  2. So one of our three year old grandsons spent a couple nights with us and we played downstairs with his cars, trucks and race car set. Yes, he is a car guy already. I thought I could get a great picture of him standing next to a Jubilee casual like, kinda' leaning against it, then maybe holding him up with his head inside the horn. Oh, before anyone reports me to child services they were Not playing. Being tucked back in corners it seems he never really noticed them before but he damn well did when I said "lets go stand by the speaker so Grandpa can take your picture". He looked up at that thing and pulled away, kinda whimpering, no I don't want to. "Karter what's wrong? "It's gonna get me, it's a Transformer! I don't want his big head to get me"! So I scratched that bright idea. Maybe KGI should get in touch with the movie studio - a great guest appearance!

  19. Actually RECIEVING a patent for something is NOT so easy! In order to patent something the wording within the patent application must show that the item is unique, OR significantly different from previously patented items. For example, one could receive a patent for a bifurcated pathway double "S" horn bass horn speaker provided it was SIGNIFICANTLY different from one previously patented. Unfortunately, there have already been patents granted for such an item. So, if BY DESIGN it is NOT significantly different, then it must be significantly different in one or more OTHER ways, either in its design or within the wording of the patent application. One could also attempt to patent the entire system, as a two-way system, or a CONVERTIBLE system (meaning it could start out as a one or two way system and be added to later on to become a better system as a three or four way system)....PROVIDING that it does not appear to be infringing on a previously-issued patent. Such was case with the "convertible" system which had its patent granted in 1957 (after a wait of three years!) to William Hartsfield. The key to HIS patent was that it was a CONVERTIBLE system, which could be upgraded over time as the owner could afford to do so, by simply changing out a few REMOVEABLE PARTS, and replacing those parts with other parts and adding more components along with a crossover network to support the additional components added. Those removable parts were included in the patent application, because they HAD TO BE included in order to stand a chance at RECEIVING the patent. This would make the system into a two-way, then a three-way, and later a four-way system, with everything happening within the SAME bass bin cabinet design. IOW, if Hartsfield had not SOUGHT a patent on a "convertible loudspeaker", then he would never have been granted the patent to begin with. After JBL had built the Hartsfield and marketed it for a number of years, its team of engineers CHANGED the build of the Bass bin significantly to the SECOND "Hartsfield" model...using the name for their new speaker, which was basically a bifurcated double "S" horn design, which they adopted PRIMARILY to cut down on production costs of the more complicated build involved in the ORIGINAL Hartsfield. See the pics below to get an idea of WHY William Hartsfield was originally granted a patent for his "convertible" Hartsfield speaker: Figures 1, 2, and 3 show how the SINGLE driver fired forward, while the bass bin was powered off the backside of it....using the removable ducting element that allowed for that. Figure 5 shows that it has been "converted" and now has a large woofer firing through a compression slot into the bass bin from a removable sealed enclosure, while a compression mid-horn is now firing forward. And you can see between the three pics which parts were removable to make it a CONVERTIBLE loudspeaker...all the way up to a four-way speaker, with additions of upper mid horn and tweeter. Just for chits and giggles...look at the bottom pic, which shows HOW the Original Hartsfield speaker bass horn actually worked...and just above that in light blue, is the JBL engineer team re-design of the bass horn in the "new" Hartsfield which replaced the original Hartsfield bass horn lens sometime around 1960 or a couple of years earlier...significant change, huh? If you put the JBL Hartsfield re-design up for comparison to the Jubilee bass bin design, you can more similarity that dis-similarity...both are bifurcated double "S" horns...with the MAJOR differences in the BASIC design being exactly WHERE the bifurcated pathway begins in the bass horn and how each units woofer(s) are fired into that bifurcated pathway. Trying to actually get a patent awarded is not so much in the design OR the wording of the patent application...but is a combination of BOTH, if a patent is to actually be awarded. Patent applications get turned down nowadays far more often then they get granted, simply because they are such a PITA to write up properly in order to get the patent awarded. It is just so difficult nowadays because there are so many MORE THINGS which have been patented over the years and which a part of the patent application may infringe upon! If you actually just READ the Klipschorn patent which PWK wrote, you will see how much hassle it was even back then!

  21. @heavyP Let me comment on my experience with Khorns and La Scalas. I have a 13'X19' room. When I first setup my Khorns I had them on the 13' wall and they sounded terrible. Absolutely muddy and I thought I made the wrong decision. A couple days later I moved everything to the 19' wall. The Khorns opened up and provided me with the experience that everyone talks about. The 13' wall just didn't provide them with enough room to breathe. I also have a set of La Scalas that I use in my home theater in the basement room directly below with the same exact dimensions (shorter ceiling) I keep the La Scalas on the short 13' wall and they perform flawlessly with a subwoofer. In my opinion, you should stick with the La Scalas and add a sub with your size room. Just my 2 cents.

  22. While not a professional I have done live sound for 30+ years and learned mostly the hard way. Currently I am mixing sound for my church that has children sing and perform plays and skits, mostly around holidays. We have the same issue hearing the children especially the younger ones. The only solution I have found that works is to mic each of them. I do not work for Shure but I do use their wireless SLX mic's for this purpose - cheap mics are feedback producers. Also some eq'ing is needed but since I am using identical mics the parametrics are almost the same for each. *** One must remind the parents to have children dress in clothing that the wireless mic can be attached too, including the transmitter pack. I very much agree with @DrWho as he is explaining my hard lessons with the laws of physics. Lastly I do "ride the mutes" and for that reason also use mute groups as well - anything to raise GBF.

  25. Old thread but an update... After a month and a half or so later we finally got our schedules to match. Living up north work travel is very common and we have been out of sync. The RB61 IIs were delivered a week ago. He is absolutely blown away and has given his former speakers that these replaced to another friend (domino effect). He is something of a musician and frequents one of the pubs with open mic nights as a participant. The live sound is not what he was used to or expecting. He has been texting me all week as he tweaks the positioning and can't believe the difference is sound and detail. Another member of the Klipsch tribe is born.

  27. It's astonishing how so many of the prominent lead singers have passed from this era. Out of my 4 favorite bands from the early 90's, only one is still alive...no pun intended. Eddie Vedder. It started with Kurt, then came Layne and Scott last year. Now, Chris. There were a few other guys back in the day that were unable to survive their wild youth. It really surprises me about Chris. Even though he battled some drug issues, he seemed like the most level-headed of the group. I guess I won't get to see these guys in reunion tours 20 years from now like my parents have been able to enjoy so many acts from the 60's and 70's.

Starbucks on Monday began testing coffee ice cubes in iced coffee drinks in two markets, St. Louis and Baltimore, according to spokesperson Holly Shafer. She called it a "very small test" that includes just 100 stores of the nearly 25,000 Starbucks around the globe. "It's one of several tests going on," Shafer told ABC News. "Our scale allows us to test things quickly to see what's next." She said the company then gathers feedback from customers and employees. In the participating stores, customers can add ice that's been made using Starbucks coffee to any iced espresso or brewed coffee beverage for 80 cents.

  33. Not trying to take anything at all away from Roy in Jubilee development, since PWK himself and Roy were the KEY PLAYERS....BUT, there was somebody ELSE who did quite a lot of the "grunt work" on the Jubilee bass bin, in all of its prototypes/changes/rebuilds/etc. He also laid up a number of variants of the fiberglass high/mid horns as changes occurred in its initial development. He worked "hand-in-hand" with Roy and PWK throughout the development of the Jubilee speaker (as did others). Unfortunately for Mike, he had refused to move to Indianapolis when corporate told him he would have to do so, and was eventually "let go" from his position in the Hope R&D department not very long after the Jubilee development under PWK's guidance was completed and PWK himself passed away. His first name is "Mike", and we have been buddies since we were in high school at Prescott together. A couple of years after Klipsch let him go, he built a few pairs of Jubilees for people who were wanting them, but could not buy them through Klipsch at the time. Please keep in mind that Klipsch R&D has always had a number of employees...some are engineers, while some are worker bees, and the work load is shared within the department...to include the "grunt work". The Jubilee bass bin prototypes went through a number of revisions, and almost all of those revisions required a COMPLETELY new rebuild of the bass bin in order to incorporate those revisions, so that it could be tested and either meet the design parameters or require more revisions in order to get to that point. That is the nature of things in the R&D realm. Mike and I would sit and talk about the changes every time I visited him...so I was constantly hearing about the "what and why" of the Jubilee bass bin development. Because both Mike and I shared a mutual admirable respect for PWK, and each other...we tended to key on his R&D work in our conversations whenever we visited each other. Some of his most prized possessions are two framed photos he has...one with PWK, Roy and himself in front of the finally-completed Jubilee, and another of PWK and himself shaking hands in front of the completed Jubilee.

  36. For $200 the choir mic technique may be the only choice and I have done that with mic's on stands. Unfortunately the issue still remains of the children not projecting well and with the mic's several feet away the problem will still exist. I would agree that this technique will provide some improvement especially for the children that do speak up. P.S. This technique can pick up a lot of unwanted noise as well such as paper shuffling and sounds made by the children moving around.

  46. A woman was nagging her husband to cut the grass, to which the husband answered, "What do I look like to you? A landscaper?!" Next time the sink was dripping, she asked him again, "Honey, can you fix the faucet?" The husband replied, "What do I look like to you? A Plumber?!" Two days later, a light bulb went out and she begged him again, "Honey, can you change the light bulb?" His reply was, "What am I? An electrician?!" A few days later, the husband comes home from work to find that the lawn is cut, the faucet is fixed, the light bulb is changed. Very surprised, he says, "Honey, what happened here?" The wife replies, "You know our new next door neighbor? He came over and fixed everything." The husband says, "Honey, how did you pay him?!" "Oh, you know," the wife says, "he told me that I could either bake him a cake or have sex with him." Somewhat relieved the husband asks, "Whew, so what kind of a cake did you bake for him?" The wife replies, "Who do you think I am? Betty Crocker?!"
