15 each. In the end I was very surprised that I liked it even better than the Kimber 8TC (nowadays 140€! a mono meter in my country). Less "hifi", so a bit less spacious but without the slight presence boost of the Kimber, which can be a bit too much with some music) but more musical flow of the Canare. This is a very subjective topic and it is never possible to give a general recommendation or make an "objective" statement. But I can say that with the price difference between the Kimber 8TC and the Canare 4S11, my heart beats for the Canare in any case. For a fair comparison, I even cut off the 20-year-old banana plugs of the Kimber cable (possible oxidation) and replaced them with newly soldered Deltron plugs.

  14. I recently listened to the entire Piece of Mind Album on my Cornwall IVs and found it to be quite good. I use an old Harman Kardon 730 with a WIIM Pro plus. I eq the bass up a little and the mids down a tad. If leaving everything flat it sounds a little thin and mid forward for my taste. I just tried ‘2 Minutes’ and I’d estimate it to be of similar quality. I do encounter some pretty bad recordings but find the Cornwalls are kinder to them than my KLF20s. The Cornwalls are considered to be pretty acurate so if the bass is light in the recording it will be light. If it’s there in the recording the Cornwalls will do it justice. I’m WAY less sophisticated than a lot of folks on here so take this from a layman’s perspective. I found an app called ‘House Curve’ that can measure your set up with your phone mic. I used this and set my Cornwalls up to where I’m plus or minus 3 db from the house curve using my WIIM eq. It didn’t take a lot of eq at all but I had to bump the mid bass up a tad and it has made most of my music sound better than with no eq. The Cornwalls can be hard on some bad recordings but gaining higher transparency will reveal this. I tried some JBL L100 classics and though they were a little easier on bad recordings but the Cornwalls still won easily overall with more instrument separation and more realistic and lively drums and guitars. More transparency will also reveal some warts. If you just keep this in mind and are not afraid to use the eq when needed these speakers are awesome. I listen to everything from classic rock, metal, EDM, rap, 80s pop, grunge, punk…. You get the idea. The Cornwalls play all genres well. The differences are more in the recording quality and all genres have good and bad. Save for maybe jazz where most of them are good to great. lol. I’m just rambling after waking up from a nap but as I listen this week I’ll post a list of what I consider good and bad recordings.

  24. I still own all my Palladium speakers. They were my "endgame" speakers until I heard that the Heritage Jubilee was coming. They are fantastic, just not as good as the Jubes. 🙂 Unfortunately, you are correct that Klipsch isn't making them anymore. The line was discontinued in 2016. So, that mostly means buying used like I did. However, Paducah Home Theater does happen to have two pair of "new old stock" P-38F that were sent to dealers for short demo sessions and then returned and placed in storage. They are selling for half of the original retail price. They also have new old stock P-312W subs as well. However, when purchasing Palladiums today you have to take into consideration the pretty much complete lack of replacement parts. Klipsch no longer has any. I've been watching eBay, etc. and have found some used drivers parted out from speakers with damaged cabinets for "just in case" spares. Definitely worth a listen if you can find a place to hear them though.

  27. I too have an itch for some new cans. Not that I need a new set.... I have the S4's in ear and they are very clear. they do lack a little down low and the sound stage isnt as nice as some of my other full size cans ( I know apples to oranges there). Im hoping the New Image 1's fill in that gap, with a better sound stage a little more seperation and just a touch more bass down low. I plan on going to the Apple store with my own Ipad/iTouch loaded with my own music and trying a set out before I purchase them. The other set of Cans in the running right now are the Denon AHD2000's I have a set of the Denon AHD1000's and while good they just arent exactly what Im looking for in a closed lightweight can. Ultraones Proline 750's I have are by far my best set of Closed cans. But there is a pretty big price gap between those and the Image one, and the 750's really sound good with a Headphone Amp. I'll report back once the Apple store gets them in stock and on display.

  28. Bill - I'm in the Chicago area as well - but my garage is attached so it doesn't get as cold I imagine. I've got a system out there, as well as TV, and a computer and haven't had any problems. I imagine if you're going to be spending anytime out there in extreme weather you'll be running a heater while they're in use anyway. You could always email Klipsch and ask if there is a suggested operating temperature for your speakers, or speakers in general.

  29. Occasionally I've seen ported speakers that have their ports "stuffed" with open cell foam - KEF ships their bookshelf speakers with foam specifically for this purpose. I haven't been able to determine from what I've read - does stuffing the port create more bass, or less? Anyone have any experience with this? Or I guess, what's the point I'm missing?

  30. RTR isn't the most convenient - but the cool factor is off the charts. I've got a Pioneer RT707 and use it regularly Try http://www.protapenw.com/acatalog/Open_reel_audio_tape.html - I've bought some blank from them.

  31. An inexpensive receiver - I'm partial to the Marantz 22XXB series myself - and a set of bookshelf's will blow away your ProMedia set up. Go for a Marantz 2238B and a pair of used Klipsch 2.2's and you'll enjoy the difference without breaking your budget. For speakers a bit larger - floor-standing - KG3.5 are nice sounding and cheap. Connect a computer to it and listen to whatever you like - internet radio (pandora.com) or your iTunes library. Need smaller bookshelf speakers? - the RB10's sound nice in a small environment

  32. Oldmako You said nearly everything I would've if I could have phrased it that well - my main system is a SA9500 II and matching tuner with a pair of Chorus and I love it. I have three 2 channel systems in the house and they're all vintage stuff.

  34. I have used the AE - I wasn't happy with the quality, nor the dropped signal periodically. I'm using a 24" iMac, miniplug to RCA BlueJeans cable to my receiver. I control the whole thing wirelessly through my iPhone with the Remote application mentioned earlier. Works great. Having said that - it's hard to beat the AE for a simple connection in any room of the house wirelessly for average listening, or background music for a party.

  37. Kevin - I did something similar - always wanted a Pioneer RT-707 reel to reel, couldn't afford them as a kid, saw a super clean one on eBay from a recognized seller and BANG - I had to have it. I love the damn thing, wish I woulda bought one sooner. Here's a couple links for tapes - I've used pro northwest. http://www.protapenw.com/acatalog/Open_reel_audio_tape.html http://www.tapestockonline.com/reeltoreel.html Picked up a CTF-1250 cassette as well. The think the old stuff is more "engaging" than the current equipment

  38. I was so looking forward to this one, but as a long time fan, it doesn't hit me the way others did. The time period around the Back in Black album, Thunderstruck, even Stiff Upper lip - were all a little more elemental in their sound, clean, powerful stuff. This one seems to be too "layered" or something. I know I'm not explaining this well, so lets try this - the beginning of back in black. (drums) Bomp, Bada Bamp, Bada Bamp - (guitar) dedoo dedoo dedoo. By contrast this album doesn't seem to have the raunchy garage sound. Worth buying, yes. One of their best, no.

  41. Friend of mine always asks me questions "whats the best" so and so... I always answer Depends on who you are and what you are looking for. I can see how the XF-48 line could be what a lot of people are looking for. I can also see how it's something that some people would not want.To each his own.
