  1. The size, of the 4, should be selected by output and performance. There is not a recommended La Scala match, but I'll pick Large. You will not want or need additional subwoofers for any reason. If I were you, I'd replace any direct radiator subwoofers you have with these. They are easily special effects capable. You will not regret it! We were given impressive response curves and told a lot about the physics of the subs, that i won't discuss. The Medium goes deep enough for any music, the Large should cover most LFE effects, if not all and the XL is likely brown note capable. 😆 Choose the additional subs for the max dB output you require. They are powered, so you will not need an additional amp. The amplifier power is surprisingly low and the embedded amp allows some control of distortion. We were not given a release date, but speculation was not before Spring/Summer '24. You have plenty of time to try to time the Market. This is the Large.

  3. Is it better than that blue release they put out six or so years ago? It had a couple of good garage sounding tunes on it but I thought it was weak.

  5. Glad it's all workin out. The wait worth it? lol Buy a converter to AC for the brick and get ya an electric blankie! Maybe you'll have some battery left to start it in the morning. 💪😂 19 hoppers full of leaves just from my yard yesterday afternoon. Nice and sunny today and I just sit here looking out the front window watching them dropping across the street. Boys sucked 'em up this morning and Robin Hood was out driving around fillin his cans then callin the city. Wonder WHY he didn't do it yesterday afternoon? Then one trip and done. Thinkin about warmin up the tubes and spinnin some new stuff that's piled up. Might just happen. Thinkin about a gyro and some fries though.

  7. Looks clean Josh! Been below freezing for several mornings up here where I am. You know what? I'm loving it. I mean being out in it is not totally accurate. I don't keep it running at night so it gets pretty chilly but wrapped up in the wool base layer and blankets I'm just about comfy. Unless you count having to get my back straightened out for about 10 minutes every morning. Things are looking up. Got some more info to the bank. They say they don't need anything else. The inspection is in the morning. If everything is copacetic, I'll get the surveying done and agree to the title insurance. Even might get a kind of layaway on the washer and dryer from the outfit I like to use in New York City. Their Black Friday sale going on right now is epic. Hopefully their stock isn't depleted since I looked last week. But I can order after the inspection and have them deliver a month later which will be perfect since I'm supposed to take possession on the 5th! I can tell you I'm stoked and after pricing... the ugly floors will just have to stay, I'm going to walk on 'em anyhow!

  13. I always had 80-85W rated Pioneers and had no issues with loudness. My current Denon is 95W rated, but it's not as loud as my previous Pioneers. Imo and based on my research Denon and Marantz avr's are overrated in loudness department, so definitely get a 100W model.

  15. My two cents... it sounds like the crossover may have been bypassed to use an active crossover of some sort. If just trying to get the LSII cabinets working correctly, I would make sure the LSII crossovers are hooked up correctly. A power amp should have leads going to the crossover and from there, six wires. A pair for the woofer, midrange horn/driver and tweeter horn/driver. Repeat for the other speaker (left or right).

  25. This is the longest thread I have ever posted anywhere! It's for a good cause, but I have no experience with La Scalas. Last week I met a young married couple who had recently inherited her father's system. La Scala IIs (logo in upper grill corner), RP 600M II bookshelf speakers, Macintosh MC402, Adcom GFA 575es amps, Parasound Halo P5, Adcom GFP 750 preamps, SVS SB 16 subwoofer, and a Yamaha CD player. She's keeping the Parasound, Adcom amp, and the small speakers. The rest is for sale. I've been an audiophile for 40 years and never seen a stack of equipment like this outside of a showroom! My core system is Polk Audio SDA SRS speakers with Carver M1.5t, Crimson 275 amps, Parasound and 10 Octave preamps. She lived nearby and I wanted to hear the LaScalas for possible purchase. Now comes the problem. They sounded terrible- boomy, underwater bass burying weak mids and highs. I heard a set of K horns in the 70s, but had no real experience with horns. I have read extensively about Klipsch and "their sound," but this was definitely not right. She had a friend help her hook it up. She said it sounded nothing like she remembered. I had hoped it was a simple wiring problem, but the friend had hooked it up correctly. Also, there were XLR connectors, balanced/unbalanced and stereo/bridged toggles, and the Parasound had crossover controls for the subwoofer (which had already sold). I checked the jumpers on the speaker back, and the upper/lower section connection. I tried all combinations of equipment, even brought over a basic Kenwood receiver and another CD player. Always the same. Both speakers sound exactly the same. I took off the jumpers and ran the uppers and lowers alone. Even though the sound is terrible, there is a center image and I can hear stereo imaging. It sounds like all the drivers are firing, it just sounds bad. I can't imagine the same problem in both speakers. I've never had any experience with blown drivers, but that's what was coming to mind. Then she said she also had some parts (see pics). She didn't know what they were for. Two look like tweeters and two I didn't recognize. On this forum, I read a 2018 post by member Panelhead recommending replacement of blown tweeters with B&C DE-120s. Those were the tweeters she had! Great thanks to Panelhead- he supplied my first breadcrumb! Now I'm guessing her father had problems and had ordered some parts. So now we have two tweeters and will try swaptronics. Does anyone recognize the other two round pieces? I watched a YouTube of someone dismantling an AL5 and he unscrewed the mid-range driver. Was there a different type on the IIs? This has become a bug under my skin. I really want to help this couple fix their speakers. I have visited them twice but have not removed the back panel from the speakers. I'm a retired Air Force electrical engineer and no stranger to troubleshooting. I've seen some threads about checking signal path with a multimeter. In closing, does anyone recognize the round device with four screws on it? Also, what would be the next step after swaptronics? Thanks for your time.

  26. Again Randy, that ain't it. I tried. They listened to La Scalas (special secret ones that they can't tell you about) with the largest and the second largest. Mr. JohnA was there, he saw all four of them, he listend to all four of them, the largest two with LS. You don't know what you are talking about and the information you are putting is based on information that's months old. This is one of those situations where you might want to be asking questions or seeking clarification rather than spouting facts that are based on assumptions. I have started a thread for those who attended the event to post their impressions and photos (what they were allowed to take).

  27. dark gray clouds and endless rain here, below 40 F , went to my doc this morning , I need further physiotherapeutic treatment, the inflamed nerves in my lumbar spine are not healing, I am not allowed to strain myself physically at all, even an unfavorable posture is enough and the nerve tracts start to hurt, so my doctor has given me very strong medication again. And I also have to go to the dentist tomorrow, I have an inflammation in my upper jaw, but everything else is okay so far. I've invested so much money in the new apartment that I'm going to spend less money now, but actually I'm almost finished, everything that's important for life is there, a few more design jobs and that's it...

  28. Got it, well as OO1 recommended I will use Yamaha A-S501 85W. So it seems to have 4 pairs of terminals, connect two of those the the rp600 and the subout to the back of the L/LFE as in the picture. Thats all right? Also what up with the random ground connection at the back

  29. Yes, I think you get it. Do you have speaker wire for speakers and RCA stereo cables, for inputting source?
    1 point
  30. No, the speaker wires go into each speaker. RCA cable is not speaker wire for your purpose. It will be used to input your source or sources.
    1 point
  31. So the two channels go into the two speakers, the subout goes to the LFE on the back?

  33. Listening to a pair of speakers with no tweeters could sound as you described. As mentioned above, you need to get the backs off the LS II and take a look at the xover and possibly put an ohm meter on the tweeters. Process of elimination leads you down the road of a wiring issue and/or bad xover or bad drivers.

  34. I could hear a difference of my laptop speakers. I think the Heresys sounded better, a little more full.
    1 point
  35. Yes for the moment, the extra parts are a distraction. A snap of the rear top, panel removed will help verify crossover connections, speaker connections and speakers in general. The fact that both sound the same, next clue is the top bin for the tweet and mid, x-over inspection.

  36. I'd personally get something different

  37. Leave the jumpers in place. Connect your speaker leads to EITHER the L or the H connections; the jumpers will send the audio to the proper section of the crossover. You're using the speakers in a desktop system. There's no way you're going to over drive them to damage regardless of the amp's capabilities. You're just not going to play them that loud with a desktop system. Don't sweat it.

  40. I have heard everything in current Klipsch heritage lineup except the Klipschorn AL6. For my ears, the mids and highs were all pretty similar - letting the size of the listening room steer you is not a bad move - sitting in sweet spot should be a great and similarly voiced experience with anything you choose. OR you could listen to them and let your bass preferences guide you. Bass is where I heard the most difference. I will vouch for the Cornwall IVs. I really enjoy them. Good luck on your speaker hunt!

  41. Have you looked into the Heresy's? They are common in commercial settings and would fit into your retro theme nicely. There are some pros here, maybe they will chime in.

  42. Some drawbacks. They are not high enough, no handles, not stackable (which prevents women with large chests from using them), they are not nearly as sturdy as they used to be, and gack!, they charge you for them. Now here's one I use for my classical collection, some Latin records and my vinyl test records. A loose tea chest from China. Tin-lined and useful for flipping. Kinda cool looking too and I presume, still easily obtainable. And you can sing the Leonard Cohen line "all the tea in China".

  43. As I'm sure you know, "the best sounding speaker in the world" would still sound bad in some rooms, with some recordings. According to PWK, the best speaker in the world would be one with very low distortion, including modulation distortion. That would probably require horn loading throughout the range. High efficiency would be a welcome side effect. The "perfect graph," as measured in an anechoic chamber would not be a straight line in our listening rooms, as long as the rooms we put the speakers in are imperfect. According to Harman inc, and other researchers, the best sounding sound system and room combination would, from the main listening position, have a frequency response curve that starts rather elevated in the bass, and smoothly descends as the frequency gets higher, until it reaches 9 or 10 dB lower at 20KHz than it was at 20 Hz. That would be a proposed ideal, and I don't know anyone who has achieved it in a home or Home Theater. I have managed that general shape in my Klipschorn system (31.5 Hz to 15KHz), and it usually sounds very good. There are plenty of odd recordings that call for individual EQ, though. Rumor has it that sometimes recordings are made very un-flat and compressed because the record companies think they will appeal more to the average user that way, and also help them win the "Loudness Wars." Given all of the above, a straight line may be the last thing we want. See J. Gordon Holt's article, "Down with Flat," in the archives of Stereophile, findable through Google (for those who don't know, Holt started Stereophile, and edited it for years). Although he was not a great fan of Klipschorns, he hypothesized that the reason musicians liked them so much was that they triggered their "musical Gestalts." I would add that in those days, musicians often had 15 i.p.s. 1/2 track reel to reel tapes of their own performances that hadn't been monkeyed around with. I'm hoping (and betting) you are getting your musical Gestalt triggered by your Klipschorns, regardless of how old they may be..

  44. I have the RW-12 and my whole family loves it. Sure, there are better subs out there but come on, it is only 250.00. I don't believe there is anything around that price that can come close to it. How can you go wrong. If I could find one for that price I would get it just to have a backup:-)
