  1. Done with the coffee, big pot of bean soup is simmering on the stove, the F-20 is 100% complete and ready to move into the house, but jamming in the shop and it's time for a silver bullet and a phone call to a friend to get the beast moved inside.

  3. Myself, a couple of my brothers, a nephew, and a few friends have a poker game once a month. It's always a good time. One week you win, the next week you lose, but at the end of the year you probably break even, and that's cheap entertainment. We used to rotate who's hosting the game. But my nephew, who's a terrific carpenter, made a spectacular 8 sided card table. It's black stained oak and granite. It has built in cup holders and a change/money section. It weighs about 400 lbs, too heavy to move, so we have it at his house now….good times. Normally at least a few friends get together once a week and do something. Sometimes poker, Yahtzee, bocci ball in summer. Just an excuse to get out really. We just play on a folding felt poker pad i picked up from a second hand store some time ago, nothing fancy but works great for cards and dice.

  11. Finally located an Otari MX-5050 II b2 2/4 track R2R from one of my RMHC advisors today and he brought it to me from San Antonio. Heads a psychiatric clinic specializing in addiction and was going to the Caddo Indian Conference Nacogdoches this weekend as they were having a session on psychotropics used by that tribe so he just came up last night and stayed over until the AM. He had never checked it out but it was sold to him as working. Didn't get overexcited as I've been there before. Fired it up this morning and, sure enough, the reels took off at 30 or so ips. Not being my first rodeo I knew that meant the idler solenoid was either defective or sticky. Hoping for that later, I operated it several times manually and it fired, but not reliably. So I rocked it in and out of play about a 100 times and it's been fine since. At that point, I could see that the meters were running and such, but had nothing hooked up to hear it. Hauled my Audioengines down from the attic and Hooked them up. Anyway, solenoids are responding nicely, transport is free of jerks or flutter, and the sound is excellent. In fact, I got to thinking, in fact, MUCH better than most commercial prerecorded tapes. This one was a Boston Pops Columbia release. Suddenly, I realized why it was so good. Almost went teary-eyed when I realized that last time that tape sounded the ears receiving were probably Master Paul's. It was from his personal collection. I've emailed Jim Hunter I'm ready for the first batch of PWK's tapes to transfer. There are several hundred hours and most will have dry splices to replace and be very brittle as well. Serious lot of work, but I am humbled and proud to be able to do it. As we go along, Jim will determine what can be released and how it should be done. There will be some serious treasures there. If you've read about PWK's fuming about the crap source material he was stuck with you have to believe the recordings he made personally are going to be pretty stellar. Several genre involved. Aside from the jazz, I am, of course, looking forward to the triple whammy of PWK engineering John Eargle playing the classic Skinner pipe organ in Kilgore. I CANNOT wait to hear that! Then, there is the Joe Holland group, Rule Beasley, and others. Next tears will be if the recording of the Camille Saint-Saëns 3rd with E. Power Biggs he played for me when I visited him turns up. I want to thank Jim and Klipsch for entrusting myself and the RMHC with this work. It will be performed in strict adherence to International Association of Sound and Audiovisual Archives standards. I hope many of you have the opportunity to hear these at some point. Dave

  16. It's spring, and once again I am having to clean carbs and tanks. If you don't know, with ethanol in gas, water gets drawn out of the air and contaminates your gas tanks and carbs with water, rust and sludge. It also dissolves and dry rots rubber and some other materials. There is absolutely no virtue to it. In any event, I think it would be nice to have a reminder next fall for everybody to drain tanks and carbs at the end of the season. It isn't a bad idea without the ethanol, but with it, it is a necessity unless you like taking carbs apart. The easiest way is to not fill the machine up when you are done, and let it run until it dies. If you have a carb with a drain bolt, you can drain what's left that way. There are fuel additives, but I haven't had much luck with them. Mini rant: I hate ethanol, and wish they would finally stop adding it to fuel. Production of this stuff creates a larger carbon footprint than gasoline. It's dumb.

  31. Florida... "Rec" fuel which is high octane and no ethanol additives.; "Stabil" every six months the motor is going to sit; Start all motors, engines, etc., every 30-60 days; run to operating temps. Run mowers, chainsaws, trimmers, etc., "dry", then refuel with fresh fuel. You can leave motors "dry", if the fuel you ran dry has a stabilizer that leaves the gaskets, and other parts "lubricated". I do this all the time with my lawn stuff and my generators. The easy way is once a month start everything, test, and let run for a few minutes. Generators are a "critical' component, so those are run for at least 30 minutes. Schedule the oil change every six months. drain, check and in this day and age, a good synthetic works fine. In Florida, all changed after hurricane season (end of October). Then in April-May as the rainy season starts. Filters... If any of your "stuff" has fuel filters... Change them in the spring cycle. My thoughts and experience from living in the "swamp" for 30 years.... LOL!!! Later,

Ya the guy is saying he wont take a penny less than 2,500 truthfully it sounds like he's full of crap saying he's had tons of hits and offers in the 2,000 range on them and they've only been up since this morning which I somehow doubt given the shape that there in and knowing how hard it is to sell even mint condition audio equipment on craigslist. I think this is one of those things where he thinks by saying he's had tons of offers I will jump on it. The guy that sold me my Chorus's had the listing up for over a month and said I was the first person to respond to the ad and those are mint. When I was thinking of selling my brand new RP-450C I listed it on craigslist and didn't get one hit and when I tried to sell my fully working JBL studio speakers the best offer I got was like 50. I think you guys are right, stay away from this one!

  38. So, I took advantage of the big discounts on Palladiums and ordered a set of P-37’s, along with the center and surrounds in Merlot. I did not order the sub as it is just too big for me and I already had the RT-10D, which is excellent and compact. The Palladiums replace KLF-20s/C7 and KSP-S6 surrounds. They arrived roughly a couple weeks ago. I am driving them with a Denon AVR-X6200W, and I use Audessey room correction. After many years of tinkering, I had my KLF-20’s really, really dialed into my room and they sounded beyond excellent. My expectations for the Palladiums were better looks, slightly better mids/highs, slightly better imaging, and significantly better center integration/matching. I had my doubts about bass, but given I am running a good sub, I was confident I could get the bass dialed in and would be at least as good. In short, my hope was that these would provide the best sound I have ever heard. (No pressure, haha). The first thing to happen was that my RT-10D subwoofer inexplicably died right at the beginning, so it is in the shop, and I am without sub. When I first turned them on (no sub, no Audessey), I immediately noticed that the P’s had potential, mids/highs were smoother and clearer, and I was very surprised by the quality of the bass. But I knew I had some work to do to get the P’s dialed into my room. Now, I have to say again, the previous KLF-20s were really dialed in, so I had a good idea of the sound I was expecting. After two weeks and probably 20 hours of adjusting speaker positions, running Audessey, dozens of times, with multiple Audessey mic patterns, multiple speaker positions, and driving my wife crazy, last night it finally clicked. And Oh. My. God. It was goose-bump-city all evening. Yes, this is the best sound I have ever achieved in my house. Here are my a few tracks that I use to know if I am dialed in: Blue Ray: I use the movie “Battleship”. This movie has tremendous sound effects. When the alien ship breaks up and slams into earth, the explosion effects are supreme. When a piece of the alien ship slams into a glass skyscraper the explosions and smashing glass is incredible. I expect this to improve when I get my sub back, but I am pleasantly surprised how good the P’s perform without the sub. Music: Mark Knopfler – Album: Golden Heart, Track: Golden Heart. This song has some delicate guitar, delicate vocals, along with bass note that has always been a challenge to get sounding perfect in my room. Greg Brown – Album: Down In There, Track: Hillbilly Girl. This song has acoustic guitar, a delicate deep simple drum beat, and vocals that that will sound grating/awful if my midrange is not dialed in. Yarn – Album: Yarn, Track: Listen Up Sweetheart. This song has acoustic bass, steel guitar, mandolin, gentle snare drum and a certain spaciousness that I look for. Many others, but I use the above ones because I am very familiar with them and they tell me when something ain’t right. Overall happy camper here! Pics:

  40. Nearly everybody is running REW nowadays, tons of support. The most popular microphone is MiniDSP's UMIK-1. Cross-Spectrum not only keeps them in stock but also provides very accurate calibration files that go down to 5 hz, from three different angles. Basically for $100 you can get a real nice setup that's as powerful and accurate as you'll ever need. REW also does waterfall graphs so that you know how to set up your acoustic panels and fix issues with ringing and whatnot, plus a bunch of other stuff. There is a sine wave generator so you can do like I mentioned earlier, go through your room 1 hz at a time and isolate rattles. http://cross-spectrum.com/measurement/calibrated_umik.html

  41. Looks like a bunch of dead pine trees stuck in the ground to me. We actually went round and round with this. My land was an empty field but abandoned for about 15 years, so all the trees are very young. The only tree that was large enough to bolt something to it was over 4' in diameter and seemed to have a rotten core. Just didn't seem very safe. We found a spot that was sandwiched in between two decent but younger trees plus my plum orchard. They'll have to deal with it. you need me to come down there and show you how to hit em on the far edges of the field?? Roger

  42. I like this story from CNN. It seems to cover all points well. The one thing it doesn't offer is an annual alarm clock for the fall. The title of this thread says it all. If you forget that, then you are going to have trouble come spring, unless you are one of the lucky ones that has superior gas. I want what JJK is having. edit: I found another story. It seems that well sealed containers that are full may tend to last longer. Humidity, evaporation, and air seem to be the bad guys. In my sace, it is humidity plus ethanol = water in the bottom of the tank causing rust and scale which clogs stuff up. Also a problem are rubber components that are not ethanol safe. Here is the story: Maintenance Monday: Shelf life of gasoline

  48. Welcome to the forum. Where are you located? As mentioned, photos would help. Without photos, the following is mostly generalized speculation. Decorators typically go for less than factory finished versions of a similar vintage. Decorators that have been "finished" by an individual could have a lower value than unfinished decorators, or a value approaching factory finished. It all depends upon the quality of the work done.
