  9. Don't worry Carl, Malabar on the way....had my first cup in months today....as I say to my grand daughters..."Delicioso"!! Sounds to me like you do take care in brewing, which is great, because honestly I think the Malabar is a little "touchy" if you will, meaning, you will want to experiment with the amount, the coarseness of the grind, etc. Personally, I like mine pretty strong, so I use about 2/3 cup of whole beans, grinding them in a burr grinder just before brewing. I use the Chemex pot which is a fancy pour over, but it works great. And only highly filtered water for me, as our local tap water is not the best. I boil the water, take it off, then wait about 90 seconds so as not to burn the grind and over extract. My wife is an accomplished Barista, so I've learned a few tricks along the way over the years. I think after you get it dialed in, you will really like it.

  13. Indian summer here today and yesterday. Ready for the next cool front to come, as it is only March. Been outside with a wood/tree burnfire and keeping eyes on it.Plenty more pine logs to burn. Got a large pine trunk cut with my electric 14 incher off of the fence so I can pull it back up and repair. No, there is only so much I can do my self. Nan will be fortunate if I just keep the grass cut this year. Pay for the rest and the felling of at least 3 rather large and tall pines, within stiking distance of the house. Really should finally get er done before the storm season. Oh well, needed the exercise I guess. Just not the lumberjack I used to be 14 years ago when I relocated back in this neck of woods. Too bad she does not get it yet but, she will, in the end. I did not come to work on Maggie's Farm. Not a farmer...a lover,ha ha ha

  15. Morning gents Everything looks pretty calm going into spring. Was on another forum last night and watched jimmy fallon for a change and Neil Young was on. Pono was Laid out to the public, and the way it was presented sounded like the best "Cleaned up" tracks available. I may just look into this later this week, i know we have a thread or two going on said subject. Looking at the weather, the watercraft project should be done within a week. First cup down going for more. Sat, first 80 day of the year !

I'm in agreement with the original poster, everybody knows what the "F" means in that phrase, and the F-word by definition is offensive, so no surprise that some will be offended....and believe me, if someone uses the word within ear-shot of my wife and I whilst dining out in a restaurant then I would say something.

  25. It seems to be the right time to get a picture of tubes actually glowing back on this thread. Many years ago there was an unusual class of tubes designed for the sweep circuits in tube-type TV sets that have substantially large reserve current capability; hence the name “sweep tubes” was coined. While sweep tubes are no longer made and some versions are getting much harder to find, there are examples that are still quite common. The sweep tubes can put out huge power levels and still have substantial reserve capability. Pete Millet’s Engineer’s amplifier [also known as a “Distortion-cancelling Push-Pull" (“DCPP”) amp], uses these unusual sweep tubes. Several years ago when Pete Millett started to sell PCBs with his DCPP circuit, George of DIY Audio Tubelab fame, decided to test the upper limits for power in relation to these sweep tubes. George used a power supply that would generate 650 volts at 1.7 amps and plugged in his samples of sweep tubes. The amplifier generated 250 WPC in this configuration with a 2,500 ohm load. Not satisfied, he decided to wire both channels in parallel through a common OPT set for 1,250 ohms and lo and behold; this combination generated 504 watts at 5% distortion and 525 watts at clipping. When I get time, I’ll post a few pictures of my Pete Millet DCPP amplifier to the Amp Porn thread. My DCPP amp is nowhere near George’s 504 WPC and only does the 20 WPC that Pete originally designed it for; and at that output, the sweep tubes will probably last a few life-times at that abuse-rate.

  26. Please, "get thee behind me"--I drove from St. Louis to Minneapolis a few months ago for a pair of KLF-10s. Of course, the purchase also included a KLF-C7, and the LF-10 that was recently inquired about here (that few had any familiarity with). Drove up--approximately 530 miles, made the purchase, and drove back (taking only a 1 1/4 hour detour while lost in Des Moines, and a couple of short Navy power naps). Returned nearly exactly 24 hours after departure. Worth every penny, and every minute of effort--on a not-so-young body!

  34. while i respect your opinion, and probably even agree with it, I find your expectations unreasonable for a place filled with so much diversity. i find many things distasteful as I walk through each day, but very little offends me to the point where I feel obligated to impart knowledge of that distaste publicly - especially on the internet. I simply make note and avoid that place/person in the future.

  37. That's precisely what I'd like to find out when the Red Fish start running, maybe hook onto a big bull at the landcut. Jim, thanks for sharing, and thinking about the carrier, but I don't think (?) I'll need one. I will order a bed-extender (see photo), or make something myself. Don't want to hassle with a trailer, and neither do I like the idea of leaving it in the back of my truck when out of town, but I'll find a way to secure it.

  40. That Hobie is nice, but you'll need the carrier also. I bought a sit in and a ride on top. My sit in cost me $225.00, I put on 3 rod holders, oar holder, depth finder, anchor, and a spot for lures as well as the back which holds gear. It weighs 40 lbs, I put it on my roof top of a car, SUV, or minivan. I only need 6 inches of water to be able to navigate through things. I go both salt and freshwater fishing. That's what the sit on top is used for. I can fly fish from either as well as rod and reel and can get in many more places most people can't. You are closer to the water, so there's a slight learning curve for casting. My sit on top is only 47 lbs. I've done blue Fish, Stripers, Fluke, and will be going for shark this year. With fresh water I've done bass, pickerel, pike, panfish, carp, cat fish, and several others. I've done the Delaware River, numerous ,lakes and ponds, and even small streams. It's also easier to carry into the woods when camping and lake hopping even more so than the Hobie. Having said that, the Hobie is what most Yak Fishermen have on their "wants" list. It's extremely versatile, and especially with not needing a paddle more versatile for hands free travel. You can also add on a trolling motor on the rear. I want one of those also. If you have the means and storage and can get the tow carrier go for it. You can't go wrong with one of them.

  42. Maybe this is where I am unclear; is the chart of the woofer only, or is the chart showing the entire working speaker, woofer-->mid-->tweeter? I am assuming this is the entire frequency range of the enclosure through all drivers. "If it helped why would Klipsch not use a little padding in one of their higher model designs, more than likely the tradeoff in efficiency. Just my guess anyways." Yeah, I know what you mean. On my CF-4's to get 1.5 inch thick foam Klipsch just kinda put two 3/4" sheets together folded them and put them in loosely behind the drivers in 3 separate sections and called it a day. There was no cutting, gluing, fitting, or anything else like you or I might do. But like you said, Klipsch ought to have a pretty good idea what they were trying to accomplish, so what do I know? I’ll give it a shot in explaining what I have understood about stuffing a sealed box/chamber vs. lining the walls of a ported box for which the concepts would apply when stuffing the sealed back chamber in a sealed back chamber transducer/driver combination of a front loaded horn. There again, once the horn experts/engineers read the post, they can tweak and correct certain aspects that I may not be clear on. Any sealed cabinet or sealed chamber can potentially benefit from “stuffing” (or potentially made worse in certain instances) as opposed to simply lining the walls, while a vented cabinet does not really have the same benefit. I believe that the primary reason for “lining” the box walls with some type of padding may be to break up standing waves or prevent the midrange sound waves from reflecting back to the cone. In a sealed box, the “theory” was that stuffing a sealed box would make the box “seem” acoustically larger to the transducer/driver. Essentially, I believe that current thinking about this physics may be that this stuffing really increases the resistive impedance within the sealed box, thus lowering “box Q,” which typically results in a “taming” effect to a response peak that can initially be caused by a sealed box that is too small. While the flatter response appears to emulate the response that could be obtained with a larger box, the “fb” and overall sensitivity really remain the same. There again, you get no free lunch as the overall effect is not the same as using a larger sealed box. With "front loaded" horn speakers that have a “sealed back chamber” you have a calculation for the back chamber volume size that is called the “reactance annulling” point and here is an area where “stuffing the back chamber” could make the horn worse or could make the horn much better in overall response, such as the improvements in the response in the example measurements that djk has shown. I suspect that when the La Scala was originally designed, these equations may not have been as specifically known as they are now; however, I believe that we all realize that PWK seemed to do a damn good job of designing his horns with the tools he had to work with at that time and got overall good match ups with the back chamber volume and the K33 drivers he used. This aspect of specific back chamber volume that works in relation to the K33 and the overall horn is one of the reasons that not many 15 inch drivers can be substituted for the K33 with success that results in improvement of sound. I believe that determining the appropriate reactance annulling point given certain "back chamber" volume/size differences for each specific 15 inch transducer modeled may have been what ClaudeJ was doing when he was modeling the different sizes of the back chamber for specific drivers his Quarter-Pies (the ClaudeJ Q-Pies) would need in the Horn Resp program. Both Horn Resp and Akabak are proficient at calculating the actual back chamber volume needed for a specific transducer/driver to achieve the appropriate reactance annulling point for a sealed back chamber front loaded horn design. I do not believe that Horn Resp has the function to calculate the "emulated" chamber size from “stuffing the back chamber;” however, while I’m not 100 percent sure, I believe that Akabak might have that function. Since I have not use Akabak, I may have misunderstood that point though. Another way to think about reactance annulling, is that you can gain “extra bass” near the cut-off point of the horn by aligning the reactive part of the drivers "load" below resonance with the air mass reactance in the throat of the horn. It almost seems like we have found a way to get that “free lunch” or “free bass” in this instance. What we are really describing is that a horn can achieve a higher efficiency at Fc (cut-off) if the overall “system resonance” is close to the Fc. When the system resonance is below Fc a person can “push” the resonance up to a higher point by making the compression chamber smaller. When the compression chamber may be slightly on the small side from perfect reactance annulling volume, “stuffing” the compression chamber will potentially "increase" the size by increasing the resistive impedance within the chamber making it seem “acoustically larger” and help move the resonance close to the Fc of the horn. With a sealed chamber front loading horn, this is a reason why the Fs of the transducer/driver is not necessarily as important as other T/S measurements since the sealed back chamber size in combination with a specific transducer/driver is critical to get system resonance close to the Fc of the horn. I suspect that in the folded horn subs that Jason typically deals with, this type of horn will tend to filter certain harmonics out in the bends of the horn and the stuffing or padding may not have that great of impact.

  46. It is definitely hard waiting after looking for so long, but it should he worth it to pick up the sub you really want. I have spent the last several months reading countless reviews, this forum and AVS in search of a new sub to upgrade from my SW 112. I started off with a budget of $750 targeting the PB 2000 (which I would have certainly been happy with) and ended up crushing my budget and ordering a SB 13 Ultra on Monday. The subwoofer section on AVS can be a very costly place to hang out at! As others have mentioned, all of the subs you are looking at are great choices and no matter which one you get it will be awesome.
