  1. Ok, I've absent for a bit, however, just a couple days ago, I had the idea to try moving some speakers around. And after HURKING these 72 lbs. speakers up a flight of stairs (you ought to try that when you are in your 70ies ), there is a revelation !!! The Forte 4's are a totally different speaker up here in the cozy room, and the B&O Beogram 6500 system luckily and happily is an amazing matchup! Why? I can't say, but the sound is so much warmer, low end that shakes the room and floor like a pair of subwoofers! Here are a some brand new photos from this morning. I have them pulled out from the front wall 2 feet after much testing with a 28Hz. tone test and my DB-C weighted meter. Just like in the large room on the first floor, and other reviewers have found out, these get deeper in the lower range when pulled away from the wall. They are also 8.5 feet center to center and the two love seats are 11 feet from the speakers. I included a photo of the space BEHIND the listening area which is pretty much totally open. Here you go: with and without grills.....

  12. I've been attributing a quote that I like to the wrong guy for a while now. In a thread yesterday expressing skepticism I used "Believe Half of What You See and None of What You Hear". Marvin Gaye, Leon Haywood even Ben Franklin said something similar to the above and Ben might have been the first to use it! Edgar Allen Poe is notable in this list of users of the thought of critical thinking. Lou Reed used it well in his politically charged "New York" release!

  15. It looks like the stock white leads from the woofer run out the back of the cab, and I believe he basically says that in the video. There is nothing in any of the McIntosh equipment he is using that would allow him to set a crossover point to 700Hz to roll off the excess highs from the woofer. I’m pretty sure he’s running the woofers full range out of his home theater receiver. I think it’s a bunch of nonsense. and I say this as somebody that is actively tri-amping their La Scalas.

  16. @babadono don't know if you read the paper romance Peavey. If u live in a standalone home it probably won't apply, but in a building that's fed by a 208 volt transformer, this bears repeating. When we hook up audio equipment in a building that has the 120 volts required, derived from a 208 volt three phase system, we are faced with more than a 60 Hz ground loop, we end up with 60, 120, and 180 Hz ground currents, that get into the audio system. The would normally be installed in the mains panel, but could be put in a separate box in the audio room if you were careful.

  17. Slipped back up to the Beck lp for a lil back story. In 07 Tal had the pleasure of walking out on stage @ EC's Crossroads tour in Chicago to give it a go w/Jeff Beck. Why not? She flat kills the bass line. I've watched her transition since she was young. Sure she was gushy every time she walked out w/him. He's a perfectionist. Always has been. She nailed it @ Crossroads and now this at Ronnie Scotts? I started thinking. Wondering what her thoughts were when he passed. From one pro to a youngin who's worked for every gig? Watch her go and watch his reaction. One of the best ever and a youngin? Crazy watch on her run.

  22. There's that "it measures good but is bad" thing again Yep half tripped breakers, seen it several times in my life as well and not just in audio situations of course. And yes everybody should have one of those outlet checkers.

  23. I have emphysema and Covid knocked the shit outta me for 3-4 days. Then real recovery took months. I was just fatigued all the time. That was January '21. A few months later it got bad again for 2 days but tested negative for flu and Covid. Doctor had no clue.

  24. Usually, but mostly for marketing purposes, version III is better than II is better than I, with anything. But those improvements aren't necessarily radical. I think the "consecutive serial number" business was created because they would share matching veneers. Good for resale but has nothing to do with sound. Get the Is if you want vintage for an all-vintage setup. Whether the cabinets need repairs and if you're capable of the work is up to you. Also, they're the cheapest. If they're the plywood models then they're badazz lookin'! Get the IIs well, just because of the consecutive serial number jazz. I have IIs and they're fine. Get the IIIs because they're the latest and greatest of your choices, you think you'll hear a difference, the peanut gallery won't bug you with REPLACE THE CAPACITORS!, and serial numberage be damned!

  25. I admit to not watching it all. 1. Did he ever show the board he's using to enable/disable HF LF on those speakers? & show what's enabled when he does the playback? 2. Did he show what is inside those Heresy where the wires are going to the crossover addition? 3. Didn't see either of the above & stopped playback. Doesn't pass the test for me & did you read that I KNOW more wattage can improve H, M or L Frequencies? I actually bi-wire my F-3s & have taken a lot of flack here over that "So What!" It means 60w to each woofer, 60w to each HF instead of 80 w per channel ! I believe firmly in one of Lou Reed's songs that has the line in it "Believe half of what you see, None of what you hear" (think that was his friend George) He was a skeptical New Yorker, I just grew more that way over the years!

  26. The bass in his video sounds fat and bloated. More bass =/= an improvement in sound quality. An active crossover can help but whatever this dude is doing ain’t it.

  27. Dumb question: Have you tried a "cheater" plug (temporarily) just to see if lifting ground does anything? Obviously, this is not safe and hopefully you are plugged into a GFI anyhow. Another dumb question: Have you tried shorting the inputs when you power up and have nothing connected on those inputs? April 10, 2024 will be two years I have been waiting on a pair of SE84UFO. I was around number 1250 when I purchased, and now I am around number 400. How stupid.......I will never do anything like that again. I hope I still have the same email and phone number when they finally build those things. I hope I have the same address. I hope I am still alive. 🙂

  29. Its so interesting how many people on this Forum think that only horn loaded subs sound good. My HSU DR sub sounded good but the REL S812 sounds MUCH better to my ears. PLENTY of fast clean and deep bass that blends perfectly with my Forte IVs. Interesting how many people that have never heard a high level connected REL Sub assume that all DR subs suck!!!! LOL

  30. Finally got an appointment with a urologist! I can not conceive of how that should be a hard thing to accomplish! This has been one insanely painful week. With the big stone pinballing back and forth below or in my bladder at least it is bearable now.

  31. Yes, but when expectation bias is part of the horn subwoofer experience then different becomes better. 🙂

  33. After that it was time for some swamp raga! Hey, I was in the T's and couldn't resist pullin it. I even put it back! Nope, still have piles. More work to do! 😂 During breaks in touring in early 2015, the band used Trucks and Tedeschi's home studio in Jacksonville, FL to record the album.[1] Unlike their previous album, Let Me Get By was written fully by the band, with help from Doyle Bramhall II. Trucks produced the album himself, after having co-produced the band's previous albums. Thom Jurek of AllMusic wrote "An obvious studio offering, it's warm and resonant, yet crackling with energy and ideas. The feel is loose and grooving, the performances hot... Never has TTB sounded so organic, relaxed, and free. Let Me Get By is the album this group has been striving for since their formation. You need this."[2] Do ya? Here's the full album ... Buckle up!

  34. Wish there were real urologists here! Did not think to check on that, In FL and NC they go after the issue. I never thought of that as "aggressive". Though that was the way it's done. Day 4 now, this ain't right!! Things change, the tylenol 4 is in me now, it works 8 hours. Ran out of my saved stuff from 2017 and the year after. The Flowmax might have helped already too. I'm comfortable except for the amount of liquids going through

  37. Inductors are used to block AC signals, capacitors block DC signals. Placed in series with the woofer, will roll off the upper end, crossing to the midrange. As the freq. goes up, less will get through a given inductance.

  38. Madman1, I am not the guy to ask as I am just learning myself but what Wirrunna posted looks to be very good information.

  39. Mike, help me overcome my ignorance. What does the inductor on the woofer do to cut off the woofer and why do some crossovers also have a cap and others don’t?
    1 point
  40. In response to some of your queries. None of the crossovers are better than the others....they are slightly different flavours /sounds. Some folks will prefer one over the other, so hard to say which one you will prefer. All of them will work with the LS. FWIW, my preference is for the one that I posted. I thought it had a much smoother integration between the 3 drivers. The purpose of the bypass caps is not to save money by having a 39uf cap instead of a 40uf cap. The bypass caps are 0.01uf, so the main caps remain at 40uf. The idea behind it is to impart some of the flavour of a really expensive cap into the main capacitors. To give you an idea, the 40uf caps cost me $284 Aust dollars each & the Dueland bypass caps cost me $25.75 for each 0.01uf cap. Don't overthink things too much, just have fun experimenting. Cheers.

  41. Yes, that is the same as the kit I built many years ago. I have, in the mean time, made a couple changes... Replaced the 1.3mH inductor with a 2.5mH for the woofer. Replaced the .2mH inductor with a .15mH for the tweeter. The 2.5mH inductor seemed to tighten the bass. The tweeter inductor swap seemed to smooth out the the top end a little. Mike

  42. I have a Klipsch Reference (mixed versions) speaker system with the focal points (IMO) being the RF-7II fronts and the RC-64II center in a 1000 sq ft room and have been using yamaha receivers for years but am looking at the Denon too. The models I am looking at currently for mostly home theater use are Yamaha RX-A3040 Denon AVR-X5200W They both are in my price range and I like the fact they have wireless, 4k pass, and Atmos Which one do you prefer and why? Thanks in advance Dave

  45. Quakana, Not ALL multichannel receivers sound bad for stereo, and you can't say you have listened to them all either. A good sub will ad another whole octave of music you have obviously never heard. Obviously I have never heard? I run subs in 2 different rooms in my house and frankly for the music I listen to I don;t feel i need it with the right speakers and its my choice...don't be disrespectful its not nice..

  46. I am an old guy...and back in the day we didn't have SUB's and the speakers we used provided plenty of Bass. No offense to anyone here but I firmly believe the AV receivers of today are junk for 2 channel audio and that stating a "sub" is the solution is not the best answer and that is just My opinion. I think an old 2 channel amp/preamp is what is needed and that the AV receivers just cant provide really good 2 channel sound while playing music I would also keep in mind that if its Apple AAC files you are playing they are garbage to begin with and garbage in = garbage out You can get a sub and hook it up and IMO it will just mask the fact that if you turn the sub off....the music sounds well....not all that good.....if it starts off sounding not all that good...how can adding a bunch of bass make it sound good? Get the sound "good" first and then if you want yet more Bass...add subs

  47. Just think of it as I have 2 separate AMPS and I want to use a single pair of speakers and switch between what amp I'm using to power the speakers ....kind of the reverse of speaker switching ....sorry for the confusion
