  1. Finally home from Hope and ready to resume my normal snark. I may be a little off my game for a while as i wait for the fog to lift from my brain. There's a few brain cells that will never function again which is scary as there was barely enough to go around to begin with. I hope all the other travelers returning home from Arkansas make it safely back to their respective families. I miss my Klipsch brothers and sisters already. Sigh.

Going to watch This Old House in a few minutes and see what Tom, Norm, and the gang are working on in Detroit. Have a great Sunday Gents!

  5. Greetings to all! Mark, I have been doing a little spinning and even visited the BS forum, a little bit so far. Posting here at times as per usual, which seem to come in spurts. Cheers to you and all my Irish friends. Missing my Stout, Dark, and Harp lately, so will have to remedy that. Looked back to my last offerings here, and have not found much to cause me remorse, when I imbided a bit the other evening. Of course, granted, I may not gone far enough toward the rear, as in retreat, Communication, at least for me, can be challenging at times giving a good back in forth, even for members I am more familiar with. To those and others I offer, no offense meant, and likely none taken. Speaking of retreat, I thought of the beginning of this now famous movie's opening, of which I may have only seen over the years maybe only twice. What with the convenience of Netflix, I am now watching yet again, along with Saul, of course.:

  16. I could use some help.I own and successfully incorporated the MEN220 into my two channel system and it works very well. C2500 > MEN220 > MC275 MK VI > Klipschorns / dual subs I just purchased a NIB MX151 and for the life of me can't get this figured out. I have read many pages and watched a couple of videos on setting the Room Perfect but..... System: MX151 > Emotiva XPA-5 > Klipschorns / Belle center / dual subs and Martin Logan in-wall side surrounds. I am using the same KHorns in both systems with a switch (been doing this with numerous systems over the years) Subs in AUX 1 and 2 at sub 80. FL and FR are set to XL, center to M and surrounds to small. Attempting to set custom fronts results in error in set up but I will get into that later down the road. I measured and input the distances and initiated the RP Guided Tour. After getting the very efficient front wall db levels to work RP allowed me to proceed. I made it thru the focus and 5 positions with 93% learned and mid 50s processing. I thought I was set but when I fired up some tunes from my Oppo 105D thru HDMI the sound was not very good at all (my listening space is very bad which is why I went with RP in the first place). The sound on my 2 channel in the same room with MEN220 is very good; with MX not so much. Now with music playing I switch from Focus 1 to Global to Bypass I get ZERO difference in sound. When I do this on the MEN it has a slight muting then changes and you easily can tell a difference. Back to the MX; with Room Perfect light ON I press the Trim button on the remote and the first thing displayed is TRIM OFF and no matter what I do that it never changes to anything other than TRIM OFF. Going thru the Trim menu and adjusting gain, bass, treble, etc never results in any change in sound i.e. adjusting Bass to +10 does nothing. It seems to my simple mind that I am missing something about this TRIM OFF. help?

  17. Auto calibration programs do this to make us feel good, lol. Ditto on the above advice. No reason not to use a global XO. There is real benefit to setting the speakers to the lowest XO as possible. It will take more avr juice that could be used for increase dynamics. Auto calibration is taking the speaker response based off of it's location and room interaction. If the surrounds are on a wall or near a boundary, they will appear larger. This room reinforcement does not mean the speaker can really play that low.

  20. I am using this first on my 2-way Cornscala's. They are in current rotation. Lol. Using my existing cables with the el cheapo adapters I get ZERO NOISE. That is comforting because the power switch on the DBX 1231 is on the back and when I first clicked it on the transformer hum had me worried. The engineers at DBX likely weren't when they designed this professional unit... This EQ replaces a BBE Sonic Maximizer 422 I have had for years. A club I service had two of them and a Hafler DH 120 on the trash pile one day as I was leaving. I have enjoyed them DAILY ever since. Almost hurts to listen to my tunes with the 422 bypassed. This "curve" tightens the bass, softens the sometimes harsh midrange (entirely dependent on the recording - ANY Dire Straights recording sounds perfect) and puts a sharpness in the cymbals that the simple bass and treble controls (+/- 5db in this case) couldn't quite etch, even with the Sonic Maximizer "in". And Steve, I use this through the tape loop. This preamp has two if I ever want to use a tape player again - LOL! I have never used a 31 band EQ before. Adjusting one slider ONLY with all the others flat hardly registers to me. I will be toying with this for a while. Another feature of this EQ is the "15 or 6 db" button. I found it easier to come up with a better curve in the 15db setting. Less is more, but more sounds better at moderate levels. I guess at club levels you might punch it down to 6db of plus or minus gain from the sliders to keep drivers/amps from frying. I had managed to "Xmax" my woofers last week listening to one particularly serious bass riff CRANKED BRIEFLY to about 11 o'clock. I was pushing it hard and had my hand on the volume dial before they crackled a second time. The square magnet K-33-E's in my Cornscala's were otherwise unscathed by my riding the gain, this time... I can't believe I wouldn't have stumbled into 31 band equalizer by now. All this purist pretention... for what? Sub par sound? I have read it hear now many times, our individual rooms account for huge variances in perceived sound. You can also use 1/4 Phono to RCA adapters on the DBX, but I WILL be taking the Ashly Protea 3.6 for a ride soon enough so I needed the XLR adapters anyway. Steve, go,for it!

  26. Interesting this item came up. Growing up we ALL hear what we are supposed to be blended with. Mom, (Indiana Hick) told us kids, Amish, Quaker, Penn Dutch, German, and that was pretty much all we heard. WE, us kids never really gave a chit. 40+ some years later a cousin calls and says she has a new hobby of Genetics, and is willing to pay for a DNA test on me. This must come from a male member of the family as our DNA does not really change from Generation to Generation. So i say sure, And it comes back i am 101% Irish, with zero other influence So much for MoM & Family BS. Now where was i .........oh yeah, Crackin a Guinness

  39. I just made the best broccoli, cheddar and pimiento soup ever, so I have to share this recipe. Ingredients: Yields about 8 cups. 1 head of broccoli, chopped into roughly 1" pieces 4 oz shredded cheddar cheese 1 4 oz jar pimientos 2 cups 2% milk 3/4 stick of real butter 4 cups broth (I use bullion cubes and mix in boiling water) 4 tbsp all purpose flour 1/2 a large yellow onion, chopped finely but not too small (not minced) 1 fresh jalapeno pepper, chopped finely (keep the seeds for a little kick) 2 sticks of celery, chopped finely 1/3 green bell pepper, chopped coarsely into roughly 3/4 - 1" squares 1/3 red bell pepper, chopped coarsely salt black pepper Directions: In a soup pan, melt 4 tbsp (1/2 stick) of butter. Once melted, stir in the flour, and as it warms up, it should become a nice, creamy mixture. As soon as it begins to bubble (boil), remove from heat and set aside. In a skillet, add onion, bell pepper, celery, jalapeno and 2 tbsp (1/4 stick) of butter. Sautee over medium heat until the onions start to brown. The vegetables should be nice and soft when ready. Do not over cook them. Set aside. In a sauce pan, add bullion cubes to 4 cups of water. Bring to a boil and stir to be sure cubes are fully dissolved. In a blender, add the bullion and the 4 oz of pimientos. Pulse briefly about 6 or 7 times until the pimientos are chopped up and mixed well into the broth. Warm up the flour/butter mixture until it starts to bubble again. Then, add the milk. Bring to the beginning of a boil. Then, add the broth/pimientos. At the same time, add the sauteed vegetables and broccoli (the broccoli is still raw at this point and will soften within a few minutes after adding to the broth.) The mixture should be very warm, but it should not be boiling. After the broccoli begins to soften, add the 4 oz. of shredded cheddar cheese slowly and melt it into the soup. Add salt and pepper to taste. Here is a picture: Reference: See this video of a pimiento soup recipe for a visual. I basically watched the video and modified the recipe. This reference video shows a thicker soup, like a chowder. I added a greater broth/milk ratio to thin it down and make it more like a bisque. I think it is much better this way. Enjoy!
