  1. Coaxial is a digital connection. XLR is analog. Neither are going to introduce noise unless a component is failing. If you go XLR, the upstream component’s DAC will handle digital to analog processing. If you go coaxial, the downstream component’s DAC will handle the digital to analog processing. For me it would depend on which component’s DAC was superior.

  4. I made a cornbread casserole today. I really think it's like a tamale without masa. And why do grocery stores take cuts of steak and turn them into something like a half inch thin? Well I bought a pack dated today put an envelope of taco seasoning in it with bell peppers and onions and ripe jalapenos. Added a little cheddar to it. Had to put some extra buttermilk into the dry mix before adding all that.

  7. Sometimes I read elsewhere that folks with uber-expensive speakers wish they could re-create the rock concert sensation at home, and I just have to smile, thinking about how the La Scala does that so well, partly due to the rising bass response and the shape of the bass horn.

  8. That's not an average roadster there! Nice! Big purchase a couple weeks ago. Now getting some stuff replaced that wasn't left here. Also replacing two thirty year old appliances. Had the appt set for tomorrow... surprises are good and not so much sometimes. I'll hook up the three good machines in the morning. Tired and my fingers feel shredded from the caulking. They're not tough like they were thirty years ago.

  10. Funny story? When I bought my pre-owned Klipschorns the fellow who sold them to me told me that he was selling them because his wife felt like the bass was lacking. The first thing that I noticed upon picking them up was that they were not sitting in the corners of their listening room. So I dismissed their concern and attributed the bass issue to improper positioning of the speaker cabinet. However when I set them up in the corners of my listening room - and listened to them - I had to agree that there was something wrong with the bass. So I opened up the access doors on the sides of the Khorn bins and guess what I discovered? Mice had built nests inside both bass bins! The nests were pressing directly against the woofer cones!! The nests were preventing the cones from moving!!! After I removed the nests that the mice had built - the bass was much louder . . . YMMV

  13. Really not keen on posting what comes through the door but owning numerous Klipsch speakers from RB75’s to Jubilee’s and several in between I think I can speak with experience when I hear something special. Just received a pair of Canadian made Coherent Audio GR 12 Signatures. Point source, or co-axial design using the high performance Radian 12 inch driver, inset with a 1.75 in. beryllium dome compression driver with high Q crossover components. Currently playing with Quicksilver Horn Monos I can honestly say these are goosebumpers, something I haven’t felt with few, if any other speaker. The texture, clarity, soundstage, overall “completeness” is astounding. An exciting addition to say the least -

  14. So back in 2019 I picked up this older Klipsch system for $200 which I felt was a steal 2 - RF3 II Sides 1 - RC3 II center 2 - RS3 II Rears 1 - KSW-12 Sub Currently running with Denon AVR-4520CL but I also have a brand new Denon AVR-S970H just sitting in a box but thinking of hooking it up to run Dolby Atmos and have the HEOS/bluetooth and wireless capabilities. Now I know the 4520 is a higher end receiver but it's also about 10 years old if I am not mistaken and cant run true 3D sound for Atmos. TV is an LG 77" C2 OLED currently its all set up in a a medium size room with 9 ft ceilings. My questions are... How much has the RF3 towers and centers changed in terms of the new speakers? Is it really worth spending the money and upgrading or am I not going to see that much difference here? The system sounds good but I feel the Atmos will boost the 3d sound. No gaming going on, mostly TV and music. Thanks for your time.

  16. why not try it both ways and see which one you like the best... I think, in general, that ESS (32 bit) has the upper hand over Burr-Brown (24 bit), but it's probably a personal choice... I am not really sure at that level if there is a big difference, though there is probably a difference. ESS that is newer or higher in the line I would say is a better chipset for sure... but it's still no AKM4499. Topping has a pretty interesting DAC using the AKM4499 and is reasonably priced, but it's still single channel chipset as far as I know.

  19. Not everyone can hear or appreciate what a SET tube amplifier like a SET 300B brings to the table. Understandable and will save them a lot of money . Not a large market being it takes a very efficient speaker to work properly but with horn speakers that reveal the subtle details of music along with a SET tube amplifier which also provides an unmodified audio signal it can be a wonderful experience. Those with a trained ear with experience in the audio world do hear what is so wonderful a sound and detail they present. That being said though I can and do appreciate the difference in sound a PP tube or transistor can make. A serious audiophile will benefit from a good SET and a good PP amplifier for a difference in sound. I will use a SET for a few weeks, months and love the sound then put in a PP amp and think boy this sounds great then after a few weeks, months do the same with a SET and say the very same thing. All can sound good but my preference is a SET tube amplifier with the music I prefer. Enjoy.

  20. Just joined this forum to share my experience. I have 2 SPL-100 subwoofers that share a very similar amplifier. Part number is : PD-BFS-R110SW-V1 . Manufactured 20180522. The subs have a 200w power supply. My issue started just a few months out of warranty, I contacted Klipsch but I was told they don't do international warranty (I'm in Canada) and directed me to a local repair center (local , but still kinda far). My issue was that every few minutes I would hear a "Pop" coming from the sub. It took me a while to even understand that pop was coming from my sub, and probably only did when it started doing it very frequently.. I unplugged the sub for a while since I have 2 but I got lazy and I never sent the amp for repair at the repair shop.. Eventually I plugged it back in and by then the "Pop" wasn't there anymore.. I figured I got lucky and the issue went away. Few days ago I wanted to add more bass so I went for the gain on both subs and realized , the sub wasn't working at all! Even though the green power light was on, it was dead. So I'm guessing I went for at least a year with 1 sub down and didn't even notice.. So began the search to see if anyone had repaired this thing before and I ended up in this thread. Not having done any research at all on this problem before I read through the entire thread. Most people here speak of overheating resistors, cooked capacitors, dead transistor but my board had nothing of the sorts. All the bigger wattage resistors were all clean , no busted caps, nothing. Even the main transistor is different in my build , it's a simple TIP31C. The resistor driving it is a 470 ohms, which is intact. Having 2 identical subs I decided to open the second one and start comparing stuff. I quickly found that in the working one , the resistor had -4 volts on it but on the dead sub that voltage was at -0.492 volts. At one point , by accident I noticed that if I powered on the amp it would work for about 3 seconds and the voltage would raise to -0.492 volts (I say raise because its a negative voltage). I tested the amp by putting my finger on the cable plugged into the left channel just to hear a hum caused by noise. After 3 seconds it would die and would only work if I waited about 10 minutes with it powered off. Since this was constant, I figured it's not a passive component like a resistor or transistor because those usually work or don't but ever rarely are they intermittent like this, especially if they have no signs of damage. So I decided to go take a look at the datasheet for the IRS2092 to see if it has any type of protection , which is frequent in ICs and sure enough it has an over-current protection. It was then I realized that the "Pop" sound I had been hearing all this time was caused by this IC, constantly cutting off the power causing the "Pop" and then resetting back to normal operation right away. Since over-current should come from the MOSFET (in my case , my board uses a dual MOSTFET instead of 2 independent parts, part # IRFI4019HG) the easiest thing to try quickly was to move the MOSTFET from one amp to the other and so I swapped both parts. Unfortunately the dead amp remained dead and actually it stopped turning on for 3 seconds, but the working one still worked with the swapped MOSFET, telling me both parts are working. I didn't want to swap the IRC2092 from one amp to the other because it's somewhat tough to access and removing it to re-install it somewhere else might not be the best thing. I started looking around if this component had a high failure rate and for any other information I could gather and found some on the DIYaudio forums. While the failure rate doesn't seem astronomical on this part, it's a very common part , used a lot in the DIYers community and I came across a post by "nigelwright7557" that said, the IRS2092 is fussy , large MOSFET gate capacitance will trigger the overload protection, if the MOSFETs go it usually takes the IRC2092 with it too so change them both. So I went on Digikey, ordered both the IRS2092, the IRFI4019HG , and also all capacitors on the board just in case (the list is exactly the same as the picture in Xxerby's post). I figured , can't hurt to have to capacitors in case. Got the parts the following day and installed them both (I didn't change any capacitors at all) and voilà! The subwoofer lives! I didn't need to change the MOSFET because the original one of this board is now in the amp that worked and this board had the one from the working amp after I had swapped them.. but I figured may as well put both parts , since they only were 5$ CAD each. A quick explanation as to why the transistor (TIP31c on my board) turns off when the protection kicks in is that there is a pin, CSD, as mentionned by Xxerby that is part of the auto-protection circuit. This pin feeds the power for the transistor and when the protection kicks in , even though the transistor is still closed (voltage on it's base is always present) there is no longer power on it's collector and the IRS2092 is driven by this power , through the emitter. (Thanks @Xxerby for your outlines of the connections on your board, it helped me figure this part out since my board is full of white silicone and not glue like the boards in this thread). In the end the IRS2092 failed and kept triggering the auto-protection , even though there was no over-current situation, causing a "Pop" every time the chip would reset... The end. Sorry for the book, but hopefully it helps others in the future.

  21. They're not Klipsch. They have elements of Al Klappenberger's Universal, but the 48 uF woofer caps throw me and I'm not seeing all the circuit connections in your pic. What does the front and rear of the squawker horn look like? This could be the product of a carpetbagger that moved to Baxter (?) TN to build Klipsch "upgrades" and similar speakers. I can't remember his name, now.

  27. Bruce, David - - Thanks for letting me know your "Juices" are still flowing! Nice setup David. The Duke still reigns! Duke Spinner - People Chow was a project I worked on in the 90s. It occurred to me that most people feed their dogs the exact same food every day. I thought if that worked for dogs, maybe it would work for humans too. Why not have the "perfect nutrition" every day instead of monking around with a million different foods - many of them bad for you. So, I began concocting ingredients into a mix that could be stored easily, carried easily, and eaten without utensils - aka People Chow. It was of course 1/2 joking, 1/2 theater for my friends, and 1/2 serious attempt at simplifying my life living in an Airstream trailer on the beach in Half Moon Bay. Happy New Year to you all! This begins my 23rd year on the K-forum. Ha Ha, I don't know what to think of that.

  30. Randy, I am here to gain knowledge, help others, and enjoy what others share. Members using the ignore option would be very detrimental to others who are trying to gain facts. As with a lot of threads, you have a large number of posts, most of which are arguing and insulting many others who have, individually or combined, more experience and knowledge than me and or you... A lot of your entries contradict themselves (there is no resonance to how to fix the resonance) I was told that we have two ears, two eyes, and only one mouth, and it is not a mistake by God or Mother Nature. I learned a long time ago that: 1) I don't know it all and I learn from others if I listen 2) That I gain credibility when I admit when I am wrong (and sometimes that's not easy because I am not made of straw) Happy New Year to you, hope you're doing well.

  31. Back when I was chasing the numbers thinking there had to be a pattern, I read that overdamping could do exactly what you're saying. This morning, I talked with a friend about which vintage receivers and amps were supposed to be the best. I sent him a few forum threads and a list of what I like. I used to look for a wide spectrum on the Hz, high DF, and low THD, but everything I read said to stop all that and trust my ears (plus others' advice, such as the HK Twins). Here are a few I sent so you can see that the specs are all over the place, yet these are sought after for their quality of sound. https://www.hifiengine.com/manual_library/mcintosh/mc30.shtml https://www.hifiengine.com/manual_library/yamaha/cr-2040.shtml https://www.hifiengine.com/manual_library/sansui/g-9000.shtml https://www.hifiengine.com/manual_library/pioneer/sx-1250.shtml https://www.hifiengine.com/manual_library/pioneer/sx-1010.shtml https://www.hifiengine.com/manual_library/harman-kardon/730.shtml And last but not least (and one I wish I could enjoy for a while) https://www.hifiengine.com/manual_library/concept/165.shtml Even though we should trust our ears, they are easily tricked. I can hear when something sounds bad, but I second guess if it sounds like it is supposed to. I only trust my ears when ABing whatever I think sounds good.

  36. I was the first builder of the PP SET amplifier at diyaudio.com. I also am the one who asked Nelson for a SE V-fet design and he agreed to design one. It took a few years but he did produce it. Also I have built the majority of Nelson Pass diy projects including nearly all of the Firstwatt clones. Nelson Pass 74 year old groupie. If you like the sound of the ACA you would love the sound of the Burning Amp #1 SE amplifier with multiple output devices. https://firstwatt.com/pdf/art_ba1.pdf The Burning Amp #2 has a lot in common with the Pass Labs amplifiers. Similar to the F4 with an extra output stage if memory is correct with a front end circuit added where it will operate without a high output linestage that the F4 really needs for full output.
