JohnJ Posted October 29, 2021 Posted October 29, 2021 But they're rounded, don't reach the bottom and damage the groove from the way I've read and see it. All I know is that the then expensive AT I bought in the early 80s for less than $50 was a fine line and I haven't had any other type since. Some covers failed but my vinyl has not! 2 1 Quote

I’ve been using a Shure M97xE cartridge for 15 years (replaced the stylus twice), which has an elliptical stylus. I suspect that the stylus rides at a different height in the groove than the styli on cartridges I’ve used in the past. It’s just a theory of mine (or hypothesis to a scientist), based on the fact that scratches are less audible with this cartridge, and the difference is obvious on some of my older LPs. It makes for more pleasant listening. 2 1 Quote

So if there are scratches or dust it will be evident to your ears. I spent several afternoons over that spring at the stereo store talking with that guy about all of this back before the www. Did not build my first real stereo until after I learned a bit about it. I can lay the stylus/cart choice and also my favored brand of headphones on that guy. Didn't demo the carts but demoed several sets of headphones and the AKG K-140 was the clear winner for me back then. 2 Quote
mustang_flht Posted October 29, 2021 Posted October 29, 2021 Hi, I think like John J, if you want to keep your vinyls use a MicroLine (or MicroRidge is the same), a Shibata or Fine Line. https://www.ad-na.com/en/product/jewel/product/stylus.html The MicroRidge / MicroLine is the most elaborate stylus, with laser and computer size. Its contact surface with the groove of the disc is the largest of any diamond cut. Audiotechnica, Shure V15 V MR, Dynavector, JICO and others have used this MicroRidge size on their high end cartridges I have an Audio Technica VM740ML, the MicroLine is great is now not very expensive, I think it's a shame to damage your vinyl records with an elliptical today. https://www.audio-technica.com/en-us/cartridges/line-series/vm-series/vm740ml 2 1 Quote

So unless you're wearing gloves when spinning vinyl, I wouldn't spray vinyl records with WD-40! https://files.wd40.com/pdf/sds/specialist/wd-40-specialist-spray-and-stay-gel-lubricant-aerosol-us-ghs-sds.pdf https://www.wd40.com/products/dry-lube/ 1 Quote
Dave1291 Posted October 29, 2021 Posted October 29, 2021 Okies, think stylus for a minute. There are two types of penetrating oil/solvent that actually will creep UP hill. Aerokroil and WD-40. Try either on a frozen bolt or nut and let it sit for 24 hours... Even though it's Halloween I don't like oily creepy thingys... 1 2 Quote

No, but here in Belgium, we have our own 'scandal' with Pfos chemicals in Zwijndrecht, near Antwerp, where thousands of citizens are poisened by contaminated water, ground and air. https://www.vrt.be/vrtnws/en/2021/09/24/pfos-scandal-more-evidence-that-the-flemish-government-asked-no/ 4 Quote

I am also still in the German-speaking forum online also. That is then sometimes just all too much for me. In addition, I had to finish cable orders again and had spent a lot of time in my free time listening to music, mainly the now modified Marantz SACD player, which now clearly plays better than ever before. It's a hell of a machine, I'm thrilled. Some of my cables in new designs, done this week ... The Yellow-Grey Line The Black & White Line 4 Quote

Well, my ex-wife would disagree ... I came home one evening and she asked if I liked the couch where it was. I said it was fine. She asked if I liked the tv where it was. I said it was fine. Then I asked why she was asking me. She then said sarcastically, "when you left this morning, the couch was over there and the chair was over there and the tv was over there ...." she had spent the day rearranging furniture and I didn't even notice. Guys if you want to stay married ... take notice of your bride's efforts. Not saying that led to the divorce, could have been the time I broke her cedar chest because I jumped on it and was running in place because I wanted the football player on tv to run faster. Or the time, when she was ready to give birth to our first child, and I got rid of our truck and bought a two seater sports car. Hmmm, where is the car seat gonna go? 3 Quote
