  2. Finally ...the heat wave is over, we have currently at 6.55 pm. around the 73F, it is slightly windy as well as cloudy. A relief after these days of heat paralysis. Finally oxygen again in the forest air around the house. Wonderful. Unfortunately, however, thunderstorms were announced, in 2 days it should go off. Hopefully it comes thereby not again to catastrophes like the flooding of the Ahtal Vally with over 140 dead, like last year.

So what? took my multivitiman, b-complex, omega IIIs pill and that gingko whatever. Have to get more tea, a few more pretzels there's some mustard leftover... Ambience by JETHRO TULL from `02!!

  7. Picture of one of my Futterman H3aa's, the granddaddy of all OTL amps. Served me well for 25 years, then fritzed, the tube regulator tube blew up, probably easy fix of bad resistor. Set them aside, but pulled the other working amp out to test: It would warm up alright, sound OK, then start to sound worse. Fear it also needs a little attention, retubing. I have a set of tubes on hand, so just need to get the ball rolling someday on this. In the meantime, very lucky to cross paths with the Merz Mellow 20W OTL (6336 output tubes), I've had it about a year, and so nice. Craig Merz built them for me, seems he had some PC boards made, but still had a tough time selling perhaps a half dozen run. I bought his last PC board amps, and unfortunately passed on similar point to point version with different 6080 tubes.

  10. For a more refined taste, you have ridiculously efficient speakers so the amplifier sweet spot will be at a much lower output level. A higher powered single ended amplifier with some even harmonics is what the captain calls for. Single ended Class A2 Full pentode operation both driver and output stage Special grid drive circuit won't produce nasty sounding blocking distortion and bias shift 12 watts RMS no more than 1.5% THD The amp will produce 20 watts RMS but at higher distortion levels. I always rate my amplifiers very conservatively so there is adequate headroom. For music reproduction playback which high power demands are typically short duration transients you have plenty of headroom. Power tube 6550 Voltage amp stage 6SJ7 Since it's Class A and the load is fairly constant there is no need of regulation. With Pentodes not having the best power supply ripple rejection great care was taken in the power supply with the use of a Large Choke and lots of filtering to attain an extremely low ripple DC supply. Tube rectifier also adds damping making rectifier induced ringing typically found with Silicon rectifiers nonexistent. Exotic wood chassis - Caribbean Rosewood High end paint finish - BMW Mineral White Metallic with clear coat

  11. You wanted power so you got it, I didn't want to go the parallel push pull route so I squeaked over 100 watts from two sweep tubes. At 100 watts THD is nearing 2%, but the plates start to get a little red pushing them this hard so I'm calling it a 70 watt amplifier since I don't see any redness at that power output. But you have plenty of reserve power for music reproduction which are typically short duration transients. So for music it pushing over 100 watts is fine but RMS sine wave testing makes the plates unhappy. At 70 watts RMS no more than 1.5% THD (1kHz) Full Pentode operation -10db feedback All supplies are fully regulated via pass regulators Vplate = 500v Vscreen = 150v preamp tubes 12AU7, x3 Balanced input

  13. I have a set of KG 1.2 bookshelf speakers that have been sitting for many years, and I now have a use for them. Not currently hooked up to anything, but I remember that one of the tweeters was inoperative. Is there a source to replace it with a new unit? Or, is there a suitable non-factory replacement I can use? I know these are not state-of-the-art, but the cabinets and covers are near perfect, and they will fill my need for a small setup. Thanks! P.S. To the person in NE Iowa who sold me his Klipschorns in 2014 or 2015, they are still perfect and my wife has stopped complaining (about the speakers).

  27. Crazy weather the past few days around here. Cool and in the mid 70's but dropping down to low/mid 50's at night. Today the warm up starts again. Just in time for the annual Bratwurst Festival, which starts Thursday and ends Saturday night. Don't start George! Just 250k people here in Duckburg in 3 days. 3 stages on the main drag and plenty of fun for everyone. It's a PITA and nothing like the real German festival but, in all, it's a pretty good time. I'll just grill some brats here and avoid the lines @ the stands. One 3 day rule though is every club or concession stand must offer bratwurst so you get some different makers to choose from. I've finally found a guy who makes the old style brats I grew up with as a kid until the guys passed away and took the recipe with them. A buck back in the day 45 years ago to $4.50 today. Yea, I'll just stick close to home and avoid the rush! I never know who's gonna swing by for a cold Heineken. It'll sort!

  28. If a grammarian walked into a bar... • An Oxford comma walks into a bar where it spends the evening watching the television getting drunk and smoking cigars. • A dangling participle walks into a bar. Enjoying a cocktail and chatting with the bartender, the evening passes pleasantly. • A bar was walked into by the passive voice. • An oxymoron walked into a bar, and the silence was deafening. • Two quotation marks walk into a “bar.” • A malapropism walks into a bar, looking for all intensive purposes like a wolf in cheap clothing, muttering epitaphs and casting dispersions on his magnificent other, who takes him for granite. • Hyperbole totally rips into this insane bar and absolutely destroys everything. • A question mark walks into a bar? • A non sequitur walks into a bar. In a strong wind, even turkeys can fly. • Papyrus and Comic Sans walk into a bar. The bartender says, "Get out -- we don't serve your type." • A mixed metaphor walks into a bar, seeing the handwriting on the wall but hoping to nip it in the bud. • A comma splice walks into a bar, it has a drink and then leaves. • Three intransitive verbs walk into a bar. They sit. They converse. They depart. • A synonym strolls into a tavern. • At the end of the day, a cliché walks into a bar -- fresh as a daisy, cute as a button, and sharp as a tack. • A run-on sentence walks into a bar it starts flirting. With a cute little sentence fragment. • Falling slowly, softly falling, the chiasmus collapses to the bar floor. • A figure of speech literally walks into a bar and ends up getting figuratively hammered. • An allusion walks into a bar, despite the fact that alcohol is its Achilles heel. • The subjunctive would have walked into a bar, had it only known. • A misplaced modifier walks into a bar owned a man with a glass eye named Ralph. • The past, present, and future walked into a bar. It was tense. • A dyslexic walks into a bra. • A verb walks into a bar, sees a beautiful noun, and suggests they conjugate. The noun declines. • A simile walks into a bar, as parched as a desert. • A gerund and an infinitive walk into a bar, drinking to forget. • A hyphenated word and a non-hyphenated word walk into a bar and the bartender nearly chokes on the irony.

  29. Just thought about it but you might want to swap tweeters first or pull the bad one and check it with a meter to isolate the problem before throwing money at it just to be sure. could be a loose wire or crossover problem you never know until you check.

  30. Yes the KG's use the same 1", 8 ohm diaphragm as most of the non-Heritage line mid '80's through 2000 and beyond in some models mainly Pro series. I'd recommend the Crites titanium if you're willing to spend the bucks or there's some cheaper knock offs on eBay if you're on a tight budget but I've never used those so cannot comment on their quality or longevity.

  32. Of all the sharp-cutoff pentodes, the 6SJ7 (and 12SJ7) seem to be the best for audio. I've heard a few in various homebuilt amps and preamps and they are quiet and sound good in pentode or triode mode.

  34. Yes you were correct it did pique the interest of other members and I got some private messages about it. I'll respond to the inquiries but also answer them openly. The circuit is a little different then the one originally posted. You can't tell how it will exactly sound from a simulation and calculations and I wanted to try different front end tubes. Although some gave better numbers including the original 6AU6a I eventually opted for the 6SJ7GT after listening to the breadboards. The 6SJ7GT sounded the best to my ears. It's possible the slightly higher harmonics added to the increased soundstage but I felt of all the pentodes I tried it was the smoothest and had the best imaging. It takes a lot of time to find the right combination. I don't just try different tubes, I also try different operating points of each tube. With pentodes you have many options, run the screen very low for low current with a high load on the plate for starved mode operation, or a more typical operating point that datasheets steer you towards. Hifi you typically want center bias but sometimes shifting it slightly will give results you like. The output stage is the same.

  36. Well there's little doubt that a good quality integrated amp will be far superior to a receiver. But your examples are all over the spectrum in respect to price. What is your budget and are you dead set on a SS integrated? Any interest in tubes? We already know you like to listen at high volumes, but what size is your room?

  38. You see ..I´m using my RF 7 EvoTec ( moddyfied RF7MKII ) SS as well as hybrid as well as tube amp combination. Using my moddyfied MARANTZ SA11-S3 SS is a dream with these speaker. The MF M6 is a good idea , I had an audition with the origin MK II and the M 6 ..pretty pretty nice ! McIntosh or Rotel, you´ll have to choose ,budget wise, but I would say 98% from alle available SS in the World market will sound pretty with the RF7MKII. Don´t forget modern Class D Amps with Hypex nCore or Purifi Modules , they´re cheaper and save a lot of current consumption in times where prices raising and raising. If you want to see a litle bit how my EvoTec do look like ....

  41. I just wanted to build another tube amplifier and chose this one for a forum project the reason being I already have one among all the other tube amplifiers I ever wanted when I was younger. Reason for offering to sell after building. Mine is already spoken for when and if it is ever finished. I say when because at my age and health one never knows. Tomorrow is not promised to us. No money will be exchanged until it is finished and ready to ship.

  43. Hey you other builders, I want to make this thread a group teaching lesson for a beginner to be able to build an amplifier. Let's settle on this design. One reason is Maynard is a long time member of this forum and a friend of mine who talked me into joining this forum a few years back. What do you builders think of this design? It uses a simple SS PS supply and has 2 stages of amplification. I like 2 stage SET amplifiers to build. There are some 1 tube builds but most SET's have a pre stage and a power stage. I like to think a 2 stage sounds better. It is simple with very few parts of which many such as Nelson Pass thinks sounds best. Fewer is better KISS. Uses 200V DC to make power instead of many designs that are 400V's +. Self biasing where a beginner does not have to do any adjustments when finished. No need for them to stick their fingers in a running amplifier. I want others to join in to explain how they go about building an amplifier from a schematic. The days of cheap audio kits with detailed instructions are few these days. A person that may be interested in building a tube amplifier is left trying to do so using a schematic. Let's all of us try and teach how to do it like we are teaching our teenage kid who is interested in electronics and wants to build something. Klipsch speakers and electronics sorta go together. Let's face it we all like electronics. I like to break this schematic into sections. The most complicated schematic is a bunch of different sections joined together. I am using sections instead of the word circuits, KISS. This amplifier has 3 sections. The PS section and two audio sections using two tubes. The critters around the rectifier and the two tubes are there to make the rectifier section and the two tubes work. The PS section which I have already put together has 7 critters. There is a bridge rectifier, I think a bridge rectifier is easier for a beginner to work with, and has 4 pins. the two center pins are for the AC from the transformer to hook to. One of the other pins is marked + and I hooked a + pin of a capacitor to the + pin of the rectifier. Then connected a resistor to the same + pin of the cap. Then another cap + pin to that resistor and this is where one will get the + first to the OPT's transformers then the plate of the power tube 6Y6. The DC coming from the rectifier is not clean enough and these caps and resistor clean the DC up along with the OPT as an inductor where is will be clean enough for the 6Y6 to use. Then I hook another resistor to the 2nd + pin of that cap and the other end of the resistor will go to the + pin of another cap. This is where the power for the 6SJ7 plate will go. The resistor serve two purposes, clean the signal and drop the voltage to what is best for the tubes. The values of the critters are on the schematic. The last critter a resistor will go from the 3rd cap to ground to bleed off the voltage a cap holds even when the amp is turned off. Look at the PS section of the schematic and see if my description makes any sense. All the - pins will joined together and connected to the Star Ground point. My Star Ground is going to be a 2" to 3" piece of 14gauge wire. All grounds of the amplifier will connect there. If another builder can explain it better than I have done you are welcome to join in and tell your way. I want this thread to be all the builders on this forum putting their heads together and helping a beginner build something. It is my wish now for the other builders to explain in simple terms how the pre tube stage is put together using 8 critters counting the pot making that stage work. Remember KISS when explaining. Where a kid can understand. Help an old man explaining so much and from typing and take it from here. Taking it in stages makes building much easier and simple. The pre stage, circuit, is only 6 critters that have to be connected correctly. One does not have to know what the critters, parts, do to build this amplifier. They just need to be put in the correct spots. If I have made any errors in describing the PS section please point it out. Let's just have some fun for everyone. PS: I started this thread but do not consider mine. I want it to be a group project much like the Honey Badger A/B amplifier project at diyaudio.com. Where some of the best minds came together and designed, built, an amplifier that is supposed to sound as good as a 10 grand A/B amplifier. But lets just stick with this simple circuit and make it a beginner build project. Almost forgot. I am leaving off R1 and C1 from my build. That is Maynard's design he calls the ear bleed circuit. At lest that is what I think he calls it. I do not think I need it but it can be added later if the highs are too bright for your taste.

  46. I completed the preamp module some time ago, got involved in another project. Here's the module, based on a couple of 12AX7s. Requires a -45VDC supply for the tube heaters and a 250VDC supply for the anodes. Has treble and has contour pots located on the board. Caps are either NPO or film. The Fluke is showing anode voltage. Two channels on one board. Can be assembled in a morning. Sounds pretty good!

  47. That’s actually a scale replica, not a full-sized one. You can see in the picture that it’s about 15-20 feet (~5-6 metres) wide, much smaller than the huge original. That means that all the drivers are down-sized, maybe with an 18” driver in the full-size Wall of Sound replaced with a 10” or smaller one in the replica. I’m guessing that a lot of EQing would have been necessary to make the replica sound as good as it looks. However, if professional musicians are happy or even eager to play through it, the mini Wall of Sound must sound pretty good.

  48. I’ve got Yamaha C-60 pre and an M-65 power amp which I love. They can be problematic, though. Three common issues are: Solder joint failure on the I/O jacks The same on heat stressed parts (usually transistors. And the most common, the “Dreaded Sony Bond Glue” problem. I’ve had to deal with all three, but keep these as my every day system cause I love the sound. The Crown and QSC I used while T/s and repair activities were pending on the Yammy just did not sound as good to me, so once fixed the Yamaha was back in.
