  3. just so you know, on the commercial side, i was taught by pwk that the source to the speakers did not matter. whether a cd player or a live band, the speaker had to do both. when a new product come up, we routinely listen to consumer speakers versus the commercial. in commercial demos, we have been accused of sounding hifi....i think that's good.....

  4. Why would anyone spend all that money on a emotiva xpa-1 to run a sub? Your paying extra money for a fancy housing and looks, that you wouldn't have to pay for with a pro amp. You had one bad run in with one pro amp and your calling it a day? 98% of diy sub guys run pro amps. The inuke 6000dsp I run runs 4400 watts for 399$ on amazon all day. And there is a ton of dsp capabilities with it. Don't need that? Save your money and buy a 6000 non dsp model. Just don't see reason for buying a emotova for sub duty.

  5. Hi all, it's been a while. Hello again from the great non-white north! We've had a delightfully warm summer and the wasps are running rampant on account of it... sigh... Not complaining though - enjoying time with the kiddos! Chuck! (Tarheel Chuck) Congrats on rounding the corner toward 200,000 views on this thread, working toward 19,000 replies and won't be long and it'll be 1,000 pages in just over two years! Who'da thunk way back when, it would come to this? I'm sure you'll have a book deal with Malcolm Gladwell soon on catchy social media usage, I'm looking forward to my autographed copy with a cup of dark roast. The pioneer post:

  13. Because we lawyers don't want them there. We pick juries to have more than one person decide the case. Most jurors are not versed in legal jargon and are a bit intimidated by it. Lawyers are "specially" trained to know certain things about "the law" which just don't appear in those plain-vanilla jury charges. Before you know it, a well-versed attorney on a jury will be running the whole show while all the other jurors just follow his/her lead. In that case, you might as well just try the case to a single juror and flip a coin. Putting several people on a jury tends to insure less whimsical decision-making and a greater depth of "life's experience," whatever that is.

  14. We have a jury system to promote democracy and avoid tyranny. If the king's judges can rule on your fate, corruption will abound. "A jury of your peers" essentially allows you to escape the wrath of the king for pissing off his daughter.

  15. I've heard you mention that before. I've never used one. How do you keep temperature and pour rate the same from pot to pot? Heuristics. I'm not that smart, but it works for me...

  18. The thing is, you can get just as weird with the temperature control and all that but do it all on a tiny budget just by using a Melitta pour over carafe.

  21. One of my best friends owns a Technivorm, and swears he will never own another brand. I've had a cup brewed from it (although, just one), and it was excellent.

  22. I just googled it as I've never heard of the brand. Pretty cool looking and good reviews.

  23. Excellent question and post. The short answer is that most people here when given the choice (for example loudspeakers) will gravitate to a quality made in the USA brand when possible. That, and as much as we like coffee, we like speakers more.

  24. I just did a search of this thread and found were no hits for "Technivorm." How can that be? For all of you who like drip coffee, Technivorm is the way to go. I get cups of coffee which are better than most high-end coffee shops and brews at parity with the best of them. 1400-watt heating element makes it the only manufacturer (AFAIK) that meets Specialty Coffee Association of America standards for brewing temperature 206 ° F, as opposed to typical coffeemakers which brew at 185° F. at best. We've owned a Moccamaster KBT 741 for 10-12 years now and it still brews like a champ. We later bought a Technivorm thermos to keep it hot for 2 hours, although the stock thermos is pretty good in its own right. Five year warranty but never needed it. Here's a link to good specs and explanation (I have no affiliation to the web site or the manufacturer): http://www.roastmasters.com/moccamaster.html

  30. My opinion........what pro models I have heard they are very musical. Also one thing to remember, like our 2 Ch setup, it's rated over 110Db @ 1 watt, and rated for a couple hundred watts and still in very respectable distortion figures. So when I play the same speakers at 1 or 2 watts the distortion is extremely low, the drivers are barely working. With this you have headroom like crazy and a speaker that is just coasting along with no sound of strain or fatigue at all, it sounds effortless. OK I'm partial

  33. I wasnt even two months old.If the wife and i married right out of high school. We would be on 16 years. Since we test drove our relationship for 10 years. We only have six. Sent from my SM-N920P using Tapatalk Not even 2 months old, our youngest daughter is your age, now I'm really feeling old. You only have 6 years but I would think the previous 10 years should count for something, that is one long test drive.

Putting several people on a jury tends to insure less whimsical decision-making and a greater depth of "life's experience," whatever that is. I agree with this entirely. Unpicking (which is really what we do, unpick a jury) is completely different for civil and criminal cases. There isn't a one size fits all for any particular type of case. When the client is able I have always utilized a jury consultant like Robert Herschorn. If they can't afford it I do it in other ways on a shoestring. It is probably the most important single part of a trial. I have left a few attorneys on jurys with good results. When it comes down to it and I am on the fence I go with my gut. That is all I know about jury selection. Travis

  37. That would bug me. I use a timer to make espresso making sure that I get 2 Oz in 25 seconds. I time my French press as well. As soon as my pot makes it's first hiss I pour it in the press. The Bunn takes care of itself.

  45. The crossover is indeed 825Hz according to Klipsch. https://web.archive.org/web/20120102162503/http://www.klipsch.com/klf-30 The woofers are 12", which means that center to center on a normal KLF-30 the distance is 12.5" or nearly touching. I wonder what would happen if you reversed polarity between the two woofers?

  50. Interesting reading this thread! I've encountered some pretty bad sounding DJ/PA systems. It was actually kinda funny one year. A little over a year ago, for my friend's wedding, he asked me if he could borrow some of my equipment to "DJ" the reception. I ended up bringing a pair of RF-5s and my old Yamaha R-V702 pro-logic reciever and set it up in a stereo configuration. I also stuck on an old Yamaha YST-40 sub. And yes, the music was provided via MP3's queued up on a laptop computer. Like people is really going to tell/care the difference between the quality of the MP3 and the CD itself, especially considering this was the usual wedding type fair such as "The Electric Slide" or "Y.M.C.A". The night before the wedding, we setup this thing and tested it out. I was actually pretty darned impressed at just how good those RF-5s sounded with that Yamaha in that kind of setting. They are definitly not "DJ/pro-audio", but they definitly worked! That night, me, my friend, his father and his brother all decided to go hit the local Buffalo Wild Wings for a few drinks. That night, they had a DJ there. That setup they had just sounded like complete $#!+! My friend's brother was telling me those Klipsch that I brought in for the wedding sounded way, way better! It was so horrible that we ended up leaving and going somewhere else. At the wedding itself the next day, I've gotten several comments about how good the music sounded. I ought to see if I can score some industrial LaScalas and do some DJ'ing as a side business (and use CD's as well as MP3's) As much as people diss on MP3s around here, you cannot deny just how convenient they are (you could easily put a full nights worth of music on something like an iPod, instead of lugging huge cases of records/CD's), and most people would not be able to tell the difference in most typical settings anyway - especially if you use higher bitrate encoding.
